Saw this tool suggested for drawing years ago and totally forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder! 👍😉

This reminds me what I learned from doing digital painting. I was told to do an exercise everyday where I put a random photo of object, draw grids over it, and copy it patch by patch.
People who taught me this told me that beginners intuitively try to copy an object part by part but lack the ability to judge relatives size and position between them, as well as their true colors behind all the contrasts. This results in drawings with distorted structures and weird colors.
By masking everything else but an abstract part of the object, we can treat it as a collection of lines and colors rather than a structured object, which really saves you from being overwhelmed by what you see.

That's wonderfully explained Eric, thank you for taking the time to explaining your methods, very much similar to the way I do things.

Thank you .. what a super way to break down what may be an overwhelming area of a photo to a novice realist painter!

H Wanda, I'm glad this gives you some ideas. It's good to try and focus on one area through eliminating all the surrounding fuss, especially when working with details. Paul 🎨

What timing!!! This happened to me just two days ago as I was working on a complex seashell. I kept losing my place on the reference photo. Thank you for sharing this wonderful tip!
