    Getting into Yale University is no small feat. A very bright young woman who has overcome tremendous obstacles. She will make great contributions to this country.

      Yeah by promoting criminal activity that undermines our sovereignty from foreign invaders who refuse to follow our laws, rules and vetting system. There are thousands of hardened criminal illegals for every illegal that gets accepted to a ivy league school via affirmative action. Just remember, she stole an American child's spot at yale by breaking the rules. Crime pays if you're an illegal.

      ***** How is she a Snot? She has brains. Which is a skill that not alot of people have. And if you ask me She did earn that tuition. And God bless her that she gets to go to yale after that. Is truly amazing. ANYWHO I do feel sorry for you in a sense tho. Life isnt fair but no need to hate just because others are successful on what they do best.

      +James Morris I highly doubt that... but sure lets go along with it. So a shcool offers her free education just because is not from here. But wont offer you any cause you were born here? That doesnt make any sense. and your hard firm envidence for this statement?

    How can we not be proud of this young woman? We should welcome her with open arms into our big private club of American citizenship. She has earned it, more so than many who are just born into it. Let's not make her the scapegoat for anyone's insecurities. This country is great partly because of its immigrants. Just ask your grandparents and great grandparents.

      +Correia104 no BC that would make me a sore looser there are many scholarships out there to take a great person can succeed anywhere ! If you are mad BC she took an opportunity and made it her own an choose not to look beyond her illegal status you are a moron! Truth is many girls and people like her who live In the shadows of this country are more hungry to become someone and do something great for this country than many many ungrateful people that have been here for generations and are considered legal 100% BC they are white and have wealthy families!

      Barry, just because you apply to come into our country doesn't mean that you will be granted access or are entitled to it. Nor does it mean that if qualify for access to come here that you will be admitted immediately. Our country is not a global dumping ground where the world's impatient, impoverished or needy get to come and solve their problems. We allow or should allow immigrants in at our pleasure as needed and as we see fit. Ignoring our immigration laws and legal borders is not only disrespectful to our people, not only a slap in the face but also undermines our security and ability to control the direction of our society.
      Those who benefit from entering our nation illegally are more apt to commit crime because the have learned that crime pays.
      If you have any pride or dignity, then please leave our country immediately if you have entered illegally. You may return legally if you have met all of our requirements and completed the application process.

    • @pokeypoet
      @pokeypoet 8 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Well, Stephencarlsbad, I thank you for your reasonable response to my post. And, if there is an unofficial symbol of our country, it is the Statue of Liberty with these words of Emma Lazarus written in 1883 inscribed
      :"Give me your tired, your poor,
      Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
      The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
      Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
      I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
      This country is still a beacon for the people of the world. I believe that. I believe we need a better process to deal with our immigration problems, but also a fair and timely process. I don't agree with all of what you say, primarily because this girl came with her mother - she didn't have a choice. She was a child. She is not a criminal. She doesn't deserve deportation, harsh treatment of name-calling. I imagine that she will become a US citizen and an extraordinary one at that.

      I'd call that cowardly and weak. She also stole an american child's spot that deserved to go to yale and couldn't because of her.
      She got in because affirmative action because she's mexican and illegal. The only thing I'd call her is a serial abuser of our system and a criminal.

    all these people mad because she is successful.....her entire graduating class, had the option and ability to sit in that very spot she occupied. yet there she sits. can you say butthurt??? she can here, against all odd and hatred, and is ON TOP. so many American children with this opportunity, and it become hers through hard work and sacrifice. a beautiful MEXICANA valedictorian of her class. ofcoarse people are mad. they can't take know a MEXICAN AMERICAN sits on top and graciously so. YOU GO BONITA!!!!!

    • @catmani2
      @catmani2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Actually people aren't mad because she is successful. I am happy she worked hard and earned the spot where she is. What people are mad at is she has been given a benefit that she should not have gotten because she is in this country illegally. That scholarship should have gone to someone who is either a natural born citizen, or a legal immigrant who worked just as hard as she did, but she will take that away from them. (and there are plenty of people in this country who worked just as hard as she did, but are not getting a full scholarship to Yale, though they may have wanted one) Tell me, why should she receive preference above those who have followed the laws of this country. Why should her hard work be rewarded over someone else who worked just as, if not harder than her, while obeying the laws of this nation? There are hundreds of millions of people around the world who want to come here to make a better life for themselves and their families. Why should she get better treatment because her family managed to skip over the border?

    • @catmani2
      @catmani2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +Leo Velasco
      So you are saying that none of the thousands of other valedictorians in the US worked as hard as she did? Yale doesn't give a full ride scholarship to all valedictorians of all high schools. There are many who want to go there, but don't make it in, despite working just as hard as her. There are many more who get accepted but cannot go because they can't afford it. Are you saying she worked harder than all those people who are here legally?

    • @Billy420-69

      Because their is no such thing as affirmative action? Am I right.

    • @TheAsianRepublican
      @TheAsianRepublican 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +catmani2 In many articles, states her scholarship was based on financial aid. That does not mean she didn't earn it, but the administrators of Financial Aid use common sense, they know a household income of $25,000 benefits more from aid than $250,000 household income. Many of these scholarships are Financial Aid packages as higher income families do not qualify. As it should be, being a private institution.

    • @TheAsianRepublican
      @TheAsianRepublican 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +catmani2 Because Yale is a private institution that make their own rules on who qualifies for their scholarships. At this point, she can get a student Visa. Also it's unlikely she is undocumented she is likely on the DACA deferred deportation program where she renews every 2 yrs much like a Visa. Do you really think she would risk her future and scholarships to come out as "illegal"? Granted she is being used as a political pawn, she not undocumented.

Just like Whites Caucasian are not homogeneous, the Native Americans were not homogeneous. They were warring tribes in constant war. This really got to me. I was brought to the U.S. before I was even 2 years old. When Larissa spoke about her life with her abusive/alcoholic father and her mother I cried because that's exactly the life I had. I also was raised low-income and lived in fear for me and my family. Sadly, this is the reality for many of us dreamers and it seems like all those people putting us down choose to overlook this. I never told anyone at school about my status however, simply because I didn't want those stereotypes attached to me. And to those few I DID tell, they were shocked, they said they thought I was American. I am American though and it was all very confusing to me when I was younger but of course now I can be proud of it. It's so easy to feel down about my origins but seeing people like Larissa makes me feel less scared about trying my best. I am also very grateful towards my mother because I wouldn't be where I am if it weren't for her and I too, do everything for her. I see many of my peers dropping college and struggling with kids too early and I refuse to do the same, I refuse to "make mistakes" because I know I am not ready for that, I don't need any more problems and I know it'll just put more strain on my family. It's difficult, I know, and I've wanted to quit for the longest time but I look at my mom and I just can't repay her like that. My difficulties have made me extremely open minded and I love different cultures and I refrain from judging others because I know how it feels, if only everyone could think with a little more compassion, we'd have an easier time here.

That girl, in spite of her age and not having all the privileges and comforts that YOU had, is already a more accomplished and successful person than YOU. It is because of of people like her-- inteligent, hard working, committed, brave etcetera that this country became what it is--the most powerful nation on earth. YOU?? that's a lot of assumptions made about the hardships I've faced based on mostly incorrect and ignorant political views simply because its easy to repeat buzzwords.
      I like to judge a person by their actions, not their past or their upbringing. Not even color of skin or faith.
      Illegal immigration is by definition illegal. it causes the country a lot of problems dealing with people coming into the country and then living "undocumented" in it each year. over 100 billion dollars. She IS a criminal and there is no sugar-coating it. She knows her family disregarded the law to get and stay here.
      and yes, I was born here. My grandparents were not born here though and they did immigrate to the country. LEGALLY. You really have no respect for all those people who choose to obey the laws and understand the importance of following procedure. Everything you've just said applies to yourself.
      You're projecting because you lived a sheltered life and think everything in the world can be solved so easily. You probably also think the migrant crisis in Europe could go away if everyone just opened their borders and disregarded the fact that the "refugees" are choosing not to integrate into their host countries and instead, killing and harming citizens because it goes against THEIR faith. even if they weren't causing problems, the various countries cannot financially support these people. Now we have them AND the native citizens suffering. Good job, hero. In your efforts to make the world better, your naive thinking only caused MORE people to suffer than if you had done nothing. This is why people who share your childish views of the world need to shut the hell up and stop trying to think you know what's best. Statistics are not on your side and neither is reality.

      Just because you apply to come into our country doesn't mean that you will be granted access or are entitled to it.
You may return legally if you have met all of our requirements and completed the application process.

      what did he write that indicated any hatred or racism? by definition anyone who breaks the law is a criminal, that is the difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. pointing that out is not hatred or racism. The United States lets in 1.3 million legal immigrants every year, the country that is the largest beneficiary is Mexico with 180,000+ entrants. There will always be the last person in line who must wait, and after the last person there will be another 100's of millions of last people who have to wait. This is why there is a process and a long waiting period. Reality is reality. Next time you stand in line and wait long for something, try to understand the reason why the line is long.

      It has nothing to do with never understanding what Ms. Martinez went through. I don't mind her telling everybody that she is an "undocumented immigrant." I don't begrudge her getting a free ride to Yale. What really galls me is that she complains about living in the shadows of the United States. My response: Anybody who breaks the law and running from the authorities is living in the shadows of the United States. Ms. Martinez complains about people assuming that she is not intelligent because she is from Mexico. My response: Everybody has been insulted. I am sure that illegal immigrants insult Americans. She complains about how they are trying to do it right, but just don't know how. My response: Go back to your country of origin and migrate to the United States legally. Ms. Martinez claims that the wall is built on hate and prejudice. My response: The border wall serves the purpose of stopping people from crossing the border so they can stay in the US illegally. It is a tool to protect the sovereignty of the United States. There have been boundaries since the beginning of time. You just can't walk into anybody's house and start eating their food out of the refrigerator. That would be trespassing and theft. You don't allow little children to play in the street because it is dangerous. Boundaries exists for orderliness that is so necessary in civil society. Borders exists to keep people safe. Ms. Martines asks Americans to have more love in our hearts towards people like her because illegal immigrants are people too. My response is "Why is she being so one-sided?" It seems that Ms Martinez does not realize that she is not perfect either. Ms. Martinez needs to have more love in her heart because she has the audacity to pontificate her world view at what should be a celebration. She had 4 years to tell people what she thought. Yet she waits to the last time the student body will be together before everybody goes their separate ways. Anybody who disagrees with her won't have a chance to tell her their rebuttal. Why not rally the whole class together and say something inspiring for all. Instead she chooses to alienate part of the student body because of her selfishness.

    Man, there's so much hatred. Even if she is illegal, it doesn't matter, at one point, every person in America other than American Indians were illegal, they were people who killed and took land from others and called it their own to gain Benefits from new experiences. She did the exact same, well her family did. Her mother left a terrible life to give opportunity to her children. Such an opportunity was taken to Ty's full extent by this girl, she didn't steal money, she worked hard and will one day pay taxes, and repay America for they opportunity given to her as a immigrant wanting the American Dream. she defied the odds and made something out of herself. Many legal immigrants take they're documentation for granted, as in they don't believe that they should try to excel above others as much as she did, and such a similar ignorance comes from lucky individuals born with white privilege. She deserves what she was given, and doesn't deserve all the ignorance being thrown out at her.

Why should she benefit just because she lived in a place where they could easily get here? Either way, yes she's talented. Yes, she worked hard to be in that position in her school. But she's playing the political game of immigration instead of taking the opportunity to expose the real issues. Nobody is saying they aren't people. And it isn't hate to want a secure border any more than it is for Mexico to secure their southern border.... or any other nation to have border security. The issues are different and complex and principled. But she chose to go with the media's talking points all while hating on the media. And *that's* the problem -- falling for that divisive narrative.... you know, besides stealing tax dollars from her community to attend school.

    Ok. After reading the comments I can comprehend both sides of "Undocumented Immigrants". Some comments made me think about how corrupt the system is, as she calls it, "Broken". I admire her bravery and strength to come out in the open and tell us her story. I understand she's undocumented, but why be punished when all she wanted was to succeed in a country (USA) she was brought to. The thing Americans or ignorant slobs don't seem to get is; Her parents left Mexico for a better LIFE. You people really think her mom wanted to stay in a country where she couldn't make a future for her kids/daughter? Her mom knew what she was getting herself into, but risked it all because she knew her daughter would strive for the moon and stars. Yes, I do know that legal process is the way to go, but see, in her defense she was three with nothing but innocence and purity. I read one comment that really bothered me - it went like this, "If she's so smart, why not go back to her country and make it great?" This is where the ignorance really comes into play. If she went back to Mexico there's a high percentage that she'd be envied and probably killed because she made something out of her life in the States. Now, not every undocumented immigrant is like her. I do agree that there's a decent percentage of immigrants that do commit crime and other defenses and they do deserve to be deported because they're not contributing (benefiting) to the economy. She represents the typical 'stereotypes' of: lazy, only here for the benefits, and dropping out of school now gimme food-stamps. I want to address the fact that many of the comments have said "It's not fair she's here illegally, but my parents waited years for legal confirmation" "we" as a nation have suffered and it's not fair to discriminate just because there's no education about it rather than negativity and anti-support. Rationalize with me. Is Trump really making America "great" again? Was it even great at one point? Every opinion has its valid points and personal emotion. Now I'm gonna go back to eating my quesadilla, thanks.

    As a Trump supporter, this is a case where I think we should grant this lady citizenship. She has proven to be a productive citizen of this country. With that said, her story is not an accurate representation of illegal immigrants as a whole, and we shouldn't base national policy off of this one in a million case. Many illegals do commit a high rate of crimes and those illegals that are dangerous and take more than they give from our society should be deported. However, in any case where illegals are like this they should be granted citizenship.

    Ha, this young lady just said the university saw her speech and that they support her 100%. They even said the money that was wasted on an immigrant, wouldn't have gone to people who are legally born here anyway. It goes to not just legal Americans, but also to INTERNATIONAL students, regardless of their status. Plus, the reason this brave and smart lady left her country was to escape the abuse she suffered from her father. As someone who has lived through family violence I respect her even more for working hard towards a bright futute. And I wish her the best and all success in her pursuit to help people by studying nueroscience! Go change the world and make a difference in people's lives!

    No actually no, we are guilty too. We just want that USA citizens become aware of the situation in Latin America and that don't take for granted that we are just a bunch of lazy, illiterate or thief, as Clarissa stated we are humans too and Quoting a great American writer. Our school system has been decimated by the flood of illegal immigrants requiring dual language schools and resources taxpayers are forced to pay. The US school system is now 34th in the world after being a world leader thanks to the influx of illegal aliens who think they have to right to a free education. Mexico is not a 3rd world country nor are they at war. Make Mexico reallocate resources to provide for the education of their young people. We do not need to educate the Mexican population. The Vietnamese did not require or get dual language schools as they came into America. They learned the language in addition to regular school. Let the Latinos create the country they want at their own expense in their own country. Deport every illegal and the clots they have produced in this country.

    It's a shame that she had to be so divisive with her words. It's a high school graduation speech. Why not unite the class before everyone goes their own way. Instead she had to whine like a baby when she said "We are people too." Don't tell me that illegal immigrants don't make fun of kids born in the USA.

    Racism in America is nothing compared to Mexico racism. I was born in cali and my are illegal. I got older and went to Mexico to live for a while with my grandparents and experience school there. In school, kids called me gringo and told me to go back to my "free country", I got jumped multiple times cause I can't speak Spanish well and I can't really understand it. So now I'm use to it and I just want to see how a white person will survive in that environment lol

    There needs to be more people like this young lady, who's tired of living in fear and who wants to be the brave one to draw attention to the immigration topic. People can be hateful and say nevertheless shes an immigrant and even though thats true, what does it mean. Just because shes an immigrant she isnt intitled to a life in our great county. She has worked hard to get to this point unlike some of our young children who have their parents to fall back on. Her being accepted to Yale should be self explanatory, she not going for the college experience of winning beer pong, partying at frat parties like most of our American children, who make colleges a waste of mommy and daddys money. I hope my children grow up with her spirit and intentions. Everyone needs to stop judging and just salute her, our country supposed to be the best place for better opportunities. Also shame on whoever votes for trump, he will lead us to the gutters idk who would want an celebrity as PRESIDENT

      Think with your brain, not with your feelings. As the great Thomas Sowell said, "The problem isn't that Johnny can't read. The problem isn't even that Johnny can't think. The problem is that Johnny doesn't know what thinking is; he confuses it with feeling." When should laws not be followed? Why do laws exist, what good are laws when they are not enforced? What happens when society chooses which laws are laws when they feel like it? What does a country mean? What does citizenship mean?

      +Martin Brizuela I speak as an individual with my actions. I don't care to be labelled with a group. Identity politics is a sham, every group has its rich and poor, smart and dumb, saints and criminals. No need to force people into groups, better if you see each person as individuals. As if Asians are homogeneous, like Whites are all the same, the Italians and Jews and Irish and Pols. Identity Political is for people who want to to used as pawns for other peoples agendas.

How about you all stop crossing Africas boarders for diamonds how about you stop crossing the boarders to use china supplies how about you stop going to Columbia for your delicious star coffee. you go to these countries to supply your own country with goods while we pay anywhere from $.05 to $1.00 for labor to get products and this is something we are proud of. we go to war with countries 80% over problems that have nothing to do with us and in the mist our own soldiers die and we kill innocent ppl. trust me a valedictorian from a high school is the least of your problem try and focus on our poor education system that our government is always first to cut

    1. Martinez discussed “not letting any obstacles stop you.”While she says “obstacles,” what she really means is laws. However, laws should stop you. That’s the point of laws.2. She discussed “living in the shadow.”She doesn’t live in the shadows of anything. She goes to public school on the taxpayer’s dime, bumping American citizens out of scholarships. She’s standing in the spotlight, boasting about her crime.3. She tells us “undocumented immigrants are people too.”Yes, yes they are. Do you know why? All criminals are people. Animals don’t have laws. Therefore, any criminal is also a person.4. She claimed, “I owe it to all of you, to be honest.”However, she didn’t owe it to her classmates, American citizens, or anyone else to follow our laws.5. She told her peers, “We don’t have to let expectations become our reality.”Apparently, her definition of “expectations” is much like her definition of “obstacles” because once again, what she’s really referring to are laws.6. “I’m proof beating the system is possible,” she boasted.Well, that speaks for itself, but did she beat the system or cheat it? The answer is obvious.7. She tells us that illegal immigrants want to become Americans “the right way,” but “they don’t know how.”Apparently, her stroke of honesty didn’t last long. She previously admits that her application has been in process, so she knew how to do it legally, it just wasn’t going her way fast enough. Now, let’s apply her excuse to any other law or crime. Would that leave people applauding? Would it cause the law to look the other way?Many states make it incredibly hard, if not impossible, to obtain a concealed carry permit. If a person without a permit used that excuse - “I wanted to do it the right way, but didn’t know how” - all because the laws were too “complicated” or took too long, would the liberal left be applauding? Would the crime be ignored? No. That otherwise law-abiding citizen would be facing serious federal gun charges.8. “We don’t have to conform to the limitations others put on us,” she tells fellow graduates.Again, they’re called laws, and yes, you should conform to those limitations. Otherwise, you are a criminal and should have to face the consequences and punishment for your crime, not be applauded for it.9. “They told me I couldn’t, so I did,” she concluded. Yes, she did. She broke the law.What message is she sending to her peers, which, as very young adults, are very easily influenced? They should break laws if their intentions are pure. Who defines that? Who decides what’s just and what’s not? Isn’t it already defined by our laws? A country without borders and laws is not a country. It’s chaos. It’s anarchy, and it’s what she is encouraging.If a bank robber takes his loot and gives it to the poor, is his crime any less? What Martinez did is worse because, at this point, all she did was take. She took our tax money that should be used to school American children. She took a scholarship that an American citizen, trying to get into school but can’t afford it, could have used. She is taking a spot at the prestigious Yale University - a spot some American vied for and was denied to make room for this illegal immigrant.
