That rear unit had some type of engine problems with all that blue smoke coming from it. I wonder how much horsepower that second unit was able to put to the track.
PAR runs via coin operation… the engineer has to put his own coins in the slot for the engine to operate and if the coin unit hasn't been serviced lately, the odds are the the engine isn't going to run… I can't what to see what happens with Amtrak on the Conn River Line in 2015… 79mph…. I doubt it.
Sounds about right. Surprised Mr Mellon's little railroad is still in business. At least when the "real" MEC was still around they took care of their workers and equipment properly!
Jon Frost Pan Am Railways maintenance is so deferred at this point you’ve got duct taped holding on fuel tanks and engineers screaming out windows because the radios have not been serviced in 4 years
I thought it was one because it looked a lot like one! Another thing to is that I'm not the most familiar with Pan Am because we have no Pan Am here in the midwest.
Curious how it stalled but then they were able to get going again?? If it stalled that means not enough power and certainly not enough to get going again, unless they had wheel slip and solved that issue, is sand enough to do that? 2nd unit needs an emissions tune up
the gradients are the worst train enemy. If the load weight and the wagons weight are wrong calculated,,,it may be a problem. the reverse force may be greater than the locomotive traction force, and the result:slipping.
It's age has nothing to do with it. Obviously the owner of Pan Am isn't the brightest bulb so he doesn't really maintain these GP40s, My advice would be to update them all so they will live for decades to come.
This is quite a grade and extends from Haverhill all the way up past Plaistow I think up to East Kingston. I don't work for the railroad but I am working with some DEM files of the region as I've integrated the area into a Trainz TS12 route that extends so far from Andover to Exeter on the west and up to East Hampton on the east. This doesn't sound like much until you start grading and landscaping. That's a lot of mouse-clicks and object placement.
let me make this clear for all of us. I don't like the owner of Pan Am. In the past he fucked up GTI and then GRS. Now Pan Am is on the right track in terms of operations and profits. Becomming Pan Am Southern has greatly improved income. I think aside from the hate to the owner the railroad in general is good. I grew up looking at GTI and then GRS and now PAR. I agree with you on every point. I just don't like the owner that's my problem.
If anything Pan Am has better income than they did when they were GTI back in the mid 80s. Sharing maine lines through new York with Norfolk Southern boosts better income for them. Even now they are swapping trains with other small railroads like NECR in Mass, and those three vermont railroads. Better for Pan Am to branch out and work with other big railroads than keep to themselves if you ask me. They do keep leasing and buying SD40s aswell as some GP40-2s they should look into SD50s or SD60s.
The owner is graded "money wise". That is what his job is...maximize profits for the investors. So yes, if the railroad is better off "money wise" it means he is a good person for the job. Freight railroading in North America (US, MX, CN) is a "for profit" business. ST operates in a part of the country that has lost countless jobs and industries to other parts of the country. "Sharing Lines"??? Elaborate. Sharing with NS is a major part of their business.
Pan Am World Airways ...... degrading the name of a once great airline to locomotive slippage on a degraded railway line....... the owner bought the name and logo a few years back. SAD!!!
Better money wise. Still doesn't mean the railroad owner is a good person for the job. He has a history of not wanting to share lines with other railroads and other stupid crap.
It's almost 1% eastbound which is not huge, but the railroads consider that a decent grade. Also having a 47 year old beat to death GP40 for power doesn't help. Craig
with only 1% gradient,,the coeficient os 0,0157 .If the train weight 2000 tons,,,the reversal force is 31,4 tons,,,at this add 5% more for friction,,bearing friction,,etc. the locomotives may do much more than this adversal forces,in this case for example 40 tons ore more real traction force.
"Not the Brightest Bulb"??? So...do you happen to know the financial capability of this railroad? Why update them? Why not buy brand new ones out of Erie and upgrade all lines to 132 lb welded rail? You sound like a genius Shmotzgaming...give em a call and suggest that. They probably never considered any of those ideas.
Oh wait...now you are saying they are doing better under the new owner than before? Not doing that good was your first comment and then you talk about their new NS relationship as well as their expanded traffic with roads like NBSR and NECR. So which is it under the new owner....better or worse?
No need to insult me. Everyone knows the railroad owner ever sence guilford's days was never that good. Pan Am could probably just sell all the old GP9s and put money towards more Gp40-2s and maybe something heavier than SD40s.
"Everyone" knows that? Again, you seem to understand the finances associated not only with Pan Am...but with the prices in the used locomotive market as well. I wasn't in particular trying to be insulting, just critically pointing out that running low revenue railroads is not an easy or exact science. Those lines were no better before or after Guilford.
Why just one unit? Should they know the pulling capacity and the grade beforehand like pro engineers do? Quite heavy smokers these...engines...PAH compounds and climate change for sure. Should go electric.
GREAT-sound clips! Not too loud, not too soft, just natural roar! Really sweet under the headphones!
bruno640 Glad you liked it Bruno! Craig
That rear unit had some type of engine problems with all that blue smoke coming from it. I wonder how much horsepower that second unit was able to put to the track.
I love the K3LA on SD40-2 607! Thats my fav loco!
607 is an SD40-2 though.
*****
oops i didnt know.
only 607 was online when it stalled. Maybe they cut out 307 for acting up, but they had to try it again to get moving.
WOW that Old Geep needs rebuilt its a smoker Geesh. Nice catch.
Great stuff, love watching this stuff with a brew after a long day! keep 'em coming!
gotta love the "pan am steam program " lol
This is what happens when you don't take care of your equipment!
***** They did? Seriously? You think the original "MEC" was a successful operation?
I love it when they had the derailment right at the E Deerfield yard throat... 3 days of fabulous video opportunities and oh the online comments...
Jon Frost Pan Am Railways maintenance is so deferred at this point you’ve got duct taped holding on fuel tanks and engineers screaming out windows because the radios have not been serviced in 4 years
Jon Frost the objet
Looks like the second engine is doin' all the work. Smokes a lot!
Nice. I love that P5. On that Pan Am Railways GP38-2.
What GP38-2? Pan Am doesn't have any GP38-2's.
I thought it was one because it looked a lot like one! Another thing to is that I'm not the most familiar with Pan Am because we have no Pan Am here in the midwest.
Ooh! Awesome P-42! Has soot, too!
Curious how it stalled but then they were able to get going again?? If it stalled that means not enough power and certainly not enough to get going again, unless they had wheel slip and solved that issue, is sand enough to do that?
2nd unit needs an emissions tune up
Rings, cylinder liners, valves, etc? That looks like low compression. Is it?
the gradients are the worst train enemy. If the load weight and the wagons weight are wrong calculated,,,it may be a problem. the reverse force may be greater than the locomotive traction force, and the result:slipping.
EARTH ANGE L NICE COMPLETE VIDEO, THANK YOU!!
No reason for the stall. He should have powered up way before the hill.
My exact thoughts, he waited too last minute and for no reason either.
It's age has nothing to do with it. Obviously the owner of Pan Am isn't the brightest bulb so he doesn't really maintain these GP40s, My advice would be to update them all so they will live for decades to come.
Very nice catch!! Sounds good too :)

Thanks brother, I will! Craig
Looked tike only the lead unit was online, both were running
Stephen Hunter They’re clearly both online and running...
JxC the second unit was not online before it stalled. It was running but was isolated.
The little engine that couldn't, good video!
I would've ran up to the head end to video the affects of this outcome. Not stay back and not see no action
That trailing GP40-2 needs a tune up! Lol, a little smokey
More than smokey, looked like steam which means coolant getting into block somewhere.
Well shot video man. Steady shots and nice panning.
That second engine seemed to be running with one foot stuck in the mud.🏴☠
Good Captured....

He screwed himself, should've powered up sooner before the climb and gained the momentum ahead of time.
If anything Pan Am has better income than they did when they were GTI back in the mid 80s. Sharing maine lines through new York with Norfolk Southern boosts better income for them. the second unit was already running they had it isolated from the lead unit
Great Video=wish I was there
Most likely an injector problem, leading unit not running and working a decent grade. Craig
And the one that's running looks in bad need of a major overhaul.
How can you run a locomotive in that condition? What a joke.
Hey Dan, yeah. Probably overdue for overhaul.
looks like the second locomotive was ailing a little too probably not puting out the full potential?

That geep is having electrical transition problems. Also, her turbo charger is acting up.
Oh okay, why weren't any helper engines?
Was the Loco on fire
why one unit only to climb the gradient???isnt enough...two units,,better,,more than 50 tons of traction force.
607 wasnt doing much, but 307 was . All that belching exhaust.
Throttle up a lot sooner next time instead of half way up the hill.
607 was the only one running at first. Clearly 307 had problems so 607 was doing all the work
Pan Am World Airways ...... degrading the name of a once great airline to locomotive slippage on a degraded railway line....... the owner bought the name and logo a few years back. SAD!!!
what's with all the smoke?
Come on baby pull!
Get her to the shops, ASAP!
Is the grade realy that bad threw that part? I always figured it was pretty easy
great ending...
They should have been in at least 4 or 5 before they even got on the hill
This is in my back yard
Better money wise. Still doesn't mean the railroad owner is a good person for the job. He has a history of not wanting to share lines with other railroads and other stupid crap.

8:07 it helps if you release the air...

ummm to get a good run up for the hill. anybody that lives at the bottom of one would know
Pan Am must have the worst-maintained locomotives in the business 🤦
a .5% could easily bring a train down on its knees
No need to insult me. Everyone knows the railroad owner ever sence guilford's days was never that good. Pan Am could probably just sell all the old GP9s and put money towards more Gp40-2s and maybe something heavier than SD40s.

Why? So more pollution can enter the air/ground the power plants.
Embarrassment
