I got into pauper because of your videos! And it's been so fun! Pauper is easily the best 60 card format in magic right now and I don't see that changing anytime soon!
Finally managed to convice some people in my area to build pauper decks! Its been way too long since i had the chance to really play the format. Had to replace almost half my Tortured Existence defk, and finally had a reason to build UR Thunderous Wrath

Pauper is the best format. Gameplay feels like old school Magic and the meta is diverse. Iconic cards like Lightning Bolt, Brainstorm, and Counterspell are staples. And WOTC is not financially incentivized to ruin it
@@Dysfunctional_Reprint Living up to your username haha. I tried so hard at 3 different LGS but commander and modern just dominated all of the different days. I live in Wisconsin, USA and Pauper is not played much in the area I am in (one of the higher 3-4 populated areas).
Love pauper, one of my all time fav formats. Idk why it's so hard to get people to play, the power levels are what most people say they want. Full deck for $60-100 bucks and you can bling them out for fun.
I played pauper a lot last year but a problem I faced was that while we had a lot of players, you saw the same decks week after week. It's not a problem limited to pauper, obviously modern and pioneer gets less varied since decks are more expensive. Over time, people got bored of it. It was just a lot better to play online, where you didn't have to drive up to the store, and you got to queue up for way more games than just the four rounds in paper. I hate to say it (coming from someone who loves paper magic), but that's how I felt.

Pauper has been a great way to play 60-card 1v1 again. The brews are fun and it's affordable to just make a janky $20 deck that may or may not be good, but it let's you explore ways to make the deck better for affordable prices
For commander I’ve been doing a mix of real cards and pauper , I buy precons and sell the 10-15 most expensive cards and most of the time that will cover the cost of the precon, then I proxy the cards I sold . Now I’m not sure how well people will take it at lgs I haven’t been to own yet 😅
I've still got my Dimir rat lock pauper deck that I built based off your deck tech video from like 4 years ago! It's one of my favourite decks to play in casual games with friends, and I've been tweaking and upgrading it over the years as they've printed more and more useful utility cards for it. Huge thanks for all the love you've given to pauper over the years!! 💞💖
Thanks prof! I don’t have my magic cards anymore, but if I ever wanted to play paper again it’d be pauper (for budget reasons). Always glad to see the format get some love, maybe it’ll convince ppl to try the format with me.

I was a legacy and vintage player only but nobody in my town can afford or play those formats so I switched to pauper and I'm glad I did. First off it's cheap to play and way more people play it where I live. I do think it's one of the best formats for magic.
Our friend group started playing pauper for fun, to take a break from commander from time to time, and now we are completely hooked up! Love to see pauper videos!
Btw, i'm from Brazil, and Pauper alongside with commander are huge in our LGS. And very fun. Every tuesday and saturday the game shop makes tournaments with credit and promos for prize. It's a lot of fun. And i faced so many different builds. The guys are always trying something new
FINALLY AND UPDATED PAUPER VIDEO FROM THE PROF- this is my all time favorite format, and in my opinion the best right now, (despite standard being really fun) the price or should i say Lack of price, makes it more than worth it compared to other formats.
With Christmas coming up, I thought it would be fun to make a few cheap decks for my cousin and I to play like the good old days. As I looked up the best ways to play magic for little money I stumbled upon Pauper. I've never played this format. This seems like a great, competitive, budget format! I really enjoy magic but I enjoy magic when your deck has strategy and thought behind it. Pauper seems like it will give me the feeling of competitive magic without the price tag that caused me to leave the game over a decade ago. I found a local game store and ordered four, competitive Pauper decks for a total of... $100. Thanks TCC for exposing me to a format that make Magic possible for me again!
I got into pauper because of your content. I ended up making a ton of decks from cards that people were going to throw away. Now I have a lot of fun and janky decks that my friends and I can play with.
With Pauper gaining popularity and Foundations being as promising as it is for casual play Magic enters a new era. Can't wait for Foundations and Pauper games on Shuffle Up and Play. :D Imagine pros playing the Foundations Starter Box set and only using the cards within it, showing what magic they can do with these highly balanced casual play cards.
As a new player I made a standard deck with bloomburrow cards, only to then see that everyone locally only plays commander. Then I made my commander deck by grabbing some more singles and boosters. And the lost terribly to a guy with a LOTR deck who got pretty mad I wasn't playing at his pace. 🫠 Honestly I want to play standard so I might just switch to playing on Arena.
Pauper is absolutely incredible! I used to be mostly a Limited and EDH player, but I've completely switched to Pauper. Most of my friends now have at least 3 Pauper decks, and our local FNM has almost entirely transitioned to Pauper events. We even have tournaments in Poland that gather over 100 players! While it might not be quite as big as Paupergeddon in Italy, it's incredibly inspiring to see so many people, especially newcomers, participating in these major events.
I love pauper. In my opinion it’s the best format for fun and price. Even got a pauper cube. Sadly, no one in the Louisville area does events for it (as of the writing of this post). So it’s just me and my wife playing each other 😂
I literally ordered cards for some pauper decks just the other day lol Super stoked to have something else to take part in events at my LGS besides EDH or pre-release. Go Pauper woot
Pauper has a good following at my regular LGS. And it is still growing! I'll be there tonight for our regular game and it looks like we'll have one or two new players joining us. 👍
Happy to 'report' a friend and me convinced our LGS a year ago to do monthly Pauper events and now we have a sizeable community there for it where there was none. It's a lot of fun. (: Unfortunately for me, they decided not long ago to host the nonthly Budget EDH tournament on the same day, but I am kind of proud seeing half as many EDH players maximum as Pauper player on these days. Even though I am evil and won one these tournaments with UR Solfatarra. :D
a lot of what you said about pauper applies to legacy too (besides being affordable ofc :D) but that's exactly why i love pauper! it truly is an eternal format
The title should have been ‘How to Play a Magic: the Gathering FORMAT for the least amount of money’. There are even cheaper ways to play casually. I just buy bulk lots and make a variety of decks from that. • You can make packs for mixed chaos drafts • Casual 60 card duel decks of your own from the limited pool in one bulk lot • I’ve made custom jumpstart packs from a box for shuffle up and play. You can get bulk lots with varying numbers of rarity cards. I’ve gotten a 1000 commons and uncommons for 10 dollars or less. It’s the ultimate way to play Magic the game for the least amount of money. :)
Not sure who'll read this but another amazing thing about the current meta of Pauper is it's VERY rock-paper-scissors, which means a lot of these decks have great matchups against some, but bad matchups against others. It makes local metalgaming super interesting. See a lot of Terror locally? Play Mono Red, Orzhov Blade, or Gruul Ramp! See a lot of Gruul Ramp? Play Broodscale! It's awesome, the format is so, so sick and has been for a while now.
I totally agree, you also see a lot of brews and unpopular decks, there is a lot of variety at the local scene. Last week tireless tribe made an appearance and did pretty good, I went to hunt down Gruul ramp tweaking my own list to run 6 land destruction spells, paid off as I got paired against one, super fun times in the format.
The problem with pauper really is just availability. Every store in town either runs Modern/Legacy (which I cannot afford), or Commander. Between weekend commander night, Tuesday commander night, Wednesday modern, Thursday Legacy, and Friday Chaos Draft (seriously, why do stores not just draft a single set anymore?), it feels like there's no way to find people with which to play pauper. :(
I've been so excited about the idea of playing pauper for like a year. I wanna put together a handful of decks that I can mix n match pitting against each other with my friends. I think I'm gonna do a delver deck cuz I love delver, some synthesizer variant, maybe cycle storm and broodscale to start
Thanks for the signature on my Commander Buddy btw! My friend was able to grab some signatures from you in Vegas and brought back the signed buddy! I’d love to thank you in person at pauper locals!
Pauper is so great. Even if you don't want to build top tier Pauper decks, it's a great format to play casually with friends! My friends mostly play Commander, but I put together some Pauper decks from my bulk, and we finally have a 60 card 1v1 format we can play. I hear Pauper Cube is also great fun.
Always great to see such a diversity of decks in the format! Any thoughts towards doing a similar update video for Premodern? Or maybe even some gameplay on a future Shuffle Up? I know you're familiar with the format, but it's really been growing the last few years (just ask Rebel or Mengu).
Regarding the "either/or" for red and black Skyfisher decks, my favorite pauper deck says "why not both". From what I've seen, combined with a Wildfire package, adding both to turn it into a Mardu deck is not only pretty easy, but makes the deck 10 times more capable to pivot from early game to long-term grind than with either of the two double-color combinations :)
pauper my beloved! my pet archetype is Tortured Existence, definitely not a Tier 1 deck, but a really interesting and fun graveyard toolbox deck, named after its key card absolutely recommend Pauper to everyone!
MH3 really was a great set for pauper. I've recently switched exclusively to pauper and the possibilities are soooooo varied and interesting. I love the freedom of expression it gives me.
As someone who plays a lot of pauper (every week sometimes more then once a week) I’m very surprised writhing chrysalis wasn’t mentioned once. The card is the best/worst MH3 common it’s pushed to hell and back.
"These decks never rotate!" Sure, but many of the decks in this video had analogs from a decade ago when my community had a robust scene, but none of them look remotely the same. Affinity was a tier 3 deck at best. Turbo Fog was Simic relying on a mill package centered around Jace's Erasure and Curse of the Bloody Tome. Glint Hawk/Skyfisher was fringe. Delver of Secrets and Gary were the most powerful things happening at the time. The decks never rotate, but you'll have to buy into a new deck regularly to keep up with power creep. Not a lot since it's always commons, but it's pretty disingenuous when the reality is players have to change their decks regularly if they want to stay current.
I buy sleeves and bulk cards from my LGS and print proxies at the library for about 40¢/9 cards. I just started but I have 4 commander decks and can host people who don’t usually play :)
My playgroup invented the format "european penny", which is basically Legacy but every card has to have an average price of 0.50€ or less on cardmarket, resulting in very affordable decks with underused rares

Pauper looks more amazing than I thought. Gruul Ramp is calling me.
Battle box is super underrated and extremely budget friendly
As someone who plays a lot of pauper (every week sometimes more then once a week) I’m very surprised writhing chrysalis wasn’t mentioned once. The card is the best/worst MH3 common it’s pushed to hell and back.
I love pauper, and madness burn is my favorite deck right now
Has anyone seen AnyNewProvince lately? I figured the format was dead when he stopped posting content, I hope he's well.
"These decks never rotate!"
Sure, but many of the decks in this video had analogs from a decade ago when my community had a robust scene, but none of them look remotely the same.
We need more Pauper Shuffle Up ❤
Wow! Pauper is such an affordable format! Unfortunately I cannot find half the cards I need for the decks I've been interested in playing
I’ve played Pauper Commander and it was alot of fun.
I buy sleeves and bulk cards from my LGS and print proxies at the library for about 40¢/9 cards. I just started but I have 4 commander decks and can host people who don’t usually play :)
I still got cards to the old pauper elves and pauper dredge decks that were featured on TCC years ago!
Pauper commander no doubt is the most fun and balanced format imo
14:55 I never knew Thermokarst existed, but green Stone Rain 💎💎🔥 is such power 💎🌳🌳
My playgroup invented the format "european penny", which is basically Legacy but every card has to have an average price of 0.50€ or less on cardmarket, resulting in very affordable decks with underused rares
