With this type of tutorial, you can make me forget that it’s a synthesizer without any kind of touch response and that, if I decided to get one of these, it would be more about having a strap-on model. You definitely know what you’re doing and have a great luck on how to make patching this type of synth accessible for the layman. Thanks a lot, MIDI Maniac.
freaking amazing video tutorial. Thank you so much for opening all of the possibilities to me. I just discovered the hidden banks of sounds last night - (internal , +1, Function/compare, Bank A, B, C, or D
just to mention here, the DX27 is absolutely the same unit, 1:1 sounding, but built like a tank. You can call the video DX100 and DX27 Basic Sound Design, to catch more viewers. And of course your video is TOP TOP TOP!!!! Thank you for sharing it with us!
This wasn't my first, but was my first FM synth in 88. Thanks for bringing this beauty back into the light. Would have been nice to have a video tutorial like this in 88, cause FM on a DX was quite the learning curve compared to subtractive.
Thank you! End 80's I made these sounds when I had plenty time on high school hahaha. They still carry the letter of my girlfriend of that time when I was 15 :D
Was the designer of the algorithms for the 4-op FM synths a huge Tetris fan? Save for the reverse-L and reverse-Z, they literally in the shape of Tetraminos.
Great vidéo Roger, it remembers when i was a child, exploring sounds on my father’s DX100. By the Way the sound you made is great , it make me think of Vangelis sound style , like in Antartica sountrack.
Well, my first lesson in fm...to say the true, it's not so easy as the subtructive synthesis..I find interesting the thing with the 1111, cause it's the same way in the d-50, and as now, i'm thinking a lot of people who says programming the d-50 in it's screen is very difficult...heh, i can imagine them trying this.. It has a lot of "unproductable" results, this can be seen in 2 ways. As "happy accidents", but also too much difficulty...though i didn't understand the whole thing, i can see the potentional for nice bass sounds...
Hahaha....all the first meetings are a bit awkward ;-) Understanding the basics is always key. I do own a Roland D-20 and I will also do a video about Sound Design with that one. In the end all sound design is almost the same. Waveform+LFO+ADSR = sound. The D-series started with combining PCM-samples and digital OSC and also a kind of Algorithms (The way you can combine those 4 tones) Maaaan....I'm already getting ready for that vid :-) But back to you! Yes, it can give unpredictable results ;-)
Thanks! Here's the procedure: - Press Brown button - Press Button 12 - Disable Memory Protection - Press and hold Red button - Press the button of the location where you want the new patch That's all!
Did you teach how to return to the program original sound? Once you have begun editing, how do you return your edit to the original sound to start over? Thanks!
Hi! Output DX-100 into Input Korg DRV-2000. Output Korg DRV-2000 into Roland GO:Mixer. So, no extra amplifier was used. I hope this answered your question. :-)
To use your DX100 live and you want to have reverb then I suggest a mixer with reverb built-in. I have a Behringer Xenyx1222USB with built-in reverb. I connect the DX-100 to a MONO input. The Behringer mixer is connected to two speakers with built-in amplifier. I can add the reverb to the sounds of the DX100 with the mixer.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching and subscribing :D The C-key is giving another note. A very close note. This means that the contact inside needs to be cleaned. This is not very difficult but you have to open the DX-100. Does it also happen when you connect an external MIDI-keyboard? If not, then the contact is dirty.
EDcreative Hi! Thanks for your question! On page 38 of the manual you can read how to save an edited preset. Here you can download the manual. www.polynominal.com/yamaha-dx-100/yamaha-dx100-manual.pdf Good luck! Grtzzz, Roger

Great patches and awesome vid. Its been a while since i tinkered with programming the dx100. Subtractive is a lot more immediate but you can really get some mad sounds using fm.. even 4op. I got heaps of cool patches off the net somewhere and loaded up with cool sounds but I'll have to try tweaking some again! +1 for more pls!
Hi! Great to read that you also have this unit. You're right about substractive, but indeed you can create cool sounds. Thanks for the +1 for more ;-) I will grab soon a vid again with this unit :D Grtzzz, Roger
@@theMIDImaniac sweet the main thing that confused me was the pitch relationship between oscillators/ operators :) how to get settings that don't sound too crazy :)

By far the best video about basic and necesary to understand a FM 4 Operators syntesis!
As always, amazing video!!!!
im glad Miku approves of this video
She'd be a hypocrite if she didn't. She's literally a "moe anthropomorphic" version of a DX series keyboard.
Thanks dude! I Went through a lot of videos & manuals & yours made 80’s FM sound design/patch making easy.
Thank you so much!
I'm programming now a controller to make it even more easy.
Another trip to the attic. Another top quality tutorial 😊
Fantasy product hahaha...this way your attic becomes spacious 😄. Thanks for your positive comment!✌🏼

Hey thanks for this excellent tutorial! We have a dx27s that we’ve never figured out how to program, but I’m going to give it a try now for sure.
Soon I will upload my BCR-2000 template to have immediate control over the DX! It's going to be awesome!

Have you tried to imagine one which is NOT the shape of a tetramino? Very difficult to imagine.

can i connect it to computer as midi controller?
Only if your computer has MIDI OUT port, otherwise you will need a sound card with 5-pins MIDI connectors.

It's because it's based upon speed, you slide up to increase the speed - like pressing on an accelerator -- fastest speed is at the top!
Fun Fact: Hatsune Miku is Designed after the Yamaha DX7 AND DX100!
Yeah!!! I noticed that too. Here sleeve has the layout printed.
If people believed other people when they say things like it's important to know... No-one would use FM.... Oh wait.
