Hi Dr. I had physical therapy last year in South Korea. I have knee tendonitis and a baker's cyst. I had heat and tens therapy. The pads were a bit different, they were more like suction cups instead of the peel off that you show on the video. Anyway I'm back in the States and my knee is hurting again. Do you recommend this machine or an ultrasound one? Thanks
Thank you! My Pain Management Dr recommend a TENS unit to me. I got mine a couple days ago and it’s been “ok-good”. I read the instruction booklet. Nowhere did it mention the cross-cross placement. I’m treating chronic low back pain, and when my husband crisscrossed them on my back for me today it made SUCH a difference! It is now a solid good+ for helping me manage my pain.
Hi! I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I have complex chronic lower back pain from an injury. I am a teenage girl and am abt to see a pain management dr if my pain persists- I have had surgery. TENS may be an option. Do you still use it and does it relieve your pain? Is it comfortable? Good luck xx
Just purchased one from ALDI. It has 39 TENS programs for pain relief. 19 EMS muscle stimulation. 10 massage program for relaxing. For $29.99 I'm very happy. You were super helpful with explaining how to properly use it. :-)
Ah! Just got mine tonight, my period cramps are being really bad these past few months and someone recommend a TENs unit, I finally decided to get one and it works so well!
I really have enjoyed getting the TENS treatment at my chiropractor’s. Now I can do it anytime! I watched this as preparation for my first at-home use.
I use the TENS 7000 for pain relief because I do EXTREMELY well with pain meds, which turns into addiction REAL QUICK! Be very careful with opiate pain meds because they can make ANYONE dependent upon them and then eventually addicted to them so when you stop taking, you get very sick and makes anxiety levels go through the roof. Took me over 7 years to get clean from an addiction that started from an injury. Be safe and God Bless!
Same, I'm an addict. I was worried, with my new found back pain, I would have to start taking Kratom again. This is helping massively and I've only been using it for 5 minutes.
Not true that opioid pain meds can turn ANYONE into an addict! That's bad press for safe opioid use and sometimes they are necessary to treat certain conditions that are excruciatingly painful like bone infections (called osteomyelitis or chronic osteomyelitis). I was on a strong opioid for 7 years and NEVER became addicted, never exhibited 'drug seeking' behaviors, always took the lowest possible dose I could to manage the pain but I always hated the feeling of being on the drug; and I successfully got off the medication myself. Kindly do not generalize. Your experience is NOT everyone's experience and everyone needs to be closely monitored by ONE doctor prescribing the medication. Safe opioid use is not only possible, but necessary and life-saving in cases of excruciating pain!
Just start using my wife’s unit that she had in a drawer. This is awesome. It relaxes me. First night I used it on my back I woke up feeling great. I usually only use it for 15 minuets sessions. But it’s great. Didn’t know it shouldn’t contradict the muscle, but to only lightly vibrate it.
I just received mine today, different brand but very similar, and your explanation is waaaaaay better than the one that came with it. I was especially happy to learn about crossing them to get the current in the proper place...I never would've known that without you. I'm learning so much from your videos. Thank you so much!
I've had several TENS machines and never knew the difference between EMS machines or how to properly place the pads. So glad I came across this video. Thank you for such a wonderful public service.
Amazon sells these devices. I recommended it because they really do help. I bought one of these machines after my dad went to physical therapy, and they used one of these on him. And he had bought a machine like this. Name a few days ago was going to give out on me. I couldn't go up or down the stairs appointment on it needs support but it was still hurting. But after trying my dad's machine it really helped. So I went and on Amazon and bought one of these machines and it really helped. So I do recommend it.
Last weekend I ended up riding to the ED in an ambulance. I just turned 70 last month, and have Parkinson's and RA. When I got up from a nap my right hand wouldn't work properly. No pain anywhere, and shoulder worked, elbow worked, but the wrist... With palm up, I could bend my hand up and down at the wrist. With palm down, I can't move it up. I was diagnosed with Radial Nerve Palsy, was given a wrist brace and a steroid shot, and left with a Rx for a Prednisone Z-Pack. I started on Saturday and finished yesterday on Thursday. I happened to have an appointment with the RA doc on Monday, and she said I needed a Nerve Induction Test, generally administered by a Neurologist. (Well, I happen to have one of those.) Well, the doctor never got back to me on MON, TUES, WED, or THU, so last night (THU) I started messing around with my NexWave TENS (having found it in the corner in the dark). Not sure where to locate the pads, or what mode to use, I chose 4 pads, two above and two below my wrist on both the top and bottom of the hand/arm. Then I chose NMES only because both the IFC and TENS modes appeared to be for pain relief. (For some reason, I was hesitant to move to my elbow.) So, I'm not sure what to do here. Am I using the proper mode? Is it in the correct location? How often should I use it, if at all? Should I try to get to PT first? I'm afraid that whatever I choose, I will somehow cause a delay in the healing and the symptoms will not go away. I may be getting a little old, but I've gotten used to having 2 fully functional hands. What say you?
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.
Amazon sells these. My dad bought this after what is therapist is to use it on him. And then I started getting pain and after using my dad's I went and bought my own it's great.
I have perferal neuropathy and went to a doctor for a similar treatment and I ended up with it but not as much, so I put it on the part of my foot below my toes for 30 minutes and It relieves a lot of my numbness and I even feel my toes when I wiggle them, this is the first time and on my worst foot....to be continued
A coworker bought me a TENS/EMS unit last week. Never used one before. Thank you for these videos. Can't wait to give it a try and see if it helps with my back spasms.
I injured my knee a couple of years ago and had an a uncomfortable pain still, I bought a tens machine a week ago and use it first thing in the morning and just before bedtime and the pain is now a dull ache and I have better mobility and only use a walking stick now and then. It's the best £17.50 I've ever spent.
Thank you greatly for this video. I am new to using one and had no clue where to begin with it! This video was very helpful. I have learned how to use it and I love it! Thank you again!
Can you be included in the box with my tens unit 🤣 Awesome review Dr. Jo! I have wide spread body pain from my shunt malfunction and I'm starting physiotherapy soon, being hooked up to the tens unit. I'm praying it works cause I've tried several pain meds for pain, and nothing works. My pain is a ten 24/7 🤞🏻
Freakin finally a video that explains what I typed in the search. Seriously best video for this Tens Unit. Totally subcribing!!! I know what's in the box. 🤦🏽♀️
I pick mine up tomorrow!! Never used this before but I have used a muscle stimulator. I've had moderate to severe DAILY lower back pain from multiple issues including bulging discs, spasms, and especially OsteoFacet Arthritis/Osteoarthritis for 14 YEARS!! I'm on really high doses of Opiods and they really do help, however due to the current climate regarding Opiods, I'm being punished for other people's addictions, overdoses, and other issues. Nice, huh? Anyways, I'm gonna try PT again and this time I'm trying this, too. Wish me luck!!!

AND I REALIZE THAT SOMETIMES PAIN MEDS ARE NECESSARY BUT TRY TO NOT RELY ON THEM. GOOD LUCK TO ALL
Thanks Doc! I am suffering from serious joint pain around the rotator cuff area. The pain started inside and now it’s worked its way to the outer arm. I went in for an MRI and luckily no tear was found but the joints are very painful. I can’t raise my right arm or even reach out or across. I remember I had this TENS unit under my bed all these years and I just broke it out and plugged it in. Getting an appointment for PT is ridiculous here in the Bay Area. Next appointment was 4 weeks out. Screw that I’ll try to use the TENS unit for rehab and crossing my fingers it will help me out.
I was told in the hospital where I got it that so set the normal number for my chronic pains, I should keep raising the number until I feel the little feeling like ants walking on my skin. Any number is it, I should triple it. For example. If I feel it on 12, I have to raise it to 36. And sometimes it's too strong to handle.

Hi Dr. Jo... Thanks for the informative video on how to use a TENS unit. It helped me make up my mind about TENS, and I had purchased a TENS unit through your linked webpage. Your tip on how to place the pads sealed the deal for me!

Not sure if you're still replying to comments but you're awesome for replying to as many as you did! Just bought one for some trapezius pain and tension in my upper left side. Do you think I need to be concerned with proximity to my heart? Using it on my back of course and have no history of heart disease. Thank you for your video!
Thanks, and you're welcome! As long as you are cleared by your doctor, that area should be fine. I do have a few other videos on TENS for the upper back/shoulder area if you want to take a look. You can find all my videos on my channel: th-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo
Just got one I’m picking it up later on today. I’m hopeful this helps with my chronic leg pain. The other day the cramping was so bad I was writhing in bed. I’m really hoping this will be a good solution; nothing else I’ve tried has worked so far, had this issue over a decade now and no diagnosis
After having total knee and hip replacement surgery I now have nerve pain in my legs. The nerve pain gets so bad I can't sleep at night I'm up and down by all night. It's a miracle if I get 4 hours of sleep. Would the tens help with the nerve pain I'm having?
This was incredibly informative. I have a mild concussion from hitting the back of my head, but the pain is travelling all down my back and thru out my upper shoulders, and I'd really like to save pain pills for when I need it the most. Thank you so much for creating this video! xx
Thanks for your help phone tips I'm still free to use that I bought mine at Walgreens a week ago and still nervous about using it I don't know why I just feel apprehensive them going to mess it up thanks again I hope I get the feel comfortable and started using this as my shoulder pain as arthritis and bursitis probably thanks to my dad and it's starting to get pretty bad where I can't not sleep even with ibuprofen . I'm 67 years old it's just been bothering me for the past 6 months thanks again all the best bye
So helpful! Can you do one that show where's to place the 4 pads L5/4, L5/S1 please? Have severe stenosis and nerve compression and trying to wean off pain meds to optimise functionality
I have some videos for placements on the back. You can find all my videos on my channel: th-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo, and you can use the search tool (the magnifying glass) under the banner on the right side to find specific videos/topics.
I have been told by a doctor and after xrays that my aging left knee has bone on bone, but a chiropractor on youtube said if you can bend your knee, it is not bone on bone. Still, he did not offer a treatment and so I have endured pain for over two years. Recently I received another important TH-cam tip, that when you have a deficient knee, the opposite (right) hip deteriates due to the extra work it must do due to the inability of the left knee to function and balance the weight on the body. I am starting a TENS Stimulation Unit to manage my pain and enjoyed your exact explanation on how to use it. I believe the knee procedure you offered was very accurate and I am hoping for relief so I will have better mobility. Would that work also on the right hip? Thank you for your input.
if you clean the skin before use and store them properly you can use them quite a few times! the skin oils and exposure to air are what make them lose their sticky
Hi Dr.Jo, thank you for your video. I just purchased a unit that has 4 ports. 2 can be configured for TENS and 2 for EMS simultaneously. So I have lots of options for simultaneous muscle groups. My main purpose TENS is pain relief for an L3 extricated hernia and EMS for legs, abs and arms during my long inactivity process. My question is, what combination TENS - EMS muscle groups would you recommend simultaneosly. And more importantly how long should I use for each function on a daily basis. I have options from 10 to 90 minute sessions. Many thanks in advance for your shared experience.
Great video - Thank you for taking the time to post this - very helpful. I'm currently dealing with a nerve problem in my lower back. Hope this helps ... Thanks again and all the best to you...!
Hey Dr. I suffer from neuropathy in my feet and legs this is the kind of thing that I should be using to help stimulate circulation? Oh disrupt the is due to back problems lower back problems in particular.
I have ordered one up and it has a 30 day return policy on it do you think I could expect any kind of relief or changes in that timeframe? And what would you recommend as far as how often it should be done? Thank you for your reply!

If you are looking more for pain relief, a TENS would probably be better.
Heyy Dr. Jo I have a a pain pump in my abdomen and metal in my lower back will this be safe? I want to use it on my lower back
When ending the treatment does the tens unit intensity have to be turned down gradually or can you just hit off button if not using timer?

Yes. It increases circulation and reduces inflammation. Blood flow is critical to healing.

After having total knee and hip replacement surgery I now have nerve pain in my legs. The nerve pain gets so bad I can't sleep at night I'm up and down by all night. It's a miracle if I get 4 hours of sleep.
Would the tens help with the nerve pain I'm having?
Damn I’m sorry to hear that I hope you find something to help you.
This was incredibly informative. I have a mild concussion from hitting the back of my head, but the pain is travelling all down my back and thru out my upper shoulders, and I'd really like to save pain pills for when I need it the most. Thank you so much for creating this video! xx
You're welcome!
I have the same problem but on my temples where did you put them?
Oops. I've got one on my wrist now and just turned down when you talked about contraction. My hand was jumping all over. : (

Great instructions! Thank you 🤘

Did it help?
Very informative!
Very helpful!
Should it be used before or after you exercise?
How many times can you use the pads? Can you use them over and over?
if you clean the skin before use and store them properly you can use them quite a few times! the skin oils and exposure to air are what make them lose their sticky
I use it about 15 minutes before and after running on my ankles for stimulation of the area that makes my ankles stronger.
TENS is not an muscle stimulator
It's doesn't strengthen your weak ankle muscles
Great work explaining the process in very simple way 👏👍
Thanks.
Thank you for clarification!

Great video!
Thanks!
Thank you Dr.

I'm currently dealing with a nerve problem in my lower back. Hope this helps ...
Thanks again and all the best to you...!
You're welcome. I hope it helps too.
I'd like to know if it helps you out or not? TIA
Someone said they use on their neck. I read not to use on neck. I place it on my shoulder close to neck.
The TENS unit that I got came with instructions saying never use it on the neck or face.
Hey Dr. I suffer from neuropathy in my feet and legs this is the kind of thing that I should be using to help stimulate circulation? Oh disrupt the is due to back problems lower back problems in particular.
TENS can sometimes help with neuropathy type symptoms. It just depends on how severe it is and what specifically is causing it.
I have ordered one up and it has a 30 day return policy on it do you think I could expect any kind of relief or changes in that timeframe? And what would you recommend as far as how often it should be done? Thank you for your reply!
You're welcome! That's usually enough time to know if it's going to help. TENS can be used 3-5 times a day.
Thanks Doc Jo!
You're welcome!
