A lot of people are confused as to why Lee (the dad) “knew” to stay quiet or realized the key to survival was sound. I don’t think he knew. He just figured that when hiding, you probably shouldn’t make unnecessary noise that could attract a creature. Just as you shouldn’t stand in the middle of the street and jump around waving. He didn’t know that the monsters were blind and only relied on sound. He just knew that they should do as much as possible to stay hidden, just as you would if you were hiding from a murderer or playing hide and go seek. this is genuinely such an amazing scene. For people who have seen the first movie, the movie immediately introduces all the sounds of the world. It emphasises every single one. The grocery bag rustling, the aggressive and quick grabbing of food items and water from the shelves, the heavy and loud foot steps and the camera focusing just a second longer on that dreaded space ship toy, both an emphasis to the death of their son and to the aliens that are fast approaching- then it moves on to the crowds cheering in the baseball game, and then silence when the meteor enters the atmosphere. Everyone is dead quiet. Symbolic of the creatures presence, before people begin to panic, and leave quickly. The dog barking, the sound of the car's horn going off behind Lee being loud enough to shake the ground in the theater- it's amazing. This scene is amazingly shot and portrayed, and the sound design is absolutely spectacular, this is one hell of a opening scene.
That scene where the mom is driving in reverse is probably one of my all time favorite scenes ever. It’s just so terrifying and realistic that it works.

How I knew this was going to be a good movie: John's character booked it the moment he saw the alien. It's so jarring, but refreshingly satisfying to see a character in a horror movie NOT stand and stare at their eminent death.
@Mistress Kiwi im sorry but one character making a common-sense driven decision indeed does not make a 2 hour movie good. Literally a decision. Not a character arc, not a development, not a death, a goddamned _obvious choice._ Just... no. Stop talking.
I love how they stay consistent with the monsters messing with electricity. The radio messes up, the car won't start, calls drop. But also remaining consistent since (I believe) a running cat, especially an older one, wouldn't rely on that many electronics while starting one would require more electronics which explains why running cars are ok but starting one is difficult.

It has NOTHING to do with any of that. It is more about the meteor falling and creating a disruption in the magnetic field. You know, "science". Also, his wife had no problem starting their sedan. His truck didnt start because its an older model truck and older model trucks can be hard to start. It also adds drama as they cant flee, they have to hide out and we get the end to the scence we just saw. BTW, he does eventually get it started.
The best part of this scene is John reacting like: Oh, some weird thing just flipped the police car and made some demonic sound? [ducks, immediately turns around, immediately starts running to escape and protect his child]. No yelling, no screaming, just the perfect definition of: Nope. XD - 6:54

realistically, most official emergency responders to disastrous events encourage peoples to act like this maximize their survival chance while also clear out of potential obstruction! No one need to play unnecessary hero
As someone who has worked in film his whole life, the scene here that really blows my mind starts @1:37 - John walks past ALL THOSE WINDOWS and we NEVER see the camera in the reflection! They had to CG eliminate it in post - perfectly - or this scene would not have worked at all.
I like how the dad doesn't try to go save the rest of his family after they crashed, that's some intense survival instinct to overcome his fear for them.
@@easonzhang1326 Good point, and I love how the movie loses sound when the focus is on the daughter; it gives the audience a feeling of how different her experience is. And I agree, the father probably was way too focused to watch out for his daughter to pay attention to yet another car crash.
I don’t blame them. most People’s, especially parents, first thoughts aren’t “I need to survive I don’t care who dies or what happens” it’s “are my kids okay? are my loved ones okay? did they attack my house? what’s going on? what are these things?” etc. I mean- I’m pretty sure if I was in this situation and I was okay and I was alone I would be doing everything I could to get a hold of my parents and friends to see if their alright.
This scene gives me absolute chills, it reminds me of the Philedelphia scene in World War Z, Everyone chilling like sitting in traffic (WWZ) or playing baseball (this movie) and there's an explosion, everyone anxious not knowing whats going on then boom everything goes to shit and the world ends.
Or 28 Days later. You're not sure what's happening after Jim wakes up and is wandering around confused. Then it all goes to hell in a handbasket once the infected show up.
That's a much different scenario. There's a difference between a small town vs hundreds of thousands of people making desperate escapes and having big explosions
What makes those scenesso effective is how we all know on some level that when shit goes sideways, that's exactly how it will happen to us. We'll all just be living life, worrying about mundane things like bills, work/school, friend and family drama, then the aliens, zombies, terrorists, or whatever will just bulldoze everything. They're effectively terrifying because they're so relateable to our normal lives.
Imagine how terrifying being deaf must be here! She has no idea if people are screaming or being hurt around her, she just sees this giant monster walking in front of the window. Awesome movie.
Monster ominously prowling outside of window while everything is dead silent. Me: “I’m sorry, did everyone inside and outside just stop panicking at the same time? Did the world freeze?”
i love this opening, probably the best opening i've seen in a movie in a long time. the existence of loud general sound in general is what really sells this scene, and what makes it so terrifying, you're waiting for the inevitable,
Both Quiet Place movies are ironically a couple of my favorite sound design movies out there. They do so much with so little and one thing I love about this scene is how jarring it is. Every step, every interaction between objects, every bite that Lee takes of that apple. You really feel it and in a way you kind of get put into the head space of the aliens. You want to silence every tiny little sound that everyone makes.
Love: - the way the sound shifts from "noise & chaos" with the father to "mute" with the deaf daughter; - how quick the father's mind seems to get that being quiet is the key to survival, - the actors' performances and close-ins on their faces. DETAILS MATTER!
6:49 We need scenes like this in MOVIES. The unexpected ominous introduction of the threat that storms with fierce violence the scene. We need good movies that makes these monsters memorable with coherent scripts. The scene with the car WAS and will be an icon in the industry. I wish these creatures gets a good sequel and a better chance. (The depiction of angry PS5 customers who can't find a PS5 is ACCURATE)
Reminds me of the scene in Dawn of the Dead with the car crash which then crashes into the gas station. Of course, this is a bit more intense, but that WTF moment is great in movies.
Imagine living a good life in a town where you know who’s everyone, with your family, all so quiet and having a good day until you see a meteor and you think: “I’m sure that won’t be very bad for us, but we should go home”. And you see some weird ass creatures running through the streets and smacking all things that make noises.
This is what horror is. The horrific silence that this movie dictates, especially when it comes to how the girl is deaf, so through her ears we hear...nothing. its such a jarring detail. She cant hear the commotion, but we as the viewer hear all of it. The meteorite coming down, not making any crashing sound but within minutes of seeing it, the monsters are already there and terrorising the town.
This is probably the best scene I've even seen of this kind. Perfectly set up with a little league ball game, the whole town gathered around the playing field. It's as ordinary a day as can be. Then, the ominous jet trail of the crashing spaceship in the sky, and everyone acting exactly as they should. They're not sure what's going on, but "let's get the kids home safe before we figure out what's what". Because no one reacted stupidly or uncharacteristically, it's that much more jarring when the aliens pop in and start slaughtering. In bad horror movies, all the victims do the dumbest thing possible so we shake out heads and say, "I wouldn't have been that stupid". In this one, it's scary because you know you would probably die if it happened like this around you.
Exactly. Everyone was actually being smart and doing things right like normal people and they _still_ got slaughtered. You're absolutely right - it's scarier because it shows how most of us would still die in that situation regardless of how prepared we think we are.
Such a great franchise.. A horror film that's actually scary, suspenseful , immersive , emotional.... I feel that the two films are both such great works of art that you actually feel like you're inside of the movie. The first time I watched the first movie was the first time that I had ever heard of the film. Please let part three stay the course and not switch to a whole different plot
I'm worried if they do try to make a part 3 because I'm wondering where can they go with the story? If they can get a good new plot I'm all for it 100% I will say that but man that's pulling a rabbit out of a hat right there lol
Both movies were fine horror films. But to me, this opening scene stands alone. It is an instant classic and could stand by itself as a perfect 10 minute movie. This is movie making distilled down into its finest elements.
6:44 This scene shows just how fast those creatures are, the moment that (meteor I'm assuming) lands the creature is already heading towards the police car at sonic speed. (Don't take the sonic speed thing to literally btw, just an expression)
before the main impact happened, there were several "small parts" landing on earth in different parts, so alot of them probably already landed before and started killing humans, before the main thing landed.
@@Daquan0394 Its just an expression lmao. All I did was choose a strong word to specify that they are fast. And I get what you're gonna say next "Yes but people may interpret this the wrong way." this is genuinely such an amazing scene.

- the way the sound shifts from "noise & chaos" with the father to "mute" with the deaf daughter;
- how quick the father's mind seems to get that being quiet is the key to survival,

That actually made me jumped

I don't like horror movies but this is brilliant. The muted segments are great.

I totally agree

Like what 2 did?
@@zydration3538 you're not wrong there, was not expecting them to go and make a prequel
Both movies were fine horror films. But to me, this opening scene stands alone. It is an instant classic and could stand by itself as a perfect 10 minute movie. This is movie making distilled down into its finest elements.

I like when the movie starts as everyday normal life, but you start to feel the pressure, like something terrible gonna happen.
Sonic speed? Not at all, if you’ve seen them sprint they look no more faster than a wild predator
@@Daquan0394 Its just an expression lmao.
All I did was choose a strong word to specify that they are fast.
And I get what you're gonna say next "Yes but people may interpret this the wrong way."
Well that sounds like their problem.

@@Daquan0394 if only there were something immediately after that comment, in parentheses, that addressed this.
6:55 The point where the muted scene adds to the suspense...
The muted scene is a mark of the pov changes to Regean because she is deaf, right?
@@valhatan3907 Spot on.
They use it often in tense scenes to heighten it. Like in war combat scenes, the absence of a soundtrack to show temporary shell shock when a mortar/grenade explodes close by.

I have yet to see this. But the fact is I jump scared simply by Krazinski getting HONKED AT 😂 definitely need to watch this.
As someone who watched both, the stark contrast of the intro sequence, the ambient noise, car horns, dogs, it's completely putting me on edge every time I watch it, just all the things you wouldn't want in that world, and people who know are just put on edge as well, very clever
The “Shhhhh” sign means “be still” to deaf people. NOT A DIG. Deaf people are actually very loud. When they get shhhhh’d, it means “stop moving,” not “stop making noise.”
It means don't make a sound. Either with words or by moving your body. Be "Quiet"
