I have been umpiring for 33 years at ALL levels. I have trained 100's of fledgling officials. I have coached at all levels. As a coach and an umpire, I appreciate the following the most:
    1) Take a moment before making your call.
    2) Follow the ball/play.
    3) Focus on the current situation and expect different scenarios.
    4) Be in sync with your partner(s)
    5) Be objective no matter the circumstances.
    6) Always be in position. Find the best angle.
    7) Be confident in your call.
    8) Be assertive not arrogant.
    9) Be approachable.
    10) Be invisible

Good job on this video. Thank you very much. One thing I might add in your list of uniforms and gear , is what color socks to wear . Please wear black or dark gray or dark blue nothing looks less professional and to see you and Umpire with white socks that is a no-no and I see so many Umpire is doing it. It makes me crazy.

On a close force play, I was taught to watch the base to see if the runners foot or hand touched it before the ball goes in the glove. You can't watch both but you can hear the ball go into the glove. On a soft thrown ball, it's the same, relying on peripheral vision and basic judgment. This wasn't covered in this video.

One thing I find new umpires do is crowd the play on force outs. You need distance to be able to see this play. If you are back approx 18' on a force you can see everything, base, ball, offense and defense.

Biggest issue I see out there these days is home plate umpiring standing too far behind the catcher and/or not bending/squatting.

FIRST RULE Don't tell the ejected person he/she has 30 sec to leave,

When starting out as an official. Don't
    1. Yell foul when the batted ball hits the backstop or lands in the parking lot.
    2. Look at your ball/strike indicator too much.
    3. Pick up bats or helmets for any team.
    4. When game is over go out the losing side.
5 Talk B.S. with coachers during game.
    6. Fans in the stands yelling.
7 Talk to partner too much.

The one thing i dont like is where they want umpires to put our hands it leaves them exposed yes they teach you what to do to keep from taking to much damage like not making a fist but keeping it open and loose but still could be less injuries to umpires hands if they would do it the way i did it

@1:25 , I'm sorry, you're wrong.....so wrong. Yes, strike calls need to be heard, but do not, DO NOT SHOUT OUT on a ground ball out to first base. Just signal it and go back to A.

    • @timothyjames8855
      @timothyjames8855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I’m not sure what you heard but that is not what was said.
In reference to what was said it was about calling an out or safe at the base.

I listen to it one more time and we definitely reference out calls, safe calls.

I have always felt mechanics and voice should have a 3 speed transmission...for example: On a play at 1B where Mrs. Colaveto 4 blocks away knows it's an out, we signal out and say nothing. On a putout play at 1B that is within 3 steps, elevate the voice slightly, call the out whilst giving your out signal. On a wacker out at 1B, less than 1 step, you elevate your voice fully and give an emphatic out signal...something bigger than your gear 1 or gear 2 out signal.

This always seemed intuitive to me. Other guys I work with will make an emphatic gesture and yell, "SAFE!" (even pausing for a couple of seconds) on a pickoff attempt where the runner was obviously safe. Drives me nuts. It looks robotic and silly. It's almost like when the dugout yells "BACK!" at the runner and then the one joker yells it after the ball has already gone back to the pitcher. It's that delayed.

    Before the video plays.
Im gonna guess the biggest mistake a new umpire males is having an actual reason to eject someone and not just because their feelings got hurt.
