  • This is the first of two parts of my video documentary on AMTRAK's "Silver Meteor" train from Miami, Florida to Washington DC's Union Station. I am calling this trip "Train 3", and it is the third of three train trips on my "Train Odyssey 6" that also includes the AMTRAK "Capitol Limited" (Train 1) from Chicago to Washington DC and "Silver Star" (Train 2), from Washington, DC to Miami, Florida. So, overall there are six videos in this series.
    As part of the same overall trip, I will have separate videos on various attractions, including a "Bridge Odyssey" for the Florida Keys, and a visit to the Florida Everglades National Park.

    Yes, he is riding in a NEW Viewliner II sleeper car. If the car starts with 620 (numbers 62000-62049) than its an older Viewliner I built in the 1990's. If the car starts with the 625 (62500-62524) then is a brand new Viewliner II built between 2015 and 2021. They were only just introduced this year (2021). The 9810, 9811, 9812 on the Meteor and 9110, 9111, 9112 are the car assignment numbers. Since their is no way of knowing which car will be on a train in advance, Amtrak uses this system instead. The first two digits are the train number (91 - Silver Star, 98 - Silver Meteor) and the second two digits which type of car it is. The first coach on a train is 01, the second is 02 and so on. The first sleeper is 10, the second 11 and so on.

    Don't know who told you the Viewliner II sleepers are refurbished; they are in fact brand new cars, currently deployed only on the FL trains. There are plans to do a gradual "soft refresh" of the VL I sleepers after all the VL II's have been put into service. An easy way to tell them apart is by looking at the undercarriage: VL II's have their undercarriage components enclosed in boxes, while VL I's are mostly exposed.

    There was once a third train on this route following the same route as the Meteor, but making more stops. The original name was the Silver Palm, but was later changed to the Palmetto. There was no first class or dining car on it. It was all coach. Nowadays, it only goes between Savannah and New York City. However, back around 2002 or so, I took it between Wilson, NC all the way to Miami to catch a cruise ship out of the Port of Miami and back. That was a long trip, overnight, to be taking all coach. Although, I did take the Cardinal from Virginia to Chicago and back in coach.

    • @parkerjon29
      @parkerjon29 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually the silver palm was equipped with a viewliner car and a diner I believe. It was taken off when there was a VL shortage in the Early 2000s. This was preceeding the truncation to Savannah. It was also different and took a different route through Florida, via Tampa, Ocala and Dade city. It ran as an all Coach train for a while but it did have sleepers up until around 04 ( I think).

    The new Amtrak Station is located (Technically) at the Miami Intermodel Station (MIA, TriRail, MetroRail, Greyhound). However, the engineers miscalculated the station by 1,000+ feet and it's not being used. A brand new, albeit small, station just sits empty and abandoned. I do agree with the location of the Miami Station, rumor is that it was going to be redone and the extra amenities were going to be added; then 2020 came.

      @youtuuba  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think I mentioned somewhere in one or more of this set of videos that the Silver Star & Silver Meteor originate/terminate at New York City, but that I was only going from/to Washington DC. As you said, there is a connecting train that continues from New York City up to Boston, but I might have accidentally given the impression at some point that THESE two trains go directly to Boston.

    • @davidadler2255

      You can tell because the schedule from DC to Boston is written in a different color on the timetable. You have to start in Petersburg, Norfolk, or further north to be able to go direct north of NYC (i.e. to Boston).

    Regarding the operation at the Orlando station. The northbound trains generally stop with the engine just south of the SunRail station. This allows the engineer to get off, walk to his car in the parking lot, and scurry home. Nearby just outside the station is a hotdog vendor which you may have noticed. Although the passengers are cautioned not to stray from their car area, it is quite common for people to be left at the station waiting in line for a hotdog. Also FYI the station is within walking distance of several major hospitals which are on the station side of the track. Just beyond the station area on the left is the Amway Center which is Orlando's site for major sporting and concert venues. If you go through at night and sit on the left side of the car, the view of this is quite impressive.

    Hi: The solution to the problem you had figuring out the exact route near Lakeland, Florida. On the Amtrak website, pull up the Train Status map. It shows every route across the country, and you can zoom in to look at any section of the route to get a very close idea of where the route goes.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Daniel Stober, you are correct, and indeed I was aware of this during the trip. However, so much of this journey was through areas where my smart phone had little or no data connectivity, so I was not able to peruse the AMTRAK zoomable detailed online maps. Instead, I had to do the best I could while narrating on the train, based solely on the AMTRAK route schedule said (which is rather confusing) and my automotive GPS, and sometimes the Google Maps app on my smart phone whenever that worked (but neither of the latter two have any information on the route details).
      A lot of the details I added in the captions during editing DID come from the AMTRAK zoomable detailed route maps, once I was home again.

      Robert Jones, I am pretty certain that the US will not see widespread, or long distance, high speed rail in our lifetimes or the foreseeable future. It is just a pipe dream, huge cost and infrastructure hurdles to overcome, plus disincentives of lack of political will and public apathy. I think the only way it would ever happen is if widespread commercial avaition comes to an end due to overwealming environmental issues, or running out of suitable fuels for airliners, etc.

The engine is the SC44 Charger and they have different colors of trains. If you watch videos of trains in other countries they have different colors. Yellow, orange, red. The only color Amtrak has is the Pacific Surfliner that is dark blue. The rest are boring silver. It’s different to see the Southwest chief take one of the dark blue Surfliner car back to Chicago. One dark blue car and the rest boring silver. Next time you go to Miami. Check out Brightline. The ride was smooth. No bad tracks. Right now it’s short trips hopefully they will do long trips like Amtrak does.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kevin Childress, I would have to disagree with your statement that AMTRAK is serving "airline style" food. While it is not cooked by a chef in the bowels of a Dining Car, in fact AMTRAK has had precious little actual "chef prepared" food in many years. However, at least passengers could enjoy their "chef heated up and assembled on a plate" meals in a Dining Car atmosphere, with plates and other more civilized amenities. Currently, as I experienced the hot meals on this Train Odyssey, they were of good quality and variety, were "well heated" (not undercooked nor dried out), and tasty. If the same exact meal contents had been served on plates in a Dining car, I doubt if I could have told the difference between what AMTRAK used to serve during the years I have been taking their long distance trains. A pretty car cry from typical airline meals. That said, the menu was necessarily limited to types of meals that could survive the hours of storage followed by reheating with all parts of the entre coexisting in the same aluminum pan during that heating....so no AMTRAK steak, for example.

      @@youtuuba You've got to try the chowder. Amtrak clam chowder is to die for. They use real clams.

    On time = What a miracle. I took this route north from Savannah to New York and it was 7 hours late out of Savannah. A tree supposedly fell across the tracks somewhere in Florida.
