That painting is beautiful. I absolutely love it. It's so gorgeous. The setting, the girl painted in red with her umbrella. I don't know why, but it's enchanting.
Oh my gosh! Finally someone explains an easy way to paint the edges. I struggled for years trying to do my edges. Thanks for putting this out there for us.✨☺️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
HI Jane my wife follows you and since I started painting I'm following you as well , I've learned so much from you, and your techniques of painting is awesome. thank you so much.
THANK YOU!!! I am a very very new beginner, and this technique greatly improved the look of my "painting." - I use quotes because it is actually a background only, with another medium (heat transfer vinyl) that will be added after thoroughly dried. Now I am ready to try making a real picture. Your videos are just great, and you have opened up a whole new world for me.
I'm admiring all the stuff on your walls. You have an interesting studio/space. I especially love the OZ drawings/paintings in the background of this video. Is that your work? My husband thinks the WofO is, by far, the best movie ever made. I've been cruising the TH-cam world for many years searching for beginner help and your site is the only one to which I have subscribed. Thank you for the site, for talking slowly, for giving/demonstrating directions that are easy to understand, and most of all for not allowing the music volume to overwhelm your voice.
This is fine. Thank you! There are no rules about the edges. Most canvases are framed that are finalized so few people see them. If you want your edges to matter, paint them. That's all that matters. A great painting won't be judged on the edges.
I watch your video of this painting and painted it, this was my 3rd painting and I'm getting so many compliments. I still can believe I did it your a awesome teacher and I can't wait to try a other one ....I'm learning so much from you THANK YOU for sharing all your knowledge tips and tricks
I had trouble using the palette knive for the dress and umbrella, I was getting mark from the palette knive and the more I tried to fix it the worst it got....was it the way I hold it or is it just a lack of experience.....and how can I show you my painting?
Jane thank you for all your tutorials you have inspired me so much I haven't painted anything in probably 35-40 years I want to paint so bad everyday I think about it but I'm disabled and live on very very low income so I will have to save for a couple months to get just the basic things I need thank you for inspiring me to go back and do what I always love to do
Thanks so much for your help. I am very new at painting (about 2 weeks old) and doing so well with your help. Going to do this painting today. You have a very good speaking voice and you explain and show the technique well. Its as if you next to me. Thanks again.
I'm glad I watched this! I never thought of painting the edges a solid color! Der... I've got my paintings stacking up waiting to have the edges painted and then varnish them. I thought I was going to have to mix paints to match the edges of all areas! That would've taken months, hence it hasn't been done yet! Now I'll be able to rock those out quickly. Thanks Jane!!
I usually just paint the edges when I do the base coat of paint, that way I don't have to worry about it later. But as usual, you did an excellent job at what not to do and what to do.
Very helpful, did not know the right way, so far I do the wrap around continuation cause I did not know of any other way that would be acceptable. Thanks so much for the help!
Really depends on the painting and what you are going to do after it is done, whether or not one needs to paint the edges. If it is going to be framed, or hung as is, etc etc . Some remove the canvas and have it stretched and that bare edge is what gets attached to the new framing or whatever material one chooses to use . No right or wrong as you said....it is the artists preference But a great teaching video on how it should be done Thanks Jane .. as always another excellent video.
I oil paint only and paint the edges of my canvases all the time. What is so good is you don’t need the added expense to buy a frame! I find it so easy to continue the painting around the edges as I paint. When painting the bottom of the canvas remove canvas from easel and just lay the canvas on a table to finish and let dry. I highly recommend this!
Great video. Personally, I can't stand not painting them black. I put off painting the edges for weeks sometimes and when I see the ones with the white edges I'm like "UGH." And when I finally get around to painting them black, they look SO much better. It just frames it in this nice dark shadow. Also that technique for painting them is brilliant. I'm gonna use that.
Your really good that painting is amazing thank you...what if I want to paint it something different like painted edged business cards I want it to pop like a frame
Thank you very much for showing me what I was doing wrong and explaining why it wasn't working. As a new painter who will most likely never frame her work, this was extremely helpful!
Is there a video for that painting on the wall behind the corner of the rain umbrella painting, the one with the moon and bear tree? I've seen it several times back there in videos and I totally love it, would love to paint that.
This was so very helpful! Thanks so much! I was so frustrated by accidentally getting paint up on the top of my painting. I love your technique. I just tried it and it worked beautifully!
Thanks Jane. I have to admit I am guilty of doing it the wrong way. I like the all black edge concept. Will have to try it on a painting and see if I like it. I usually try to continue my painting all around though. Looks nice if you get those floater frames. Lesson learned. I usually wind up with paint all over my hands trying to paint edges. Will have to try your way. Thanks again.
+Cecilia Greenstein I'm glad I could help! I confess that I end up with paint all over my hands, too, lol. Yes, those floater frames do look really nice!!
I use a little wee paint roller. It works great! It's only about 3 inches long. I put a glob of paint on my paper palette, and roll the roller in it, trying to not get too much paint on it. The easiest way to make sure to not get too much paint on the roller, I've found, is to use a brush to apply the paint all the way around and then roll it onto the canvas. Best part is, it doesn't go onto the front of the canvas! = )
+Rosemary Clark I've never thought of using a roller, Rosemary, but you're the second person to tell me that! It sounds like a great idea. I'll have to try it. Thank you for sharing
+Painting with Jane The things I like about using it is that you don't need to worry about getting it on the front (as long as you don't have too much paint on it) and it's quick. I paint all the edges of my paintings, whether I do it in dark brown (which isn't as stark as black) or wrapping the front painting onto the sides. People like that they don't have to go through the extra expense of framing. I do too! lol = )
+Painting with Jane By the way, I didn't know I could paint till a friend paid for 2 classes for my 49th birthday! I've been happily painting in acrylics for the past 10 years now. I'm so grateful for the richness it has added to my life! I've been trying watercolor, but am selling all my supplies because acrylic is my first love. So, keep painting!
Thank you so much for showing us the right way to do the edges I used to mess up a lot 😊 also can you please do a video to demonstrate how to varnish a painting that has a lot of texture on it? I always wonder how to smoothly varnish a painting like that with a brush
I'm glad I could help! Varnishing texture is really the same thing, you just have to pay a little closer attention and maybe do it in 2 coats. Spray varnish is always a good option, too!
Hi…thank you so much for the video. I noticed that most artists have stopped signing the front of their paintings. What is the correct way to do so and what are your thoughts on nameplates?😊
Hi Jane :).. I would really like to learn how to paint the picture of the trees towards the right hand corner of the screen in the beginning of this tutorial. Do you have a tutorial for that or will you? I love the feeling the glow in the center gives in contrast to the darkness of the trees.
Thank you, Mia! I actually do have a video of that one :) th-cam.com/video/iOp679FsbFI/w-d-xo.html I just added fireflies on top of it, but it's the same painting. Enjoy :D
great tip thanks Jane. I like painting the edges but I always mess up. can't wait to try this. The painting on the wall -of the forest in a circle- next to the skull is there a tutorial for that? I would love to paint that.

Great job! Allow me to suggest an even easier way: buy a good-sized permanent ink, black, felt-tip marker...& do it with that. Just be careful when applying it to the edge of the painting that you don't push down too hard & run it over the edge onto the front of the piece. On a 16 X 20 canvas, it takes only about 2 minutes. Happy Trails

HI Jane my wife follows you and since I started painting I'm following you as well , I've learned so much from you, and your techniques of painting is awesome. thank you so much.
So glad I looked this up before I attempted it. I like the idea of using the darkest color in the painting. Thanks!
THANK YOU!!! I may be wrong, but I always paint my edges as I go, so the color always match that particular area and it's always a smooth transition
+LizzyDvacurls Nope, that's not wrong at all That's how some people do it. Not me. That's too much work for me, lol.
+Painting with Jane yes it's a bit of a headache but I like knowing it's done as I go
that's how I do it also.
That’s how I prefer to do it, too. It is a bit more work but the look is so much more pleasant and professional that it’s absolutely worth it.
