Only filling up with Ethanol free gas was a big one for me, even without using my flashpaq tuner in tandum. Yeah I would say for those that can't re-gear , like those that might have a Cherokee Trailhawk like I do, if you want to get the correct "throttle feel" back , then choosing one of the tow or sport modes from a throttle controller will help the Jeep have the correct "feel".
I just bought a 22 Jeep gladiator Mojave and I’m getting 16.4mpg combined. My friend told me “when you buy a Jeep, you don’t buy for MPG. You buy for fun under sun, rain, snow, mountain and beach”.

The biggest thing in my opinion is how you drive. I can get close to 25mpg putting around my rural area, because there's lots of opportunities to just coast. Until I get on the highway, and then I'm at the mercy of the wind for my mpg. If it's windy I can expect around 15 or lower. If it isn't windy I'll get around 18-19.
@@rickycastro1877 being stock I would expect decent highway, in my case my Jeep is overkill. I have 39/13.5-17 BFG KM3's on it now and it's been averaging around 14-15 mpg down the highway, and about 22 around town. It's a manual transmission and I live out in the boonies so most of my driving in it is slow and in most cases it doesn't need to be in gear to keep going. So I let it coast alot.
I replaced my 35" nitto mud tires with 35" Mickey Thompson mtzp3, they're a bit taller, lighter, quieter. That was how I gained mpg. Not much but noticable power too.
Great ideas brah. These vehicles are boxes on wheels & we all knew that when we bought it. I have a 3.5” lift, 35’s, light bar, winch, steel bumpers & side steps. The only mod I did engine wise was a green air filter. I don’t “step” on it much & I range from 17-20.4 mpg’s on h-way, city is still in the teens. All that depends on summer/winter gas blends. Weight is the villain of the wrangler & I say if it doesn’t benefit the Jeep off road then don’t buy it, even if it may look cool. 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

I don't care about fuel mileage. And honestly I am about $5.00 a gallon from giving a crap. But at least one other big player is altitude. In southern Utah we are always above 2500ft and can get over 6000ft really quick. My favorite mod besides the seemingly obvious things you have already mentioned is blocking my egr. My engine runs smoother at all rpms, (does not affect Idle, ha well it shouldn't) I run 35" bfg ko2's and 5:13's and with the egr blocked at sea level on a recent trip to commiefornia I was getting a constant 24/25mpg with the cruise set at the speed limit 70mph. We dont smog our vehicles here so not worried about the inspection. Oh did I mention I have 180k miles on the clock. I will do the cummins 2.8 repower when it fails ... and it will fail (insert evil laugh here!) Thanks for the great content.
@@JKGearandGadgets I was in a position to change it, (My EGR) I had a check engine light. The code was reporting high current for EGR valve movement. I took the valve off, its on the right hand side of the 3.8l just behind the right exhaust manifold by the fire wall. If that does not help locate it there is a heat shielded stainless steel line that is directly in the middle of your upper intake plenum just follow that down and you'll find it. Its typically over $100 so it decided to clean it with some carb and choke cleaner and my M16 cleaning kit first.... On loan from the united states government. It was very dirty and I expect it would have worked well, BUT As I began to install it I recalled on all of my 4.2L and 4.0L that had an EGR when the vacuum diaphragm failed and it did I usually took it off and opened up a soda can and made a gasket that only had two bolt holes in it. This was no different I just simply made a gasket out of metal and only transferred the two bolt holes and then re-installed it. It has been that way for about 50K miles and the most notable change besides the fuel mileage is how much longer my oil stays clean. Since I use the 1year or 24K amsoil that is important.

Just bought a '14 JKU but with BUILT suspension. (60 front/80 rear with 5.13 gearing) Running 40" MT tires and looking for every mpg I can get. I have the twin ARB compressor with air lockers. She is a monster - wish I could attach a picture!~
You know, if you swap the motor with a Chevy Colorado v6, it'll fit almost perfect, just rearrange battery and motor mount by 1/2 inch. You could add all those nice things and keep the spare tire. Save about 23-26mpg. I've seen them done aswell with the vortex motors aswell.
For those curious, I’ll break down the actual math on MPG and the real world cost. Let’s compare 15 mpg versus 20 mpg. The average American drives somewhere around 13,500 miles a year. At 15 mpg, you will need 900 gallons of gas. At 20 mpg, you 675 gallons of gas. That gets us a difference of 225 gallons, at $3/gallon that comes out to $675/year more you will pay for a 33% reduction in fuel economy. The reason I bring this up is that most of the things mentioned here will get you absolutely nowhere close to a 33% boost in fuel economy and will cost way more than the difference even if they did. Conclusion: Jeeps suck at mpg. Don’t worry about it too much because fuel economy isn’t really THAT big of a deal. Average Jeep owner can buy one less upgrade a year and you’ll make up the difference lol.

Honestly did! I went from 11-12 mpg up to 16-17 on the highway now with 35s and not regearing yet. I’ve heard from a lot of people that it’s not the greatest on the 3.6 but nothing but great reviews from anyone with a 3.8 Jeep!
Spot on! Imperative to have a plan on what you want to do with your Jeep. I think the best advice you gave is tire and wheel combo. Definitely doing the hood latches soon👍🏻. Good job, mang🤙
If you’re going to spend let’s say $5000 on a wheel and tire package to lose some weight. It’s not worth it. Say you increase mpg of 10%. (Higher than realistic) If you’re spending $120 a month in gas, it will take over 17 years to just break even. So please think about this in marathon terms. Heavy duty bumpers, rock sliders and a winch will all more than out do whatever savings you have an expensive options to lighten your vehicle. If you want expensive bigger wheels and tires or any other options do it. 😇 But be a really rustic about the math. 😂
Another good video. Many things to think about when designing your Jeep. What gears do you run? I have a 2010 jku with a standard trans, and I've been thinking about changing out the gears... Maybe with 4:10s because I'm gonna get 35" tires soon
I just did your under $100 exhaust install and I love it but am getting the same drone you talked about. What tip did you use to have dump it out of the side so the drone went away? Did you just weld it on? Thanks and great video as always
I kinda welded up my own setup, however you could go to an auto parts store and get a turndown or a slight angle pipe and run it out to the driver side like I did. You just want to get it pointed away from underneath the jeep
When we buy gas in rural areas (Lakeport, CA), we get as much as 20% better fuel economy and performance compared to urban areas (South San Francisco, CA). We’re suspecting ethanol, lousy octane, or other additives.
My Jeep gets between 15 & 16 mpg. Some day I will get the Cummins R2.8 swap with new Dana 44 front and 60 in back with ox lockers and 4.56 R&P. I hope to get 25 MPG then! But for now just paying at the pump! Like after the cost of all those modes I have the rite to worry about MPG! Lol
Good video. Great talking points. We all want to increase gas mileage on our thirsty toys. But honestly, the subject of fuel economy with a Jeep is about as apropos as how to improve a Jeep's 1/4 mile drag race time. Jeeps aren't "Cars" in my opinion. They are purpose built machines. As much as I would love to return to my factory 23mpg, I know I will have to accept my 15mpg and their is nothing I can really do about it other than throwing her in Neutral when rolling downhill on the freeway. ;) (That is a joke) Good points made in this video. 100% accurate. We are always making our mileage worse with ever mod. Be it weight gain or drag coefficient. But they look cool. Becky has been suggesting and asking for an iDrive for months. I may have to bite the bullet on that one. The Gas Cap app will be a must. Thanks
i drives don’t change fuel economy. throttle controllers just make it where you have to press harder on the pedal. no power is added either. tunes are the only thing that change them.

I’m getting 17.1 mpg with 35” 4” lift and a ton of accessories but I do have a super tuner programmer that’s help out a lot
whats that
What’s that ?
I have a 12' w the superchips programmer. 34's STT Pros and get the same mileage (17.3mpg). Even in the performance 93 octane setting I still get around 17.
I get about 16 mpg 2016 JKU Backcountry Edition on stock Willys 17" wheels on 35s Maxxis RZR MTs 2.5" Teraflex lift
The super chips flash paq. Is the best upgrade u can get driving wise. The car is faster then stock on 35’s with stock gear ratio. And mpg has went up 3mpg
You buy for fun under sun, rain, snow, mountain and beach”.
i have a 2015 lift kit ,over sized tires and it a auto trans , i started to shift the trans like a manual and i am get 18.9 miles per gallon ,
it can be a pain some time because you forget to shift up a gear . i run it at 2200 rpm on the highway , shift down on big hills and
it works , have fun
The biggest thing in my opinion is how you drive. I can get close to 25mpg putting around my rural area, because there's lots of opportunities to just coast. Until I get on the highway, and then I'm at the mercy of the wind for my mpg. If it's windy I can expect around 15 or lower. If it isn't windy I'll get around 18-19.
interesting thnx for your input :)
JeepJeep234 what year do you have ??
@@rickycastro1877 2008
JeepJeep234 thanks. Picking up a 2015 tomorrow. I know gas isn’t good but just seeing how to improve the Jeep. It will be all stock
Did you regear for 35s? I have an intake and it still bogs
@@Danielxperez14Yes, shop suggested 4.88. Bit aggressive in case I want to step up to 37 or 38s.
@@vinjkdiesel3122 yea I think I’ll go with 4:88, I just found a shop not too far going to ask for a quote
@@Danielxperez14 After you get it installed let me know what you think. I noticed a major difference.
So good he had this fuel tip years ago look at our gas prices today thanks gonna replace those hood latches, and nix the tire change for now thanks!!!
Agreed, hood flutter is a big problem with stock hood latches
I fill up once a week. Daily driver with an 1 hour round trip commute to work. I’m fine with that. Would mind shaving a mpg or two, but not the end of the world if I don’t. Having said that, I installed a smittybuilt roof rack and lost 3 mpg. Immediately uninstalled and sold it. That thing was a beast. Not to mention loud as hell!
I took a hit with my roof rack (weighs about 100 lbs), and my heavier tires. But I love the look of the rack too much to get rid of it.
@@Clay-i7y funny how when we put a roof rack on we lose mpg, but a 200 lb passenger doesn’t change anything. Wind resistance is a powerful thing a suppose. About to get a roof top tent. This should be great. Probably get 5mpg 😂
@@Revelation_Overland I want a roof top tent. One of the reasons I got the rack. Happy Overlanding! Now just trying to find a wife who wants to adventure.
@@Clay-i7y I have the wife that wants to adventure! Now we’re shopping for a rooftop tent 😂
@@Revelation_Overland You're in a great position. God Bless your family.
Nice Jeeps!!! My 1999 Xj has almost 400,000 miles and is just like new.
That’s interesting to hear, how did you delete it?
I have a 4.0 wrangler and I have a hose like thing from the valve cover to the intake is that what you are talking ablution
@@ComancheTribe69 No that is part of your pvc system. The valve you are looking for on your motor is on the intake. You can DM me and Ill send you a picture of it.
I got 20 mpg once, but I was towing another jeep with my jku. Makes no damn aense
Think I'm getting 22 24 mpg just driving round town?
Its all about how fast you speed up
My 99 TJ gets like 10 all the time buy my mom's 89 XJ gets like 15 town and 18 highway same engine All I can think is it's the transmission.
Great info from somebody who knows from real world experience!
I love sea foam, it really does work. Keep up the great up work man
1996 Ford Bronco. 5.0L V8 with 35s and 4 inch lift. Doesnt get worse in gas mileage then that
it does, the 5.8 :)
f350 460...
I get from 14-18 MPG with my Jeep TJ with 2.4l powertech.
What size tires and gearing are you running. Thanks
My 350z only gets 21 mpg so don't worry you're not doing that bad.
Great info. I just bought my first and I’m having to learn all this stuff. My 08 stick only gets 16 mpg now and man with all that work you have done and getting those mpg that’s amazing! Keep up the great work!
Just bought a '14 JKU but with BUILT suspension. (60 front/80 rear with 5.13 gearing) Running 40" MT tires and looking for every mpg I can get. Had the Pedal Commander on my last Jeep and disabled it as my MPG went way down with it. I may consider removing my back seat and spare to save alot of weight and give me more space in back. I have the twin ARB compressor with air lockers. She is a monster - wish I could attach a picture!~
My 16 4dr JK on 275/65/18 (32") Nitto grappler, with 400lbs of driver and passenger and 150lbs of luggage gets 21.2 combined.
JKU 3 inch lift 37 11.50 TOYOs with tuner on 93 octane gets 6mpg at 100mph, 12 at 80, 15 at 70, 18 at 60 unless I am pulling my 12 ft box trailer.
It would be interesting to do a mileage comparison test with the windshield folded down and no hardtop. Full flow through ventilation LOL
Hal 9000 I think they did something like that on myth busters and the car with the full top got better mpg
I can tell you with my cj windshield down it's worse. It catches more wind between the hood than up.
I plan on doing a diesel swap in my jk, after my 3.6l dies.
You forgot "get a two door"
Trust me, it s still terrible 🤣
@@pietrorovelli9523 I had a two door 2012 v6 and regularly got 26-28 mpg I should add that my girlfriend at the time typically got 18-22 mpg so it really does make a big difference how you drive
@@i1-L22Belarus how?!? I actually would appreciate advise. I have a stick shift 2012 3.6, only mods intake and 33" wheels. If I drive like a granny with no ac I get 18.5. I don't think I have ever seen 19mpg
@@pietrorovelli9523 mine was automatic, but still drive like there's an egg under your foot and you don't want to crack it. For real it's all about easy throttling and being smart about hills. If you're going down hill gain a few mphour if you're going uphill hold the throttle steady and don't worry about losing a few mphour. It will all average out to the same amount of time spent driving but your mpgallons will increase. That and keep an eye on the computer calculation if you have it on the dash. That's all I can suggest.
@@i1-L22Belarus awesome. I want to buy a 2012 unlimited sport off a friend who's planning to trade for a truck. I feel that there wouldn't be a huge difference between 4 door and 2 door, it just depends on how you drive. When I finally get the car, I'd give your advice a try.
I haven't upgraded my gears but after upgrading my tires to 35's and new wheel with steel running boards and steel front bumper, I only get 10-11 MPG. smh.
What year Jeep ya have?

A few days ago I did the math for my 2006 TJ Jeep Wrangler “Golden Eagle” and she is running with a 13.815 MPG. Holy hell. Like stated in the comments, we have the Aerodynamics if a brick glued to an obese elephant rolling through 12 ft of tar.
Are you sure it's not 13.992?
Comments are hilarious. 2nd video of yours I have seen, subscribed. New to the Jeep life.
Love the looks of the JW Speaker lights. I just upgraded mine last week. OlllllO
Diesel swap, best way to get better / great fuel economy, though it can be (very)pricey.
Get Upside sucks in my area. Only shell gas stations are available and they’re the most expensive as well. Too bad Wawa or 7/11 aren’t available
I have a 2 door mostly just me in it so bye bye back seat ha ha saved a little weight and helped some.
This guys funny. Just because the hood doesn't flutter doesn't mean air isn't still entering in the same area
Have you ever driven a JKU going 80mph in the wind and feel the hood catch air? You can literally feel the jeep slow down and struggle.
I’m about to buy my first wrangler and currently drive and ‘05 Grand Cherokee. Sad to say my GC gets 13 miles per gallon on the highway. A Wrangler is an upgrade😂
Cruz control at 65 mph and lite on the throttle. Avg mpg is 25. Currently renting one.
My honest opinion is the trail dash 2 saved my 3.8. Completely changed it waiting till I can swap it to a hemi but still needed a little boost because my spare tire is a solid 3-4” above my soft top and the wind kills me. Great video
You noticed a big difference?
Honestly did! I went from 11-12 mpg up to 16-17 on the highway now with 35s and not regearing yet. I’ve heard from a lot of people that it’s not the greatest on the 3.6 but nothing but great reviews from anyone with a 3.8 Jeep!
Thanks for the vid! Any specific tips for manual transmission?
I removed my backseats and hardtop to save weight, makes a big difference in mpg and acceleration
Love your channel! No question the best Jeep channel on TH-cam! Whats your background when it comes to mechanical?
Another good video. Many things to think about when designing your Jeep. What gears do you run? I have a 2010 jku with a standard trans, and I've been thinking about changing out the gears... Maybe with 4:10s because I'm gonna get 35" tires soon
I’m on 5.13s. If your going 35s then go ahead and go with 4.56 as a minimum for 35s
If I wanted fuel economy I would buy a Prius. But I bought a fun brick that looks badass and does what I want it to an asks for more...lol
Beautiful rig!
Thank you!
Check my bad boy!
Mine have all been stock(6) and all averaged 18-20 mpg from my 1969-1999;yeah they're about as aerodynamic as a flying brick.
New subscriber here. Love the videos bro. Keep ‘em coming.
Sorry man, I laughed at your last comment you made. I have a good friend named Kevin Campbell and I thought you were him. Thanks for the sub!
4 inch lift, 37’s, yeah I get like 8 mpg if I’m lucky lmaoooo
I just did your under $100 exhaust install and I love it but am getting the same drone you talked about. What tip did you use to have dump it out of the side so the drone went away? Did you just weld it on? Thanks and great video as always
I kinda welded up my own setup, however you could go to an auto parts store and get a turndown or a slight angle pipe and run it out to the driver side like I did. You just want to get it pointed away from underneath the jeep
Thanks for the tips Ben, I definitely plan on checking out the throttle response.
When we buy gas in rural areas (Lakeport, CA), we get as much as 20% better fuel economy and performance compared to urban areas (South San Francisco, CA). We’re suspecting ethanol, lousy octane, or other additives.
Great video Ben, I can't help but laugh at the thought of a fuel-efficient Jeep! what would we do then!? lol
Probably spend the saved money on more mods 😂
I get 42 mpg.....
drafting a tractor trailer......on a steep decline.....in neutral....with skinny small tires.....
Thanks
I still have my stock fenders. do u recommend changing them or keepin them for a better mpg. thx
i drives don’t change fuel economy. throttle controllers just make it where you have to press harder on the pedal. no power is added either. tunes are the only thing that change them.
My JK I used seafoam , it was impressive, Gain between 5 and 6 mph just with 2 bottles, Eck
This was actually super helpful. Thank you!
What fenders do you have?
I love the way they look.
Thanks, they are MCE flares, narrow version. Lightweight, flexible and extra clearance
Best mpg tip: don’t buy a Jeep for mpgs
Ben, please do a sea foam video, be wanting to do it to my 08 jku.
Sounds good! I’ll do it!
