  • Customers are not allowed to pick fruits or walk in the orchard. Respect their rules and don't do it.
A nice Friday drive to Frankie's Nursery in Waimanalo to check out some fruit trees for sale and see what fruits are in season to buy. I was lucky enough to get a little tour of the jaboticabas on the property and permission to pick fruits from some dwarf unknown Jaboticaba variety. I paid for the fruits I was allowed to pick.
    Trees shown in order:
    Plinia aureana
    Plinia edulis
Plinia sp. Peluda de Alagoas aka "Grimal"
    Plinia jaboticaba var. Sabara
    Plinia cauliflora var. Paulista
    Plinia jaboticaba var. Sabara
Unknown dwarf Plinia sp. - Possibly a cauliflora or some cross hybrid. - It's over 20 years old and just over 6 feet tall. Was said to be from a seed of a jaboticaba that makes variegated fruits from Brazil.

I've only ever picked them when completely black. I think when the skin just starts to "sag" they are the sweetest.

Yes, with Sabara variety, it is not as tasty if you pick them early. Some varieties you can pick early and not completely purple/black

Very nice collection of trees. Surprising that there's so many fruit there that haven't been picked. Is this at a park?

This is a tropical fruit nursery. I use to work here. Lots of cool fruit on this property.

This is at Frankie's Nursery. They don't allow people to go around the orchard or pick fruits. When the fruits darken more the birds and bugs pick them if someone doesn't. They usually only sell jaboticabas from the big Sabara they have in the parking lot. I went back a few days later and the Sabaras were starting to turn purple and the unknown dwarf was getting hit by bugs and birds badly, but the now darker fruits were even sweeter.

How fun! I live on the big island and have 3 Jabo a 2 murta & 1 paulista. I’d love to get my hands on some of these other varieties. One of my murta is 25 years old this year we had a lot of fruit

That is amazing! My parents live over on the Big Island. I plan on visiting them sometime soon. I would love to check out your jaboticaba trees when I am there if possible. Thanks for watching!

This is at a tropical fruit nursery on Oahu. You can only see the largest sabara tree in the parking lot, which is the most impressive. They don't allow you to walk around the orchard where the other trees are. Big Island has a lot more jaboticabas but I am not sure where exactly to see them. Thanks for watching!

What did you do to keep off the birds?

    • @GrowTropicalFruits
      @GrowTropicalFruits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It's not my tree so I didn't do anything. These fruits got darker in color a few days later and the birds and bugs were hitting it pretty hard. Luckily this tree is very dwarf and compact so it would be easy to put a net around it to keep the birds out if they wanted to.
