      Jeddah: "Oh damn, this is expensive. We're out."
      Dubai: "Now there's only us left in the race! We are guaranteed to win! ... wait, we already have the winning tower, and this IS damn expensive! Y'know what, Burj Khalifa is tall enough as it is."
      Result: Two half-built towers, billions spent, status quo unchanged.

    • @peach495
      @peach495 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      @Kwistenbiebel200
      Wrong. It's cantilevered from Building A out. A cantilever doesn't reference how it's attached. The cantilever references the structure jutting out from a structure without support on the end of the portion jutting out. This is a cantilever structure.

      No it doesn't. the video is clear from the beginning how it attaches to the two buildings.
      If it cantilevers out from building A 1 foot, it's a cantilever.

      @Kwistenbiebel200 Thank you! Thats what I thought at first after having seen the video. The title got me thinking that this was going to be the longest cantilever but it was disappointing when a short span of the other end was the only cantilever. The rest is just simply supported. This is pretty much making it an illusion of a long cantilever.

I mean 90% of the people you'll see around are SE Asian workers from Bangladesh, Philippines and so on. You can't walk outside during the day for like 9 months / year because of the high temperatures so you're just jumping from the office, to the mall, to the hotel and gym. That's about it.

    The CCTV Building has a 75m cantilever according to Google. I saw one source that said this is 66m. The ratio of the cantilever is 5.5 diamonds long to 1.5 diamonds high. It looks to be around 5 stories high. 66m would make sense if the typical floor to floor height was 3.6m, a reasonable figure. Even if this was 4m the cantilever would be 73.3m, less than the CCTV Building. I'm dubious, but we'll see the official figure when the tower is opened I suppose.

    Dubai is an exercise in architectural vacuity. It's not a city, it's a simulacrum ; a collection of architectural parts that only exist because someone has the money to acquire them. A real city is something that grows organically from the natural needs of its culture and activity. Dubai in contrast is like a theme park ; basically Las Vegas without the edge.

      It's so interesting to see the city planning of Dubai. Or rather, the total lack of it. The city is a giant patchwork of entirely separate developments, each designed not to connect to its neighbours in any meaningful way, with one developer overseeing everything inside its borders. Often, the developments are separated by huge highways that create near-impassable barriers. The city has grown enormously, but still the old town remains the only place that resembles a downtown area. There is no organic growth at all, just a checkerboard of entirely separate masterplans. It seems somehow even worse than US city planning, which says a lot.
