Sweden’s military readies fighter jets, submarines, naval fleet and troops ahead of joining NATO

- As Sweden prepares to join NATO, thereby ending 200 years of neutrality and military non-alignment, the military says it is ready for the "necessary" move.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom travelled to Washington on Wednesday (March 6) where they are expected to complete the process of joining NATO.
Sweden will immediately become NATO's 32nd member when it deposits the formal documentation.
"I feel good. It's been a long journey, of course, and it's a political decision that we in the armed forces in the Swedish Navy really stand by, and unfortunately it's a necessary move, a big move in Swedish national policy, but for sure it's about the security environment in our part of Europe," said the Commander of Sweden's Fourth Naval Flotilla, Anders Backstrom, speaking at the Berga Naval Base near Stockholm.

94 JAS-39 Gripen C/D fighter jets (Set to become about 120-150 in the 2030s with 70 new E variants on order)
25k active soldiers, 30k reservists and 20k home guard members (also set to expand greatly in the coming decade due to new conscription laws drafting significantly more young people and increasing interest to volunteer in the home guard)
A defense budget that exceeded 2% of GDP this year, and set to reach 3% of GDP by the 2030s
The second highest level of defense morale amongst the population in the EU (Behind only Finland)
5 of arguably the best submarines in the world (only ones in history able to sink a US aircraft carrier in war games), 7 corvettes of many are stealth ships and about 200 patrol vessels.
120 tanks, 500 IFVs and lots of artillery
One of Europes largest and most modern defense industries punching well above its weight
Full access to the Baltic Sea and a complete blockade of Russia in the region - as well as new strategic abilities to defend the Baltic states, Finland and the Arctic
And as of today. We are the first land to get nuked. Not a good trade.

I saw Swedish troops in a cafe in Richmond in North Yorkshire, last year. They had their camo uniforms on, and were happily tucking into the food on offer in the cafe. I imagine they were based at Catterick during a training exercise of some sort..... Sweden is not a nation you would want to be at war with.... NATO is stronger still, with Sweden and Finland as part of it...

We have dismantled pretty much our whole defence (before feb 2022) and even the swedish military confessed we could not last even a week…Since then not much have happened and we would need to spend 3-4% already now and not a measle 2% (which includes pensions and stuff like that)
That we now-more than 2 years in to this awful rape of another peaceful country-have not even managed to put in “overdrive” when it comes to production and ramping up our defence is no less than shameful

Thanks everyone! It has been two long years for many Swedes who follows all the horrors in Ukraine while at the same time there has been nagging the NATO process everywhere....like a rollercoaster. Great that we have finally joined the alliance with the obligations and assets that it entails.
