40:23 The AI in gen 1 picks its action/move AFTER the player makes their move. So, in this case, it saw that you switched out to Haunter BEFORE it chose which move to use - causing it to choose Hydro Pump instead of Quick Attack.
@cameronl1859: To be fair, in solo challenges Scott obviously isn't switching Pokémon and so he's not as used how the Gen-1 AI quirks apply in that specific situation.
Oh my god! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my name on your poliwag! That made me so happy! 😍 Thank you so much, Scott, for giving us weekly content to watch. My work days are so much better because of you 😊 P.S: I think this nuzlocke series is a great idea. It's cool to see you making decisions in a different context that solo challenges, and it gives us a fresh experience as well. Keep it up, you're doing great!
Can we get applause for Scott?! Because he’s the best poketuber out there. The amount of time and effort he puts in his videos to entertain us. Thank you Scott keep it up 👏👏
I love Scott but his choices lately have been very... suspect. I was literally screaming at this video every time he wasn't at the level cap. So basically the entire half. Easily could have been deathless. But I guess for me the added challenge doesn't make the video more interesting. I personally would have loved to see Scott absolutely dominate a deathless run with ease. But that's just me. And his over lays are getting excessive. I barely look at them and when I do it's usually to see what the base stats are but they're not listed, just the dynamic in game stats. They kinda take some guess work out and, assuming he can see the dynamic stats, change the way he would play considering in game that information isn't available. And also why hack in rare candies if you aren't gonna even hit level caps lol
I really like that you don't calc every battle and didn't always go to the level cap. It feels like a lot of nuzlocke videos these days are more showing off solved puzzles than adventures. My favorite play throughs of Pokemon games are Marriland's Diamon playthrough from when that was new and he made it feel like an anime, slowly building an interesting team of six, and ProJared's FireRed nuzlocke where he hardly knew anything about the game, made goofy names and then made personalities based on those names.
I 100 % understand your choose with the rare candies, but for me the training is probably the part where I'm losing the most Pokemons. Either because I get critted and OHKd by a stay Rattata or simply that I level up to few times because the training is a pain so I'm underleveled.
On top of that, economizing the training is, for me, part of the joy of Nuzlockes. Gen 1 is a broken mess and with a team of properly leveled (to reach the story trainer's Ace) the game isn't that much of a challenge. But choosing not to train and using the trainers and wild Pokemon you get along the way, is where the fun is for me and makes it into a grueling survival game at times.
Best explanation to the rare candy thing. I’ve always said it’s a bit of a disadvantage but the recording time is clutch to drop. More nuzlockes please :)
Wow I gotta say this is THE best overlay I have ever seen for any pokemon video, the stats and moves of not only your pokemon but your opponents is really cool to see
Scott, I have a bunch of feedback for you and hope it helps with future nuzlockes: 1. NEVER get cocky in a nuzlocke. Thinking you can take risks will cost lifes. Always go to at least near the level cap. 2. Never rely on inaccurate moves. In solo challenges you can reset until your strategy works, but in a nuzlocke it means death and unnecessary risks. Hypnosis, Sing and the likes are to be avoided. The lowest accuracy you should use is the 75% of sleep powder. Throw everything below that into the trash. 3. Play around the crit. Even your own. Lets face it: in this challenge you knew it was coming. I do like myself an interesting nuzlocke, but not at the cost of the mons. Losses caused by cockyness or poor preparation only stirr exasperation directed at the trainer in me. You can do better and - even more important - you can treat your pokemon better, since they are the reason why nuzlockes exist. Its not about "oh, these IVs are soo bad", its about "yeah, he is weak. But together, we WILL win this!" Love your team, scott. These specific mons only live once.
Idk, the loss of a Mon and the struggle is more entertaining to me than a clean sweep. I get your opinions though. And this is a "competition" channel, so I understand wanting to strive for excellence in your approach, not a C tier run
@@Spudmay you get me wrong. I do not like when someone plays bad ON PURPOSE. It doesnt do the Pokemon justice. Not everything has to be a setup one shot sweep. Its about getting the most out of the pokemon you have. I would rather ban boxing pokemon to get another team (like he did with mankey) so he has to work with what he has right then and there.
@@grundgutigertv6170 That bit about banning boxing pokemon just seems kinda silly when you can only get 1 mon per area. Selection is already restricted enough. That aside, I'd have thought he'd have learned his lesson when things went south so easily the first time he strayed too far from the level cap
So interesting fact about Pokemon Generation 1 games. The Opponent does not select their move at the same time as you do as in all later generations. Instead, they choose their move, when its their turn to act in the speed order. This means if you Swap out, they will act. This is also interesting in the case of pokemon who's only psychich type move is Hypnosis. The AI knows not to use Hypnosis vs a sleeping pokemon. However it will prioritize using hypnosis for super effective pokemon. As such, if you had a poison type out, and used the Pokeflute every turn while being faster than the hypnosis user, you wake your pokemon up, it now decides since your awake, and hypnosis is super effective, to spam hypnosis. As such, when you were versing Vaporeon in the champion battle, when you swapped your Poliwhirl out, it acted before the rival, so when Haunter hit the field, it then chose its move based on haunter being on the field. TL;DR, the AI cheats.
Overlay is so good. It’s what puts you on top. Love it. I think it would be more fun if you had no repeat moves - and you could extend that further for sleep moves saying only one could have either sleep powder or hypnosis at a time.
One of the first comments I made on your channel was to say I liked your nuzzlocke but continue your normal content. But I actually love to see you doing other stuff now tbh
One way I found to make HC nuzlockes more fun is no training on wild Pokémon. Makes you have to decide which Pokémon are worth leveling in battle, growth rate, and when to battle trainers / save for leveling on later. Also when you get to the e4, you definitely won’t be able to have 6 Pokémon who are leveled enough. Fun option
I generally don't enjoy nuzlocks, but of course my favorite poketuber manages to make it fun to watch. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos! I love seeing all the extra information your overlay provides. Keep up the amazing work!
I have thoughts for Scott! 1. You're right about the rules. There are a lot of differences between a true Nuzlocke and the "hardcore nuzlocke": a true nuzlocke starts at Power On and doesn't allow glitch candies, and you can't manipulate encounters because there's no duplicates clause. I think hardcore nuzlocke runs make better content. 2. You killed me when you taught nido body slam two levels before it learns it naturally 😂 I absolutely LOVE the raw Scott! Your recent stuff is so polished on the final playthrough, which I do love, but it's nice to get the mistakes that we all fell in love with. 3. Your proposed rules are fun! I can't wait. 4.Idea on rare candies: How about you can use them only four times all playthrough (but as many as you want at that time). So, prior to Brock, prior to Misty, after Erika, and before the penultimate rival battle, for instance. That eliminates most grinding but allows for some drama. 3.
Not playing to the level cap really costs lives in nuzlockes, especially if you plan on doing later generations. Never get complacent because that nearly ended your run by not adhering to the level cap. While it might be more challenging, I think folks would rather you succeed than needlessly throw the run.
Standard logic for rare candies is that you can use them after you unlock the daycare. Reason being that it’s no different from depositing a Pokémon and cycling round, it just saves loads of time for everyone involved
8:25, I'm going to say with confidence that the Nidos are the definitive nuzlocke winners. You're sure to do great with Nidoqueen moving forward straight to the end game, and I am confident I wont have to come back here and edit this comment about how I'm going to have to eat these words. Edit: 31:23 - ok so that's all I need to see. Nidoqueen still around clearly she's going to sweep the rest of the league... no need to finish the video... nope, nosiree...
Tbh in gen 1 games the Nidos kind of fall off. It's tough to waste your good TMs on them IMO. I don't wanna put my tbolt or Ice beam TMs on Nidoqueen/Nidoking when I could give them gyarados. I love gen 1, but unless you put some kind of rule/limit on encounters, it's hard for every run not to just turn into Kadabra + Gyarados + Snorlax vs The World, as all three are guaranteed encounters (kadabra from the game corner).
Maybe Kadabra/Gyarados/Snorlax should be emergency encounters, like encounters saved if you have nothing left? That is, you capture them, but you leave them alone for a rainy Nuzlocke?
Dude, you are the YELLOW MASTER! You can put rules like no sleep, no TMs and level cap 30% lower than gym leader. That’s a CHALLENGE! Great video as always!
Thanks! Im doing 3 solo playthroughs in pokemon white with some pokemon. One for each difficulty Easy, Normal, and Challenge. In Easy Mode decreases the player's opponents' artificial intelligence and the level of their Pokémon. As such, battles become easier. This mode is unlocked after defeating the Champion in Pokémon White 2. In Challenge Mode increases some opponents' artificial intelligence and the level of their Pokémon. Some opponents will also have an increased number of Pokémon, as well as held items. This mode is unlocked after defeating the Champion in Pokémon Black 2
Personal preference, but I've always thought level capping to the gym leader's ace is too easy. Afterall, as players we get to have both a full team and type advantage. When I'm trying to challenge myself, I instead prefer to set a soft level cap based on the gym leader's lowest level Pokémon. I say soft cap because my rule is only that I'm limited to that level when entering the gym. Any levels I gain while fight in the gym are fair game.
Hey Scott, nice to see your version of a hardcore nuzlocke, even if this is still the very beginning. What I enjoy most about this kind of challenge is the player creating a tactic around what pokemon they have available any executing that efficiently. So to be honest seeing you getting punished for not leveling up to the cap and then having to rely on inconsistent sleep tactics to brute force through felt like you deserved it. x) I'm looking forward to your mono-type hardcore nuzlocke runs. Mono-type runs are my favorite way to casually play through older games, so it would be nice to see content like that!
Instead of a Dragon type monolocke, you can choose to go for a Dragon egg group instead? It'd give you a bit more variety to choose from and you could form a team out of it (Charizard, Arbok, Gyarados, Seadra and Dragonite... No Aerodactyl since it belongs to the Flying egg group).
I think you're overthinking the backend stuff too much. The stats and stuff is nice and really helpful with the solo runs since they are supposed to show the best possible outcomes. I dont think it's nearly as important for nuzlockes however and they might even be more interesting in a more raw format. I think maybe you should try a later generation nuzlocke without all the bells and whistles and see how people receive it.
I can't believe how underleveled you made it Scott! That was unbelievable! Another big challenge completed! Can't wait to see you proceeding to the next gens! Thanks for the fun challenge!
@@goodmanwiseman303 it's faster and doesn't have the fighting type. Fighting type in gen one was near strictly a hindrance. No good fighting moves exist, psychics are everywhere, and I'm pretty sure fighting isn't even immune to ghost in gen 1 (psychic is instead)
As far as banning certain moves go, most Nuzlockers I watch don't normally ban the sleep moves, but the Set Up moves, as they can potentially trivialize otherwise potentially challenging battles. But anyways! Loved this vid
I think when it comes to the rules section, you should include the additional rules you’re using as well like Species Clause and Unlimited Rare Candies. I do like even with unlimited Rare Candies, you still wanted to make it a challenge at certain points by not being at the level cap. If you’re going to try to be at the level caps at future runs, I recommend checking learnsets of mons particularly level-up sets since that can help you with giving mons their best sets or making sure to keep a mon unevolved to get a powerful move faster. Speaking of moves, I think it’s also important for to try and save your best moves until it’s Elite 4 or at an important battle since you don’t want to risk losing it to a death. I see that you didn’t use gift mons or in-game trade mons, but I think they’re fine as long as they’re counted as an encounter in the area. All in all, I can’t wait to see what this Nuzlocke series is going to be like in future videos.
Great to see a new scottlocke. These games might be getting too easy for you! Game knowledge is the best nuzlocke skill you can have and you got it down to a science. Wish people would do more gen 1 nuzlockes, these games are just so charming and nostalgic.
Seeing you having to play differently from your challenges and having to deal with different problems and overcome them and finish was a lot of fun to watch
i was on my toes for the end, oh my god. fantastic content from you,, a nuzlocke done with your level of knowledge is really cool to see especially with the detailed information you give in your narration. i'd love to see you speedrun regular nuzlockes in general, trying to improve your time by focusing on routing but which areas have the best pokémon just like you did here but overall more focused on time but i understand that it would take an absurd amount of time.
Here's an idea for future nuzlocks: When I play pokemon i generally do what I call "no-grind" runs, basically I don't allow myself to gain any exp () from limiteless sources (so no rebatteling trainers or knocking out wild encounters, also no daycare or limitless rare candy). [I also play on set mode without items and have an unwritten rule to use a "sensible number of pokemon" for the part of the game I'm in, so no concentrating all the exp into 2-3 mons] I did do a no-grind nuzlock in pokemon x/y and in oras. It plays quite differently form a hardcore nuzlock: 1st loosing a pokemon is even more devestating because you also loos all the exp you invested in that pokemon 2nd you basically never train more than 6 pokemon unless you loose one and have to replace it 3rd It might sometimes be necessary to use a pokemon in battles even if its not optimal because you need it to gain exp for a later challenge 4rd the optimal strat is to battle every trainer, so it ends up being more time consuming than if you use rare candy but less timeconsuming than a hardcore nuzlock without rare candy. disclaimer: I never played the original gen 1 games so I have no idea how hard or eazy that would be.
Wouldn't you be able to get bulbasaur and squirtal too? In most runs, I think you can get an encounter in a city specifically for eevee. I'd say charmander too, but then you couldn't get the bellsprout, who was necessary.
Only difference i would make with your Weepingbell/Victreebell is waiting to evolve until lv 42 when it learns Razor leaf. Stone evolutions unfortunately do not have level up moves any longer and Razor leaf is one of the best grass moves in gen 1. Another reason i say this is because you could give Mega drain to a different pokemon to improve your type coverage overall. Also id have switch trained abra and let it learn psychic naturally, then give the psychic tm to maybe Butterfree. But to each his/her own lol. Great video and good luck in future nuzlockes.
Today I finish my Pokémon Red Nuzlocke while watching your video Scott, thanks for teaching me all the in and outs of the first Gen, I beated the League without anyone fainting.
I really like nuzlockes, they got me into pokétube. It was very entertaining! And brutal in the league :') I haven't been watching regularly due to personal circumstances but I will catch up eventually! Keep it up Scott!
Thank you so much scott! I havent been able to watch a nuzlocke like this in a long time...where pidgeys are flying normal type...or where electric is super effective vs flying types. Or where pikachu has its normal base stats. Im not evem kidding. Poketubers nowadays mess with so much of the game its barely a pokemon game anymore with extreme randomizers.
Hi SCOTT. I'm watching your content from some time ago and im really gratefull for you work. I'm a little bit older than you but for me my 1st adventure with pokemon was also with yellow. Its awesome how easy this game became because of your experience. Keep up with awesome creations for the best poketuber in my opinion. Please do more nuzlocks cause they are amazing with your peeformance. YT support from my side for you cause i always forget to like of comment your new videos :)
Love when my favourite poketuber does a nuzlocke! To answer your question, yes banning sleep in gen 1 makes nuzlockes more fun! Please do it if you like the challenge
I like solo challenges, but I actually like nuzlockes better so I’m quite happy to see this! Same with when Jrose did some nuzlockes. Every nuzlocke video on TH-cam seems to be a monotype run, never just a regular one! I like the regular ones like this.
I love watching your content man and am looking forward to more nuzlockes. You should do a generation locke where you play through each generation after beating the previous. Can also make it more difficult by ruling out any Pokemon you used to beat the Champion in the previous generation. Keep up the good work, again, love your content.
Electric would likely be impossible under hardcore Nuzlocke rules as the only one you have until Brock is Pikachu and you're limited to a level cap of 12.
Just a few tips: 1) repel strategies can be used to help select specific pokemon in conjunction with dupe clause. 2) game corner Pokemon 3) Kanto starters? You could have added them. Fishing spots in towns can give you a Magikarp (old rod) or Krabby/Poliwag/Goldeen (good/super rod). 4) having your pokemon at level cap will allow them to level up during a gym battle giving you a slight edge. 5) sacrificial pokemon can help keep you in the battle. Especially if you have pokemon that share the same function. 6) tbh I would ban set up moves and status effects. Especially in gen one. 7) for the E4, your level cap can be Lorelei's highest level Pokemon. Once you start the E4, you can go past that level. 8) substitute and mimic are great additions. 9) Hitmonlee baby. Let's go. 10) you can restrict stone evolutions until certain checkpoints. Say - Nidoqueen can't stone evolve until > 4th gym. 11) if gen 1 is still too easy, do it deathless. A single death = reset.
So glad to have Scott on the Nuzlockes! Gen 1 content for Nuzlockes is not at a premium but Scott has nailed this! Also big props to using the rare candies, some TH-camrs like to pretend it’s this big deal but it’s simple - do your viewers want to watch you grind for 45minutes to get all your team to level 12 for brock? no we don’t, so why should you have to do it 😂 keep up the amazing content Scott!
Apparently some people do want me to grind. But it does seem like this is a small minority. Mostly I really want to play nuzlockes, and grinding prevents me from doing that if I want to maintain my schedule (and actually have some free time here and there).
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon - Definitely a minority then! I’m not sure why it bothers some people so much, yes you miss out the potential of being ko’d by random wild Pokémon but you lose out on that stat gain that battling gives you instead of rare candies so the gym battles and elite 4 are harder as you lose out on the boosts by using them! Whenever I see people criticising rare candy use they never seem to mention that bit haha Think I speak for the majority when I say stick to this way and we hopefully get to see many more in future!
About that Koga battle: the reason Venomoth used Leech Life the moment Lucky came in is because, in Gen 1, the AI waits to choose its action after you. The computer knew you were sending out a Psychic-type, and knew to use the super-effective move there. Still, you probably would've lived a non-critical. Just bad luck,
I love watching your videos. The amount of time and effort you put into these really shows. Your doing a fantastic job and this channel is easily one of my favorites!
Really like the Nuzlocke. The addition of the DVs in the overlay is great. It's also pretty interesting to see how you learn new things that aren't important in solo challenges. Like the AI chooses a move after yours including a switch (which obv. don't happen in a solo challenge). So Koga's good AI would've always gone for the Bug-Move against Kadabra after your switch.^^ I agree that you should ban sleep for the Nuzlockes because it's too strong. On the other hand it nerves grass type a lot. Also it would be possible to ban all boosting moves, because... yeah they are even stronger. But I don't know, if I would do it. They are just so much fun in Gen 1.^^
Its fascinating watching a solo run specialist take on a nuzlocke ! Its two totally different skill sets and both dont really lend well to the other. Good job though and I can't wait to see you improve
My first nuzlocke many years ago was in sapphire, and I hadn't heard of the species clause, so I just played without it. I got wurmples for all four routes you can get it on. Species clause is a must.
Hey Scott, I waited so long for the second nuzlocke and here you are entertaining as ever and with an awesome overlay as always. The addition to your rules sound quite good but I think what makes a nuzlocke interesting is a somehow competent AI. So I don‘t know if rom hacks are an option but maybe there are some gen 1 rom hacks with a decent AI. But anyway in later generations this problem does not exist. But I have to point out that this is a complain on a very high level. Because your content is awesome and you are awesome and I will watch every video anyway. :)
This was a fun watch! I find rare candies hard to gauge. In a way, I feel they lessen the interesting management aspect of the game - do I give this mon that will roll through the next gym exp or that weaker one that needs levels? But for efficient video creation they are probably necessary - and the managing of exp is something that's not necessarily an interesting factor for a video like this. I was playing around with the idea of going by how much exp a route has, just looking at the trainers (and maybe the average number of encounters in unavoidable tiles). Because, as someone who regularly replays gen1 with full teams, yeah, it can get too easy if appropriately leveled. The tensest fights are always the ones that you're underleveled for in this generation, at least for me. I love how Poliwhirl made it to the end AND saved the run. It's a low-key favorite of mine, largely because I got a bunch of Poliwhirl plushies as a kid that I grew attached to. They are kinda ugly beanbaggy ones, extremely off-model but I love them. Because of this I actually rarely evolve my Poliwhirl when I train one, so I never realized Poliwrath loses speed on evolution. Poliwhirl always felt very fast for a middle stage, but I never paid much attention to its buff dad.
That was an intense nuzlocke! I actually enjoyed the nostalgia of yellow version. I think it would be fun to have a run dedicated to avoiding sleep/status/setup moves. I actually likes the hypnosis
Setting rules for Nuzlocking is tough. Even when you start making additional rules - "no sleep", "no stat-raising moves", exceptions creep up that still Level caps are another thing that can make it tough; raising everything to level 50 for those gyms isn't probably intended for a fair fight, but knowing where to draw the line fairly isn't easy, either. (The level difference between you and the Venomoth shows that)
This was a great change of pace Scott! And maybe if Bruno keeps killing you, you can promote him from a hiker. Remember kids: hikers have feelings too, and names. LOL. But Bruno is more of a martial artist than a hiker lol.
An option to make the game more difficult is a no STAB run. So you're not allowed to use any moves of your pokémon's type. If you even ban setup moves (which technically don't get an attack boost but might be of the pokémon's type) it makes for an interesting challenge because your mons might become unviable or you have to use mons you've never used before etc. I recently finished platinum like this and lost a ruby run, but I can only recommend it.
Hey Scott! Huge fan! My thought would be stay with the level cap or like 5 levels below. To make it little harder, I agree with no sleep. I would also ban set up moves. Then you can’t badge boost and sweep. Just my thought! Keep up the great work!
Here is a rule suggestion for rare candy use: only use them to get to 1 level under the cap (or set cap to opponent's 2nd highest level) and only right before the battling leader/rival. Newly caught pokemon can be immediately leveled to the previous cap. This might make the trainers between gyms at least a little more interesting. Also what ive seen other nuzlocks do for elite 4 is set cap to lance's ace (before battling Lorelei) and level naturally before champ.
I am happy to see more Nuzlockes and I like the video overlay you settled on. It looks good and conveys most of the right information imo. In general I think the Nuzlocke format has more to offer than using a single mon to solo the whole game. I think you are already thinking correctly that trying to figure out the level pacing is gonna be key. (e.g. when to cap level, when to stop using rare candy, etc). Probably best at this point to just do more runs and slightly tweak it based on what you feel is challenging enough. I think the ideal run (from a viewers perspective) has a few emotional Pokemon feints. If the difficulty ends up on the higher end you could string and narrate together multiple smaller/failed runs into one video that would probably also be entertaining to watch. For example if I don't actually know if a run succeeds when I start the video I'll probably be more inclined to watch it. Also I would consider removing the dupes clause (it may be fun to watch a where you get stuck with a lot of dupes)
an important part of the nuzlocke format, that is often forgotten, is an engaging and investing story created by the higher stakes, and by allowing yourself and us to get attached to each pokemon, since they are carefully nicknamed and could be permanently 'gone'. so just chucking in your pokes underlevelled for a bit more 'challenge' and losing them because of this, sort of tells a bad story and arguably misses the point of what can potentially make nuzlocking more interesting than just another challenge run. i think what we want to see is you giving it the best shot possible to get all your little guys through this very challenging way of playing pokemon. and while ultimately it may not challenging to defeat each game under hardcore nuzlocke rules (heavily depending on what game you are playing and what pokes you get of course), but certainly challenging in the sense of getting into the mindset of not wanting to lose any of your team at all (unless you *absolutely* have to).
First time watching your vids, love your attention to detail and trying to to best by viewers. I would suggest maybe taking out boosting moves as opposed to sleep but maybe both would be cool too. Nice vid bro
21:18 the Nuzlockers greatest enemy: Hubris! Not too surprised Scott never got Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and Eevee since their evolutions are very good in Gen 1.
40:23 The AI in gen 1 picks its action/move AFTER the player makes their move. So, in this case, it saw that you switched out to Haunter BEFORE it chose which move to use - causing it to choose Hydro Pump instead of Quick Attack.
Yup this happened repeatedly in the run. :)
Came down here to comment exactly this. This could help to know in a lot of future runs
Yep, AI in gen 1 is a dirty cheater. This is why the AI is also able to use full heals and such on the same turn as you paralyze them for instance.
Same reason why AI can use a Potion right after your attack.
Thank you so much, Scott, for giving us weekly content to watch. My work days are so much better because of you 😊
P.S: I think this nuzlocke series is a great idea. It's cool to see you making decisions in a different context that solo challenges, and it gives us a fresh experience as well. Keep it up, you're doing great!
Can we get applause for Scott?! Because he’s the best poketuber out there. The amount of time and effort he puts in his videos to entertain us. Thank you Scott keep it up 👏👏
By far! No competition.
Yeah he left jrose behind way back
And still jrose is pretty good! That's how GOATED Scott is.
They kinda take some guess work out and, assuming he can see the dynamic stats, change the way he would play considering in game that information isn't available. And also why hack in rare candies if you aren't gonna even hit level caps lol
He's better than that Mah dry bread
Your dedication to Yellow is admirable, it must truly be your favorite game of all time.
It is
hehe 69
Also this overlay is incredible, I can't get enough of your runs
Scott and a Nuzlocke this is happiness.
I’m glad!
Nidoqueen, stay DETERMINED!
She Is the storm that is approaching...

With more stat exp it makes it easier overall
Best explanation to the rare candy thing. I’ve always said it’s a bit of a disadvantage but the recording time is clutch to drop. More nuzlockes please :)
The most nerve-wracking finale to a Scott video I've seen. Well done!
Wow I gotta say this is THE best overlay I have ever seen for any pokemon video, the stats and moves of not only your pokemon but your opponents is really cool to see
It’s very cool seeing a hardcore Nuzlocke from you! The layout was especially cool, the way it adapted to show off your team members.
If scott had a sub for every time Poliwhirl crit when it shouldn't, he would have a diamond play button.
If he had a sub for every time hypnosis missed, he'd already be Mr. Beast by now lmao
Scott, I have a bunch of feedback for you and hope it helps with future nuzlockes:
But together, we WILL win this!"
Love your team, scott.
Come for the Nuzlocke, stay for the catharsis and emotional pain of watching your darlings die one by one.
Fun option
That sounds quite challenging. Kudos to you!
I generally don't enjoy nuzlocks, but of course my favorite poketuber manages to make it fun to watch. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos! I love seeing all the extra information your overlay provides. Keep up the amazing work!
Scott's doing a pokemon yellow playthrough and 4 out of 6 of his pokemon have moves that make the opponent go to sleep? I never would have guessed.
Agreed. I learnt my lesson!
sort of the same thing with trade evolutions. give yourself every advantage that the base game would have given you!
Standard logic for rare candies is that you can use them after you unlock the daycare. Reason being that it’s no different from depositing a Pokémon and cycling round, it just saves loads of time for everyone involved
Oh I like that rule and logic a lot!
These are the thoughts I was thinking as well. Sadness.
Really funny because he lost it in the first league fight.
What a pathetic pokemon.
Now, the most important attacks in this challenge will obviously be self-destruct and explosion
Challenge Mode has a problem, though, since a Pokemon's stats aren't raised appropriately to match the new level.
So to be honest seeing you getting punished for not leveling up to the cap and then having to rely on inconsistent sleep tactics to brute force through felt like you deserved it. x)
I'm looking forward to your mono-type hardcore nuzlocke runs. Mono-type runs are my favorite way to casually play through older games, so it would be nice to see content like that!
Although excited, yellow is extremely simple for hc nuzlockes.
Yay, more nuzlocke! And such a snazzy overlay! Love it! Great job, Scott!
Good idea!
This further proves that Aerodactyl was basically a Normal/Flying type that has been fossilized.
New sub here. I really like your thorough commentary and the overlays you add. Adds a good amount of detail to what you are doing
24:24
I’m still waiting for that juicy Poliwhirl solo challenge to completely obliterate Poliwrath 🤓
Imagine a versus video between poliwhirl and poliwrath XD
Why does poliwhirl win? Better growth rate?
@@goodmanwiseman303 Amnesia
@@goodmanwiseman303 Better typing (gen 1 fighting types suck so much ass)
@@goodmanwiseman303 it's faster and doesn't have the fighting type. Fighting type in gen one was near strictly a hindrance. No good fighting moves exist, psychics are everywhere, and I'm pretty sure fighting isn't even immune to ghost in gen 1 (psychic is instead)
thank you for putting so much effort into these videos, it’s crazy how much time I spend listening to your voice haha
Should be interesting!
(The rules for a solo challenge are still posted in the description)
Awesome video! I have never done a nuzzlock challenge before, but you have inspired me. Thanks for keeping Gen 1 games alive.
Nooooo, drop it NOOOOOOWWW 😭😭
Great to see a new scottlocke. These games might be getting too easy for you! Game knowledge is the best nuzlocke skill you can have and you got it down to a science. Wish people would do more gen 1 nuzlockes, these games are just so charming and nostalgic.
Seeing you having to play differently from your challenges and having to deal with different problems and overcome them and finish was a lot of fun to watch
After watching, I love the video, and I must say I love the changes you put up in the "post mortem"
Love all your solo runs! They helped reignite my love of these games, and it's really awesome to see you tackle other styles too!!
i was on my toes for the end, oh my god. fantastic content from you,, a nuzlocke done with your level of knowledge is really cool to see especially with the detailed information you give in your narration. i'd love to see you speedrun regular nuzlockes in general, trying to improve your time by focusing on routing but which areas have the best pokémon just like you did here but overall more focused on time but i understand that it would take an absurd amount of time.
Here's an idea for future nuzlocks:
When I play pokemon i generally do what I call "no-grind" runs, basically I don't allow myself to gain any exp () from limiteless sources (so no rebatteling trainers or knocking out wild encounters, also no daycare or limitless rare candy). [I also play on set mode without items and have an unwritten rule to use a "sensible number of pokemon" for the part of the game I'm in, so no concentrating all the exp into 2-3 mons]
I did do a no-grind nuzlock in pokemon x/y and in oras.
It plays quite differently form a hardcore nuzlock:
1st loosing a pokemon is even more devestating because you also loos all the exp you invested in that pokemon
2nd you basically never train more than 6 pokemon unless you loose one and have to replace it
3rd It might sometimes be necessary to use a pokemon in battles even if its not optimal because you need it to gain exp for a later challenge
4rd the optimal strat is to battle every trainer, so it ends up being more time consuming than if you use rare candy but less timeconsuming than a hardcore nuzlock without rare candy.
disclaimer: I never played the original gen 1 games so I have no idea how hard or eazy that would be.
Wouldn't you be able to get bulbasaur and squirtal too? In most runs, I think you can get an encounter in a city specifically for eevee. I'd say charmander too, but then you couldn't get the bellsprout, who was necessary.
Rules in description - I banned gift Pokémon. Should have mentioned it.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon gotcha! Sorry, I hadn't noticed...
Love the content Scott
Nuz locks are rough and we appreciate all the work you do. Keep up the good work
Would absolutely love to see an Emerald nuzlocke! I love your content, keep it up, Scott!
"Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer." RIP Trio and unLucky.
i love the amount of effort and detail you put in your layout
Only difference i would make with your Weepingbell/Victreebell is waiting to evolve until lv 42 when it learns Razor leaf. Stone evolutions unfortunately do not have level up moves any longer and Razor leaf is one of the best grass moves in gen 1. Another reason i say this is because you could give Mega drain to a different pokemon to improve your type coverage overall. Also id have switch trained abra and let it learn psychic naturally, then give the psychic tm to maybe Butterfree. But to each his/her own lol. Great video and good luck in future nuzlockes.
so weird to see you use a team haha. But this is a cool video, and your knowledge of the game from doing all the solo's clearly shows up. Love it man!
Today I finish my Pokémon Red Nuzlocke while watching your video Scott, thanks for teaching me all the in and outs of the first Gen, I beated the League without anyone fainting.
32:20 - We have a non-slacking Bruno in the house today too. This is amazing!
I really like nuzlockes, they got me into pokétube. It was very entertaining! And brutal in the league :')
I haven't been watching regularly due to personal circumstances but I will catch up eventually! Keep it up Scott!
Welcome back! Have fun catching up!
POLIWHIRL SOLO CHALLENGE WHEN!? My boy showed he’s the greatest Pokémon!
Jimmy butler jr
Thank you so much scott! I havent been able to watch a nuzlocke like this in a long time...where pidgeys are flying normal type...or where electric is super effective vs flying types. Or where pikachu has its normal base stats. Im not evem kidding. Poketubers nowadays mess with so much of the game its barely a pokemon game anymore with extreme randomizers.
Aww yeah! Now randomize it! But olease not an extreme randomizer like i stated above ughh
Thanks so much! More Nuzlockes to come!
Well done Scott. Fantastic video as always and very informative. Not everyone will know, how in depth and broken Gen 1 can be tbf.
Badge boosts just on the base level make a difference later game.
Woohooo more Nuzlockes! That last part was tense! With your layout it looks amazing and I like the rival with the level cap
I’m very happy this video exists. Thanks for being a kind human being :)
I want to do some type locks too. But I also want to do theme locks like my Halloween nuzlocke. I have a few other ideas too!
I love watching your content man and am looking forward to more nuzlockes. You should do a generation locke where you play through each generation after beating the previous. Can also make it more difficult by ruling out any Pokemon you used to beat the Champion in the previous generation. Keep up the good work, again, love your content.
Fun idea!
I honestly like that you are making things more difficult on yourself. The mono type runs sound like fun, hope you go that direction!
Electric would likely be impossible under hardcore Nuzlocke rules as the only one you have until Brock is Pikachu and you're limited to a level cap of 12.
We’ll have to see!
Just a few tips:
1) repel strategies can be used to help select specific pokemon in conjunction with dupe clause.
2) game corner Pokemon
3) Kanto starters?
Whenever I see people criticising rare candy use they never seem to mention that bit haha
Think I speak for the majority when I say stick to this way and we hopefully get to see many more in future!
Just bad luck,
I remember the first nuzlocke, i been excited for a second one ever since. TODAYS THE DAY!
So Koga's good AI would've always gone for the Bug-Move against Kadabra after your switch.^^
I agree that you should ban sleep for the Nuzlockes because it's too strong.
I actually likes the hypnosis
what a great run! the elite four and champion had me on the edge of my seat! i really can't wait to see more of these!
Setting rules for Nuzlocking is tough. Even when you start making additional rules - "no sleep", "no stat-raising moves", exceptions creep up that still
Level caps are another thing that can make it tough; raising everything to level 50 for those gyms isn't probably intended for a fair fight, but knowing where to draw the line fairly isn't easy, either.
I really like your editing style 😊
Also I would consider removing the dupes clause (it may be fun to watch a where you get stuck with a lot of dupes)
also, goes without saying, but I will always prefer watching generations 1-3 just due to my age
Love, love that expression on Nidoqueen. "I didn't hear no bell!"
an important part of the nuzlocke format, that is often forgotten, is an engaging and investing story created by the higher stakes, and by allowing yourself and us to get attached to each pokemon, since they are carefully nicknamed and could be permanently 'gone'. so just chucking in your pokes underlevelled for a bit more 'challenge' and losing them because of this, sort of tells a bad story and arguably misses the point of what can potentially make nuzlocking more interesting than just another challenge run. i think what we want to see is you giving it the best shot possible to get all your little guys through this very challenging way of playing pokemon. and while ultimately it may not challenging to defeat each game under hardcore nuzlocke rules (heavily depending on what game you are playing and what pokes you get of course), but certainly challenging in the sense of getting into the mindset of not wanting to lose any of your team at all (unless you *absolutely* have to).
Favorite solo run poketuber with my favorite pokemon gamemode? Hell yeah
I was on the fence about gift encounters for this run. So I decided not to take any. Added it as a rule in the description.
Great video! You did an amzing job with just Poiliwhirl and Haunter. I love the Pokemon games, but not sure if I would like a Nuzlocke.
Always fun to see Scott battle his own hubris (the true final boss of any challenge runner) in these but squeak out the win.
Hahaha yeah. Luckily I didn’t have to pay for this lesson with a failure. Won’t be getting over confident in a nuzlocke in the future.
Amazing start, I think mono types make hardcore nuzlocke much more challenging and fun
Yooooo I just completed my own nuzlocke of yellow recently! It will be awesome to see how yours plays out!
That was exhilarating! Great job Scott!
So excited to watch this when I have an hour free! After all these solo runs, a nuzlocke will be a treat.
YES!!! Thank you, Scott! I love Nuzlockes, and you are my favourite gamer on TH-cam😅
I love Nuzlockes too! So happy I finally got another one on my channel.
