Born in Memphis, As a child, Hearns moved to Detroit and began boxing at age 10 at the King Solomon Gym. After his coach left, he moved to Emanuel Steward’s Kronk Gym. He compiled an impressive 155-8 amateur record and was named 1977’s Most Outstanding National Amateur Boxer.
He turned pro in 1977 and racked up 17 straight kayo victories. Wins over Bruce Finch, Harold Weston, Clyde Gray and Angel Espada led to a 1980 WBA welterweight title-winning bout against Pipino Cuevas (TKO 2). Following three defenses he met WBC champion Sugar Ray Leonard, in a 1981 unification bout and was stopped in 14 rounds of a classic battle. He rebounded to win the WBC light middleweight title with a 15-round decision over Wilfred Benitez in 1982. Three defenses, including a 2nd round TKO over Roberto Duran, came next. In 1985 he met Marvelous Marvin Hagler for the undisputed middleweight title. In one of boxing’s all-time action bouts, Hearns was stopped in three rounds. In 1987 he won his third division title by besting Dennis Andries (TKO 10) for the WBC light heavyweight strap. Later that year, Hearns made history, becoming the first man to win titles in four divisions by halting Juan Roldan (KO 4) to win the WBC middleweight belt. Hearns added yet another title to his collection, defeating James Kinchen (W 12) for the WBO super middleweight title in 1988. In 1991 he moved back to light heavy and beat Virgil Hill for the WBA belt (W 12). With a sharp left jab and vicious right hand, Hearns boxed until 2006 and registered a pro ledger of 61-5-1 (48 KOs).
7-time world champion, going all the way from welterweight to cruiserweight, fighting for nearly three decades.
Amassing an incredible amateur record of 155-8, Hearns won the National Amateur Union light-welterweight championship as well as the National Golden Gloves Championship at light-welterweight.
The legendary “Hitman” resides in Detroit and is a fixture on the Motor City’s sports scene.

This is very tough seeing this gentleman who gave so much for me, as a spectator, for other fans, and the general public.
Mr Hearns was a hell of a fighter. He feared no one, dodged no one and fought regular.
I am no one, though this gentleman will go down in history as one of the best. It's a difficult watch and to see him older now and taken punishment through his career for the benefit of others.
A fantastic athlete and gentleman who's sealed an enviable place in time. Thank you and love and best wishes to a gentleman of our time..

Definitely but he seems to be happy and he has a hell of a lot to be proud of. The word "legend" is thrown around too much but this man is a legit legend. A proud, talented, hard-working and driven man who carved out an incredible legacy and is still adored by the fans.

What he did to Andreis at LHW while he was still LMW Champ was FRIGHTENING.
As Hagler and Barkley about Hearns.......oh wait........
and Hearns was beat by Iran Barkley and Duran beat the brakes off Barkley. it all depended on which Duran showed up to the fight. that's not taking anything away from that KO of Duran that's one of the biggest shots ever landed in boxing history and really more of a testament to Duran because not only did he SURVIVE that he went on to fight for like another 20 years
Duran speech isn’t messed up either
He had excellent defense and a tremendous versatile and deep skill set

My all time favorite. A physical freak of nature in the Welterweight and Super Welterweight divisions. I was in the crowd when he beat Dennis Andries at Cobo Hall back in 1987. Drove an hour and a half to watch the epic Hagler fight on closed circuit. Thanks for the memories Tommy. You are a legend.
