This game was awesome and felt really fair, with lots of back and forth. The fact that people were running (what appears to be) a generous amount of instant-speed removal really helped.
The Pretender makes me happy. I don't think there was a set I liked more from when I started Magic than The Dark. There were really strong cards before it but the story and the feel were amazing.
Having made, played and piloted a Mairsil deck, I can agree you sometimes go for the same cards most games. The other issue I found with Mairsil is that you typically run into the issue of "do I cage this creature for Mairsil shenanigans, or do I cast it so I have extra blockers?" Typical Mairsil decks I've seen dont have a lot of creatures hanging out to just do what you want them to, as you wanna use most of their abilities more than once per turn, or are horrible cards by themselves (Shaku as an example, but in Mairsil, its a slam dunk). It was fun to watch Harry play it though and brought back some fond memories, like winning with Mirror MAd Phantasm and Lab Man while at 1 life XDXDXD
well one of the downsides to mairsil is that he is kinda like voltron and if you can deal with him before he reaches an infinite combo, then the deck doesnt do a hell of a whole lot. It's easier to deal with one creature than several, especially in a game that has a lot of single targeted removal and graveyard hate. It's kind of unfair how there are some strategies that have a ton of hate that almost everyone runs while others hardly have any. I try to put creatures in the deck that wants to be caged but can also win without Mairsil out, cause he does draw a lot of hate.
@@DrukenReaps Mairsil suffers from needing multiple effects attached to him, (caged cards), which usually means he is an easier target for removal, and if not then you have issues dealing with a board full of creatures. I am not saying it's impossible, but from my experience in using him, he greatly depends heavily on key cards you can cage to make him harder to remove. Unfortunately the only real viable way to win with him and not some other win con, (which you most certainly can do and probably need to have a back-up plan) is to go infinite with him. I don't really like infinite combos, but it is very difficult for him to win you the game without it. Not impossible, just difficult.
@@architectofdreams73 His effectiveness is going to depend greatly on the table you are at and which commanders you are up against but I've had good luck with him even without going infinite. I've used Tree of Perdition to set people to 4 life, infect, tokens, control locks. One of the few infinite things I've done was Oona Queen of the Fae. A majority of my deck however is interaction. Like take the most interactive deck and then double the interaction. Removal and counterspells are Mairsil's lifeblood. A close follow up to that is haste. I've been playing him since about 4 or 5 months after he came out. By far my favorite deck with all the silly things it has gotten to do. But absolutely terrible commander to play if you don't like infinite or even non-infinite combo. He is quite literally the most comboy of combo commanders.
@@DrukenReaps yeah, I originally picked up the precon cause I immediately saw the potential for Kess, but ended up enjoying Mairsil more. Plus he was quite a bit cheaper to build. I want to get the new Devil god so I can draw 7 cards with Mairsil. Lol
Love Mairsil, such a fun commander to play with! I often go for different things in a lot of games. Lots of different activated abilities to mess around with. Of course folks can and often do go for the most powerful every time but then that is on them making the deck linear.
I'm so sad Mairsil was taken out first, really sweet kill with the Valakut(s) though! And ya gotta love the infect kill, always a great end to a game! Great work as always :)
Hey muddstah I always wanted to ask if it's possible to write the date of recording of the game somewhere in the video/description? Just to know in what point in time it was played and what cards were available to players and so on? Thanks a lot!
Mairsil is possibly one of my favorite commanders of all time. So underrated and can easily take over the game. I really wish they would add him on mtgo. I only have 2 paper decks and he's at the helm of one of them.
I really loved the game. Like you said, I dont like Mairsil because its super linear and you have to hate it out as soon as the game starts or they can take over in an instant, so when Harry got blasted by two Valacuts I really enjoyed watching this :3 Also the other two takedowns were amazing.
Golos is a pretty fun commander everyone just complains about him because his ability is strong I love him though I have him in the 99 of my Esika/P Bridge Superfriends deck
@@TheLover4331 I mean personally I dislike him because he’s the best example of the problem with a lot of 5c commanders that being really strong and boring 5c good stuff.
That awkward moment when the infect deck is hated less than Golos decks. I wonder how Golos players feel sacrificing any dignity playing that broken commander.
I’m glad Mairsil is not a popular commander. It’s always a pain to play against and to keep track of all the abilities. It’s my highest salt score commander!
This was a great game. I know when I saw Golos, my mind was saying I know Golos has been in the spotlight long enough even though most players have different spins on him.
As a fellow Mairsil player, I felt like Harry was pretty nice to the table this game. I don't know what all was in his hand, of course, but he could definitely have bounced a few more permanents at no additional cost to himself.
that was a pretty neat episode. evra is a card i never had on my radar. mairsil a very disgusting threat the whole game and hard to handle. spoiler: i liked how everyone who killed someone died afterwards. mairsil was killed by golos, who then was killed by evra who then was killed by hapatra
No decklist for evra is pretty disappointing, I'm working on my own and looking for what I should have in the deck as a backup strategy for if evra dies
Harry was way too nice with his marisil once it had aetherling and galecaster thats 3 mana to bounce 3 things per cycle or use shaku once and bounce twice i think he had the game by that point
My thoughts exactly. I run a rather similar Mairsil build and I have no problem with being a complete menace. Blinks every player's second main phase and constant bouncing would have been the line I'd have gone with.
Something that should probably be pointed out to Trevor is that Vesuva cannot enter as valakut if they both enter at the same time; Vesuva needs a land that is already in play to copy. Hope he sees this!
Valakut isn’t legendary, but even if it was it would work the way that was demonstrated as both valakuts will trigger off the mountains before the legend rule makes you sacrifice one of them
Mairsil get the activated abilities from Aetherling, but does this not mean that he gets literally "Exile Aetherling etc." and not "Exile this creature" to blink Mairsil?
"If an activated ability of a card in exile with a cage counter on it references the card it’s printed on by name, treat Mairsil’s instance of that ability as though it referenced Mairsil by name instead. For instance, if Mairsil exiles Magus of the Mind, the cost to activate the ability includes sacrificing Mairsil, not sacrificing Magus of the Mind." Well... imho this is some kind of stupid as long as its not written in the effect box of the card.
@@glennzarat This is fairly standard. It's not some special Mairsil thing, any card which references itself in the card is assumed to read [[CARDNAME]] instead of its actual name. This comes up relatively often with mutate cards. Ironically, it doesn't happen with all cards, such as Mirror-Mad Phantasm, because it refers to a card named Mirror-Mad Phantasm. Which means if Mairsil activates its ability you err... you mill your whole deck :D

Great game. Equally balanced. Everyone killed someone. Except first player out of course. Removal was def essential
Before watching I fully expected this would be sarcasm, but I agree
“Golos, and if you don’t like it, imagine it’s Child of Alara”
Proceeds to watch Child tutor up Urborg and Field of the Dead when it etbs.
The new Child of Alara is very good.
you didnt read the orcale text smh
You can choose not to put urborg and field of the dead in your deck. You can’t choose for child of alara to destroy all your non land permanents
That mairisil deck is scary once it gets going. Especially if it gets an aetherling caged
That opening is inspirational ! Love all of the Generic goblin noises
Pj can do a good epic voice
