Great Cars: BENTLEY

  • A long time ago, Bentleys were racing cars. In 1930, a Bentley won the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race for the fifth time, roaring along at 130 miles an hour and overtaking a Mercedes to claim victory. The next year, Bentley was absorbed by Rolls-Royce, which eventually made the Bentley into a Rolls with a different grille. But the memory of those distant glory years never faded, and a few years ago Bentley began reaching for its own identity as a sort of Rolls sports sedan. With stiffened suspensions, more horsepower, more rubber and a few gentlemanly sporting cues -- what Bentley literature called ''the spirit of the racetrack,'' it sought to lure the well heeled who wanted a little fun. While it didn’t lure too many out of their Ferraris, Bentley did attract a few Hip Hop stars. Now in the hands of BMW, the world will see if Bentley can once again evoke the spirit of the cars that won Le Mans five times and then carted the rich and titled for seven decades. It’s looking promising - in 2003, Bentley came in first at LeMans.

    Early Bentley cars were great cars. Even Jay Leno understands that. The 8 Liter Bentleys were the best prewar luxury cars ever built(it's a shame only 100 of those cars were ever built). Today Bentleys are great performance luxury cars. It's a shame Bentley is going all electric. The public deserves better than this.

    Philip Brooks said that Bentley built two rotary engines for aircraft.
    They were not rotary, they were radial.

    • @woodthorpe100
      @woodthorpe100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was a rotary Bentley engine. The cylinders rotated round the crankshaft.Check out the Le Rhone engine it was a rotary also

    • @Rog5446
      @Rog5446 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just checked out the Le Rhone engine.
      The pistons are reciprocal, therefore it's a radial.
      Just because the engines rotate, this does not make it a rotary.
      The pistons have to rotate in the combustion chamber to be a rotary engine.

    • @webleyboxer1
      @webleyboxer1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "Rotary engine" originally referred to the rotating cylinder type engines - with reciprocating pistons. The usage for Wankel engines etc is fairly recent and unconnected. It's not wrong to call the Le Rhone and Bentley aero engines "Rotary's" and they are considered distinct from "Radial" engines despite having cylinders in a radial pattern.

    • @khaccanhle1930
      @khaccanhle1930 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Rog5446 the first engines to be called "rotary" were arranged in a radial pattern, but the whole engine rotated around along with the propeller. The Wankel came much later.
      This is a case of someone knowing enough about a topic to be dangerous but not competent.

      But.....
      Rolls & Bentley actually produced a tatty product under British management, I know this to be true because a good friend worked for Duncan Hamilton in the eighties & I witnessed many of those Marques passing through his showroom in Bagshot.
      Most would have nothing more than 200 miles on them, my chum would go over them to ensure everything was as it should be.
      He pointed out both poor engineering & poor finish.
      Hamilton used to offer AMG conversions for clients - the Mercedes product at that time was head & shoulders above our best offerings.
      Under German management, the Bentley & Rolls motors are superb, thank God.... The workforce is unchanged, so......
      The German management don't have bullshit like 'a key for the executive bathroom' & like affectations, harking back to the 'them & us' labour-relations of the past...

    I was more familiar with the Rolls Royce brand in the 70s than Bentley. I still have a Rolls Royce Dinkey toy that I used to admire as a kid. I became more familiar with Bentley in the 80s after reading about Karl Lagerfeld's collections of Bentleys that he had in each of his mansions. That's when it first piqued my interest. I then sat in one about 25 years ago at a car show. About 7 years ago as I was walking along a busy street, I heard the roar of two engines that sounded unfamiliar and unlike typical sports cars. I turned around and saw two Bentleys racing each other in Seoul, Korea. That's not something that you see in most city streets. I finally had the pleasure of driving a Bentley during one of their special events a few weeks ago. I chose the Flying Spur out of all of their models and what a ride it was! I got to drive it for half an hour along the beach. All seats have massagers, so you can get a massage while driving or as a passenger in any of the other seats. One of the most impressive characteristics of the model I drove is its acceleration. I drove a Porsche, Jaguar and BMW many years ago but the nicest car I drove a few months ago was a Maserati. Not anymore. The Flying Spur is a dream. I literally felt like I reliving one of the many pleasant dreams that I've had. The car doesn't even lurch back the slightest bit when you accelerate. The steering wheel doesn't move right or left the slightest upon quick take off. The car is like a solid piece of steel that does't make you nervous when accelerating. Truly an amazing experience. The braking wasn't as impressive as I expected but it also didn't disappoint. English cars truly are the epitome of luxury and class that make German cars seem like Toyotas and Hondas. My dream car was an Aston Martin Lagonda 36 years ago. Aston Martin designers use Fibonacci numbers, which is why the car looks perfectly balanced, proportional, and among the most beautiful of sports cars...if not the most beautiful. But I now prefer the Bentley's design. It's very refreshing to see such a beautiful car in a sea of boring, ubiquitous designs. Some like the Mercedes Benz look unappealing and foreboding.

Brits have also won 47 Grand Prix motorcycle championships, the US 17 times. When it comes to world class car and bike racing the Brits have won far more than Americans. Last but not least a Brit holds the land speed record, 763 mph. The US is the land where they have World Championships but don’t allow other countries to compete, yep US teams always win the World Series and the Super Bowl!
