This is a very nice series, as there aren't too many good videos of pomegranate bonsai. I'm a big fan of aggressive growers, so I started some from seed this spring, thanks for inspiration! 🙂💚
P.S: I really like your laid back style, and your videos have loads of useful information for a hobbyist like me who's interested in more "modest" material.
I was thinking about your trees earlier this spring. I managed to find a stash of small pots at a farmers market and was busy repotting my trees. Even here in Japan, small pots are sometimes hard to come by. However, some were a bit smaller than I wanted, but I thought, "It should be fine. I've seen tighter squeezes" :-)
Nice work, this is my favorite plant of yours and I love to see its updates. My pomegranate bonsai I've been growing from seed also just recently came out of dormancy and is growing new foliage as well. It's just over 18 months old, I hope that it keeps on living so that it can develop like yours is!
cheers. its just molar clay, perlite and some compost. roughly equal, probably more molar clay. fertliser is just general purpose stuff that i use once a month during the growing season.
I hope your pomegranates are doing fine this winter! Here in Germany, we now have nights that go down to -15 suddenly. Not a pleasant surprise for my pomegranates, I took some precautions though and they seem to be alive for now. I hope that you didn't get the same temparatures like me right now.

After seeing your last video i planted some seeds and tho i planted them late in the year most survived outside in unheated green house and i picked 5 and move to pots so thank you for the idear
is this a dwarf pomegranate or normal pom? Also keep these coming !!! im in love with this little guy.. i just watched all the videos back to back , its pretty amazing how far its come... I think we are about due for part 5 :P
Cheers. i just use my normal mix- molar clay, perlite and a bit of compost. i have some that is very fine and the particles are small, which is better for seedlings.
@@BackGardenBonsai Thanks! I’ve been repurposing the smaller particles in my soil (Pure Calcined Clay) that end up on the bottom as soil for seedlings.
Still can't get over that growth - this tree does not disappoint! Getting some really nice texture on the lower trunk as well. Is this a mini pomegranate or full size?
Cheers Sue. Ive no idea. I assume its full size since it was started from a full size fruit from the supermarket. unless seeds are not quite the same as the same as the parents and can be dwarfed?
I started to grow two pomegranates in late April. They are growing so vigorously, not even my silver birch is growing that fast. One of them is even developing several side branches, and that in its first growing season! I wonder if the fruit of those seedlings will have some resemplance to its parents like peaches do.
It’s been “from seed in blue pot” since video 1. How will we know what tree it is if you ever upsize the pot? (Hehe) Love the way that root flair is coming along, Ian. Very impressed. Also, how cool is it that you’ve recreated a full summer to fall transition in your grow tent! That’s wicked, brother!!
cheers.I guess its in this pot for ever now hahaha but yeah the light transition is easy enough, you just have to keep changing the timer every few days haha. its annoying, it works
Hi. Great videos! Thank you for posting! I am in year 2 of this same bonsai plant. It lives outside except for the coldest winter and I have not repotted or trimmed the roots yet. I will do that this winter. Can you please post what soil/rock mix you are using for this plant? Do you only water + grow light or are you giving any fertilizer treatments? Thank you! Cheers!
cheers. my soil is pretty much equal parts molar clay, perlite and compost. I have a video on it if you look on the channel you shoudl see it easy enough. as for fertiliser, i just use miracle grow all purpose every now and again
bonsai soil. which is a very vague answer. Its a pretty intense topic and you will get 1000 different answers about what is best. start with reading this- www.backgardenbonsai.com/a-general-guide-to-bonsai-soil/ it will hopefully give you some direction into the madness

Yes! The pomegranate! 6 years old and the trunk is already so thick but the canopy compact! 😳 (Looks at his own seedlings and takes mental note! 😅)

What are you feeding it?
just all purpose mircale grow. but it will be the extra light that im giving it that is sending it into hyper drive.
