I have a 3306C in my 1992 Ford LT9000 with 55,000 original miles on it. It might be a little underpowered for the 92,000 gross, but I kinda baby it and am never in a hurry anyway. I love it. I feel like the 3306's are the underdog of Cat engines...they were used in so many different applications and like you mentioned, held up very well. There are lots of construction and farm equipment still running 3306's today, especially tractors and dozers.

I once worked on a D6R tractor, which had this engine, it had electronic control in the transmission, but the engine was mechanic.
I started after 2 years of being stopped, the most impressive thing was that it did't have the injector tubes, and in fact the pump and inyector connections were rusty, I really did not think it would turn on. It started at the first try, and sounded like new, it was impressive!
Really I think the best engine with which I hace work!!

Love the videos. Just thought I would let you know, CAT still makes the 3306B, and 3406C, just not in your neck of the woods. The 3306 is still built brand new today, and installed in two pieces of equipment (R1300G, and D6GC). The R1300G (NJB prefix) underground loader has been built since 2012 and uses the 3306B. In September of 2020 CAT just started building the D6GC (XPC prefix) which also has the 3306B. The 3406C is also still built brand new today, its used in the D8R (MEJ & RJM prefix depending if its built in Thailand or Brazil) . Check them out, very popular engines.

One thing I experienced with them is when they started blowing head gaskets, they had low liners they had to be brought back to height by shims or redeking the block. WIX filters are fine IF *IF* (< See That Word) you maintain your equipment properly... Those filters collapsing were likely caused by a stuck Oil Pump pressure release or a clogged filter...LACK OF MAINT! - I have used WIX for 3 Decades and Millions of Miles....Never Had a Problem...
The argument that the Engine Manufacturer "Designed" the filter to work with X engine... That "Might" be an argument with CAT because they are ANAL Control freaks about everything... But I know every other Manufacturer out there...Has a filter made "To their specs" by whichever company is cheapest that month... I have seen GM/Ford and Toyota, and just about EVERY Automotive/Medium Duty brand, filters of the same "Part Number" change "Style" and even the case box is indicating it's coming from a different supplier...

On that filter color. In the late 70's and 80's I was engineer for or skippered 14 Alaska crab boats and trawlers which were all CAT powered, each had at least two 3306's for gensets, a couple had a 3rd for hydraulics only. I ordered all my filters by the case through NC Machinery (Seattle) and with the exception of a small black CAT logo, all the canister filters (fuel & oil) were bright white. The only issue we ever had with any of the dozens of 3306's over the years was that damned Jabsco impeller on the raw water pump. Hours ranged from 7k to over 30k with no major work.

Being older than Mr. Ape I watched the evolution of the 3300 series during my years working on them for my friendly neighborhood Cat dealer.
Beautiful in their simplicity and reliability. Power to weight ratio not great which didn't matter in a dozer or loader where you needed weight to keep the blade or back end down but not great in a truck.
They evolved from the D330 and D333 engines which were very similar except the head and block were a little different and the D330/3 stroke shorter if I remember correctly.
Cat must have built millions of 3300 series engines, they were in everything.
There were upgrades depending on application and experience.
Depending on the power rating the pistons may or may not have had the steel "Fire Plug" in the hollow of the piston where the fuel was sprayed.
There were also variations in the steel inserts in the ring lands. depending on power rating.
The block evolved from a counterbore to a flat deck with spacer plate. Just cheaper to machine flat surfaces than counterbores. The head gaskets are different to accommodate lubing the rocker shaft
The spacer plate had some issues and was updated.
The head and fuel system evolved. It started out with what was called the "compact system" which was a pump that looked like a small engine, convoluted on the sides with injection pipes sticking up which connected to the capsule nozzles in the precombustion chambers [precups]. Precups were screwed into the head. Precups had glow plugs screwed into them, best -40 starting system ever. The head itself is flat except the valves and maybe some precup protrusion. The precups had different gasket/spacer/washer thicknesses to to allow the glow plug to be located more or less to the valve cover so the glow plug harness could reach.
Next came the "Sleeve Metering" fuel system, hard to explain how it works in words. Rather than a helix on the plunger it uses drilled holes in the plunger and a sleeve around the plunger that was moved up or down to close the dump port and control fuel injected. It is identified by being rather small with a flat cover plate which accessed the innards. It didn't tolerate fuel contamination well.
Somewhere along here the precup system was kind of abandoned and an adapter that replaced the precup was introduced that fitted a pencil nozzle, no glow plugs.
Later heads had no precups, or adapters, only a drilled hole for the pencil nozzle.
The last incarnations had a fuel system known as the "New Compact System". Kinda looks like sleeve metering but bigger with a large cover.
The engine bearings were updated for environmental reasons. They used nickel or copper to bond the aluminum bearing material to the steel back. I don't remember which one came first but it got punted for environmental reasons and we were sent notice that the new bearing life wasn't as long as the old ones and should be replaced earlier.
The wet aftercooler was the last gasp for the 3300 series. Trying to get more power from a reliable old steed they gave it colder, denser air.
I suspect the demise of the 3300 series was there was no easy way to make it meet upcoming emission standards.
Plus Cat bought Perkins which gave them all the engine technology they lacked in the emission arena and if you study you will find the smaller modern Cat engines are Perkins painted yellow.
The purchase of Perkins also gave then access to British Military contracts, tank engines and such.
Main problems [besides poor maintenance] : Yes they did drop valves at high hours. Valves were improved over time. Sometime an injector slobbered and melted a piston.
In 1980 to get 10,000 hours out of an engine working hard was darn good. The 3300 series would run 10,000 hours without the head being pulled, and more.

Believe it or not, England is the largest manufacturing base for CAT outside the US. Hey great video. But the 3306 was installed in equipment until the early 2000 ( 330B excavator for example and 966G wheelloaders ). And a common problem I know on of highway equipment with mostly changing engine speeds like wheelloaders for example the rubber verules on the head gasket worked there way into the head an block surface. So that they don't seal anymore and the head and the block both had to be machined. But that happened at high mileage 10000 hours plus.

We had the PC & the DI. The PC consumed 45 liters and delivered 193HP 24/7full throttle whereas the DI used only 38 liters full throttle and produced 235 hp. Only problem by changing from PC to DI, we had to change the oil brand.. With Castrol, the DI engine consumed oil. the other brand stopped the oil consumption.

CAT makes some great engines and I feel they're very underrated in that regard unless you've owned one. As said, the 3306 and 3304 are some of the best. I have an old 1962 977h crawler loader on the farm for the last 40 years of it's life and the 333D engine that came before the 3306. It has over 19450 hours with no rebulid.....the hour meter died about 10 years ago....should fix that. That machine's done everything from hauling manure, to plowing huge 5 foot + snow drifts to knocking down trees. Love these CAT videos, keep them coming! Gave me a good laugh with the filter....should date stamp it too! haha

Worked on 3304 in the 941b, 3304 turbocharged in the 951c, and 3306 in the 955 and D6. 3304 had a counter balance shaft would break if an idiot was running the loader hard, they could be a real pain to get out. You are correct about dropping valves I worked on Numerous dropped valves issue, sometimes cracked heads, always changed the power pack in the affected cylinder. Found out it was cheaper than the downtime and parts

Had a D6R come in last year, was ran out or low on water to a point the exhaust had turned white, and the paint on the head and side of block turned red. Still ran pretty well but was smoking a decent amount. 3 pistons galled pretty bad other 3 were honed and re-ringed and 3 new packs new main and rod bearings and a reseal and away she went.. At the customers request of course... 3306

The D343 is also a great engine. It is bigger but it's pretty bullet proof. Worked on a dredge once (many moons ago) the company had the rack turned up so much the exhaust would glow red about a foot past the turbo. It ran 20 hours a day 6 days a week for years. The only reason it stopped running was because the company bought a new dredge. The most incredible work horse of an engine I've ever seen from Cat.

Those engines are the Holden red motor which powered Australia cars for 40 years, super reliable dead easy to fix and what I did my time on 40 years ago. I converted a 3304 DI to a 3304 PC in 1987 to meet emissions in 1987 in the underground eviroment. A lot to be said for PC engines as far as emission go, my 2 cents worth

I had a EL240B cat excavator and it had a 3116 engine. The only problem I ever had with the engine was fuel in the cooling system and it ended up needing a new head. Cat service did it on the side of the highway where working.

I also had an EL240B Excavator and it also had a head issue - cracks I think - but a ‘dressed’ replacement head from Cat was only NZ$1300 (cheap for here in New Zealand) meant I was back Logging in no time. I also had a 325A with the same engine and it too needed another head. I think the heads must be weak on them. Otherwise they are a great engine.

3306 powered the 235 excavators, generators, pumps, crushers and everything else you can think of. 3 of them in use at a crushing operation I do work for, had one that was 90% worn out and still ran everyday, when we tore it down it had multiple broken valve springs, liners were scored, it was bad, but it still worked everyday.

Funny story concerning 3304PC engines in 120G graders. One operator was always unable to start the machine during cold weather, and he maintained he always used the glow plugs. Finally, I accompanied him out to the rig one very cold day only discover he never turned on the master ground switch prior to utilizing the glow plugs. OK - problem solved. His machine was upgraded to a 3304DITA, but he faithfully continued to utilize the glow plug switch (after turning on the master switch of course) on an engine which did not have glow plugs!!

    I guess because we work on a lot of equipment engines I rebuild a lot of the 3306 and 3304 engines . I just finished a 3204 and presently a 3046 . A 3046 is actually a Mitsubishi S6S . They are frequently used in D3 dozers and 963 Loaders .
What's strange is Ford put the 3406B and the 3306DI in their 9000 series trucks .
Rebuilt a pair of the 3208 engines out of a boat a couple of years ago .

@@nathansihlis4866 Fuel gas quality is always an issue for sure, having a knowledgeable mechanic set them up to run properly with the fuel gas on site is key. Engine oil also plays into having bad valve issues. We had to quit using a Conoco oil because it caused nothing but problems. The Esso GLX and GMA 40 oils were more expensive, but the maintenance bills are much lower than when we used the cheaper Conoco oil.

@@tombryant4518 yes for sure. Those points are vital to longevity. It was Esso or Chevron oil on almost every unit we serviced as I remember. I remember changing many many heads on those small Cats. We were always sent with a head and gasket kit when we did a service on those units. The Waukesha F11, 18, H24 were somewhat better.

I would love a video on liners! I was curious when or who started using liners. I didn’t have much luck finding information on liners. I just had a IH 1066 tractor with the DT 414 majored. It was liner type engine that was built in 1975. I heard IH had a lot of problems with pitted liners and started outfitting them with coolant filters that had a treatment pill in them that would treat the coolant.
My engine was way past receiving an in-frame and was an out of frame major OH.
