As a guy from Hradec Králové (in german Königgrätz), I'm very happy that my city is a part of history. And now a bit of history: The Königgrätz March, is one of the most famous German military marches, composed in 1866 by Johann Gottfried Piefke in commemoration of the Battle of Königgrätz, the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War, in which the Kingdom of Prussia defeated the Austrian Empire. The Battle of Königgrätz (or Sadowa) was the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War in which the Kingdom of Prussia defeated the Austrian Empire. It took place near Königgrätz (Czech: Hradec Králové) and Sadowa (Sadová) in Bohemia on 3 July 1866. The heavily outnumbered Prussian infantry used their superior training and tactical doctrine and the Dreyse needle gun to win the battle and the entire war at Königgrätz on their own. Prussian artillery was ineffective and almost all of the fighting on the Prussian side was done by the First Army under Prince Friedrich Karl and one division from the Second Army. The Prussian 7th Infantry Division and 1st Guards Infantry Division attacked and destroyed 38 out of 49 infantry battalions of four Austrian corps at the Swiepwald and Chlum at the center of the battlefield, deciding the outcome of the struggle and forcing an Austrian retreat at 15:00, before any Prussian reinforcements could even seriously engage the Austrian flanks. Source: Wikipedia
Kings and Generals has a fantastic video on this. To add on, the significance of the Dreyse Needle Gun is that it is a single-shot breech-loader, while the Austrians were still using their rifle-muskets, therefore resulting in more firepower despite the two sides having approximately the same amount of men.
Therefore it is weird that this march is said to had been Hitler's favourite.... as he was Austrian.... maybe it was just the tune. But the march was played often in the Third Reich and maybe that is why MY grandfather also called it his favourite march, after he served as a soldier as a young man. So it has to be the music ;) Which is partly alike to the Hohenfriedberger March. Seems to be recycled here somehow, doesn't it?
It's interesting how it incorporates the Hohenfriedberger marsh in it as well. Which is actually my favorite piece of German military music. How much of a geek am I that I actually HAVE a favorite piece of German military music and I'm not even close to being German...
It's important to remember that the Nazi party took many German historical things and put their unique spin on it to try and make it their own, or it was remembered by most of the world as being "Nazi" when in fact it already existed long before the Nazis came to power. This song is one of them. Also, the out stretched right arm, with extended hand, with a stated, "Heil," and the goose step style of marching, is not from the Nazis. Most of the world thinks it is solely Nazi, but in reality both of those things were a part of German culture or military before the Nazis were in power. But the Nazis made them famous.
It's one of the big reasons I hate the Nazis (apart from the big bad that they did), and the people who determined what they would be remembered for when they were gone. Goose step was implemented into the Prussian army by Frederick the Great, to better allow regiments to remain in line while marching, but it wasn't the dramatic flaring of legs that the word brings to mind today. Instead, it was the careful timing of steps that was common across the entire army, so that regiments wouldn't march faster or slower than their fellows. This was very quickly adopted by many other armies and its resulting variations are used across the world today. Prussian military marches are fantastic, and the last thing that should be viewed as inherently Nazi just because Bubba watched Indiana Jones a few times. Yes they used the marches, but who wouldn't? They're pretty great. Even the modern Bundeswehr uses a couple of them, mixed with some of their own. The only swastika, in my opinion, that should be represented as "Nazi" is the four arm, inverted, bold swastika on a white circular field with a red background, otherwise known as the exact one they used, since other swastikas have been symbols for various *positive* things from peace to good luck all around the world and for thousands of years. (I've only seen the 4-arm bold one used by the nazis, so idk if that one is their invention or not. Given their track record with inventing symbols, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not theirs.) Elder Futhark is a writing system that was devised over a thousand years ago by people who used it exactly like you and I are using the Latin alphabet right now. Banning it because a bad people used a handful of said runes on their helmets cause they look cool is plain stupid.
Did you know, this March has actually a Meaning? It is said the composer Johann Gottfried Piefke has written the first draft of the march on the Battlefield itself (Battle of Königgrätz) 0:00 - 0:09 Lockmarsch 0:10 - 0:45 The undecisive battle between the prussian 1th Army and the Austrians 0:46 - 1:02 The Arrival of the prussian 2nd Army under Command of Crownprince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prusia 1:03 - 1:19 The Battle continues... 1:20 - 2:40 Victory! - (The Hohenfriedberger Marsch was chosen, to recall older victories of King Frederick the Great over the Austrians in the 18th century)

Same but the song is Prussian
As a guy from Hradec Králové (in german Königgrätz), I'm very happy that my city is a part of history.
And now a bit of history:
The Königgrätz March, is one of the most famous German military marches, composed in 1866 by Johann Gottfried Piefke in commemoration of the Battle of Königgrätz, the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War, in which the Kingdom of Prussia defeated the Austrian Empire.

It's important to remember that the Nazi party took many German historical things and put their unique spin on it to try and make it their own, or it was remembered by most of the world as being "Nazi" when in fact it already existed long before the Nazis came to power. This song is one of them. Also, the out stretched right arm, with extended hand, with a stated, "Heil," and the goose step style of marching, is not from the Nazis. Most of the world thinks it is solely Nazi, but in reality both of those things were a part of German culture or military before the Nazis were in power. But the Nazis made them famous.
I hate nazis more than anything else
dont forget the swastika, an old symbol that symbolizes good luck
also the runes.
*Hm hm The amber room hmm* Also nazi took their own so called Eagle from rome's image
Given their track record with inventing symbols, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not theirs.)
Elder Futhark is a writing system that was devised over a thousand years ago by people who used it exactly like you and I are using the Latin alphabet right now. Banning it because a bad people used a handful of said runes on their helmets cause they look cool is plain stupid.
Yes i remember in indiana Jones 3 the movie
Did you know, this March has actually a Meaning?
It is said the composer Johann Gottfried Piefke has written the first
draft of the march on the Battlefield itself (Battle of Königgrätz)
0:00 - 0:09 Lockmarsch
0:10 - 0:45 The undecisive battle between the prussian 1th Army and the
Austrians
0:46 - 1:02 The Arrival of the prussian 2nd Army under Command of
Crownprince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prusia
1:03 - 1:19 The Battle continues...
1:20 - 2:40 Victory! - (The Hohenfriedberger Marsch was chosen, to
recall older victories of King Frederick the Great over the Austrians in
the 18th century)
