Yeah, the pin just keeps the hammer in place. When the hammer flies off, it starts the primer which gives you a 4 second count down (Unless it's a dud) and then it goes kaboom and shrapnel flies everywhere

10:40 fun fact the “hammer” is called a spoon, the pin keeps the spoon in place the grenade’s fuze starts once the spoon flys off, a grenade timer is usually 3 seconds or 5 i dont know that for a fact but what i do know is dont hold it for longer than 3 seconds (maybe it was cook it for 3 before throwing it or something, cant remember)
I know its been two years, but i just gotta say, if you were in actual combat NEVER "cook" a grenade. You would be putting everything on the line, hinging on the hope that grenade doesnt go off early for whatever reason. Youre not gunna see a grenade fly back at you like its cod, theyre actually a bit hefty

He is right though. As long as the hammer doesn't fall out of the slot in the hand grenade, it won't start the timer for it to explode. The pin is just a step to have the grenade explode, not what causes it to explode.
