I absolutely love port cask whisky - and Kilkerran as well😋 I only get to try the 15y port from Kilkerran as this - like you said - was gone very quickly. Surprisingly I have seen very negative reviews of this as well though. So I a happy to see you guys redeem it🙂
This is, far and away, the most enthusiastic review of this whisky I’ve seen. I understand the excitement around the brand, but I’ve heard this one is a mess.
I haven't sought out many other opinions on it, but that certainly seems to be the case. Obviously we loved it, but I think if you were looking for a remotely subtle or balanced whisky then this one could be a bit of a problem.
I've a bottle I've shared with a number of mates, who have all drunk and like a lot of kilkerran. It seems really polarising, which fits the online reviews I've seen. Some people get amazing jammy/forest/caramel notes and are in ecstasy on first try. Other people get old dishcloth/musty/mouldy jam notes so enjoy it way less. My bottle seems to have improved hugely with air. On first opening it was very hot and I didn't enjoy the notes. It is definitely improving to my palate every time I come back to it.
I was surprised to see a KK8 Sherry locally for 1O9 so I got it, but I was intrigued seeing a KK8 Port next to it for 149. Higher price, but got them both figuring I hadn’t seen a reasonably priced KK8 in years.
Top Shelf Whisky gave this a huge drubbing. In fact I've never seen them be so negatively impacted by a bottling. Maybe they had a bad bottle. Anyway as others have said its sounds very polarizing. Best port matured whisky I've had was a 11 year old Longrow Red from about 6 years ago
You should see the Garrison Bros review they did, then... 😂 As for this one, I have no idea. Haven't had it and don't want it. I agreed completely with Dustin about the first KK8 sherry (most people loved it, I thought it was an abomination and an insult to whisky) and I am pretty sure I'd feel the same way about this one for the same reasons, based on his take.
@@pharmacistsdoitoverthecoun5012 Yes, exactly. It was a symphony of recessive traits. Somehow both over-oaked and undermatured, in addition to the burnt and almost rancid sherry. And yet ~90% of the online whiskysphere went ga-ga over it and several channels named it their whisky of the year. Seems like this one is following a similar trajectory.
1-2 full bottles per year put you at a slight disadvantage, my friend. There are dozens of whisk(e)y offerings out there every year available and at reasonable prices. Perhaps even in the three digits if you count world spirits. Miniatures just don’t have that development in the bottle over time quality.
For only buying 1-2 full bottles/year and not having to get it on the 2ndary market, you did very well Dave!
Love all the whiskies from Kilkerran.
I saw it and purchased the Sherry Cask version from WG. Awesome stuff.
Whos WG ???

I have been lucky to get three bottles at a reasonable price. It is great but in all honesty, the 2022 Sherry is notch better I think.
Seems like a polarising bottle this one, glad you guys enjoyed it. Was too hard to get for me so missed out.

I hope I get the chance to taste this too, but good to know it is excellent. Cheers!
Gentlemen, let us call it what it is - a great whisky.
Just bought the Sherry cask strength for $94.00 before tax . After tax around $102

Has anyone had the chance to compare this one to my top favorite .....Kavalan Solist Port Cask matured ? That would be the true test!

@@jasoncoates1835 Agreed the first KK8 was awful. Burnt and 1 dimensional. Like saying Starbucks coffee tastes great.

I have a bottle of this open and all I get is damp dish cloth. Not a fan at all. Definitely a marmite whisky.
There definitely seems to be something up with some of these bottles. Absolutely no dish cloth on our end, but we've had multiple reports from others.
