@@Dirtmonkey I'm interested in getting certified and licensed here in south Florida. Want to start with residential. What do you think of leasing all large equipment and keeping an inventory of handheld tools, hammer drills, sawzalls, sledgehammers etc. Want to enter the field with as little overhead as possible

Really one of the first things you do when you start tearing in to a house is you break the main floor and start stuffing all that debris in to the basement or crawl space and grind it up as small as you can so you can fit as much as possible in to the roll off bins or dump trucks.

Just started with my grandpa who’s been doing demos for years. Just did a house with only a 138 excavator and a pitchfork. Easiest money ever. Only thing was we had to use 2 100 yard containers to clear it out💰.

Does it make sense to just buy a dump trailer and haul the debris yourself? You could also use it to transport the mini excavator. Seems like those dumpster prices would quickly add up to more than a big dump trailer. Surely you could find an old retired guy to drive back and forth to the dump for 10 bucks an hour.

Best advice would be not to start one. It's a dirty business full of morons. If you want to be constantly exposed to things like mercury and asbestos go for it but if you want to live a long healthy life go into something else.

  • @Tylerl128

DO NOT be scared to rent tools, especially if you only use them for a huge job, it saves you a lot of money, you can get a better quality tool for cheaper, than if you paid for it outright. if it's something you will need often, you might as well buy it, and I always say if its worth buying one it worth buying two. Sometimes you can return them if its the factories fault, sometimes you cant so its great to have a back up. Redundancy is key, ask an engineer, or any businessman they will say the same, always have a backup tool, part or somewhere where you know in a pinch you can get it.

Hi Luke, you should look at andrew camarata's channel, he started working on stuff as a young guy and he has some great info.
I noticed that he started fixing lawnmowers and selling them when he was young - he would get them out of peoples' trash, just buy the parts he needed and then put them out for sale in front of his house. It seems like it's a good way to learn about machines. Learn welding as early as you can, also, that's a skill that's expensive to pay people for and not so expensive if you can do it yourself. Dirt bikes too, that's a good small motor to work on. Fixing motors and repairing equipment is the expensive part of a business like this so you want to be able to fix your own equipment whenever possible.

that dusty insurlation suck to clean up ! I did a 500 foot by 46 foot build which was chicken coop and that stuff was in the ceiling of it . we bagged all up and it took 10 loads in 6 wheel dump truck to move that dirty dusty stuff. it was something we had to do because we was taking almu ceiling and roof off .that dusty stuff and building fell down half way thought taking it down was the worst part of the whole job.

@@ShorelineBillionaire We did, I was able to take out a small business loan, we hired her brother and my cousin full time, my mom does record keeping and accounting, we are all invested time and money. I quit teaching and got my training and license as a heavy machine operator. We're still small and growing, but now we have the ability to demolish small houses and sometimes trees with our wench. I am having fun, making more money than being a teacher, and enjoy working with my family. My wife is expecting btw! Our little half Mexican-American and half Jamaican-American is on his way. Our daughter is ecstatic! Hopefully we can build this business into something great to leave to our kids.

Stanley, I happened upon my first demo job having never even considered doing it before. I have decided to have a go at it as a business. Besides word of mouth, what is the best way for someone starting out to find jobs? I have listed my business on some of the free online places (yellow pages, Yelp) and I have a Facebook page, are there any suggestions on ways to get more jobs?

I moved to Missouri almost 3 years ago. I noticed that there are a lot of dilapidated houses here. I had the thought of a business taking down the houses. Unfortunately I would have to do it with hand tools. I mean with shovel, sledgehammer, latter, and prybar. I am told that I would need liability insurance and permits as well. I guess it just isn't a good idea since I don't have that kind of money.

I don't agree with buy as needed basic mechanics tools ( wrenches & sockets) if you know how to spin wrenches you need them when you start so if a bolt or nuts comes loose when running some pc of equipment you can tighten it before some part falls off and get lost
