the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
Another tip for the cement once you have your post in the hole all level, is to get a dry bag of quick set cement and pour it dry into the hole around your post, re level and check your post is in line still(2 people works great, one person to hold the post and check the level, the other to pour the concrete around the post), then tamp the concrete down around the post with a steel piece of rebar to eliminate the air bubles and that makes it stable enough to be able to build the fence completely without having to reinforce your post or hold it in place or wait for the concrete to set. Once the fence has been built then go back and make sure its still level, tamp it down some more and then wet your posts, works extremely well and you can build the whole fence in a much quicker time frame. Concrete sets nice and firm. Have been doing it for 30 years and i have had no complaints. It elimates the need to have your yard open for an extend period of time to, you can get a fence down and back up much more quickly, and it still be super stong.

So you pour your wet cement in the hole, set the post in, get it plumb. Then pour in some dry cement on top of the still uncured cement and use rebar to get rid of air bubbles (and maybe do just a bit of mixing in the process??) and make sure your posts are still plumb and that's it?
If you do this, when can you assemble the fence?
As someone who lives in Virginia and has terrible clay/sand soil I could not be more jealous of the brown gold that auger was digging up.
Don't let the posts touch the string. Keep a fixed distance to the string, so that you don't push it slightly further with each post.

You can just put quick Crete in the hole, you don’t even have to mix it but you still want to pack it down a little. You can put some water on top of it but you really don’t need to, it will absorb enough water from the ground to harden, If you’re really worried about it you can just hose down the ground around it and put some water on top when you’re done but I’ve used a ton of quick Crete for fence posts and deck footings and I’ve also dug many of them out and they’re always solid. It can be easier than concrete in a lot of ways, you don’t have to mix it and you can just drop the bags off by the holes and you don’t have to do any mixing or worry about time. But you do need to use a 2 x 4 or something to tamp it down you don’t want to just drop it in there loosely. Usually I throw some rocks or some gravel in the bottom for wood posts and get the height to exactly where I want it and once it’s plum and level just dump the Quick Crete around in Tempe town with a board or a shovel. This also works for snake and rodent holes around foundation and concrete work. Just put the quick Crete in and compress it and then hit it with a hose and you’re done. On the negative side, it’s very dusty and if you get that dust on your hands or if you get liquid cement on your hands or skin it can burn chemically and if not rinsed off immediately can actually send you to the hospital and be very dangerous, but that anytime you use cement whether it’s wet or not. Gloves and boots and I protection are always a good idea.
Some people say you can use expanding foam, and technically you can but it’s not a permanent repair and it’s not really all that strong, I think it’s a lot easier just to dump a bag of quickCrete in there.
For 25 years I did my best to talk people out of installing Vinyl Fencing (for privacy fencing). It is not a good product for the job. The problems are; discoloration, wearing due to movement (expand/contract and wind), do not stand up to strong wind (full panels) and become brittle from UV exposure. As a Contractor concerned about the product after the sale, I ran from jobs that wanted Vinyl. Installed good quality wood fencing .... dried, pressure treated lumber .... stained or oiled 9 months after installation is much better for the long haul. Vinyl looks good for a short period of time in the South Florida, does not last.
Great job - We had the exact same fence installed and had to remove halfway because HOA said no. Avoid HOA's people!
I did fence installs for years for a company. We never mixed Crete we dump dry quick Crete into the hole packed it, leveled and moved to the next. Makes working with it easier, don't move at all. Was told the moisture in the ground would set the Crete. Never had a problem or re-work so idk, not an expert was just an installer
Great job but if you had used the standard quick drying post crete you could have fitted posts & panels as you go at the same time. Nice to see your husband being busy again,seriously does he not have any pride ??. Not lifting a finger while his wife & neighbour put a fence up.

Yes, I've used quick set cement without water. It's a huge labor saver. Pour some dry quick set into the hole, place the post then fill with dry cement. Add water per directions on the bag. Hard set within 2 hours. Great video btw!
That's how we did it when I installed fences for a company. Wet Crete was a pita and dry is easier to set and level. 👍
We have lovely neighbors, older couple, they know absolutely everything about being a homeowner, have all sorts of tools and equipment. This is such a blessing to have someone like that who can help with new projects 👍🏻!
Thanks for the tip about how to get dirt out of your grass. My grandfather taught me to do this with a stiff tine rake with the tines facing up. Also, if you use a soft tines rake you can spread it over the yard evenly or fill in low spots with that dirt. Then nothing has to leave the site.
When you install the rails, you insert it in the post that doesn’t have a rail in it, that way you gain at least 2” more of rail inside the posts.
I’d suggest using a tarp at the very least even dumping the dirt that falls off the auger. Holding it over a wheel barrow would have also been a good idea

Yep, getting ready to do about 400 feet myself. I have areas where I will need to rack the fence to meet the slope.

Main thing we do different, is put the metal sleeve in the gate post, and screw it inside the post with self tapping screws, then put the post and the insert into the concrete and let it dry a couple days and then install the gate. Gonna be stronger with that metal a third of the height in the concrete

Back filling with cement and then dirt will hold it plum so you don't need to brace anything
Hint: you mention quick setting cement. It is more like a must have for fencing. It has zero drawback, and it makes setting the post infinitely quicker and easier. No mixer or anything, just dump the bag into the hole, dump some water onto it, keep the post straight for like 2 minutes, and that’s it. It took me about 10 minutes per post...
On a big job like this that can really add up. If it's more than 15 or 20 holes and on the road I'm more inclined to set the posts in an empty hole and order some concrete.
Johannes R I don’t think even orderibg it would be any faster than some quickrete. Quickrete is the fastest you can get, way cheaper, and you can do it whenever you want and you are not depending on delivery dates and mixer availabiliy.
thatguy 00 Yeah, I can see that even that is an overkill sometimes. But while you, as an expert, know exactly when do you need it, an amateur DIYer might not be so sure about it. It’s a good margin of safety to just pour it into all wholes nevertheless.

Now that's a companion helper/ leader.
So much extra work ,I installed these professionally for over 8 years, digging by hand is quite difficult for those not used to it but certainly can be done. 12 inch diameter holes are a bit excessive, we usually went for 10 inches which generates less dirt and you use less concrete. Holes dont need to be bell shaped just pour concrete about 4 inches lower than ground level, the hole in the post below ground is meant for concrete to flow inside of the post so proper consistency of concrete should be a bit on the thin side but not like soup. A torpedo level gives the same reading as a 4 ft masonry level and is much less cumbersome. If the post is level and the concrete is poured properly surrounding the post ,bracing would be unnecessary.

Quickset concrete will dry fast so you don't have to secure the post with studs. You may secure the post with rocks inside the hole

Nice work!! I did a vinyl fence too. To make it truly bulletproof, you fill the posts up at least 1/2 way with cement. I did this and the fence is rock-solid. Glad you project turned out well!!

no,. no solar caps on all posts - it may be over kill.. Perhaps the corners only? or otherwise spaced apart? If you want light - grab a set of solar powered string lights for use inside the fence, you can use some form of 3m picture frame wall fasteners to attach. Very nice job well done. Kudos. good luck.. the shits always rent out by the middle east and there's never any lumber and if there is it's highly inflated. Also big rocks and roots maybe use that machine but seems a little over kill you could rent a two person 60 bucks and single person one for 40 bucks. 3 feet isn't deep enough just keep going down until you hit a water line or gas line. Also when using machinery like that you have to be careful of your clothing not getting caught. She should be wearing a bikini that would be more suitable and safer

Put a tarp down, auger out the dirt, collect the dirt, move tarp to next spot. No need to deal with raking out the grass.for the dirt at each post
