  • This video is part four in a series of four videos that I call "A Train Odyssey". Please be aware that when I was shooting the video, I
envisioned a three-part series, instead of a four part series, and some of that my spoken dialogue still references Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, out of three videos, but it was too late to re-shoot those videos once I realized it would actually be a four-part series. I have tried to
correct all TYPED text and add pop-up text correcting myself when my voice is referring to the original three-part series.
Part 1 is a combination of the Chicago Metra train trip from my home in the suburbs to Chicago Union Station to catch the AMTRAK
"Cardinal" train, which I was taking as far as Washington DC, although the train continues from there to its terminus. Once I arrive at Chicago Union Station, I do an extensive tour of that station, the immediate surrounding area in downtown Chicago, and the
Metropolitan Lounge in the station. This video was taken on Saturday, September 24, 2016.
Part 2 is the first day on board AMTRAK's "Cardinal" train, ending before the scenic video portion starts. The majority of this is taken
up with my 'Viewliner Roomette Tour', similar to my two well-received 'Superliner Roomette Tours'. I tried to be as thorough in this video as I had been in those other videos. This video was taken on Sunday, September 25, 2016.
Part 3 is the second day on board AMTRAK's "Cardinal" train, starting from first light somewhere near Cincinnati and ending at
Washington DC's Union Station. This route mostly follows various rivers upstream from the Ohio River up into the Appalachians and then over into that mountain range's eastern foothills in western Virginia.
Part 4 is a trip on the AMTRAK "Northeast Regional" train, from Washington DC's Union Station to Petersburg, Virginia, a couple days
after the trip on the "Cardinal". This video highlights AMTRAK's recently added "Business Class" service. I end this video with a brief
shot of a nice rainbow taken from a car in northern North Carolina right after a massive rainstorm, and then some pretty video taken from my commercial airline trip from Richmond, Virginia back home to the Chicago area. This video was taken on Tuesday, September 27, 2016.
Not part of the four video series, but shot during the same trip, is my video taken at both of the Smithsonian Air & Space Museums
(National Mall and Steven Udvar-Hazy locations).....see my TH-cam channel. These museums were not the purpose of my trip, which
was mostly to visit friends, but I thought I would share them with TH-cam viewers. These museum videos were taken on Monday and Tuesday, September 26 & 27, 2016.

I wish you had been on the starboard side of the train. You would have seen the train stations in Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Ashland, and Richmond (Staples Mill). Petersburg and Norfolk are only ones on port side.

8:03. How much space is there between seats? I am over six feet and am disgusted with seat space on airlines. I see here your legs crossing in the seat with plenty of room or so it seems. If I knew your size I could compare it to mine to see if I fit there.

Hello! I am a big fan of your train videos having watched them several times. How long before we see the Coast Starlight. (Waiting, waiting, waiting.) I have a couple comments about the Cardinal. The locks on the Kanawah (yes, it is K'naw'a--accent on the second syllable), although they are called the London Locks. are at Marmet The town in Virginia, Staunton, is pronounced "Stanton" with a flat 'a'. Quite often visitors mispronounce it; the locals are somewhat rudely quick to correct. Keep up the good work!

I am just now starting to edit the video for the Coast Starlight. Very busy this time of year, and hard to find the many hours it takes to edit a typical train video for TH-cam.

I am enjoying this series. With Covid-19, I can't travel right now and these "Train Odyssey" videos are my way of
traveling. This is a great host and I love the details that he gives. I feel I am on the train with him. I can't wait for
this coronavirus to lift so I can take Amtrak again. Amtrak has cut in half the trains serving my area of Florida.
The Silver Star, No. 91 and No. 92, once daily, is now only every other day but a lot of people are afraid to travel. Florida is considered a "hot spot" for the virus now and some states are making it mandatory that anyone from Florida
self quarantine 14 days upon arrival! This makes it pretty had to travel right now. I am enjoying these videos.

There are a lot of Amtrak’s that go through Ashland, VA. One of my favorite places to watch trains. There’s a cam on the station that follows the train and looks like you are in front of the train. . There are 3 Northeast regionals that stop there. The Cardinal goes through but doesn’t stop. The Auto train does too.

Actually, those business class seats look "plusher" than coach, plus they have leg rests, which most shoirt distance coach class does not (At least in the Midwest)

I have ridden Amtrak for years.. always coach. Business class seating by your description and video is no different from coach. except for free snacks. Seriously ? Is that what you pay extra for ?? In any case I refuse to travel Amtrak again until they make dining car service available to coach class again.

Judi Sheldon, I think you are misrepresenting what I said about Budiness Class, at least in terms of painting what I said in the least favorable interpretation.
But it is foolish to condemn a service for cutbacks forced on them bu others, as if "you'll show THEM!" by refusing to travel henceforth. The world does not work the way you seem to think ot does. If you want to affect a change, don't bitch at others (e.g. TH-cam viewers, or to the servant (e.g. AMTRAK), rather direct your concerns to congress, or by supporting one of the public grass roots rail ridership lobbying organizations.

@@youtuuba i misrepresented nothing. From what i saw and what i know to be about coach class seating, no difference was evident. Period. Are we not allowed to comment on your story telling ?

I noticed that you aren't using your railroad scanner on this trip or your Garmin Gps. because it's a short trip, I take it. I really enjoyed these series of videos! keep them coming.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I did not use the Garmin GPS on this trip because it was short, and because I did not have a private area to 'install' it in, and because I did not want to mess with setting it up, plugging it in, etc; and with the limited 'personal space' my seat afforded, I did not want it taking up any of that space. I used my smart phone Google Maps app instead. You may notice that the smart phone interferes with my video camera's audio recording, which is one of many reasons that I don't use the phone as my GPS for most train trips, and use the dedicated Garmin GPS instead. As for the radio scanner, I usually use one only on long distance trains, and even then only when I am in my private room and the sound should hopefully not be audible to other passengers unless I have the door open. For this short trip, I did not have a set of headphones along, so I had no option to listen to the scanner privately.
