  • In the second of three videos explaining how the mythology of Odin and Yggdrasil heavily influenced ASOIAF, we'll dive into Bran Stark's tendency to fall, fly, hatch eyeballs from his forehead, and of course, 'trip his little Stark nuts off.' We'll compare the Nightfort to Valhalla, and we'll visit Whitewalls from The Mystery Knight to discuss the wily Maynard Plumm, who is of course Bloodraven.

I love your work. You're not explaining what GRRM is doing with his story. You're explaining how and why stories are told, and how that applies to this particular story. Your analysis is much more than ASOIAF bullshittery.

True, but the bullshitter can be fun too. I have no real opinions about N+A vs R+L, but it's fun listening to folks lay out the perceived evidence, and they can be useful as supplemental reading for LMLs discussions. Gray Area's re-reads are pretty fun, and of course, so are Quinn's Ideas.

I like this series, the live stream was good too. Hope the back is doing better and you've earned some much needed funds. Looking forward to part 3 and any other live streams 💜 also I have a gorgeous 5 string Yamaha, she doesn't have a name though. I like that you gave yours such a cool and ancient name with some deeply personal meaning too. Now your bass has extra character!
Oh yeah.... cool video too, I had thought of some of this stuff when I read world of ice and fire, the potential connection to norse myth. But I was mostly working from the bits I knew, so it's cool to get your in depth study into this and your thoughts.
    Take care 💜
PS. I agree with your thoughts on relationships too. Was married for ten years, married young. We're still close though. I'm now in a new relationship... Well it's been like 4 years, so it's not really new. There's pain when you realise that your relationship has died. You have to grieve, but everyone is so much happier now. We're all in a better place and we were clever enough to see it before we hated each other, and so there can still be love ❤️

    Great intro, excellent video.
I always interpreted the great winged snake, fires, & such to be Summer trying to understand the fire in the castle & the damage it’s causing out of sight. There are other passages where Bran gets his consciousness muddled with Summer’s & misinterprets things. That doesn’t preclude the other layers of symbolism that are woven into the story.

Question: I have yet to find an academic journal or professor who studies the field of "mythical astronomy." What is the origin of this term and what is its relationship with your approach to understanding ASOAIF?

    • @DavidLightbringer
      @DavidLightbringer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I made it up, ha! Almost all myth has a component which is commenting on the forces of nature and the movements and cycles of the seasons and stars. So it’s really just mythology that is functioning as a kind of proto science. The word astronomy on its most basic level simply refers to the observation of the heavens. It doesn’t have to involve advanced machinery or science. Ancient man encoded their astronomy into mythology, so, mythical astronomy.

Amazing work as always dude. Your take on comparative mythology is always so on point, and I can't wait for your book!
P.s. where can I get some LML squisher content? Has there been any? I've been tearing through the back catalogue but can't seem to find any despite how many crumbs get dropped

I mean there’s the Patchface stream, but no you’re right there’s not enough Squisher content by a long shot. I’ll hop on it (with my springy Squisher legs)

the friend who got me into ASOIAF needs to see your work. where do i tell him to start?
background: he told me when i started reading to look into fan theories (particularly the dornish conspiracy-less interesting to me but that’s where he’s at), and that’s ultimately how i came upon your treatises of starry wisdom. he will definitely be into what you have to say, but he will need to start somewhere logical with material that’s easily digestible, due to having already been exposed to lots of stuff that is on a totally different interpretive track from what you bring to the table. and having seen or heard (nearly) everything you’ve put out, im not sure i can figure out myself what the best starting point would be. im so on board with your mythical astronomy that i have come to take all of it for granted. and there’s so much. what should i link him to first?
unrelatedly, im digging this series. moar!! (but take time to keep your brain healthy)

Gosh that’s a good question. I probably have a handful of answers, based on his area of interest. The Weir Walkers is really easy to get into, Garth the Green Man if he’s into green men, Isle of Leng if he’s into Lovecraft, the Great Empire of the Dawn: Dragonlords of Ancient Asshai might be the best overall answer, that’s just a fun, kick ass theory and it has cool Lord of the Rings shit in part 2 (Westeros). If the interest is show vs. books, particularly with Dany, Bran, or Jon, you can steer them towards Born to Burn the Others, Lord Snow, or King Bran 1,2, and 3. Any of those are good starting points... thank you!

There's a bit of Greenser/Children of the Forrest symbology in Bran's falling chapter. Ned calls Bran a squirrel. He also says "you're not my son", but I can't really fit that in anywhere.
