Every time I listen to this great set, I am amazed at how quick a thinking singer Lady was. She caught the tempo of Nobody's Business in her very first line before the count was really established since it was a jump start; and you can tell she figured out before she even got to line 2 how she intended to compensate. She wasn't a singer, she was a musician who played voice. A genius musician.
@@rozevans2120 Aww wow I am humbled by that. Thanks! Just speaking it from the heart. I love Lady. I was born 18 years after she died and she STILL ended up being a huge musical influence on me. She raised my sky musically.
Billie Holiday was the best she's the greatest no one could ever do her out no one I mean no one you got to respect this lady think about the term she grew up and when and how was that look at this this is greatness and I'm 55 and I love this music
Oh to be able to replace the pain in Lady's life with some of the joy we feel listening to her. Wondering if the world to come has some of this particular wonderment...?
everybody on the comments keep saying her voice was off her voice was not off you must you don't really know music getting jazz she's not off she's really singing her hard away this is really music whoever is making these comments don't know what the f*** they talking about this lady is one of the greatest ladies ever with jazz she's a ball she's like the greatest I love her
Nobody can ever see my Billie Holiday I can be dead and going to no one will ever take this lady place back then you had to be a junkie you look at the things she went through I mean I'm not making sense excuse but look what she went through back then everybody got high
By the time the group got to Boston, Billie was no longer part of it. I remember Al Hibbler, once Duke's vocalist and at this point a successful pop star, singing with the Basie band. And Joe Williams. It was a magnificent assemblage but I was too young--at 11 years of age- to appreciate it fully.
Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday💓💓💓💓they're Beautiful People bless with a natural LOVE and Gift of Music🤗🤗🤗May they Both Rest in Music HEAVEN🙏🙏🙏🙏Thank You 🙏for a Job Well DONE😚😚😚😚
You know that there is something about them and certain classics like,,"April in Paris" and "autumn in New York";their versions of those songs seem so greater than most
Her voce is incredible, Maybe not as its very best, but incredible nonetheless. Can you imagine how much guts it took stand up and sing like that in Carnegie Hall? Why come across most is her ability to deliver a totally authentic performance. For this reason, no one there that night would've been disappointed in what they heard. Once she got warmed up she was amazing. I love swinging and yet world-weary delivery. I would give right arm to go back be there. Bravo!

Only Billie phrases the way a horn player would as well as singing lyrics in a such an honest way. Most other singers needed to scat to show their jazz chops. Thankfully, she never did and is still remembered as the greatest jazz singer.
I hope the racist man who had her handcuffed to her sick bed in her last days has a hot place far down below Lena Horne understood Billie holiday so well
Sarah Vaughn can hold rich notes better, in my opinion!! Both singers are awesome!! BH voice is priceless and raspy. Sarah's more smoother and richly articulate. Both ladies of song were very skilled 👄🎶🎹👍!!
Rumor has it that Lady didn't like to scat but she could out-scat Ella (of course I find that hard to believe, but Lady was a genius and I guess it is possible). I always wished she'd take one of those swinging choruses on Lover Come Back and just go to town...
Nobody that I've heard could out-scat Lady Ella. They couldn't then and no one today can. I had several of Lady Day's albums, songs from her early recording days to what I consider her best, Lady in Satan, and I've heard no scat singing from Lady Day.
@@geraldinetalley3664 I agree comparison between Lady Day and Ella is like comparing DaVinci and Michelangelo, why compare two masters of their craft…. Just enjoy their work…
@@geraldinetalley3664 Oh they are definitely two different planets to me! I just always found that statement interesting because when you think "scat" you think "Ella" and I always wondered what they heard Lady do that made them say that. The statement was made in "Wishing On The Moon" and if I'm not mistaken it was Bobby Tucker or Mal Waldron that said it.
She had some "off" spots I guess, but she recovered like a pro...Nobody's Business was too fast for her but she floated over it like "oh well" and it sounded fine to me!
michael morgan He was the worst, man. I was just thinking the other day how they completely fibbed his character in Lady Sings The Blues. He was no good for her.
I think this is me, but I don't know if it is me. There are other Keith Simmons' on the thing. I am the black Keith Simmons: Who owns Hateration Recording Corporation. Thank for the upload of Lady Day! She's my American Idol!
I beg to differ that this set is good. As she got older she was drugged out more. You can hear it in her voice and her musicality was lacking vs her performances of these songs in early years. She's still an incredible artist.
Never the less, I don't think there is a singer dead or alive even being drunk or high with her impeccable time delivery and still be in key. Drunk and or high. Maybe Judy Garland.
@@ians5597 What does your ear hear? For those involved in music, especially those who sing, they will tell you that she is not in good voice. Listen to her earlier material and compare that with this. But I'm not going debate the issue.
@@geraldinetalley3664 I'm just saying that Billie "not in good voice" is still vastly superior to a great many others at their best. She's still feeling the music, still has that timing and the emotion that adds weight to what she's singing.
Love you Billie
BILLIE AND BASIE MAKE ME EXTREMELY HAPPY!
From Paris, France
Me too, and she was some kind of LADY
Lady days voice is something you can't put into words. Baltimore proud. 410 stand up.

I wish we had this kind of music now . This was real music. Lady Day 💕
Love you forever billy
The Count is on the lady is so reagal, and the horns are just humming. My man is outstanding
The great Tony Bennett said that the Count is the best and as a SINGER you really want him
Five dollars got you the best seat in the house in 1954. I would pay 500 dollars to see that show, oh my, what a show!!

OH MY GOD THIS SET IS SO GOOD!!! I'll probably say this every time I hear it. She was such a PRO!
LADY IN FINE VOICE... BRAVO
Those who say she was not in good voice- who are you to judge? Really. I can hunch- not a successful musician. Beautiful- ty for sharing this.
That was later. She lost her voice in the end. I live Billie. I always have.

Omg that band is swinging their butts off ! Love this version of nobody’s Bussiness I was like swing it lady!!! ❤❤❤
Cuando oigo una voz que sale de las entrañas como la de Billie me hiere el alma
Thank you. Thank you. I's read this story before but now I get to hear it. She was very shaky, but being Lady she still swung the hell out of it.

Lady Day would not have been able to scat. She wasn't that type of singer. The First Lady of Song, Lady Ella could do both, sing and scat.

love it tried to post it fb said some people would find it offensive ...... seriously
She sang with Basie in the 30s and Shaw
Hard times for her, specially with Shaw.
She swung the FOOL out of "Them There Eyes"
Shaky start or not ...Lady had them ...and they wanted more . She knew how to hook it no matter the tempo or the accompaniment .
A great sound capture, but this is not a video capture of them performing together. I wish it was.

There is a rehearsal 1955 where she scats a little .
