    What are your views about bike standards past and present?

    • @tim__sadler
      @tim__sadler 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can hear the late great Michael Bonney in my ear #ride4mb - Standards are extremely important in any industry - they allow for growth through ongoing support for past, present and future designs.

    • @feedbackzaloop
      @feedbackzaloop 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In no industry there are universal standards. Those are suggestions for the baseline. Thing with bikes though, how little to none paperwork from regulatory bodies and consent from consumers is needed to discard them...
      But on a more related note, there is no standard bike rider. So the componentry should match this variance

    • @jptherockj2164
      @jptherockj2164 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think some of the new standards are great because they eliminate having several different standards. Look at what Sram did in the last year. All of the sudden every bike can be bought with UDH. How long have we been waiting for that? If you're not thinking outside the box, you never get faster! Once you find something that works then you have to release it to see what the people think.

      Acoustics are to do with sound and nothing to do with bikes, hence why an acoustic guitar makes sense but acoustic bikes are just stupid, it’s just a bike 😂.

      I am weird in that I like to find what parts I like and then run them on all my bikes, buuuuuut I also like color matching my builds. This leads to a few issues when not every body makes all the sizes of all the things.

    Can you imagine how much money bike and bike parts companies could save if there were ONLY 31.6 seatposts and 73 BSA thread in Bottom Brackets.

    • @jmo2752
      @jmo2752 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be fair, those pretty much are the 'standards' these days... the only thing I'd add that with dropper posts, actually having a fatter seat tube (ie. Specialized's 34.9) makes sense so you can have a correspondingly larger diameter stanchion for less flex.

    • @feedbackzaloop
      @feedbackzaloop 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They hardly would: those are mass produced parts so the tooling is present in multiple numbers anyway. Doesn't matter if you have x 31,6 tubes and y 34,9 or x+y of any of these two.
      However without the different standards some companies would simply not operate at all, as them making niche products for niche purposes - not being able to make money is quite the opposite of saving money.

    I hate when manufacturers put weird or outdated standards to save money. Like here is a good idea: let's pair a 1x12 Shimano derailleur and an HG hub so the customer is limited to 2-3 models of cassette or has to change the hub. Also I hate having to do a week long research everytime I want to upgrade something to make sure I buy the correct standard.

    • @dylan-5287
      @dylan-5287 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ironically an hg freehub has way more options than an xd or ms freehub. Those ladder two limit you to only a few choice from their perspective brands. But freehub bodies are cheap to replace luckily.

    • @DirtlovR
      @DirtlovR 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dylan-5287 More options? So far I've found Sunrace, which I already have on my bike, SRAM SX/NX and Garbaruk which cassettes cost 1/2 of a price of entire XT groupset. When you have MS you can put anything from Shimano (Deore, SLX, XT, XTR) and basically any brand that makes 12s cassettes because they make them in MS. Same with SRAM's XD.
      Another thing is usually you can't simply replace HG freehub body with MS and call it a day. In my case I'd have to get a new hub. That means basically disassembling the wheel, new spokes and nipples to fit new hub or simply a new wheel.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Options might be limited, but But good options for HG are Garbaruk 11-50T 11 Speed HG, or cheap option Shimano M5100 which is about twice as heavy, uses plastic spacers. I've not tried Microspline yet.

    • @DirtlovR
      @DirtlovR 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mtbboy1993 My friend, Garbaruk is so expensive I can have my wheel redone with new microspline hub and new spokes for that price or get a whole new wheel. Shimano M5100 is a 11 speed casette. Shimano's cheapest 12s casette is M6100 and it's microspline.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      SunRace has HG cassettes in 12 speed, but I've had bad experience with their 11 speed, so seems like Shimano m5100 11 speed or going to 12 speed Microspline are only options, but you are right, it comes with additional cost of the freehub if not already on the bike. Have you tried Microspline? I've not yet.@@DirtlovR

    Standards!?!?
    Clipless pedals are literally defined by having “clips.” If that’s not weird enough, nothing on a 29” wheel measures 29” We literally measure wheels by tire size. The list of silliness is nearly endless.
    Combining metric and imperial measurements in a single specification is the crowning glory of our industry non-standard standards.

      True, although it has created the irritating scenario where brands are now able to spec a more desirable 12 speed Deore or SLX groupset, then pair it with a cheaper HG cassette.
      So when the cassette inevitably wears out, you're forced to upgrade your freehub (possibly even the whole wheel, depending on the hub) if you want a genuine Shimano 12 speed cassette.

    Excellent discussion. We need to hear more people giving feedback to bike manufacturers and component manufacturers.
    As a person who spent his early career as an engineer, followed by 40+ years in information technology, I grew up believing religiously in standards. I even participated in a few standards design committees.
    As I became more involved with mountain biking, and learning to maintain my family’s bikes, divergence away from standards has regularly broken my heart and made me cry 😢.
    However, towards the end of my IT career I participated in a standards forum where a fellow speaker made a very good point. It was that diverging away from the long accepted standard is how new innovations occur. Without diverging, creativity gets stifled until there is an inevitable breakthrough. This repeated cycle of coming together to agree on a standard, then diverging away from the standard is necessary for continuous improvement. It is progress.
    Yeah, I know it also allowed Shimano and Suntour and Campagnolo and Sram to make a LOT of money by forcing us all to change out perfectly good components we had for newer technology. And that sucks 👎🏾

From Merriam Webster: "Something set up and established by authority as a rule for the measure of quantity, weight, extent, value, or quality" (e.g. there's published measurements and tolerances to be met in manufacturing of said part) is completely different than the common usage of "widely adopted", in the same way that a scientific theory is a well researched body of work with ample evidence and not just some guess.

      You’re done. It’s fixed.
      Except perhaps if you used a CO2 cartridge to re-inflate your tyres…
      Letting the CO2 out and pumping up again with fresh air can prevent some corrosion.

      Such tubeless plugs are even used for car tires sometimes. Normally it's a emergency repair there and you have to repair that properly with a plug put in from the inside, however some still use it there for permanent use

    #askgmbntech speaking of standards, I need help mixing and matching steerer and head tubes.
    I have a set of RS Totems with a 1.5in straight steerer and would like to fit them into a frame with a tapered head tube.
    The Nukeproof Warhead 44eeos headset would work for this, however I can’t find one for sale and they stopped making them.
    Is there anything similar? Can I buy an EC44 external cup and run it in the top?

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Boutique brands like Starling Cycle typically run a tapered fork in a straight 1.125 inch steerer tube by using an internal headset bearing on top and an external 1,5 cup bearing on the bottom. So it should be feasible to run an external cup on top.

      That could be one of the reasons, but we think the real reason is experimentation! You don't know if something works better until you try it 🤘Without standard changes we'd still be riding rigid MTBs with thin wheels 🤙

    Mountain bike standards aren't that bad. They are just what some radon person no one has heard of. Deciding when next weeks standard is. As for seat posts. At least Anna only had to deal with a round seat post that was too bad. Pleae don't get me started about aero road seat posts. Anna's thing about Ford and VW parts been different made me laugh. Thinking of the VW Caddy van and the Ford Transit Connect van. The Ford Transit Connect makes me think of a VW Caddy van that decidedwork done by a blind "platic surgeon". Then has been crashed.

    Re: "Acoustic" vs "Electric" bikes.
    Language serves to aid in communication. If EVERYONE understands that saying "mountain bike" means "not an electric mountain bike" then we're in good shape to not add a distinction like "acoustic" to it. BUT people ARE using "mountain bike" to describe both electric mtbs and motorless mountain bikes...so we need to make a distinction.
    Call it whatever you want. Hell, call it a "real" mountain bike if you want to continually wind up your friends and potentially hurt some feelings. "Traditional" sounds too old to refer to the latest Pivot, last year's Forbidden Druid, etc.. "Normal" sounds underwhelming.
    Language is to be played with and is an expressive tool. Have fun with it. My friends are going to get more laps on their battery-powered bikes but I'm going to feel a little more accomplished when I set a PR on my protein-powered bike. I try to keep my life simple and I'm forgetful, so I'm not interested in their plug-in peddlers. I'm happy with my hummus hucker.
