So i just got into magic recently.... and i wanted to watch some game play. clicked on this video and OMFG i graduated from high school with jacob. 0.0 what are the odds??
I am biased toward Melira Pod because its so insanely fun to watch but Mclaren played a good control game the whole tournament and I'll give him his credit. I'm just so happy this isn't a bunch of jund and I get to see Pod and Splinter Twin in the pro tour!
It's kind of hilarious to see all the comments from people that just skipped all the rest of the coverage to watch the finals. I'm on the edge of my seat and half of everyone else is like "lol combos are dumb this is boring."
RESPECT! I'm not super well versed in this game, but there is something cool about seeing people who are the best at what they do to this level. Excellent coverage! Reminds me of a more interesting poker tournament on tv. $40,000 prize! Congrats to the winners!
Is there a reason that Jacob does not put elemental tokens into play due to Snapcaster Mage and Lightning Helix being played on his turn? Starting at 1:53:20.
They need to zoom in like poker. I play a lot of magic but don't know all of the cards. Plus I'm picture familiar not name familiar. They probably would x10 the amount of viewers
The fact Shaun could keep that Nodes on the field indefinitely to keep Jacob from playing creatures is kinda crazy. I never would’ve thought of doing that.
i see people commenting, "i play mtg but i don't know whats going on...." casual mtg does not TEACH you the complex game of magic. its not just a nerdy tcg, its a complex sport for sharp minds.
It's nice having LSV doing commentary although sucks for him:P Otherwise I usually find the Pro Tour commentary lacking compared to the SCG-Open commentary, which also involves Legacy and is I guess a bit more advanced. But Cedric Philips and Patrick Sullivan makes an excellent team imo. *edit* That last game was just sad, Jacob drew almost all lands and birds. Shaun didn't draw that well either but his answers matched up good, but yeah, I can agree that this game was kinda slow. If you want a good intense final watch Shuhei Nakamura vs Yuuya Watanabe player's championship 2012.
Why didnt wilson use wall of roots and tap the forest to activate pod sacrificing wall to get kitchen finks to go to 5 then take the 4 and go to 1 in game 4?!?!?!?!?
@@Kristjan0209 at the time of these matches, i was too young to be on the pro scene, but I had dreams of playing in a feature match area against the best in the world. Now those dreams are dead and the modern format I fell in love in, in large part actually due to this video, is now dead
@@yaboi5954 modern isn't dead well at least where I live its the most popular format and a lot of people play it. Online as well there are a lot of modern players
whenever you deal damage to a player from a certain source you can direct that damage to a planeswalker, so you could even lightning bolt a planeswalker
At around 29:30 you can see the commentators along with their names. They are Luis Scott-Vargas, Brian David-Marshall and Rich Hagon. As far as I know the latter two are WOTC employees. BDM came to wizards from being involved with comics and then being one of the first magic tournament organizers I think. Dunno much about Rich Hagon. LSV is basically a pro Magic Player that used to be Editor at Channel Fireball.
So funny, yet a little sad. Rich probably feels like he's being replaced with LSV, and hates on every pun. It's ok Rich!! Just be cool man stop hating on the puns get along with BDM and LSV everything will be o.k. It makes for better entertainment too if you just get along--Your commentary is still great and belongs in the finals with BDM and LSV.
LOL, I love when they start talking about issues with prolonged chair-sitting. All I could think about was "first-world problems." Anyway I'm gonna decklist that UWR deck.
Alec Horvath I disagree, as I mentioned in my comment I think he does sound condescending, however it's like any good pair--You need the serious one to point out the obvious things and strategize, and the comedy backup for analysis/making the match interesting. Rich needs to cool it but BDM is just a less funny LSV. BDM needs to comentate without laughing at every LSV joke and tryiing to make his own puns.
If your talking about when Wilson had a Seer and a Birds, it gets countered by game rules for having no legal targets when it goes to resolve, which counters the spell so no card is drawn.
These voice commentaries do not at all help newcomers to the game. Its like they are commenting with lingo just for veterans. Which doesn't really make any sense since seasoned players don't need their commentary to follow the games. They would get more people into these vids if they spoke more newb friendly. Just my advice.
It is easy to understand that point of view. However, beginning players should not start by watching high level play. For one it makes a person attempt to understand complex interactions prior to understanding simple game mechanics. Their 'lingo' is mostly referencing the players background as well as the history of the game and individual cards. Sports broadcasters do this as well. Yet it is impossible to believe that professional sports arenas are the venues to introducing an amateur to the sport.
I agree blindghostraven! There are lots of formats on Magic, and obviously Modern aren't the best to watch by players without at least some background on Magic! SRNF, the commentaries are exactly that! They are commenting the match, they aren't there to explain every single play, card, decision, rules... That's not why they are there! It's almost like watching a sport channel, expecting that the commentaries were about the game rules!... Just like anyone that are starting at Magic probably wouldn't start playing Modern, that same person shouldn't try to understand advanced mechanics when they didn't even know the basics! That's why Standard is a really nice format to start with! Both playing and watching matches! If you watch a Standard Tournament you will noticed that there is much more "accessible" to those who are starters at Magic!
At the end of turn 4, he could have stayed in the game by not getting anything from the reveillark, so McLauren would be forced to kill his own Colonnade
Travis B True, but then he has just pod on the field and only one mana to play anything. It's better to chump the colonnade and be left with two mana on the next turn, or at least a single creature, a pod and the mana to use it.
Travis B thats wrong. the nodes already destroyed the reveillark. he activated collonade to have nodes in play next turn. But the Collonade would have lived either way
jassepar Actually, what he could have done was activate the Pod, sacking Reveillark in response to the Collonade activation and then fail to find, meaning Shaun has to destroy his own Collonade and Porphyry Nodes goes away. But then he's left with no board except Pod and a land and no real way of casting anything.
I’m watching this to reminisce what modern used to be. I miss it.
same. I miss theros/khans standard too
SAME. hate what wizards has done to the format. They turned modern into Legacy Lite and Pioneer into the new modern.

26:30 how did he cast chord of calling when bird and Noble Hierarch both have summoning sickness ??
Because Chord has Convoke
Read Cord of Calling.
Oh I see, I thought it could add only 1 colorless
1:20:00 We need to get pre-Tour Event draft team analysis on.

because lightning bolt

at 1:22:04 could Jacob have used the wall of roots to generate a green mana, then birthing pod his wall of roots to get a finks?

If you wait a bit, you will see that he indeed loses the life from the Overgrown Tomb and from Birthing Pod, puting him to 16!
2:01:07 interesting that wilson removed harmonic sliver when he could possibly draw eternal witness to get it back as another way to answer threads.

wait im confused. Cards like Redcap can do dmg to Planeswalkers?

gah, I wanted Jacob to win so bad! I just didn't want a control deck to win the tour.

Nope, PT BotG was BotG/Theros/Theros Draft and Modern.
I'm just curious, who are the commentators and their backgrounds?

I don't think "penultimate" means what you think it means.

what's the format of this competition?
***** Thanks dude, I was looking for that here in the commments and I had no idea it usualy said it on the screen.

Why does he play Anger of the Gods over Supreme Verdict/Hallowed Burial?
Hallowed Burial is too expensive (and ineffective against pod) and Supreme Verdict doesn't exile.

Oh LORD! The last two plays were NERVE RACKING! :O
18:40 seems like mclaren wins if he paths the reveillark eot, then kills the birds with nodes on his upkeep.
nodes goes as soon as there are no creatures in play
This is Born of the Gods?
might want to look up the definition of penultimate...
ahh back when blue white red want called jeskai yet
birthing pod was really cool but it had to go. wotc wouldve had to restrict themselves from printing good creatures in fear to break pod
Where is the ProTour Born of the Gods Standard :(
wouldn't the second tectonic edge not activate since you only have 3 lands?
Andrew James he responded to the first activation, thus the 2nd activation on top of the stack still saw the 4 lands
Ryan S thanks for clearing that up
Was the last card cast of game two a Thoughtseize? I'm wondering why McLaren insta-conceded unless it was that.
