I get the feeling that she was a lesbian and afraid to talk to anyone about it - and back then that was considered a disorder that needed treatment compared to what we now know. What a crying shame. She was not a sick person, she was just a frightened person.

She was not afraid to express who she was. Just because she is masculine does not make her gay.

@Mamaboo cee she certainly has an unusual appearance for the era. If gay, she'd keep it secret as it was a societal taboo.

@@glendathegoodwitch6987 true, true. I did post that was haw I felt, because that then, even admitting being gay to one's self was socially surpressed. I am a bit like her. I identify female, born female but I am a bit masculine. I just felt that the way she was back then was not "socially acceptable" - which was just awful - no matter how you identify. She was her own individual self In a stupid "cookie cutter" world and gay or not it was hard to be so individual. Maybe today she would have had an easier time identifying, gay or not.
And she was definitely a strong person to hold together under the enormous pressure of her illness as well as her beautiful (yet different for the time) individuality.

**EDITED 7/9/23** Y'all! I was not expecting my comment to blow up like this! Thank you for all the kind words and insight! Let's shine our lights together!!****I was labeled a tomboy, even in the early 80's.I grew up practically mute until I was almost 4. I now know it was Autism and I also found out I am dyslexic. My mother would just label me stupid. I loved books, art, cats, jeans, sneakers, sci fi and being outside.I could sew, cook and create from a young age and my mother hated it. I did not like social instances and I still do not. I did not date because I found boys to be very annoying and immature. My mother tried to scare me with a religious boot camp. She was worried I would be a stain on society. It was awful. I felt like they were aliens all trying to convert me to something I am not. I was tested and found to have a high IQ and I excelled in Art and soccer/volleyball. My mother hate every ounce of me. My parents tried to marry me off at 18 but I just left home and never looked back. It was mental and emotional abuse. She continued until the day she died, trying to destroy me. I went out, travelled the world, kept up with my art, books and being outside and am very happy now, in my late 40's. Blessings to all these mislabeled women, who just were fed up and wanted to be free.

If she were diagnosed today they would say she's suffering from PTSD not ASPD. Everything she says and does is a trauma response. I'm in awe of how well she is holding up considering what she must have been through.

    • @k_t530
      @k_t530 ปีที่แล้ว +60

No she would be diagnosed as bipolar.... They would take the fact that she's impulsive, the fact that she doesn't remember emotional events or anything tied to a strong emotion, they would also look at the fact that she is antisocial, they would look at the fact that she prefers others to control her life; which is what she meant by "I feel better when I'm locked up" that's because she doesn't have to make any decisions or be responsible because somebody else is doing it for her. I would say that speaks to the probability that she has a narcissistic mother(person she tends to have issues with) that isolated her from others and controlled every single thing about her life and then when she became of age, she lost her damn mind in a sense and started acting impulsively because she was free and wanted to experience shit, and with a childhood the way she had it there was no way she could make smart choices out of impulsive ones. Instead of actually trying to come up with a treatment plan that might actually help her and reintegrate her into society, they would just going to treat her with a bunch of medications and turn what could possibly be something curable into a lifelong condition. Just like they did in that time. The field (psychology) itself concretes it into a mental illness, instead of a treatable condition.

The psychologist has a great, soothing voice to draw out the woman's most intimate feelings; he doesn't let too much time go between questions, keeping total eye contact with her, not looking at or writing down notes, totally engaged, trying to put her at ease and succeeding more than normal it would seem with a woman who's mostly closed off to all social contact. There is something very dramatic about these 1950's, early 60's psychiatric interviews that make them almost haunting....the stark black and white film, the room, etc.

Interesting interview. So many variables. She does display willful self-defiance, has had multiple arrests, spent time in institutions, many pregnancies and is just 21. Given the generation this takes place in, the stigma of mental illness, the lack of psychiatric knowledge (still using shock treatment) and ignorance of her parents contributed to this terrible storm. She presents quite intelligent and admits herself into the hospital. Admitted oneself to a hospital AND requesting their own shock treatment is RARE for someone that is insane. I struggle with how much the therapist is talking? Perhaps putting “ideas” in her head? Again, she presents very intelligent, defiant and manipulative of those around her and the system back then. I do question the abuse theory with her? She prefers the structure of being in a hospital. Being cared for, meals and bed given to her. She is very insightful to her own mental health. Very puzzling

She seems well adjusted; but dealing with psychic gifts, anxiety, stress, lack of guidance, and some bad choices from addiction. But she's not antisocial. It's also incredible to see a classic lesbian again since they started 'becoming rare' expression wise in the early 2000's. Now that gender lines are often no longer distinct among LGBTQ people, classic lesbians are few and far between. There's a certain energy of LGBTQ people born in the 1900's. I miss that. There's a beauty to classic lesbians that has nearly disappeared from all the gender blending. I hope gender expression makes a strong comeback in the next few decades. @Michael Scofield might be, the current research supports the idea that narcissist personalities develop from trauma and neglect in childhood, the title of the movie suggests that she is diagnosed with bpd, which holds many of the same traits as narcissistic personality disorder and from listening to her speak about her mothers behavior it is possible that she is narsasistic as an adult because she was raised by a mother with those tendencies and a father who was rarely present. I dont doubt that this woman has some kind of npd, but i don't know if she would have wound up in the hospital with a more stable nurturing upbringing

I think they used to view "promiscuity, illegitimate pregnancies, lesbianism, multiple marriage, drug addiction, theft, and bad-check passing" as confirming antisocial personality disorder. It can also indicate BPD, but now there are some researchers that feel that the BPD diagnosis is itself masking trauma or PTSD. All of these are best-available labels for complex situations of human lives, which are themselves complex and fragile.

I have Complex PTSD due to the emotional abuse inflicted by my father & my siblings physically picking on me. I was picked on by schoolmates & groped against my will in high school. When I was in my 20s I had a dissociative episode which scared me but I didn’t tell anyone because I was afraid of their response. My mother was a single parent after our parents divorced and after years of struggle she became short of patience & would yell & call us names when we were in trouble. As the oldest I was treated more sternly & one day, when she was really mad at me, she told me I looked so much like my father that she could hardly look at me when she was mad. That really stung. I was babysitting my cousins, not much younger than me, by the time I was about 10 yrs old, so that I could get the things I wanted because my mom couldn’t afford to do that for three kids. My brother was already on his way to being a delinquent but she always showed him preferential treatment, even as adults & even after his legal problems. She died three years ago and I’m just now starting to let go of the resentment & pain I felt. I had such a low self esteem that I attracted the wrong type of men & as a result I’ve been married & divorced twice. My 2nd husband was a narcissist & gaslit me our entire marriage but I didn’t even realize that’s what he was doing until I caught him cheating on me after 23 yrs of marriage. I struggled during the divorce due to a lack of emotional support from my family & ended up in a homeless shelter for 6 months because I’m on disability and wasn’t able to find a place to live.

I’m not talking about people who have full fledged screaming fits in public, that’s a whole other issue. When I tell my family that something they’ve done, in present situations, has hurt me they feel guilty which angers them and their response is to tell me, with anger & sarcasm in their voice, that I’m being “too sensitive”. Mother telling her she was bad since she was really young. She seems to want to fix herself which doesn't seem antisocial to me. Loving or not, I can imagine one of this woman's kids sitting there 20 years later, complaining about her. Being the status of "child" does not mean you cannot also be gaslighting, misinterpreting, tormenting, or lacking in empathy. I never draw conclusions until I hear from more sides. I say this because of a sudden feeling of compassion and love for my own parents as I thought about their lives in a more whole way.

The psychiatrist suffered from an incredible lack of curiosity on the subject of how she, at age 21, has had 7 pregnancies. It's so glaring. She most likely suffered from sexual abuse from an early age as well as severe emotional abuse and other trauma. Yet he doesn't explore this...and these have clearly impacted on her history and present. Unbelievable.

If it's an evaluation it's not the time to probe deeply into anything in particular. You're mostly working on trust and getting an idea of their backstory. You never know how much someone has fully internalised that they were actually abused and it can be hugely destabilising to confront it and experiencing that fallout without feeling pretty secure in the therapeutic relationship first might actually damage it.

In contrast people nowadays are ready too gush information to anyone at the drop of a hat no matter how personal it may be. It's hard to know though if it's a sign of a forward or backward step as regards the way humans communicate to each other.🎵

Well if your mother was Anti Social you would normalize her abandonment at a young age. You might have never loved someone no matter what and vice versa. Secure attachments to people even just 1 or 2 is a good sign, but if you find yourself being antagonistic about peoples devotion to you. That can also be a sign of Anti Social traits

This lady just seems like someone who has been beaten down by everyone in her life and the system to the point of just accepting she is a problem and allowing stuff to happen to her now. For her to say that she wanted to go to the hospital because it was better for her, what was her home situation like then? To blame someone who has gone through or is going through trauma doesn't help them. Of course she is going to do drugs etc. I hope this beautiful lady eventually got the help she desperately needed.

It can really do some damage to a persons soul and mind..Like being abandoned and neglected..Given up on..Leaves the person alone to make thier own decisions..I feel for her..Had she had the help and support and care she needed, she might not have ended up where she did..
