    Awesome video of the vintage belt-drive whole house fan, Jordan! I believe it is working really well when the fan starts.

    I love those old whole house fans. We have one at our shore house that cools it down to the point of rarely needing the central air.

      These were great, as long as the temperature drops at night they are an excellent air conditioning alternative..

      Jordan U I’m planning to install one in my current home soon. Great for ventilation and exhaust from cooking and smoke odors too. Wish I could find a nice vintage one!

      I've seen them show up at my local Habitat Restore before.. You may also find one on Craiglist or any of those other flaky websites of that nature..

    My great grandpa who's turning 92 and still drives has an old Sears whole house fan, during the day when it's warm before he got central AC he'd fire up a single window air conditioner and have fans blowing the cool air throughout the house, it's a small cottage home with an addition and the air conditioner was an old Kelvinator 12,800btu unit which he gave me, he never had AC before that unit and replaced it with central air, and to this day every night during spring, summer, and early fall he would open all the windows at sundown and run the whole house fan all night, then he'd get up right at sunrise, turn the fan off, and wait for the house to warm up before he turns the AC back on, his electric bill is very low because of this trick, I'm hoping to get a belt drive Wind-O-Cool whole house window fan tomorrow to put in our big pantry window so it can draw cooler air through the house at night so our Goodman system will last long enough for me to move out

      My grandfather has an older Sears whole house fan as well. It used to see a lot of use but has fallen out of favor for the vintage Carrier International Series air conditioner installed upstairs a number of years back. He too puts the fan in the hallway to push the cooler air into the bedrooms.

      @@JordanU Nothing beats the sound of a Tecumseh recip though, I've got a few shitty videos of it up, I'll have to lug it out of storage to better capture the sound, when I move to my own place I'm taking all but my 2015 Frigidaire with me, as houses around here can be had for less than $50K if they don't have central air, and considering I'll be taking my 1982 Kelvinator 12800btu, 1987 Wards 7000btu, 1996 Sharp 6500btu, 1999 Whirlpool 500btu, and 2001 Kenmore 5600btu window air conditioners with me I'll have more than enough cooling to ensure each unit isn't overloaded, when we moved to our current house the 1975 Moncrief condenser and 1992 Miller LP furnace were busted and it was the middle of summer, we started with the Kelvinator and it cooled the whole house, though I ended up using the Sharp, Kenmore, and Whirlpool to even out the load, all are kickass units that handily outperform modern units 2x their size

    Some whole house fans can be mounted on an end wall/gable, with the shutters in the ceiling.

    Yeah...that’s what I was gonna say or so, or unless it’s like my homart with the new belt that’s not attached, but more rather attached with hose clamps attached to a blue carabiner with a silver moving stick to hook and unhook stuff, and a couple of screw drivers or so, then back to just the carabiner because it wouldn’t spin as fast or so...and now it’s just the 1/one or so and a couple of drivers, to hold it in place

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  4 ปีที่แล้ว
