- Learn how to fill a shape with an image in Photoshop, and how to move the shape and the image to a new background! There are two main ways to fill a shape with an image in Photoshop. One is by using a clipping mask, and the other is with a vector mask. Both are easy to use, and both can produce the same results. But if your goal is to move the shape and the image to a new background, then vector masks have the advantage.
The reason is that a clipping mask always needs two separate layers, one for the image and one for the shape. But with a vector mask, the image and the shape are on the same layer. So when it's time to move the effect to a new background, we're moving one layer instead of two! Let's see how it works.
To follow along, you'll need Photoshop 2020 or later. That's because we'll be drawing our shape using the Shapes panel which is new as of 2020. If you're using an earlier version of Photoshop, or you want to learn how to create this same effect using a clipping mask, check out my previous video: • How to Fill a Shape wi... .

Hi everyone, Steve here. In this video, you'll learn how to place an image into a shape with Photoshop, and how to move the image and the shape to a new background. This is an update to a previous video where I showed you how to fill a shape with an image using a clipping mask. This time, we'll create the same effect but with a vector mask! The benefit with a vector mask is that both the image and the shape are on the same layer. So moving them to a new background is as easy as moving that one layer! We also look at how to draw shapes using the new Shapes panel in Photoshop CC 2020, and how to load hundreds of hidden shapes that you can use with your image! Leave any questions or comments below, and thank you so much for watching!
Do you have Discord? I couldn't duplicate a Path. Please help me.
Could you help me. I have a simple sparrow bird with a background image filling it. I want to delete the background from the sparrow leaving the shape and fill it with another background watercolor. I can't seem to figure out how to delete the orginal background
I swear you are one the best teachers on photoshop on youtube, I did not know photoshop at all, I started following most of the teachers to realize that they treat us like we expect even when they say the lessons are for beginners, since i started watching your video I have improved a lot and I am considering myself an expert in my own right, thank you so much for taking your time to even make notes on your videos
Another great tutorial where I have learned how to do 2 different things in PS that I never knew how to do. & they are both very useful in my work. Thank you so much for your style of teaching is the best I've seen / heard so far. You go slow enough & show us exactly what to do, even I can do this. Thanks so much !!
Thanks for the excellent explanation.
Thank you very much , that is great tutorial. Keep it up.
What a great tutorial, Steve. I'd be wracking my brain trying to figure out how to place the shape and image. This was my first time creating a vector mask. It was so easy to follow and I was able to accomplish what I needed. Thank you.
Great to hear it was helpful. Thanks for your comments and for watching!
Your videos are very helpful. Even if I don’t want to do this application, the steps taught are marvelous. I’m new to photoshop.
Great to hear you're learning Photoshop, and that my videos are helpful. Thank you so much for watching!
Your videos are so helpful not like the others. They just record the photos they edited. Step by step is very helpful specially for the newbies. By the way i wish you make a tutorails about putting deferent kinds of effects on a photo. And how you edit your Video. Hope you notice me. 🤗
Thank you!!!
Janna, me too, just about to pull my hair out. I love the timeline though. Easier to go back again and again to where you forget/stuck. Handy for beginners.
Awesome tutorial 👍

This video helped me a lot, thank you!
Great to hear it. Thank you for watching!
Very informative tutorial, thanks for sharing
You're very welcome. Thank you for watching!
Thank you! Very Nice. When you move the shape to the new background then it is difficult to enlarge the size of the shape and image. Right? Whatever we need to do has to be done before we move it to the new background. Is that Correct?
I was ready to pull my hair out until I saw this video. THANK YOU!
I'm desperate to do this - and your voice is so calming! but I don't have the "shapes" panel when I click on the Wiindow bar. I do have the latest version as I subscribe to Photoshop monthly. HELP!
thanks bruh

Thank you for watching!
Nice
Thanks! I hope it was helpful.
To the point as always! Excellent! Maybe you can help me? I have a silhouette of a bird and I want to put a colorful background inside this bird silhouette and keep everything outside transparent. Is not this process here in this video or clipping mask (I've tried)... I hope you can help me Steve. Thanks in advance and congratulations! Your channel is helping me and sooo many others big time :)
Steve, I did it! I followed the instructions on your video 'place an image in text', but instead the text I used my silhouette and it worked perfectly! The only different thing to do is 'merge visible' once all is done, 'select object', and hit 'delete' button on the keyboard and all the white background is now transparent. I can't thank you enough! I've been trying to this for a long time. God bless you, always!
Great job! Glad to hear that the other video helped!
thank YOU Steve! I couldn't have done without you ;)
Hi Steve, can I get shapes in cs6 at all?
Hi Steve,
Great tutorial as always entitled, Place an Image in a Shape with Photoshop CC 2020, thank you.
I do however actually have a question for you though, a while ago you also did a tutorial entitled,
(- Photoshop Gold Text Effect -), which was excellent, the question is how does this
(- Gold Text Effect -) look when you print it out onto say Gloss Paper or even Business Card Design, PLEASE.
I really look forward to hearing your reply.
Hi Mac, the only issue I can think of when printing the gold text is that you want to make sure you've created the effect at a high enough size and resolution for the letters to look crisp and sharp when printed. As you may know, print uses a higher resolution than display devices, so an effect that looks sharp on your monitor may look soft when printed. If possible, ask the person who will be printing the effect for the size and resolution they need. Then create a Photoshop document at that size and create the effect. I hope that helps!
@@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel Hi Steve,
I would truly like to offer you my sincere thanks for your reply, I have the highest and utmost respect for you, now and in the future.Thank you once again.
@@machouston6448 Always glad to help. :)
how come when I click the path button, the window is empty? I don't see my shape. Thanks
Can anyone tell me why I do not have the "paths" tab in my Photoshop?
like your voice
Can we use clipping mask for the same effect
Yes, I have another video showing how to create the effect using a clipping mask: th-cam.com/video/SEQc1qkn3DE/w-d-xo.html
I need help
When you added the heart shape, it automatically came with a border that you would click on and transform the heart
Ever since I updated, I no longer have that border to click onto. How do I bring it back?
If you press Ctrl+T (Win) / Command+T (Mac) after adding the shape, does the Free Transform box appear around the shape?
@@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel yes when I press that the border appears but that's not my problem.
I recently purchased a new laptop and when I downloaded photoshop to the new laptop, all the settings were different.
Now when I press crtl-T it does allow me to transform it but not like in the past version.
It's hard to explain. When I use control+T I get a solid border around it. How do I get the dashed border that allows me to adjust the proportions?
@@Tardvark Do you mean the transform controls that you can turn on when using the Move Tool? If so, select the Move Tool from the toolbar and then select Show Transform Controls in the Options Bar. Let me know if that helps.
@@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel thank you. I do not know the lingo specific to photoshop so that was so damn hard to find the solution to my problem but you did it.
Thank you so very much. Ive been dealing with this problem for over a week now.
@@Tardvark Glad I could help. :)
