In the words of Frank Sinatra: "She will have a mystic survival. She was the greatest. The rest of us will be forgotten - never Judy." I agree 200 pct. A musical genius and beyond, I might add.. A gift sent from above to spread a little love among Us. She remains an original and unsurpassed in my opinion.
These shows were as "real" as it gets. My father was the arranger, composer, and conductor for these shows as well as the Carnegie Hall concert. My mother was Judy's stand in for rehearsing the orchestra. As big a star as Judy was, I still recall how down to earth she was with people. Backstage she would babysit me, and even took the time to teach me how to speak french.
Trevor thanks for sharing your experience with two tremendous talents, your father did wonders showcasing what I have always considered the greatest singer ever, you must have stories about being on the set of the brilliant "The Judy Garland Show" where much of the finest singing ever is contained within those incredible shows, love the concert episodes and what a great arrangement Mort did here, nobody ever came close to their "Come Rain Or Come Shine"!
Just imagine if the Carnegie Hall concert was recorded full-out on videotape like this. And this arrangement of "Come Rain.." is, at the very least, ambitious: a much faster tempo, aggressive brass and bongos, etc. And Judy doesn't just rise to the occasion, she attacks. By the 3rd minute of the song she's in full bloom: using the arms, stabbing the air for emphasis on certain notes, and on the last "shiiiiine," she surprises even herself. A stunning performance.
There are some terrific talents out there - past & present. But Judy stands alone. This is one take, no gimmicks, in front of a live audience - on television. She breezes through a very complicated arrangement & equals the miracle she created at Carnegie Hall. Judy & her ilk are the reason I am not impressed with so many super-stars who take forever to film a video of one song & years to release a single album. We were lucky to have Judy Garland - & her like.
Just look at the shear determination in her face at 3:05 She was channeling something deep, very deep to be able to finish the song as she did. I absolutely love the look of shock in her face as she says "oh my goodness" as if she were watching it, in awe, along with us. Never has there been anyone better and there never will.
What I love about Judy as a singer is that she was very much aware of her vocal power, but she never overused it. She was a true artist and storyteller, never a show-off.
She was a good actress as well, and that certainly helped. She knew how to perform and sell a song like no one before or since. And those arrangements were just out of this world. I've never heard this song arranged in this way before. The tempo was way faster than how it is commonly performed.
She's so in command, and at home there. And her camera technique is phenomenal. Plus, she's so open to her surroundings, and so completely present, that as a viewer I get that thrilling feeling that anything could happen up there.
Joe Hartman ... Yep. It’s called “charisma” or ... “It”. But you’re correct completely about her technique, of course. (And not everyone can even make a camera love them 😄). She knew how her body and gestures worked toward both camera (MGM training) and the general eye of an audience-think of how many solo singers perform big shows with BIG crowds and are able to “reach” an entire audience. In my lifetime, only Tina Turner could do it, on a stage with no “dancers” or effects. Make you feel she was sweating *just* for you. In Garland’s day, she could play to crowds of 15,000-20,000 and leave that same huge impression on an audience regularly. It’s why people paid to see her. Strange wonder, huh?
An immortal performance by an immortal artist. She totally nails it - with ease. And, yes. she was even better at Carnegie Hall (listen to the album & this song.) Best arrangement. I'm glad I saw her live as much as I did (when I was young.) The greatest.
I saw Judy in S.F.'s Civic Auditorium when she went on tour right after Carnegie Hall...and yes, she was absolute magic on stage. I'm 77 now, have seen many great performers, but Judy's concert was the most exciting thing I have ever seen. I can still remember it...total and complete magic.
Bob ... What an amazing night that must have been. She was in superlative form that year, judging from the Carnegie Hall record, entertainment history, AND personal anecdotes like yours. Thanks for sharing. The crowd must have been on its feet for the whole show. Lucky guy!
This is a person, an artist, being a genius. Painful, difficult to watch, brilliant, far ahead of her time, enjoyable, inexplicable, jarring, beautiful. None of it makes sense, but all of it makes sense.
Absolutely extraordinary. I've been a singer all my life-church choirs, etc. Judy's artistry with a song is never better demonstrated than in this piece. The rhythm, the modulations-jaw dropping!
I had heard this song with June Allyson when she was a guest star precisely on the Judy Garland Show, she sounded cute. Oohh, but with Judy it's a totally different experience!! Thank you.. Fantastic Judy 💞.. 💜🌿
EPIC. Yes, that word comes to mind. Nothing like this, or her, today. Staggering talent, the likes of which we'll never see again. This is so visceral it just about sets me on fire! WHOA!!!!!
she is 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 still one of the greatest singers of all time 🍾🧰🥤🍫🫕🛗🌷🌺🧵💂📅🚍🚍🃏🖍️🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🏡🏡🏡🏡🎇🎇🎇🎇 🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇what a great singer 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 she is a star ⭐⭐🌟⭐⭐✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
This was someone who was 100% on top of her game...and then for this song notched it up to 300%.....I really don't think she thought she would be this good. She nailed that last note....one of those rare occurences where you're already "that good," but your voice just catches that wave and rides to a crescendo that staggers....
I don't even know how many times I've watched this, but THANK YOU for posting it. This song is just so inspiring and just... wonderful. It captures every aspect of Judy's singing so perfectly. So again, thank you!
Amazing to watch the mechanics of how she produces every note and word. Not one note is just stand up and sing because you've got a great, god-giver voice. There's a life-time of vocal training by the very best that has become so ingrained she doesn't have to consciously think about it; it's just there. Watch her mouth and even her head.
What a voice! Thunder expresses it beautifully. Reverberating into the cosmos. R.I.P. Judy. I would have loved to see one of these concerts. Before my time unfortunately.
NOBODY can sing like this woman ! I read that Johnny Mercer composed the lyrics to this song thinking of Judy Garland and that he was obsessed with her. This version is even better than Carnegie Hall in my opinion, particularly the last 8 bars of this song....absolutely spellbinding !
All these old clips remind me of the day when several nights a week on various networks there were LIVE variety shows. No lip-syncing, just the good stuff. Dennis
Most stunning and entertaining version of this song! I've spent the last 30 min or so looking at/ listening to the other artists on TH-cam. While they're still great, this tiny little lady with a voice out of this world, once again went over and beyond. The ending.....100% FABULOUS! ! ! ! ! ** really really hope the Carnegie Doc. makes it to theaters next year**
Oh this is just the best of anything you'll ever hear or see. Madonna could only dream of her career if it weren't for Judy. And Gaga owes some thanks. Seriously, this level of talent is off the charts. I'm almost 50 years old and I come back to Judy all of the time for that punch, that dose of reality. I'm not interested in the kids these days. I'm still listening to Stevie Wonder and Led Zeppelin and Genesis. Let's love each other.
She knows this song very well, and can use the template she has worked out before to improvise upon. The major difference throughout the 60s is the diminishing of her air supply (damn those cigarettes) which she substitutes for with a controlled phrasing ideal for the intimacy of TV -- and then the "Irish witch" as she often called herself, comes to the fore and she somehow simply summons up a voice from years before---listen to the Metropolitan opera tapes, only 4 years before, but a surprisingly "young" voice, and amazingly, the tribute to Harold Arlen in 1968, a time when she was talking songs in her concerts, but for him she pulls out a voice of massive range and power.
Thank you .. Even in 2-D I feel the soundwaves and energy from the thunder... Imagining Carnegie Hall is similar to imagining thunder from having seen it on TV. It must have been all the heavens in the motion... We might not have the equipment yet to measure such vibratiions and energy charged phenomenons but it must be in the same leaque as Niagra Falls Any first hand witnesses here?
“You’re my Lady Bunny.”
Judy is the foundation that most singers are built upon but NO ONE CAN OR WILL SURPASS HER. EVER !
I agree! Judy has a thumb print on the great Barbara Streisand. Honestly, I’m much more impressed with Judy’s singing!
One of the fabulous "belters". That massive voice, from such a small frame....intensity!
You should have seen/heard Edith Piaf as well. An extra thrill when a voice like this comes out of someone barely five feet tall.
The way she bends that last note at full belt - it’s so Judy! Can’t imagine how difficult that is.
In the words of Frank Sinatra:
"She will have a mystic survival. She was the greatest. The rest of us will be forgotten - never Judy."
I agree 200 pct. A musical genius and beyond, I might add.. A gift sent from above to spread a little love among Us.

you are unbelievably lucky! what a woman she was xxx
I am a big Mort Lindsey fan. He was terrific, loved his arrangements for Judy.

Your father was brilliant and you can tell how much Judy respected him! You’re blessed to have experienced such great memories

O love itt
Too fantastic for words. Have loved this lady for over 50 plus years!!!!
When she pointed and sang “I’m with you baby” she was looking at Liza who was a guest star that week. Fantastic!!

They had professional chemistry and knew their art.

She says 'Oh my goodness'. She's in shock with herself.
david kirkman I also realized that and I LOVE IT!
She sang it even better than Carnegie Hall, especially that last phrase. So she should be damn pleased with herself!!
I think she surprised herself!!
I legit didn’t know this song existed until yesterday. Thanks Naomi and Monet!
Research it! :)
Gurl
That’s one of the things I love about Drag Race, it introduced me to so many old school masterpieces 🥰
Mort Lindsey arrangement? Fantastic!

Spramped1 ... Amen! #ChurchOfJudy
Yep
Carnegie was some of the greatest evenings of my life…what a party. Most of the Official Judy Garland Fan Club was there and boy did we celebrate!
What I love about Judy as a singer is that she was very much aware of her vocal power, but she never overused it. She was a true artist and storyteller, never a show-off.
You're so right. She’s often referred to (sometimes by herself) as a ‘belter’ but she sang medleys with restraint and subtlety.
She was a good actress as well, and that certainly helped. She knew how to perform and sell a song like no one before or since. And those arrangements were just out of this world. I've never heard this song arranged in this way before. The tempo was way faster than how it is commonly performed.
Precisely. She knows her instrument and uses it perfectly. Her vocals will always be iconic.
Thank God for these shows so generations can see how great she was. No performer compares to her. No one.
This is Judy at her best. Nobody can do this version of this song like her. Saw the movie last night about her last months. Don't miss it!
She was just brilliant. Amazing!
She's so in command, and at home there. And her camera technique is phenomenal. Plus, she's so open to her surroundings, and so completely present, that as a viewer I get that thrilling feeling that anything could happen up there.

at Carnegie Hall (listen to the album & this song.) Best arrangement.

The always amazing Judy!

@@jonathankieranwriter: Bob here again...and yes, after a 10 minute standing ovation for her walking onstage, we never sat down again.
This is a person, an artist, being a genius. Painful, difficult to watch, brilliant, far ahead of her time, enjoyable, inexplicable, jarring, beautiful. None of it makes sense, but all of it makes sense.
3:05 is supernatural. Judy's voice is really unique.
This song fills me with a sort of melancholy and an inspiring energy at the same time. She was amazing.
she always brings a smile to my face - the band is smokin' - Judy is ON. there will never be another Judy Garland.
Goosebumps.
Best entertainer that ever lived.
Out of this world performance!!! Such a talent!!!!
Absolutely extraordinary. I've been a singer all my life-church choirs, etc. Judy's artistry with a song is never better demonstrated than in this piece. The rhythm, the modulations-jaw dropping!
she sang from her soul
more like her toes!
I had heard this song with June Allyson when she was a guest star precisely on the Judy Garland Show, she sounded cute. Oohh, but with Judy it's a totally different experience!!
Thank you..
Fantastic Judy 💞.. 💜🌿
PHENOMENAL! Best arrangement of this song ever and Judy just kills it! Love this video!
Thank you for such lovely poem i have heard
Electric. One of the rarest talents EVER. No one could "put one over" like the one and only Judy.
Love that song so much and she was so magnificent an artist
I love JUDY GARLAND!!!
Magnificent! She cruises through this difficult arrangement with ease. No-one better!
BRILLIANT AND ELECTRIFYING ❤
Difficult song,,,,but she was ,,,,,, perfect 👌🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
She is so spot on here.
Absolutely the greatest performance ever!!!!!
This song is impossible. I love it. Judy absolutely slays
EPIC. Yes, that word comes to mind. Nothing like this, or her, today. Staggering talent, the likes of which we'll never see again. This is so visceral it just about sets me on fire! WHOA!!!!!

🙂 GO! GIRL! GO! THERE'S JUDY! THEN THERE THE REST! 🙂 THAT WILD ARRANGEMENT! WAS PERFECTION FOR HER!
This was someone who was 100% on top of her game...and then for this song notched it up to 300%.....I really don't think she thought she would be this good. She nailed that last note....one of those rare occurences where you're already "that good," but your voice just catches that wave and rides to a crescendo that staggers....
Wow! Thank You for posting this -
it's just amazing to see her after she performs (not mentioning during) she just has this great energy and pride that surprises me every time.
Amazing!
There will never be another Judy Garland
I'm in awe of her talent...just takes my breath away...what joy!
Absolutely THE BEST!!! No one has ever come close to her awesome talent.
She was just wow.

3:01 - 3:14 Speechless. 🤯👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great Harold Arlen song, TERRIFIC Arrangement, inimitable Judy!!
Absolutely immaculate. 😍
What a voice! Thunder expresses it beautifully. Reverberating into the cosmos. R.I.P. Judy. I would have loved to see one of these concerts. Before my time unfortunately.
What a beautiful voice. She was like the black Cab Calloway.
This woman was an utter DELIGHT!
Watch her at the end..... there is no way anyone can avoid falling for her.
Wow...force of nature!
Absolutely amazing! No singer today can even hold a candle to Judy!
This is as great as it gets! I'm so grateful that this recording exists! ❤️
WOW!!! I'm at a loss for superlative words!!! Wish I could have seen her live.

Every recording I watch she ends with such a humble bow and thank you.
Such 👏 a 👏 legend👏
YASSSSSSSSSSS NAOMI
Outstanding performance. She was one of the best!
Correction, She WAS THE BEST, AND STILL IS THE BEST.
Amazing!!! I wish I was alive at the time to see Judy in person!! I love her so much!!
she was an amazing talent!

GOOSEBUMPS
Somewhere between Naomi slaying the lipsync and the performance in Judy...what a song.
Loved it!!!!!!!! I love when singers get completely engrossed into the song
JESUS CHRIST …WHAT A PERFORMANCE…
I'd argue that this is an even better performance than at Carnegie Hall. She seems to have more control here. Both superlative performances, though.
WOOF!!!! Tremendous!
This is soooo good
Rip Manila. Atleast she left off of a amazing song ❤
All bow down !!!
Thank you ..
