I admire how open Jon is to criticism and feedback. The world would be a much better place if more people had that maturity and inner zen.

Best part of Jon Stewart is that he is ALWAYS seeking answers.

The people: “We love you, Jon! Thank you so much for coming back! We missed you so much, you beautiful comedy man!”

No. They did not. The only time people shit on Jon Stewart are when they play off of a joke he famously made or when they are explicitly paid to make him look bad. He really is a beloved figure, and even now, he’s still so down-to-earth and grounded.
It's really about how much he fought for the 9/11 survivors. Not just that, but how fervently he fought for it, setting comedy aside. It's like hating Jon McCain, I disagreed with him immensely, but he was a national treasure. Even conservatives know what Jon Stewart did for this country.

Keep in mind I am one of the pawns Mr. Rumsfeld so creatively threw across the world chess table. I distinctly remember reciting his name so many times during chain of command practice during bootcamp. A man who gambled all in with my life and the lives of thousands of others while holding merely lies. Certainly not the first nor last government official to lie while the risk and consequence falls onto others, yet a name I remember as if implanted through something akin to indoctrination. I hope he's enjoying Hell. I'm not religious but bearing false witness deserves no less.
the issue Jon is talking about with questioning someone while remaining present is very particular thing. its like having practiced your play for a game over and over and then when it comes time to execute, you may have to switch-it-up and improvise...its like a dual tracked mindset...
Jon mentioned arbys and it gave me a flashback of him on the daily show when he said " arbys, if your stomach could get kicked in the nuts" that was years and years ago and it still sticks in my mind
Arby's was just a random punching bag. It's not markedly worse than other fast food chains. I guess you could say the decision to mock that restaurant was kind of Arbytrary. I'll show myself out.

This particular episode was great. For me it really brought out what I thought for decades that you can fight on either side but there is common ground with sticking points that are not worth pissing off your friend or neighbor. Just let it go. You get more bees with honey.

You guys hit the nail on the head about trying. I work for a very large and often horrible to people company. It's kinda a helpless feeling but at least you tried.
What Jon talks about around the 37-38 minute mark with being blind to the present by your own intentions is a major point I have to overcome every day in sales. You are so eager to present what you think is what the customer needs you don't listen as they directly tell you what their needs are. Training yourself to disassociate from your preconceived experience to actually use the moment to guide you is such a vital tool in so many areas of life.
A good number of people have an inherent inquisitive nature which makes active listening and want for the truth a lot easier. It sucks when others struggle with these qualities and unconsciously project their struggle on you.
Out of all the "ism"'s CLASSISM is the most important to fix.

Love this. I really appreciate the discussion about our participation in exploitation/hypocrisy. Chelsea is right in that sins do not cancel each other out; the situation merely highlights how all life suffers. The difference is reflected in the level of compassion that we are willing to act upon. Practically speaking, we are not independent agents free to live without participation in multiple racist or exploitative systems. We delude ourselves when we think we can somehow change the world by ourselves. We can only affect change through the systems we have relationships with. So, John, I hope you and your crew use whatever influence you have in your relationship with apple to increase the level of compassion being acted upon by the company at large.
I think their conversation also highlights a clear misunderstanding we have with with the word "racism." We've been trained to perceive the word strictly as an accusatory slur and mentally jump to the worst case examples, like "you're a Nazi sympathizer if you're racist!" But it's not that myopic: it's about how American society itself (despite significant progress) is still inherently racist, with a racist history that continues to have long-term effects. In that context, it's less about how individuals are racist actors, and more about acknowledging that racism is a systemic issue so ingrained we don't even see it when it happens right in our faces. It's so invisibly embedded that, when someone points this out, we often get deeply shocked and chagrined, to the point where we rationalize a way to overlook it and go into collective denial, using "politeness" and "grace" as a shield... and thereby allow the racist system to continue unabated.
I get Jon's point when he says "if everything is racist, nothing is racist": he's saying we're devaluing the word to the point where it's meaningless, because it should only be used for egregious examples of racism. But that's not how we deal with systemic issues; lambasting full-blown KKK members might make for entertaining news, but in the grand scheme of things it does little to resolve racialized inequality in regards to income, education, policing, etc. At the same time, because it's systemic, there's little point in singling out people who are simply living normal lives. Rather, by understanding what racism is, we are trying to build broader awareness of the institutionalized problems underscoring racism, in the hopes that enough awareness can generate action to create real, systemic change.

But if we blanket call everything racist, doesn’t that detract from our ability to understand what racism is? For example, she said that racism includes things like seeing something overtly racist happening and doing nothing-but I don’t see how that necessitates the conclusion. I’d love to believe that I would jump in to a situation where some people were ganging up and being racist towards someone…but as a physically disabled person, one of my thoughts is going to be for my own physical well being, and while one could call it cowardice of me to not jump in the middle of that…by her definition, it seems I’m either required to throw myself into a potentially violent situation or else be doomed a racist, in some form…and to me, that feels like a stroke that’s slightly too broad (as Stewart seems to think by saying that if it’s all, then none of it is). If an inaction to oppose racism (as she defined it; she doesn’t differentiate between willful inaction or any other circumstance of inaction) is the mark of racism, then almost literally every possible action becomes racism.
@@thefourshowflip I think you might want to look over my post again. What I wrote was actually about how we _shouldn't_ inappropriately use racism as a blanket term, nor single-out people who simply exist within the system..
My point was that that racism comes in many distinct forms at VERY different scales that should not be conflated.
Interpersonal racism is the what most people imagine when they hear the word "racist": overt things like yelling racial slurs and committing hate crimes. That type of racism often makes the news and evokes strong emotions, but typically occur on a smaller scale as our society has grown better equipped to shun that kind of behavior. Unfortunately, this is also the type of racism that garners the most attention, and thus becomes the first thing people think of when they hear the word "racism."
However, systemic racism is very different, much bigger, and ultimately the real problem. Systemic racism isn't as easy to grasp as slurs or hate-crimes. It doesn't immediately evoke emotional responses from those unaffected by it. They consist of problems/institutions that harm minority groups who don't always have the political power to protect themselves, but have lasted for generations and have become so ingrained in our society that the average person isn't even aware of it. This includes things such as unequal education, income, policing, etc., problems that were formed by racist laws and policies from the past (and some in the present) that continue to harm and disenfranchise minorities.
So obviously, systemic racism isn't the fault or responsibility of any one person. When I say the system is racist, I'm *not* saying that *you* are racist, or your family, or you friends, or your community. It's not something I'd expect you resolve on your own. None of us can. It takes a prolonged collective effort to make a change against something so deeply embedded in our history and culture.
That said, it does take courage to simply acknowledge that systemic racism is a thing. We're not expecting anyone to fling themselves into the midst of a hate-crime in progress, but we do want others to take that first step and realize that for all of our country's successes, there are still some critical flaws that we need to be aware of. And that awareness usually breeds proactive action of its own.

And why do we feel the need to qualify every statement in a conversation with caveats ? Is there such a fear of being misunderstood before we even get to the end of a sentence ? Learn to be in the present, people !
No one needs to learn to be present. Its actually the opposite. People are looking for ways to disagree and or find fault and misrepresent people positions. People need to be LESS engaged.
@@Presticles1 Well, sometimes when a conversation or debate becomes rapid-paced and either party wants to interject, it's often that A.) The other person has a natural enthusiasm to their way of speaking. B.) They are entering the conversation having researched both opposing arguments so is coming in more prepared and learned. But this doesn't mean either side isn't listening. They just have the counter-argument readily available because they did their homework.
Now, with your question regarding how a person might used the rhetorical device of qualifying or, as you said, adding caveats to their argument, this is them buttressing their next debate point with context that not only makes sure they are better understood, but also implies they know where this argument is going.
I can live with someone not liking deep dish pizza, I cannot live with someone conflating authentic Chicago pizza with deep dish pizza. Deep dish is very much Chicago pizza, but tailored to tourists. We enjoy it every so often, but not the majority of the time.
Ask any long-time Chicagoan, we/they will tell you that real Chicago pizza is tavern style - meaning, thin crust, cheesy and cut in squares. There’s a pleasant crisp to it. Simply delicious, and you can find great versions of it all around the city. I invite Jon and the group to try real Chicago pizza

I think holding people to their vote so hard in our fucked up two party system is intellectually dishonest at best. Like, to put it in star wars term everyone thinks they're the rebels and the philosophical leap you ask people to make when you say "Well why didn't you just vote for the other guy" is like having them say "Man, these rebels aren't rebellious enough. I should vote empire this time." which is insane. I think if we had a system that better represented people and the diversity of ideas we actually have in this country we could hold them more personally accountable, but as it is most really only ever had one choice and had to take the good with the bad.
except trump put in place things that hurt me & my loved ones. i cut contact with family for voting for him w no buyer's remorse. my safety & the safety of my friends is important enough to condemn my relatives who didn't care to take it into consideration. ofc the other option is harm reduction, but when your choices are 1) harm 2) harm reduction or 3) abstain, i absolutely have the right to judge you for picking #1
I also just fundamentally disagree that voting Republican/Trump is always an "active choice" of racism. In fact, I disagree that voting at all is a conscious or active choice for many people, even on the left. How often do we just go "oh well there's a D next to their name so I'll vote for them"? I think a large part of the population that voted for Trump, at least in 2016, thought in some way they were voting for the more utilitarian good candidate. There are absolutely some people who vote just to troll or because they actively want to further racism/sexism, but there are also people who are privileged enough to be single issue voters in issues that Republicans have historically aligned with (guns, abortions, low taxes). I 100% agree that the most moral position is to vote in a way that benefits people actively and to defend causes that lead to more economic equality and more tolerance, but if someone is manipulated into believing that abortion is murder or that the government is purely tyrannical and only guns can defend against that, or that Reagan neoliberalism is the economic mode of thought that leads to the most social welfare, then their vote is not actively racist or bigoted, but implicitly based on their material conditions. That to me is what is defined as "institutionalized racism", in that the structure of society motivates people towards certain actions and choices unconsciously that further an imbalance of power based on the sect of people who wield power and shaped those institutions. Like not everyone has felt the moral compulsion to reckon with their beliefs, because their conditions inform them that moral or utilitarian good lies exactly where their beliefs have always landed.

People have the ability to change and grow, make poor decisions and learn from them. To cast away the people who you should love and challenge is not the appropriate response, but I believe you have the ability to grow and learn.

Let’s shift the conversation off of individuals (who is and is not racist, etc) and look at the policies, positions, and rhetoric advocated by Republicans vs Democrats. When analyzed this way it’s no contest as to which party’s policies etc. more often support and which party’s policies etc more often hurt people of color, women, LGBTQ+, poor people, and immigrants. That doesn’t mean that each party, and each of us individually, don’t have inconsistencies and contradictions on these issues but from a collective policy perspective it’s quite clear which support greater equity and access and which don’t. And policies, positions, and rhetoric have real impacts on real people….and if we choose to support politicians that advocate policies, positions, and rhetoric that create greater inequality and access and hurt more than help, then yeah, those choices support racism, sexism, etc. whether or not we personally “feel” or perceive ourselves to be racist, sexist, etc. Glad to have you back Jon!
Actually, When analyzed the data says the Democrats have done more to hurt people of color over the last 40 years of my lifetime so your argument is moot. Your opinion on the data is telling. It’s a broad sweeping claim to make without any data. Clinton apologized for the 90’s Crime bill that hurt people of color and Biden has not. That bill is still hurting people of color, Obama didn’t do anything and Biden isn’t doing anything about it right now. Prisons are full of people

I am one of those 90s kids who grew up with Jon Stewart, I love your work and everything you have done for our veterans and first responders, so first of all thank you.
So I just want to say one thing, I think the show is great and I'm really enjoying it, but I feel like sometimes you guys get lost in the race discussion and essentially the oppression Olympics. And let me be clear especially, because I am writing a comment on TH-cam, I am not white. I am Peruvian. I immigrated to the US at the age of 5 with my mother and have been here now for 25 years. I have a degree, I have a career, I have a family here. I love this country I consider it my home as much as if not more than Peru. I recognize that there is racism in this country, true racism and I absolutely understand that there are historical leftovers that still have an effect today, it would be blind of me not to. Especially when you consider just how little time has passed between now and when Jim Crow was in place. It's like 1 person ago. However, I feel like this country is getting so hyperbolic to the point of just emphasizing the racism while solving none of the problems and just making new ones. Making villains out of thin air and never solving some of the real problems we face as Americans, at least in my opinion.
We spent all of Trump's presidency making him out to be Thanos that so many of us ignored what got him elected in the first place. We ignored and continue to ignore what will most likely get him elected again. I don't understand Chelsea's point of calling a vote for trump racism. I mean I get the viewpoint, but it makes no sense. How can you in one breath say that voting for him is inherently racist, and not say a thing about some of the policies that Biden has enacted, or Obama, or Clinton. How can you claim that its racist to vote for Trump and not realize that Kamala Harris is responsible for encaracerating probably more black and brown people than Trump ever did. Listen I'm not a republican, I know you can't take my word for it, but I am not. I don't like Trump I didn't vote for him the first time and I wouldn't vote for him the next, and believe me there will be a next time. If not him one of his God awful children. However, I'm not going to sit here criticizing Trump and the republican party as if the democrats don't serve the same corporations as if they don't also play the same political game. Calling a vote for trump racist only alienates Americans more. You just end up making some people into enemies. People who probably, given time and understanding, could come to your side. Instead they just end up shifting further and further right to oppose the radical hyperbolic rhetoric spewing from the left these days. I'm sorry, but how can you vilify Trump for the same shit so many if our other presidents have and continue to do. How can you say nothing about Biden when Flint's water is still shit? How can you say nothing about Obama when Flint's water is still shit, did you all forget the stunt he pulled there? You want to talk kids in cages let's talk about it, because I came to this country as an immigrant and some of those kids were as young as I was at the time, if not younger, but let's not pretend like those cages didn't exist during Obama's time in office. Let's not pretend like Obama didn't get us into more wars than Bush did. Or that Clinton directly exacerbated the war on drugs because he didn't want to seem weak on crime. Enacting policies that greatly affected people in poor communities and still affect them today. Come on people let's not be so blind. Trump wasn't the worst thing to happen to this country he was just more of the same, but at least his shit character and personality brought a lot of it out to the open.
Let's stop alienating people and instead start a conversation, let's have discussions and let's be angry about the right things. Let's be angry that our educational systems are shit, let's be angry that our infrastructure gets a grade of D, let's be angry that we live in arguably the richest nation and our Healthcare system is absolute garbage. Let's forget about Trump and focus on our current administration and demand that they do something for the American people instead of just bombing more countries and paying lip service to whatever cause is in the zeitgeist. I firmly believe that to fix the systemic problems in our country we need to focus on improving the lives of all Americans not just the black and brown ones. And as a fellow brown one, I think tackling our Healthcare, infrastructure and education will help greatly mitigate those leftover effects from our nation's racial past. And again that does not mean racism doesn't exist, we just gotta stop making it the boogeyman and focus on what is really keeping our nation from being the superpower it claims to be.
Anyway to everyone at the Problem With Jon Stewart, you may never read this, but I hope you do and I hope it means something. Regardless of what I have ranted about thus far, I do still appreciate the show and all the great work that goes into it, please don't regard this as an attack.
Jon Stewart, you truly are a treasure and thank you for coming back. Your voice is always needed and welcomed.

Bad actors are almost never worth engagement. Simply by virtue that their bad acting is done consciously. It's like trying to ask for a sincere conversation with a narcissist/psychopath.
