Thank you, Vanessa, for raising the important issue of leasehold and freehold properties. All of the content creators I’ve watched, don’t even discuss this subject. Instead they romanticise the property market while overlooking key aspects like service charges and the implications of lease renewals. It would be fascinating to explore the cost of renewing a lease, especially since 60 years feels shockingly short. Personally, I find the idea of leasehold properties unappealing. I’m not sure if it’s a remnant of colonialism or rooted in tradition, but either way, it’s an aspect of property ownership I strongly dislike.
@@tiffanyboney Freehold means you own the property and the land outright. Leasehold, on the other hand, is the opposite. While you may have bought or built your million-dollar house, the land, the building, or sometimes both, are leased. At the end of the 60-year contract, you’ll need to pay a fee to renew the lease. Furthermore, if you’re dealing with an organization or an unscrupulous landlord, they can charge any amount they want. If you can’t afford it, you could lose everything, no matter how much money you’ve invested in the bricks and mortar. For some properties, like certain flats, leasehold arrangements can make sense, but it ultimately means you don’t truly own anything outright.

@ thank you for that explanation. That sounds similar to taxes paid on property in the USA. We never truly own it because we must pay taxes. You don’t pay your taxes then someone else can pay your taxes and penalties on your property and now become the owner. It would be nice to fully own something and not have to pay someone for land or property.
The freehold system largely a reaction TO colonialism. Foreigners can't take over the land again, at least not permanently. If you have enough money you can buy your way into most countries, but with a leasehold, the land still technically belongs to the country. Right now, key tracts of premium agricultural and coastal land are being gobbled up by foreigners with vastly more spending power than the local population who struggle to compete. So the system technically prevents local people losing access to their ancestral lands forever which can happen in smaller nations in desirable locations- Jamaica, Sri Lanka and Hawaii for instance. Lease renewal happens all the time.

I think many people have not yet understood what is generally going on in Africa at the moment. It's getting more expensive instead of cheaper. If you can, buy land in Ghana now.
How are you selling something that is being leased? Isn’t “selling” the transfer of ownership? So how is it being leased with option to renew but it’s being sold? I am confused. Misnomer?
