Amen. You hit the nail on the head. Cult of personality. Its an issue not just with HiFi and TH-cam. Its unfortunately one of the top issues affecting almost everything in our world today.
As with all of us, our ears and our ability to articulate what we hear improves over time. In my humble opinion / observation Christy has progressed quicker than most. I am really digging this unplugged segment.
Best 'Unplugged' to date, thank you! Your comment about people not sticking up for Onkyo if the tables were turned is one of the truest things I've heard in a long time. Sad.... But true. Can we have a video on your Roadhouse thoughts just so I don't potentially waste an evening??? Sounds like Kristi has some serious views on it 😂
Not me here at all for the fireworks! 😅 Andrew and Kristi together, as always, being the voice of logic and common sense. Nothing more. If there are people that don’t like that, well maybe they should check out some other channels? Or products? Or read some materials? Either way, thank you. Love the episode. Hope everyone is having a lovely Friday!
You both are creating a good community to discuss the tabu's in audio, and I have always appreciated that you review AV receivers, Tv's, soundbars, even thoug I just watch the Hi-Fi and AVR's. I started with AVR's prior stereo, and AVR's give you a ton of background to calibrate the sound in your system. Regarding the Wiim Amp, I tried it and compare it to a Michi X3 and Yamaha AVR V6 with a pair of LS50's fed by a Chord Qutest and I can definately say there there is a long way for the wiim to achieve high fidelity and power the ls50's (I mean, of course these are difficult and that is the point, to strech the wiim to its limits), regardless, I am keeping it for a bed room small setup because it is capable enough to enoy it. I completely like the approach on your channel at 100%. Congratulations.
Just do your thing....for those of us that have been listening to your channel for 4 years we get it. I understand the story and narrative that you are pushing. I think you are open minded and I love the narrative that only I have to like my system. Bravo. My gripes would be elsewhere. Don't listen to the haters. Just do your thing!
HI Andrew! Long-time fan, first time commenter-- I have a WiiM amp paired with JBL A170s with an ELAC Sub1010 in my 12x20 Living room and It maxes out at or near 90db at 10' away (normal listening volume for me is 70-80db). The A170 is speced as a 6 ohm nominal with 89db sensitivity. I have had it for a few months and it hasn't gone into protect with or without the sub running. I have also used my Emotiva B1+ which are less sensitive with no issues and similar results. I would never claim that ithe wiim is the best of the best or a 'giant killer'. I own several amps that are superior, and they should be because they are much more expensive. My opinion is that you get what you pay for and I am not dissapointed so far and I think it delivers good value and ease of use for the price. It is also much smaller than a traditional AVR which a selling point for some. I am curious about what type of load that you were connecting it to that made it go into protect? Cheers, D
All I have to say is the WiiM amp and the streamers are packed with features and for the price it’s very hard to find anything better. Yes the WiiM amp has its place , however I use it in my office for a 2ch setup to listen to music ,and also in my master bedroom connected to my tv . Both is more then enough volume and I really love the WiiM amp . I have the WiiM streamer plus pro connected to my 28k system and love it . I use WiiM as a multi room home audio solution and it even works with your echos . Again for the features that WiiM has, it’s very hard to beat it specially if you’re doing multi room audio and you want quality sound.
You seem to miss the point slightly. Andrew has said many times already that the streamers from that brand are lovely. Very competitive products. However, the Amp itself is just not. That’s why it was compared to Onkyo in the last weeks review and although I wouldn’t say it has less features, it might just have different features from WiiM that the latter doesn’t have. The problem is, that the Brand itself marketed their product completely wrong and created an insane amount of unfounded hype around it. And as soon as it was actually put properly to its paces, it feel flat. And for those who are buying not to listen in the near field situation or for high volume, it’s just not a good product. Onkyo will be better, only $100, maybe $200 will buy you a far more capable system that will be able to open the full potential of your system. It’s probably a very good amp for a desktop, it’s compact, has a bit of power and will work fine for that. But then also, you might ask why not just buy Kanto YU powered speakers, or Klipsch 5s? 1: probably cheaper for either one compared WiiM+speakers 2: better sound either way. So yeah…
Another Great One. Love the new format. Nice balance between Informative and Pointing out the Absurd. I'm a long time Onkyo receiver fan. It has always been a great "Bang for the Buck with ALL the Bells and Whistles" brand. I stepped up to Onkyo's higher brand "Integra" with a DRX-5.3 Receiver and haven't looked back. Have you heard, reviewed, or had plans to review any Integra product?
I have been an Integra user and former customer for a long time. We're trying to bring their products to this channel but no word yet on if or when it will happen.
I had one of those Onkyo AVRs you could cook fresh Belgian waffles on after a few minutes of operation. Also sounded great, had plenty of inputs, was reliable, featured a 24/192 dac. Hope Integra hangs in there. Not a brand you hear a lot about, generally excellent nonetheless.
Don't forget, the Pioneer Elite VSX LX505 has been the cheaper Onkyo RZ50 option. It doesn't get the ❤ it deserves. I admire how passionate Andrew is about cutting through the marketing BS. Over hyped features/products are really frustrating. Thank you for taking the slings and arrows while reviewing products for what they ARE and NOT for what they CLAIM to be.
The Pioneer and Integra products are all excellent lately! Obviously there are similarities with Onkyo, but I don't think a lot of folks can go wrong choosing one of those three brands.
I saw part of the Onkyo 3100 review and thought it was a good idea to compare it to the Wiim amp. For me, the essence of a good review is to compare products that attempt to solve the same problem but come at it from different directions. I watch because Andrew has a broad knowledge base and can make those comparisons. I'm sure the Wiim works for a non-critical listener who wants an easy-to-use solution. Anyone who has been around audio equipment would be more than a little curious about the Onkyo's sound quality. Everyone needs to remember that all products have limitations and as a consumer I just want to know what they are and see how they align with my needs.
Have had my TX-NR709, which was one of the AVRs that had trouble with their HDMI boards. When mine failed around 2015 or 16 Onkyo fixed it and been GREAT ever since. 😊
15 years of age, love HiFi, got my own Onkyo. TOTALLY LOVE this channel. People my age don't even have speakers. Best case scenario they own a JBL party speaker😅 In my expectations.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews They actually heard it, and this particular Weekend one of my friends will pick up his first amplifier, Mission success. We have to get more young people Into Hifi
I also bought WiiM amp after watching your video. It is working very well., has Sub out, hdmi arc & cheap. Watching all your videos…Love from INDIA 😍😍🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Thank you. Always enjoy your product reviews. You guys are awesome and informative 😊and I think every body has a different opinion on Hfi stuff and that’s ok. At the end of the day enjoy what you can afford and makes you happy. Thank you Kristi 😊👍🏿
I cannot believe people get this upset about audio.. omg lol. Adults acting like this over audio!? I continue to learn by watching your chanel and a couple others. I love your work, keep it up, ignore the trolls. HA HA.
I bought a Wii amp and absolutely loved it's feature set. Streaming worked perfectly, hdmi etc. A great, thorough set of features. But the sound fell short. Yes, it sounds just a bit too lean. I wanted to love it fully but the sound held it back. Full disclosure, I was comparing it to products that cost 4+ times as much. But the sound quality was noticeably off to me. If I was on a tight budget I would have kept the Wiim-- it didn't sound bad but it was worth it to me to pay more.
Hey guys! A comment on a wholly different topic: One thing I've sort of taken for granted with your channel is the audio quality (recording/mastering), even though I usually listen through decent enough gear. Recently swapped to Beyerdynamic DT1770 headphones and noticing some seriously nice audio recording/mastering from these here videos. Sounding REALLY good, especially compared to "the usual" production value here on YT!
Thank you so much, @IRON_PANDA. I appreciate you noticing. We have a multi-stage process for mastering each episode, a process that admittedly takes a fair amount of time--not to mention different software for each step.
So glad you discussed the WiiM amp. Thanks for always being honest with us, sticking to the facts. That's what's important, maintaining your integrity. By the way, I jumped when the explosion happened. 🤣🤣
This whole discussion can be summed up in one word, SHRINKFLATION! Watts today are just not as big as they used to be. I own a WIIM Amp that I use in a desktop system. I really like the WIIM Amp in this application - it has a nice tone and plays plenty loud for desktop listening. But, in my opinion it is not suitable to be used in a main listening system in anything but a really small room. I have recently been pulling out some of my retired hi fi equipment and connecting them up into new systems. Most recently, I connected up a NAD3155 that I originally purchased around 1990 with a pair of Phase Technology PC 60 mk II speakers (also from around 1990) and a WIIM Pro Plus as a source. On paper, the WIIM Amp with 60 watts @8 ohms should be slightly more powerful than the NAD3155+Pro Plus, which is rated 55 watts @8 ohms. Yea, right! The NAD stomps all over the WIIM Amp every day and twice on Sunday. In a movie analogy, the NAD is Godzilla and the WIIM Amp is Tokyo! The WIIM Amp is a good product, but it needs to stay in its own lane.
Another great video guys. Thank you. I get brand loyalty, but I DON’T get the inability for some to accept criticism. Seems like Wiim folks almost take offense when discussing their products. For me, the hobby is about fun in the music…❤️✌️
Hi Kristie - I truly appreciate how both you and Andrew are touting how well both tonality and price wise this brand is. There have been way too many haters here and in many other channels that keep hanging the HDMI issues of long ago over the brands head. Both Yamaha and Denon came out with defective 2.1 HDMI boards - no one spanks them for this.
I remember an episode of the Orville where they visit a planet where social media Upvotes and Downvotes are judge, jury, and executioner. I giggled about some of the audiophile community while thinking about that episode while you two were chatting and forced to OVER qualify every statement you made. You two are brave for making this comment. These are so much fun! Keep it up!
TH-cam channel Erin's Audio also tested the amp section of the WiiM Amp and it fell flat on it's face. So yeah, only for easy to drive speakers AND low volume listening / near field... and even then just an OK (barely) sounding amp. Simply go with the WiiM PRO and an AVR, Integrated or as I am doing... a Preamp processor with outboard amplifier.
My first reply from a subscriber to your channel of 2years or so. I always look forward to seeing and hearing your reviews from Melbourne Australia. Keep up your sincere honest reviews because that's what i am getting from you Rob and Kristy ❤️
Well said Andrew about the WiiM, some people have almost lost their minds about this amp, it does seem to have reached cult status of which I am very suspicious.
Excellent video again guys thanks. The comparison of the WiiM amp to the Onkyo is perfectly fair in a dollar to dollar face off. They are very different devices and are for very different uses so obviously there will be variations and differences. Those uses are not always what some folks expect. Either way, the only one who has to like the sound of your ... oh wait, nevermind. You made it clear in the video so absolutely agreed and still love the little WiiM amp for what it is but the Onkyo still looks great for it's own application.
I love this take on the WiiM Amp (and their marketing strategy). I’ve been curious about the Amp for a while. Funny enough I also own an Onkyo NR5100 and love it (mosly) for home theatre and music sessions. All this to say, thanks for the thoughts and for keeping it real. Cheers!
I have watched your review of Wiim Amp and some other ones that say Wiim Amp is the best thing invented since hot water. I like how you addressed the issues with this device. I just subscribed to your channel (and ordered a Wiim Amp, since it would fit my needs :) ).
@@andrewrobinsonreviews It seems it does work for me! :) Desktop setup, paired with Cambridge Audio Minx min22, and an X201 subwoofer. More than enough amplification and awesome sound. :D
The single largest issue Onkyo has ever had was the BGA style connection for it's audio processing chips (primarily the DTS, but others as well).. the unit would heat up which wasn't a problem.. but when it cooled down, the rapid change caused the solder connection to micro-fracture... these would accumulate/compound over time and eventually the processor would simply be unable to process the incoming audio signal... this process has been addressed and is no longer an issue
Always enjoyable listening to you two, and I agree with Andrew. If you're gonna market your product as a home theater solution, then be ready to have it compared to *any* other similarly-priced HT solution. Some people just get super-defensive about things they buy or plan to buy. All they want is for someone to validate their purchase/favorite brand with 100% glowing praise rather than tell them the truth about a product.
Hey you 2…. It may not mean anything. But I feel you 2 are by far the best reviews. Why? Because you’re real. On that, could I ask if you could do a review of ifi Aurora. I’m in development of a tiny off grid home and I can’t bring myself to not having music.
Facts (video reference, watch it!😊)! Andrew and “the real star of the show” Kristi are an amazing mesh for reviews! I started watching over a year ago when updating my home theatre and still come back for the awesome presentation, education and the love of hifi. Kristi and Andrew, when the inevitable nay sayers go too far, hang in there, stick together and keep rocking it! I imagine most of us that probably rarely comment are fans and even if we may disagree from time to time, we love your content and that your honesty and sincerity come through. Whenever you get close to feeling burnt out, take some time for yourselves and focus on one another. You guys are a rare match (that are a blast to watch) and keep fighting for that. 😊 My wife and I have been married 25 years now and it can be a fight sometimes to make it through all the crap 💩 in life and humans sometimes. I think I may have only commented once or twice, but felt strongly enough to spend the time to let you guys know there are many of us that appreciate you and see through the melodrama of the few irrational people!! Keep up the great work and put each other first. 👍
WiiM gained its rep as a good budget streamer, and I use the WiiM Pro for that...and really like it. It provides an inexpensive all-in-one solution for so many services, from Roon to Spotify. When looking at the pricing and consider the form factor, it is just silly that people would have an expectation of any type of hi-fidelity sound from the WiiM Amp. And Andrew, YOU BLOW EVERYTHING AWAY! Hilarious. Love your channel, thanks for the reviews.
Another great video by the Dynamic Duo! I understand that the audio industry needs to doa better job of addressing the needs of the diferent generations. And I would consider more compact units IF they were soundly built by companies that understand physics and how you cannot get around the laws of physics by putting wimpy electronics in a scenario where they are not designed to be. Powered speakers, as suggested by Andrew & Kristi is part of the answer if you wish to miniaturize home entertainment electronics. I think we need the big companies to design and offer compact units for the individuals that want them as a viable alternative for the under 35 crowd.
Absolutely! There's nothing wrong with farming out a job to a well-regarded individual or company as long as you don't give them too many restrictions. Such cooperation can keep this hobby alive
I am running the WiiM amp for my outdoor system, and it works great. It is powering 2 pairs of Polk Atrium 8 SDI in parallel (4 ohms/channel), with a Crown XLS1002 and a Dayton outdoor subwoofer, crossover set at 80 Hz. I airplay the audio from the outdoor Apple Tv to the WiiM amp for TV, and this solved a low volume issue I was having with a Bluesound Node when using the same way. Music sounds good, I've had it at reasonable levels with no shutdowns so far. This seems like a good use case in addition to a desktop or small living room 2.1 system.
Again a great episode of Trash Talk....( love the original name ) I started with WIIM, Aiyima and Jamo, now wanting to go up the ladder with SMSL and Kanto, but never loose focus to get to ZU Audio, Focal, Chord, and more high end game components, everyone has its path to follow, just have ti enjoy it. Best of luck you guys, keep it going. ill keep enjoying your reviews...just dont loose the focus and wrap it up Robinson.
You can get an Onkyo txnr 6050 for about 300 bucks that is just one previous generation has the newer onkyo dac, 7.2 atmos 90 watts per channel, streaming, hdm1 2.1 that works lol etc best deal hands down for someone starting :) Love you guys! Your continued objectivity is much appreciated!!
Uh, I think Andrew’s premise of the Onkyo/Wiim comparison was: amps to amps aka apples to apples. Onkyo IS a better solution if only that it has authoritative sound that does NOT distort as easily as Wiim. If people have now shifted the value proposition perspective that Wiim is really JUST a streamer with option to amp … ok cool. and it could be compared BlueSound Node BUT hey let’s not pretend the Wiim wasn’t being touted as a kickass value AMP on YT reviews initially OR that it shouldn’t be taken to task for it when the ONKYO **is** a MUCH better value …as an amp 😤😤
Fair points. I don't think I'll ever be attracted to the idea of WiiM as an amp. I absolutely love it (WiiM Mini AirPlay2) as a streaming solution in my vintage setup but, even then, I slot a better DAC in between the streamer and the receiver/amp. I am, however, really interested in future reviews of the Geshelli Labs Zoofa.
Their streamers have proven to be very good, and I like/love their App. If they did what EverSolo did, and went with a better third party amp solution for the Amp, boy, they likely WOULD'VE had a "giant killer" on their hands.
well said guys especially for the wiim amp, it has gotten suspiciously high praises and as you said this is misleading to say the least. On another note, I really like watching your channel, not primarily because of the reviews (since no data is offered and a lot of it is room dependent we can only rely on those that much) but also because of the presentation, the interesting views, insights, stories shared and the really beautiful way the content is recorded. this is where you have differentiated your channel from all the rest and it is appreciated.
Respectfully, we show data --albeit maybe not as much data as some would like, but we do show some. Additionally, even in the face of copious amounts of data, a product's performance is still going to be somewhat to largely room or environment dependent. All that said, thank you so much for watching and for your comment! Have a great rest of your day!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews true you show some measurements in terms of the frequency responce but my comment was not intented to highlight what your channel lacks but rather what the channel accomplished which makes it so good. I believe offering extensive data would come in the way of that. So personally i enjoy the channel for the whole experience because frankly I am not interested in buying anything at the moment so i think it is awesome that i am still interested in watching
I only have two things. 1. Every Wiim amp or streamer is going to be in the trash in 10 years. 2. Play The Smile’s song Bending Hectic… loud. That’s all for me. Loving these additional episodes.
Clearly I missed something happening with the Wiim amp but your response was logical and nuanced. Maybe that's the issue, the internet can't do nuance. And video review titles for chi-fi stuff in general seem to be "sensationalized." I think it's great there is enthusiasm but not to such an extreme extent that it becomes toxic.
There must be something to say about how ALL social media comment sections have turned into accusatory anger chambers. I have seen ridiculous accusations and unwarranted claims on Instagram and Facebook about products, people, etc., and I don't think TH-cam is safe from it at all. I'm personally glad you two didn't join the hype train over the WiiM amp. There's just no way something that good can be true. Thanks for keeping it real, ESPECIALLY for those who have tight budgets.
I run a WIIM amp in my basement office driving a couple of Jamo speakers in 2 channel because of its small size form factor but run Denon AVR in my living room where we run a 7.2 surround for home theater with JBL 100 classics as the front channel. I also use NAD running Polk speakers in my music room so I think the key is you pick the right equipment for the room you are in
Yeah I don’t have any interest in the Wiim… but I do think the review was a little odd. What with connecting it to a pair of $7000 Cornwalls. The Wiim is a lifestyle product. It’s not for enthusiasts or, gasp, audiophiles. I still say you connect it to a pair of low impedance, affordable bookshelves and this thing will do just fine. My desktop system consists of a Topping DX1, Fosi V3, a pair of Kanto passives and an old Pioneer 8” sub (from the Andrew Jones system). These class D amps are amazing with the right application. And maybe Wiim is marketing this in the wrong way but I still think the average Joe’s idea of hometheater and an enthusiasts idea of HT are two totally different things. This thing would probably crush a soundbar.
I saw a comment on your other video where a guy used the logic that because heaps of reviewers were saying the WiiM amp was bad that it was because there was some wide spread conspiracy perpetrated by other manufacturers, instead of the simpler explanation that the product just wasn’t that good. 😂
Yeah, I vaguely remember that comment too. I love how folks are so quick (and eager) to accept a bigger, more elaborate conspiracy when the simpler answer is often the right one. The simpler answer being; many of these brands flood the market with inexpensive products, pay or incentivize people to create content on these products, promote said content all over the Internet (with and without the creator's knowledge), offer deals or sales regularly to drive further traffic , rinse and repeat. To be clear, I don't fault WiiM for being good at marketing. Their ability to achieve a shocking level of market penetration in such a short period of time is something that maybe should be studied. But this notion that it EVERYONE ELSE besides WiiM (or the brand in question) is somehow to blame, at fault or up to something is laughable to the point of being insane. But then again, people love a good conspiracy, because it's often more entertaining than the truth.
I think everything you said comparing the two makes sense. I think it’s crazy that wiim markets the amp for home theater. Now using as an option or tv solution to opt out of using a sound bar makes sense. It also would be an amazing solution to basically take a passive speaker and turn it into a simple solution almost like a powered speaker … idk it seems like the amp has a lot of potential, If it could only deliver on what the marketing says.
@robinsonbrand, I agree 100% with you on the Onkyo comparison. Wiim is a software company coming into the amp game. Great first attempt, but needs work, which I’m confident they’ll do on the next version of this. Imagine what your review would have been if it performed flawlessly or even as advertised! For similar price (and I think this is what you’re getting at), you get an established audio company with decades of experience providing value AND performance, which is frankly what I’m most interested in. Yes, both have value; yes both have some same, some different but not competing uses. Thanks for bringing this, as well as other options to the table to consider. 🙃
Really appreciate your WIIM review. I think WIIM has the enthusiasm they do not just fir the price, but the form factor, and the user interface living on the phone. And yeah, once you see it, i mentally place it on a desktop, no matter the WIIM marketing material.
For me, the selling point was the size and inclusion of HDMI. I almost went with SVS soundbase pro, but it's twice the cost. I got the wiim amp to use on my deck with two klipsch AW650 and a projector for outdoor movies. Hoping it's enough to drive those speakers, not looking for top quality sound. This thing will fit in an outdoor electrical box so I can leave it up and connected.
We ain't always on the same page on any given topic or budget or definition of "affordable" but I feel confident that whatever opinions you give are your truths and any stats given are objective. What else could I ask for. Y'all are great. I wanted to get the Wiim amp but am glad I waited for it to get into the wild more and it's faults to be discovered. No product is perfect even if its only flaw is an expensive price tag. I think the Wiim is likely a great product for some people and would love to make use of their streaming app but I think it's issues would be to big for my situation. Likely will go the route of saving for a marantz stereo 70s and upgrading things like phono preamp later. That is if I decide I don't like the vintage realistic receiver I'm running my turntable on better. Anyways rant over. Keep doing what y'all like how ya like to do it.
I have been watching you 2 for 5 years at least and enjoyed your videos and to tell you the truth I watch and listen 👂 and then if I like a product that you review and liked I will go and listen in real time to see if I enjoyed it or not . Enjoy your day.
Good on you guys for mentioning Wiim's 'exuberant' marketing on the Amp - they make _great_ little devices, but I would think any moron would realize it's not replacing a dedicated AVR. They're great for whole-house streaming and even using _with_ an existing AVR tho. Thanks guys.
I always felt the reviews that hyped up the Wiim were paid by the company. It’s hilarious it’s being marketed as a giant killer when an affordable NAD crushes it.
as for the onkyo, make sure you learn the unilluminated buttons (at least the tx-626), because on the receiver you won't see anything unless it's daylight. They are unfortunately not alone in this on the "knegar" (working, budget) market.
Full disclosure... I own a WiiM Amp for my desktop setup...love it for nearfield listening. Not sure I want it powering towers in my living room. I think the thing I like the most about it is the app. I use to control...eq/bass management, source etc etc... I'm no HiFi expert so I'm wondering why more AVR/Integrated Amp manufacturers don't have app control with Bass Mgmt and EQ instead of a crummy supplied remote that hasn't changed much since the late 80's??? or Maybe they do and I'm just missing something special out there in the Sub $1K market?
I bought the Wiim amp after hearing good things and I am new to this. It’s probably the best sound I’ve heard since the big home boom boxes back in the day. I have them hooked up to the Q acoustics 3030i. With a klipsch sub And I can’t even imagine if I think that sounds good. Can’t wait for the Marantz and the more premium amps. I do have mine at my desk. Either way if you like it that’s all that matters.
I thought that wiim was a good video because you're right they have been trying to sell it as a home theater system and you showed what you can get with the Onkyo AVR for the same price. It cracks me up what people get upset about. First world problems.
I think the Onkyo/Wiim comparison was necessary and right on time. A friend of mine was trying to figure out what to get out of an av receiver and Wiim. He got the Onk 6100 for around$400 give or take.. Personally, I just plug a Roku, Onn device, Xbox or whatever into the HDMI's on my old Yamaha RXA 770 and have endless streaming and power. I don't even use the receiver's onboard streaming. Shucks, I'll just plug one of those round Wiims into the AV receiver's HDMI if I want one
All this is why I absolutely hate it when I see the "giant killer" or " this product will destroy X", because that is usually looking at either a number of features on this supposed giant killer, but not on how properly those features work, and often not looking at build quality and most of all not knowing what I'm personally looking for in a product. And yeah, on the internet we seem to like thinking other people are idiots for their choices. I've often heard people referring to new car buyers as dumb and supposedly the cleaver people are those who buy used cars, and I think to myself, "...but used cars are not made 'used', someone had to own it first". Thanks guys for doing great work, keep doing what you do.
Love it. I thought I heard you say “join is again at hifi ungloved” at the end. I thought that it was quite apt. I very much enjoy your content. It feels like you are constantly having to defend your production choices to your audience now. Is that all part of it?
I think you're being up front and are correct in taking Wiim at their marketing word. Wiim positioned their Amp at a certain market and level... so take them at their word and judge them for it. At their price point, I would say its targeted to the 20 something post grad crowd just starting off w a small apartment where they can run their TV sound thru it along w streaming and what not. Lets be real... a 2.1 system and a Wiim would probably give you a better sound than a sound bar, at least w more options to customize your speakers and sub. [edit] While the tirade against Wiim caught my eye, this was supposed to be about the ONKYO, right? Have to add that the ONKYO is a different beast. Wiim is 2.1... ONKYO is AVR. Not a bad price or deal if you're looking for an AVR. Even if at the same price as a Wiim, its a different beast. Case in point. Can your Wiim do Atmos? Didn't think so.
23:23.......that was awsome Andrew.....I felt like I was suddenly listening to a Monster Truck commercial .....Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! I am a WiiM streaming supporter, the amp though....nah I have other gear for that.
Thanks so much for answering me so clearly @robinsonbrand & getting my name right @Kristi. Yes Andrew, "the hack / workaround" to get Zone to to drive an external amp for my main L&R speakers is exactly what I meant. Yes, I'm regular here & also subscribed. Warm greetings from Trinidad & Tobago BTW So I guess the WiiM Amp *didn't* kick the llama's @$$? 😁 I'm glad that they HDMI board don' get as hot as before and you haven't had any issues with them. Also glad that their newer gear is better & they are under newer & better management.
@@KristiWright Aww thanks & likewise. Oh yeah T & T is quite lovely but the weather these days is quite hot. Thanks for that. It's a pleasure here always Kristi & Andrew.
You guys should compare the wimm amp to POWERNODE edge and watch people's reactions then. I'd be curious how similar products at vastly different price points would be interpreted. One from a 'traditional' brand and one from 'overseas'
Well done, totally agree with your outlook on Onkyo 3100. When I first started as a HT hobbyist some 14 years ago, Onkyo's basic AV receivers used to be so great value for money, always liked the Onkyo sound. A welcome comeback from Onkyo with their 3100. 1 grand for Rz-50 would be a steal.
6:06 So I experienced this myself with a TX-NR717. The HDMI board had a faulty switcher/processor chip used in the HDMI 1.3/1.4 generations. The fault was in this chip itself, where it would eventually fry itself out. It wasn’t a heat issue, it wasn’t an in-use issue, it was an engineering issue on the part of their suppliers. Before they were majority-owned by Gibson, Onkyo was good about replacements and fixes. The Gibson takeover in 2017 ended that extended service period. The Gibson era also somehow made the Onkyo reliability issue worse, even to the point where my local mid/high dealer dropped Integra.
I formerly disregarded soundbars completely. Thanks to the superb and very thorough reviews from Kristi & Andrew I bought my first ever soundbar. I had been considering the RZ-50, but ended up purchasing the Samsung 990 on sale from Best Buy last holiday season and I am very happy with the results.
Good afternoon, audio-peeps! Count me as a fan of the informal/unscripted format. It’s a good counterpoint to the Sunday morning review content. Question on some gear that we own and really enjoy - Elac’s EA101 small form factor integrated amp. I’ve paired it with the wee Kantos (YU4s and Sub6) and it rocks. It even has room correction. Have you folks ever played with one of these?
Currently on sale directly from Elac. (I got ours via eBay a couple of years ago). Works a treat in our “library” (12’x14’), Zep to Coltrane to Brahms to Wu Tang.
The wiim is a waste of money in my opinion and an AVR is a much better option. Great to see a channel mentioning this instead of just pushing a product
I completely agree with you on the Wiim Amp.... They are marketing it clearly beyond just desktop solutions..... T.I. chip amp solutions are just not designed for complex loads near full power.
Fantastic conversation between AR and everyone’s favorite AI chatbot. I’m really glad inexpensive amps are letting more people get into the hobby, but you don’t have to buy bad gear. I purchased the darling chip amp of a couple years ago and it literally hurt my ears. Bought a used class AB amp for less money and had an absolute blast. That lasted me until I was ready to spend a little more on better equipment. I would suggest spending less time defending brands that don’t care about you and more time enjoying music and movies that lift the soul.
Omg. It blows me away how many people crap on you guys for your reviews. You ALWAYS qualify everything with measurements and "in our (Andrew and Kristi's) room, this is how this product does or doesn't preform." And "if it works for you (the audience) then you are happy for people." You were very clear in your Wiim review and the Onkyo review. People need to pay more or closer attention. And elitists? What a bunch of BS. Never. Nope. You two are about, for lack of better term, best bang for your buck. Oversimplifying I know. But I hope you know what I mean. My Onkyo AVR was the best I could afford at the time to do everything I want it to do. And it does it well! I'm happy with it. My only upgrade at this point is for a better center channel speaker as my wife has trouble with dialogue like Kristi does. Any recommendations? Hard I know to have a different brand blend with the rest of my system. Love and appreciate all your hard work, open and honest reviews and feelings. Kristi, love your opinion as well as Andrew's. Don't worry about a slip up or getting tongue tied once in a while. You're doing great! Andrew, awesome as always as well. Keep up the great work and don't let the naysayers get ya down! Cheers and love from Ian in Canada.
It's mind-numbingly bizarre. The number of people who believe we are paid simply because Andrew speaks effectively and takes time to write his thoughts down in script form while also using his skills as a photographer and videographer to produce professional content is concerning. He's been in the hifi/av industry for 20+ years, and yet so many have no idea. It's no wonder there are successful channels that admit to filming with a cheap camera and poor lighting just so the audience is less judgmental and skeptical of the content.
Totally agree, 100%! I used to read his reviews back in the day when he did the print thing. That's how I found this channel a couple of years ago. The videos he produes are so professional, so slick (in the good sense!) with well written content and amazing production values. My hat is off to you both. Thank-you for your well balanced and entertaining reviews and thoughts! Love it! Do you have a favorite center channel speaker?
@@IanMacDonald-u1v Often, I prefer a phantom center. That said, I really liked the B&W here bit.ly/3VKmndc - it matches both the 700 and 800 series very well and the size is manageable.
I bought the WiiM amp. Thought it was very good for the price and for all it offered but it just lacked something. Sold it and got a year old Bluesound Powernode - couldn’t be happier, at least I gave it a chance 😂

Andrew and Kristi together, as always, being the voice of logic and common sense. Nothing more. If there are people that don’t like that, well maybe they should check out some other channels? Or products? Or read some materials? Either way, thank you. Love the episode.

Appreciate you so much! Thank you!

Cheers, D
“I’m a real person!” Yeah, that’s just what a bot would say. Love you guys!
Thank you Andrew for your insightful reviews on most audio gears… they are very informative and straightforward. Awesome work!🤓👍
Much appreciated!
Good afternoon Andrew and Kristi. Very much enjoying these Unplugged discussions. Keep up the great work. Thanks
Back from a hike. Get my notification for your video. Watch it. Made my day better guys. Have a great weekend.
Hope you enjoy!
I love the work you two do. Hang in there!
Appreciate that, and we will. Nothing we haven't had to deal with before. Have a great rest of your day.
15 years of age, love HiFi, got my own Onkyo. TOTALLY LOVE this channel. People my age don't even have speakers. Best case scenario they own a JBL party speaker😅 In my expectations.

@robinsonbrand Well, I can assure you, whatever the process is, it is paying dividends.
So glad you discussed the WiiM amp. Thanks for always being honest with us, sticking to the facts. That's what's important, maintaining your integrity. By the way, I jumped when the explosion happened. 🤣🤣
DaWayne! Always love seeing you.
Love these videos revisiting topics or comments. Please keep them coming! 🙂👍
Great job again, I completely agree with the both of you on this subject!
Another great video guys. Thank you. I get brand loyalty, but I DON’T get the inability for some to accept criticism. Seems like Wiim folks almost take offense when discussing their products. For me, the hobby is about fun in the music…❤️✌️
I agree, it's about fun for me too.
Keep it up!
I know the episode you're referencing. We love that show.

@@KristiWright I will. Thanks
Cheers!
Your reviews are a guide and the final choice is always ours 👌
I have watched your review of Wiim Amp and some other ones that say Wiim Amp is the best thing invented since hot water. I like how you addressed the issues with this device.
I just subscribed to your channel (and ordered a Wiim Amp, since it would fit my needs :) ).
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I sincerely hope the WiiM works for you!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews It seems it does work for me! :)
Desktop setup, paired with Cambridge Audio Minx min22, and an X201 subwoofer.
Love your videos Andrew and Kristi, keep doing what you do!
Thanks so much!

Great comment Randolph, I agree. Had WiiM turned to a third party like EverSolo did for their Amp, boy-oh-boy, would they have had a real hit.
You can get an Onkyo txnr 6050 for about 300 bucks that is just one previous generation has the newer onkyo dac, 7.2 atmos 90 watts per channel, streaming, hdm1 2.1 that works lol etc best deal hands down for someone starting :)
Love you guys!
If people have now shifted the value proposition perspective that Wiim is really JUST a streamer with option to amp … ok cool.
and it could be compared BlueSound Node
BUT hey let’s not pretend the Wiim wasn’t being touted as a kickass value AMP on YT reviews initially OR that it shouldn’t be taken to task for it when the ONKYO **is** a MUCH better value …as an amp 😤😤
You can grab the 3100 Onkyo for less than $250 these days if you shop around. Its a great receiver.
This is one of my favourite HiFi channels because of its transparency, honesty and overall fun factor.

well said guys especially for the wiim amp, it has gotten suspiciously high praises and as you said this is misleading to say the least.
Maybe. From the constant use they will get over the years because people enjoy them so much
Clearly I missed something happening with the Wiim amp but your response was logical and nuanced. Maybe that's the issue, the internet can't do nuance. And video review titles for chi-fi stuff in general seem to be "sensationalized." I think it's great there is enthusiasm but not to such an extreme extent that it becomes toxic.
Sigh...Why the need to use the derogatory term simps?
@@KristiWright I will try to rephrase that. My intention isn't to make anything worse. My apologies.

Love these unplugged videos!!

@@andrewrobinsonreviews I appreciate you both so much!!🥰
Good stuff. I really enjoy this. Onkyo makes good sounding equipment. They don’t get enough credit.
@@eyefly001 how does the wiim sound with the aw650s ? Are you happy with the setup?
Let them have it Andrew!
The special effects at 23:24 😆😆 More please!!! 😆😆
I have been watching you 2 for 5 years at least and enjoyed your videos and to tell you the truth I watch and listen 👂 and then if I like a product that you review and liked I will go and listen in real time to see if I enjoyed it or not . Enjoy your day.
What a novel idea! 😅 Thank you for watching, William!
While I like your reviews, I enjoy these types of discussions even more. Keep up the great work!
as for the onkyo, make sure you learn the unilluminated buttons (at least the tx-626), because on the receiver you won't see anything unless it's daylight. They are unfortunately not alone in this on the "knegar" (working, budget) market.
23:23 scared the sh*t out of me. Hahah!
Love the videos. Keep doing your thing! It’s awesome. Just awesome. Chef’s kiss.
Thanks so much! Appreciate you watching!
Watching this unplugged episode at the beach. Great Friday everyone
JEALOUS! The beach sounds so good right now.
That sounds so nice. The salt, the sand, the sound of palm trees. Have a piña colada for me!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I’ll send you a peak of this view on instagram.
@@KristiWright Will do 🫶🏻
All this is why I absolutely hate it when I see the "giant killer" or " this product will destroy X", because that is usually looking at either a number of features on this supposed giant killer, but not on how properly those features work, and often not looking at build quality and most of all not knowing what I'm personally looking for in a product.
[edit]
While the tirade against Wiim caught my eye, this was supposed to be about the ONKYO, right?
Have to add that the ONKYO is a different beast. Wiim is 2.1... ONKYO is AVR.
Not a bad price or deal if you're looking for an AVR. Even if at the same price as a Wiim, its a different beast. Case in point. Can your Wiim do Atmos?
Didn't think so.
While the Wiim Amp might have issues, the Wiim Mini and Pro are an unbeatable value. A digital streamer with an amazing app for only $100.
WiiM's streamers are solid products --at least in my opinion.
Always fun! Keep em coming
Can't stop, won't stop 😂 Thanks for watching!
Loving these shows ;)
23:23.......that was awsome Andrew.....I felt like I was suddenly listening to a Monster Truck commercial .....Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! I am a WiiM streaming supporter, the amp though....nah I have other gear for that.
😅 Appreciate you watching!
I’m a Onkyo fan boy 2 channel integrated amp from early 70 which I still have. I use as a preamp to a Emotiva BasX2A Power amp. Love its sound.
Warm greetings from Trinidad & Tobago BTW
So I guess the WiiM Amp *didn't* kick the llama's @$$? 😁
I'm glad that they HDMI board don' get as hot as before and you haven't had any issues with them. Also glad that their newer gear is better & they are under newer & better management.
I'm so glad that Andrew was able to help you with your question. T&T?? That sounds lovely.
It's always a pleasure to see your smiling face!
Only AI bots would say they are not AI bots. Where is the @RealKristi Andrew? Lol. You guys are still providing quality work.
haha
I have not played with the EA101. Going to have to google that and look into it. Thanks for the tip!
Thank-you! I will look into that one. Much appreciated. Have a great weekend and look forward, as always, to your next video.
Do you have a second less expensive center channel option as well? I'll share up and stop being a pest now
I bought the WiiM amp. Thought it was very good for the price and for all it offered but it just lacked something. Sold it and got a year old Bluesound Powernode - couldn’t be happier, at least I gave it a chance 😂
Have you heard/owned/whatever the sonos amp 1 and if so... What do you think about that!?
We have the Sonos amp but have not had the opp to test it thoroughly.
