    Friends of mine had a fan like this one in their house. They used it in the summer to cool the house down in the evening; they would run it for 20-30 minutes and it would suck in all the cool night air. It worked really well!

      These fans really are effective if you live in an area where it cools off during the night..

    Homeowners do weird things sometimes. That happens with choices like the type of fan, and light switches in particular.
    For example, if you walk into a bathroom, and there's one switch on the wall, that switch obviously controls the light in the bathroom. Sometimes, it also will control the outlet; usually that's because the output of the switch goes to the outlet first, then the light. Better example is when you go into an unfamiliar house, and there's that one lightswitch that apparently doesn't do anything. I have 3 such switches in my garage that are wired very strangely and cannot figure out why they did what they did.
    Same goes with this fan. Either it was left over from somewhere and they decided to install it, or perhaps somebody talked them into that type of fan. With where the house is situated, it reminds me of the old days, when you'd go out as a family, together. The idea I'd guess was you'd open the windows, leave and spend the day on the lake. Nobody's hearing the fan since nobody's home. When you get home, it's nice and cool.
    If you ever had the chance to speak with the original homeowner, they would be able to explain why that fan was used, or why a room was wired in a particular way.

      Due to the location of the fan, it's not intolerable on the main level of the house,, it's really just the two upstairs bedrooms where it's obnoxious..
      The house is not currently owned by the original owner,, so as much as I would like to know why and how this fan was installed,, the chances of that opportunity arising are pretty slim.. The hallway ceiling there isn't large enough for a typical 40"+ whole house fan, so maybe the choice was made simply due to that being the most powerful option in its size range..

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I take it your bedroom was all the way upstairs by that fan.
      Most of these type houses are rented. There you are! That may have indeed the most powerful option for its size. And industrial fans are loud. Fact of the matter.

    Great video Jordan! I lived in a very large house here in Iowa years ago that had one up in the attic. Really moved a lot of air! That one just sounds like it needs oiled and maybe clean the vanes if there is a way to remove the shutters. By clean, I mean dust off the blades or vanes. But oiling the motor would definitely quiet the unit down by quite a bit I would think. Mark in Iowa.

      Thanks Mark! I agree,, a good servicing would probably do this fan well..

    That's probably a kitchen exhaust fan that has been fitted as a whole house fan and has custom made louvres for the fan, I wish I had a whole house fan but I'm in Australia which is hot all the time so we use aircon. Make sure to check out my exhaust fan vids and comment what you think on them.

    If this blower had a HVAC sound attenuator between the shutter opening and the blower intake it would definitely be useful for its power

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was in quite a large house, it's a bit too small to be very useful, especially given the noise.

  • @davida1hiwaaynet
    @davida1hiwaaynet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Seems to work well, but you've got a point about the noise! I wonder if the noise is related to bearings in need of replacement?

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's definitely a possibility.. I'm sure this hasn't been serviced since it was installed..

    • @vacexpert2020
      @vacexpert2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That style of fan is noisy to begin with because it's high static, it's designed to draw air through ductwork, though if I had installed it I woulda gone with a belt driven model and set the motor and pulleys to the slowest speed, when they're slowed all the way down they work and sound like a regular axial fan

  • @Blixt1000
    @Blixt1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This fan is an exhaust fan being utilized as a whole house fan. Thees types of centrifugal blower fans like this one are commonly used in the mushroom type exhaust fan. I know the sound of the motor and the look of the blades, these types of fans are suppose to be more quieter than this one. here as it appears that the bearings are shot on this fan.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the bearings don’t sound too good in this anymore.

    1750 rpm 4 pole motor based on the sound. the fact that it has 12 blades and the particular tone is how I determined that, probably a 1/3 horse or 1/2 horse motor.

      From the looks of how much dust is on there,, I'd guess it is original to the house, which was made in the 60s I believe..
