Absolute legend Dan - Mrs was complaining all evening yesterday when I got back from work at 7pm as she wanted to take the chill off the house and the CH was not working. Called our plumber this morning and he was off on his leave (fair enough) but said to Google you - all fixed and working again via this and Mrs happy - happy wife - happy life!!!! Cheers mate - lets hope it kicks in tomorrow morning! 🙂
Fixed my issue, thanks! Pump was running, but there may have been an air lock or debris because now all 3 zones work. Lots of spitting of air before flow began. I unscrewed it each time I turned on a zone, same each time. Much appreciated!
You sir are an absolute legend, bless you! Coming into winter, a five year old and a 10 month old baby and the council don't have after hours apparently. All sorted thanks to you 👍🏼
Worked a treat! Pump had been inactive for 6 months & jammed. Working perfectly now in the chilly climate of north of England (bring on global warming I say!). Thx. 👍
Thanks for the video. I had flushed my hot water tank and the pump was locked up due to air in the line. I opened the top cap 5-6 times to vent off the air and everything works as expected!
Another extremely thankful person here! We had cold water for 2 days. Our boiler wasn’t pumping water, kept getting f.22 error even when the pressure gauge was at 1.5. I just did this to the pump inside the boiler and voila! Hot water in our taps again! Told my husband I wanted to kiss you, he wants to kiss you too 😂😂😂😂. THANK YOU!🎉
Water Pressure!: Thank you Dan, my pump is integrated within the combi boiler. My first (and only!) suspician was the pump, which was confirmed by your excellant video. So I checked it to make sure that it was, as you suggested, not jammed by summer inactivity. After a while of fiddling with the pump and it not starting up and it appeared to be free, my thoughts, confirmed by yours, indicated that a replacement pump was needed. What a pity, but there you are! At which point, my eyes inadvertantly strayed onto the boilers water pressure guage where I noticed the pressure was very low. Doh! I topped the system up and the pump sprung into life. Ach, I should have checked that first! I hope this helps others!
At 2.28 Dan says because it can turn - the electics are burnt out. But turning it can free deposits and gunge. So reconnect power and it works ! Great positive explanation nevertheless !
So you can basically keep the water supply to the system (including the pump) and also power to the system on and can unscrew it, right? Thanks a lot btw!😊
Thanks so much for posting this trick! We came back from vacation and found no heat in the house. Then I started searching the web and found your video. I did not even had to go any further than just unscrewing the first screw. After I started turning it off, just less than a half turn, the pump started working. My pump is Armstrong, Astro 23CI. You saved me a lot of money! Happy New Year and best wishes to you and your family!
I have done this before to unfree pumps. Sometimes even tapping a pump with a mallet or handle of a mallet works (don't hit it with a hammer!). Unfortunately I can't do it this time because the plumbers have faced the pump inwards towards the boiler. I suspect the start/run capacitor may be at fault though. Anyway a useful video. 👍
How do you unscrew the big screw. Seems tight. Tried using a screw driver bu my screw driver is too small. Tried using pliers and a coin but it bent the coin.
looking for info on my system(heating my house & water) from a Trinity installed system about 10 years ago, that uses this same red pump that works but keeps running well after(like an hour) ending my usage of hot water (don't need heating at this time of year in Canada). Should I perform this operation of loosening? It does get quite hot.
hi dan we have problem with the wall thermosat that we have to have it on at 30 but when we turn it down to 20 it comes on but goes off and does not come back on when the rooms have cooled down so we changed thermosat but problem still continues could this fault be caused by the water pump.
@@PlumbingGy I filed a gap in a flathead to make a "snake eye" profile and managed to apply enough torque to break the screw head, still seized though 😂 Thanks for prompt reply!
I had one that wouldn't run but was free and, from a check of the winding resistance, still OK from that point of view. What had failed was the capacitor (2uF, the value of the capacitor in the case of the pump you have there is printed on the label). I located a suitable replacement (it has to be a 450vac type often simply called a motor run capacitor) and fitted it (a fairly easy job) and its been back in service for many years. Way cheaper than a new pump.
Thanks for the video, really good. When I undo the big brass screw on mine I have what looks like a square fitting in there and can’t use a screwdriver. Any ideas what tool I need to use please?
Your videos are so helpful thank you! But could the pump be faulty even if some of the rads get hot + hot water cylinder but all other rads furthest from pump are all cold?
@@PlumbingGy thank you for following up!! Yes there is a 2 port diverter valve next to the pump which diverts water between central heating and hot water cylinder
Hi there, the pump shouldn’t be spraying out with force normally a small trickle of water to say that it has been bled from the bleed screw. If you are experiencing a lot of water I would suggest it needs replacing.
@@PlumbingGy Thanks a million for your speedy reply. Maybe I was confusing with my question. So basically, I usually do something like your video, when there is an airlock, where I only have to loosen the screw a little until it bleeds out the lock. This time as I haven’t used it for several months during summer, I’m guessing might just be a little stuck, but when I open the screw completely the water keeps pouring out. I thought maybe if I tightened the valve immediately above and below the pump it would stop the water for me to remove the screw and turn the impeller a little?
I have tried doing this but aborted mission as there was alot of water coming out the pump even before i took the screw fully out. Is this normal or do I need to turn the water supply to the pump off first?
In my case it's the valve that's stuck or gets stuck when the motor tries to turn it.WD40 has helped but I have to remove the.motor to start the water circulating. Replace or ?
Hello! Can anyone help me with my issue? @@PlumbingGy hi Dan thanks for quick reply water is trickling out of vent screw when you take off but doesn't seem to stop I just thought a little water would come out and then stop but mine didn't stop trickling out
Hi Peter no it's meant to trickle out when the vent is off as long as it stops and seals when the screw is replaced you are ok 👌🏻. The vent screw is removed to release any air when the air has purged water will begin to trickle out when this happens replace the screw and reseal.
Hi there, Follow the steps in this video to see if the motor is spinning I have a feeling the pump motor has burned out. Just be sure it isn't air locked for any reason. Thanks
am i correct -is he saying if spindle is turning freely-its burnt out and needs a new pump at 2.33------- other videos say it needs to be turning freely in order to circulate water?
This is just an initial thought but it could be a faulty motor within the pump, especially if its getting very hot. Too hot to touch? The additional burning sounds backs this up to be honest, Just give the installer a call to return as u suspect the motor, when he gets there make sure its not just air running through the pump and creating an air lock. hope this helps
That's a cool trick with spinning the stator with the screwdriver! Unfortunately, you can't do that with the common Taco pumps. I disagree with your comment to check the pumps every year during the summer. Their is really nothing you can do if they stop on you, so why bother? Have a backup pump handy and get on with it. Also, the comment about the pump needing to be replaced if it doesn't turn under power is false. Many times wire nuts shake loose in the electric box and cause a disconnect (or if the wire breaks ). Check for electricity before making assumptions like that. Thanks again!
Hi Dan, don't know if you're still replying on here but would the knocking I hear be this? I've got hot water but no heating. Condensing boiler. Thanks.
Hi Jim it’s very difficult to diagnose something like this just over messages where is the knocking coming from? It could be pipework through heat expansion.
Hi Dan, As I'm unscrewing there is a lot more than a dribble coming out and it has a bit of pressure behind it too. So I've stopped and hopefully you can advise what to do now? Should i isolate the system?
There should not be a build up of pressure, I would advise let an expert take a look as the pump may need replacing, or go ahead and isolate the pump valves and replace it yourself 👍🏻
Hi Dan, cheers for the rapid reply. It wasn't a lot of pressure but there was some squirting. There was probably 500ml of water but I think that could do with the pumps location. Turned my heating on for the first time this winter today. The timer for both water and heating showed both switching off at the set time but the pump continued running. I presume the valve is stuck in the pump. Is it a case of having the pump changed again or is there something I can do before calling someone out? It seems to happen every couple of years, despite having the systems flushed.
Thanks for your reply. I switched everything off including electrics last night, switched it back on again, reset the time etc and tonight the pump switched off as normal within about 5 minutes or so of the heating/water going off. Not sure if you’re still active or not but mine is a little different. It’s more like a nut so can’t use flathead, also has a black plastic top. Is it the same process? Hope you’re well
Excellent sir. It worked first time exactly as you said. And there was me thinking I was going to have to lay out for a new pump 🙄. Always ask a man who actually knows what he's doing 😀.
Can anyone help? I'm getting a knocking sound near the pump. The boiler fires up for heating but then chugs out and stops firing. The knocking is every 3 seconds or sound. I've done this and it hasn't helped
My heater is continuously humming, I've tried bleeding the system but nothing works, it happens on all 3 settings continuously on and engaging the boiler to kick in every few minutes
I turned Central heating off, then removed screw, water continuously came out slowly but enough to soak the rag. I turned the internal screw wit no resistance and it would push in and out if I put pressure on it then release the pressure. I replaced outer screw and switched back on but still no heating?!
If you have removed then big brass screw from the front with a large flat head screwdriver and it is trickling water then the pump is bled and no more air is in there, screw the screw back in tight and test 👍🏻
@@PlumbingGy thanks for your reply! I rewatched your video and I just realised that I didn't turn on the central heating before doing it, could the flow of water be because it wasn't turned on or there's definitely something wrong with it?
Hi carol, if it's jammed yes. Make sure it's switched off and you get get inside to spin and free up the pump. If you are removing air then you don't remove the screw just loosen. Hope this helps
@@PlumbingGy Forgot to ask you Dan, i have outdoor condenser boiler so have pump out there, theres also one in the hotpress upstairs and one beside the fireplace for backboiler, whats the one in hotpress for?? Do i have to cut out the main elec switch for house?? Thanks for info😚
Hi carol, This would be an educated guess as I don't know what system your running but 'GENERALLY' a pump located in a hotpree or storage space would be for the hot water or for pumped showers, as for the wiring it depends how it's wired in. I'm hoping it goes to a separate spurr? If so you can just isolate it by removing a fuse, if not I'm afraid you will have to find out the correct circuit and isolate before working on it. I hope this helps.
I'm not really sure what you mean, if you mean the valves that the pump is connected to yes close them. Also only work on it if the pump is not running (all off) 👍🏻

Excellent sir. It worked first time exactly as you said. And there was me thinking I was going to have to lay out for a new pump 🙄. Always ask a man who actually knows what he's doing 😀.
Thank you glad it helped you 💪🏻
That pump in that orientation ain't great for a pump but sometime unavoidable. More risk of air in the system and burning motor out.
Thank you, totally agree and as you know almost always unavoidable 😆👌🏼
Can anyone help? I'm getting a knocking sound near the pump. The boiler fires up for heating but then chugs out and stops firing. The knocking is every 3 seconds or sound. I've done this and it hasn't helped
My heater is continuously humming, I've tried bleeding the system but nothing works, it happens on all 3 settings continuously on and engaging the boiler to kick in every few minutes
Oh my god. You've fixed my central heating. Awesome.
Mine seems to be working properly but if I take cover off water pours out and won't stop does this mean it needs replacing
You mean the bleed screw ? Of so this is normal and should slowly trickle water
did you end up fixing it? i had the same problem with water pouring out.
@@byedwardleung no just left it seems to be working ok
Hi - 'DIAD' - what you did not say is what happens if when you go to turn that 'thingy' it doesn't turn?
New pump 👍🏻
I turned Central heating off, then removed screw, water continuously came out slowly but enough to soak the rag. I turned the internal screw wit no resistance and it would push in and out if I put pressure on it then release the pressure. I replaced outer screw and switched back on but still no heating?!
Pump doenst seem to be running?!
I would check any additional valves on the system, 2 port valves etc
Thanks so much.
Hi, my pump is very warm is that normal?
Some warmth is ok as long as it’s not too hot to touch
Thank you 1000x... So simple... My pump works again!!!
Water keeps trickling out of mine (like when you air a radiator) is that normal?
Not if the screw is tight no
@@PlumbingGy From the inside (once outer screw has beeb removed) the water keeps trickling out
If you have removed then big brass screw from the front with a large flat head screwdriver and it is trickling water then the pump is bled and no more air is in there, screw the screw back in tight and test 👍🏻
What happens if you can’t turn the screw inside? Mine is completely jammed!
If you are unable to free it up, it may need replacing
I tried this and I got a continuous flow of water out of the pump instead of a little bit like yours, would you know what causes that?
The pump shouldn't be pouring with water excessively, it will need to be Inspected further to diagnose
@@PlumbingGy thanks for your reply! I rewatched your video and I just realised that I didn't turn on the central heating before doing it, could the flow of water be because it wasn't turned on or there's definitely something wrong with it?
I can't get my screw to loosen
Turning freely so thats ok we need a new pump ??
If the spindle is free it means it's turning as should
I opened mine and water came out of it is the pump gone
No 👍🏻
saved my day, thx!
Do you have to turn off cental heating when you unscrew it??
Hi carol, if it's jammed yes. Make sure it's switched off and you get get inside to spin and free up the pump.
If you are removing air then you don't remove the screw just loosen.
Hope this helps
@@PlumbingGy Thanks a mill Dan, really hope thats all it is 😁
carol lucey no problem at all
@@PlumbingGy Forgot to ask you Dan, i have outdoor condenser boiler so have pump out there, theres also one in the hotpress upstairs and one beside the fireplace for backboiler, whats the one in hotpress for?? Do i have to cut out the main elec switch for house?? Thanks for info😚
Hi carol,
This would be an educated guess as I don't know what system your running but 'GENERALLY' a pump located in a hotpree or storage space would be for the hot water or for pumped showers, as for the wiring it depends how it's wired in. I'm hoping it goes to a separate spurr? If so you can just isolate it by removing a fuse, if not I'm afraid you will have to find out the correct circuit and isolate before working on it.
I hope this helps.
Thank you you saved me some money
Should I close water running on pipes?
I'm not really sure what you mean, if you mean the valves that the pump is connected to yes close them. Also only work on it if the pump is not running (all off) 👍🏻
Great advice.
