- The Galaxy S 4. It's a name that commands respect: one that strikes fear into the hearts of other smartphones, and incites envy in the eyes of would-be buyers. As our full review reinforces, it's a name that represents one of the best Android smartphones you can buy today.
But the Galaxy S 4 isn't just one phone: it's a device family comprised of many globally-specific variants. The SPH-L720 we reviewed last week was built especially for the American carrier Sprint, and while it's functionally identical to the other American operator variants, it has significantly less in common with its most-popular global sibling, the GT-I9500.
The predominant distinction between them is the SoC, which on the 9500 is the much-talked-about Exynos 5 Octa, Samsung's 28nm "eight-core" unit boasting a pair of Cortex quad-core CPUs lashed together. Due to an assumed shortfall in Samsung's ability to create the LTE-capable Octa SoCs, the manufacturer opted to ship American units with the Snapdragon 600 instead, and indeed, that's what our Sprint friend here is packing.
If you're wondering just how much difference an Exynos "octa-core" heartbeat makes when compared to one of Qualcomm's latest quad-core processors, you've come to the right place. Join us in the video above for a comparison of the GT-I9500 and the SPH-L720. We'll tour the hardware packed inside, the performance of the software on each unit, and we'll even talk battery life and camera to get you as close as possible to answering the question "which of these should I be thinking of blowing a few Benjamins on?" (Spoiler alert: if you're an American, it's probably the cheaper one.)
For full benchmarks and more, visit us on April 30, 2013 after 7am EDT at
(Spec fans: sorry for the erroneously interchangeable use of "CPU" and "SoC" in this video. We didn't catch it until after the upload.)

Thanks for watching! All game names are stated in the VO. Can't recall them all now; too late here in the US. :) ^MF
Can't post the link here at the moment, but the RSS and download links are always posted along with the podcast at Pocketnow. Thanks for asking, and for listening!
I don't like saying "octa-Core" I love saying, yeah my phone has "dual quad core" lolz
You good? It’s been 7years lol
Video just went live. As the big yellow box says, quality will improve once processing is complete. ^MF
If I got a tablet to play game but some big game lag does it have to do with the Ram or quad core ?
How well does the Gorilla Glass 3 screen hold up? Do you feel the need to put a screen protector on the phone? Thanks and great video
Pretty succinct explanation of the long version, which we offer at 1:08.
Thanks very much for this review. Clear, to the point and informative.
U should do a hard core gaming review on both devices
I am confuse, wich is better for game and if they are the same display and resolution?
Love you guys. Thanks for all the great info you put together for your viewers. Really helpful stuff.
so i have a question, you say it is the same on both devices on gaming? which one is slighter better for gaming or is it the same?
So pocketnow, i dont really understand the part about the Adreno 320.
So is the Adreno 320 on the US Variant , a better graphics chip than the one found on the International version of the S4?
Personally in my country im getting the octa-core S4. Im rather excited.
Hey is there a price different between the 2 models at Fortress or Broadway?
probably the best phone review I've seen I love how you did the real world tests as that is something that people do not do usually in these phone video reviews
First, thanks for the great comparison video!
Second, I'd like to ask how fast is the HSPA on the GS4 on ATT? I saw really great speed there!
not everything was the same for battery life. You left the s view cover on for the quad core. doesn't it drain battery for it to sense the cover?
Where did you buy the octa core? Couldn't find it on amazon so far
oh and MOST important, i almost forgot! Does the Sprint model have SIM slot and if so, have you tried it out and played with the APN Settings? ty!! BTC
Awesome I was hoping you guys were going to do a video on this thanks
That's not true. The Exynos 5 Octa does indeed support all 20 LTE bands. The GT-I9500 does not, however.
Can someone tell me which should I buy, which one is better overall and for gaming specifically?
is there any overheating issues with the octa core variant which u tested?
so is the i9506 better ? and does it have kitkat ?
Thanks for the great video upload! Answered all my questions
hi, can anybody PLEASE tell me which model is better? i mean between the m919v or the i337, im about to buy one of those two, but please someone tell me which should i buy
guys what do prefer the quad core version or the octa core version..please help me and which does support LTE
i live in a place where 4g will not be available too soon(maybe next year with high prices), should i get the quad core or the octa core?
the less powerfull quad is worth the wait for the 4g?
you made the comparision saying that the 4g is cheaper, but that is for us only, in my country the 3g variant is cheaper (not by much, but it is).
Finally , a video i was waiting for a long time :) thanks !
very interesting. thx mate. just got an octa core and i cant tell the difference, but now i can see the trail specs and understand what the market campaign had in mind.
@pocketnowvideo the i9505 lagged a bit in user interface compared to i9500?
Sorry - that's an insert shot from our SGS4 vs SGS3 video, with the 4G version of the '4. 3G speeds are horrible on AT&T compared to LTE in this area (Greater Boston) ^MF
how is best, octa or quad core? (for play games and speed?
so whats version of galaxy s4 we get in uk-please let me know
What is the price of both the phones...also can you please tell whether i can use LTE version by unlocking...
Just watched this on my HTC One with my stuck pixel I just found. SMH! Only a week old. Anyway to fix it or should I take it back for a new one?
at the beginning i saw one galaxy s4 with "Galaxy S4" on the back(while the other phone didn't have it)... where is it later in the Video (both didn't have it)?? wanted to see a visual difference concerning the design.
"Galaxy S4"-sign: 0:35 , 1:30
where is it at 0:52 or 5:28?
is there too much lag in either of the two variants....is it more laggy than the htc One?? there are two main places where i don't want to see lag, one is in the dialer, and the other in messaging!! suggestions appreciated!! :)
Is it worth ot changing to lte version of galaxy s4?
Nice to see the improvement in quality from PocketNow!
Nice video, keep it up!
which one is this best to have a big cpu or a lot core???...^_^
I remember using the Galaxy S4 .. now I am watching this video with my Galaxy S21 Ultra !! It is amazing how phone changed !! 👍
I thought you can still choose to put your music, pictures, videos, and whatever other files you might have into the sdcard and access them via the file manager app?
Sso whats better? I9500 or i9505?
one had bluetooth on in the battery test.or it was just a representation?
i don't use LTE and i can get both phones at exactly the same price , which one should i get and why?
also , i saw another battery test and it showed the opposite (according to gsmarena) , which has the better battery life after all?
hi, if I don not use 4g which is better for aps games camera and updates of all things ?
but there will be upgrades of CPU, GPU, camera, and battery for the next new phone right?
Hi fapsian24, does the Galaxy S4 I9505 in Hong Kong has 4g 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600?
The comparison video was great!! Thanks for it..
Now, would you recomend me to buy the Quad core version instead the Octa version? Since Octa core version has diferences but are not of great importance, for example, the battery life, the diference between them is little... I hope you yo answer me, and again, the video was GREAT!
Sorry for my English, I am from Argentina...
Hi, recently I knew that the American S4 has two types, with SIM chip, and with out SIM chip.
What is the different between them?
Which one do you get in Sweden?
Excellent review, best I have come across. Keep up the good work!
Does the International version suffer from overheating after a long period of time?
Hi, what happen if You test snapdragon 600 working on LTE and exynos 5 octa working on HSPA+ at the dame time? Whats up with battery charge on snapdragon 600 and benchmarks etc? Thankssss
what is that custom kernel called? I mean what is its name ?
Also, is the GT-I9500/Octa-Core available to buy in the UK yet, is just that LTE isn't used that massively yet, except for EE/T-Mobile.
how much core does the quad & octa?
Does it have the same shape?
One question, the S4 i9500 Octa-core version , works on 4G, the people of Samsung say than that version works on 20 different LTE networks , you know some about that ?
So the i9500 is a little bit faster? What advantage does the i9505 have?
Sound/phone call quality is the same?
which on is better for games ?
Could be a market- or browser-specific feature. Sorry about that. ^MF
Does this video mean that the difference between 3g and 4g internet speed is only about 10%? (that's what speedtest shows in the vide). Please let me know if understood the review wrong.
Nice video. What is the name of the game you were testing?
Greetings
What is the name of the game with watershooteres?
Great job on this video Michael.
Is the octa core the GT-I9500 or GT-I9500x?
I just like how the octa core version has it's own Samsung boot logo and sound
just curious, just wanna know how to differentiate the s4 quad-core n the s4 octa-core??
the transparent notification bar is a mod or it's stock?
Can you provide an English source for that? The one you linked was in Turkish, and there are obviously going to errors in translation/interpretation if that's your source. English news sites covering the Exynos 5 have clearly stated that only one 'bank' of cores (4 each) can be active at any one time, it's both a hardware limitation AND a limitation of the (current) OS.
Thank you this is the comparison that I needed to make my decision. So now I can get my AT&T version.
Ahhh... I'm lost... So what of these two is better in this video? 1,6Ghz or 1,9Ghz?
How do you know if your s4 is a quad core cause I have a s4 but don't know if its a quad core?
what games were you playing (all of them)
does the octa core version lag too? I tested the s600 version and it lagged, especially in the widget menu. very disappointing
Good review I have the GS4 on Sprint and wanted to know if my choice not to do the Octa was a good one. You definitely confirmed my decision.
whats the difference from the quadcore to the octacore???pleas someone...i dont understand
I am in UK and have i9505. But the mobile network settings doesnt show option for LTE , just gsm and wcdma. Wats wrong. I am on 3 network. Could it be the reason???
Which part of EU doesn't use LTE? And what is this faster network than LTE?
in India , which model is available ? octa or quad?
also does the international version has the "Galaxy S4" on its battery cover like the U.S. version??
5:36 Bluetooth is enabled on the left one, but not the right one.. probably made a difference?
On the Snapdragon version, can't you just turn on power saving to limit cpu power and effectively get the same effect as the octa core model? Then turn it off when you need the extra power.
I have watched it 5 times and still can't decide. What would you recommend for me. I play games a lot and use Facebook, twitter, Instagram, browser and youtube a lot also
Which one do you prefer and why out of the octa and quad core? and also do you know if the i9505 has dual shot camera mode like the i9506? thx
Octa better
@pocketnowvideo : I think you messed up the specs at 1:10 where you wrote 1x1.6GHz Cortex A15 and 1x1.2Ghz Cortex A7 , instead of 4x1.6GhzCortexA15 and 4x1.2Ghz Cortex A7 . Its may sound minow , but it may confuse people may think its similar to Nvidia's 4+1 companion core architecture. Great comparison by the way.
Should I just buy s3 and wait for a newer device in the future ?
where can I buy the international version unlocked in US?
wow wait... wat???the octa core version 4g version has a problem with the android? i dunt understand?
how can i know whether my phone is snadragon 600 or exynos 5410
Informative video. Thanks for the upload !!
Which one produces more heat?
Is it just me or are the Samsung logos on the front and back of the international version chrome? Vs. the Sprint version which just seems to have them painted.
can someone please tell me wich one is better?.because I haven't got time to watch the whole video.
What we got 4g/LTE on the i9505 here in Norway?
Wait a minute.. so the t mobile version is the octa core version? That's the I9500 right? I wasn't paying close attention sorry
Does The S4 Have Photo Sphere?
