69 Savage cause Anthonys fans will listen to an album if he likes it so basically getting antny's respect (or disrespect in Corey Feldmans case) means more money.
Ryan Greaney EXACTLY! I fucking love Yeezus, Fantano allowed me to realize, the lyrics are really fucking stupid and there's not a lot of meaning in a little over half of the songs. I still enjoy the content of that album.
Ryan Greaney Same. I liked Mastodon's Emperor of Sand, but he was right on a few critiques he made. But he has led me to a couple albums that I enjoyed listening to.
Ben W Well here's another perspective on Yeezus lyrics: its a fucking punk rap album. The lyrics arent supposed to be deep and conscious. It's meant to be in your face, stupid, and fun. It's like complaining Death Grips isn't classical enough. That's not what they're going for.
True. I remember I watched his Hurry Up We're Dreaming review after I had already heard and loved it and he made some great points about the overall cohesion as an album that I didn't really notice. But even after him saying that and the fact that he didn't really like it it's still one of my favourite albums of all time. Every now and then someone comments on these videos effectively saying "fuck you Anthony you're a bad reviewer because I disagree" and then they try and pull this argument out of their ass that reviewers should be objective. It's true that they should be objective as possible but when it comes to something like music you can only comment objectively so far before your tastes come into play, and that's why Fantano is great because he's open and honest about his opinions and lets you know that it's just his opinion. We're not all watching this guy wide eyed waiting for him to tell us what to like, we're just interested in his opinion because he usually makes great points and exposes us to new artists. I found Milo through this melon and I thank him every day for that before I go to sleep, meanwhile some reviews he praises an artist and I'm just like 'meh'. It's almost like if you're mature enough to understand the merits of other people's perspective you can watch reviews without getting upset :thinkingemoji:

I think it’s more so a subconscious thing, like it’s not necessarily you giving a negative review, but you bringing up negative aspects of that artist/album/song, and people become aware of those and can’t stop thinking about it
I've been following you since 2010. I used to be a little bit like this guy, in that I had zero confidence in my own ability to have an opinion. Things are much different now that I'm in my late 20s. These days if I'm enjoying an album that you disliked, I usually shrug and carry on enjoying it. Here's the thing: It's possible to like or even love something while being 100% aware of its flaws. I guess a lot of people really struggle with this concept.
but also, in music what really is a flaw? if the music is giving you an emotion that you like, then it's flawless in its ability at doing that. if it's kind of *almost* giving you an emotion but falling short because of a specific part, then i guess that would be a flaw because it's not able to fully deliver in giving you that emotion. But my main point is someone else considering a part of your favorite music as a flaw does not make that part a flaw, and UNDERSTANDING how someone could see a part as a flaw does not mean you're now aware of it's flaws and learning to accept it
I love this video... Also, you should consider making "intro to" videos. Like "intro to shoegaze" or "intro to black metal." or even to specific artists, e.g. "intro to Death Grips." You could share what you feel are essential records or songs in these genre's/artist's catalogues and I feel like these would also help your constantly expanding fanbase to form more of their own opinions too! Again, love your content man, I think this could create something awesome! :-)
Yeah, it seems to be quite an issue these days, when you tell your opinion, everyone starts to think you're not just stating it and/or trying to get people going thought-wise, but to impose it upon them.
People who aren't Anthony fantano fans also have the Perception that he thinks his opinions are law, I used to think he was like that but he really isn't.
I started following you off the back of a 3 you gave to one of my favourite albums. I still love that album but I'd rather hear different opinions because I already got my own.
The amount of shit I get for watching music reviews is ridiculous. I watch these videos for different perspectives. I do NOT get my opinions from reviews like these.
I disagree heavily with your rating system and about 80% of your reviews but I like watching you because you are articulate and good at explaining your feelings
I am the critic inside your head (and I control you) I am the shitposter in your thread (and I control you) I am the review that you write (and I control you) I am the plebe you try to hide (and I control you) I take you where you want to go I give you all you need to know I drag you down I use you up Mr. Fantano
As a teenager I was once 100% pitchfork fanboy. I matured when I told my band director how I liked an album/game and after watching a review I didn't. He schooled me precisely how you did. Major kudos to this video; it is extremely vital to be able to form your own opinions and defend what it is you do like! Love you!!!
Ahmed Idris i got the points that there was too much singing that was below average, but 2/10? cmon even by his standards i thought i would just be another 6 or 5 lol
Probably one of those where there's something about how it hits his ears that's not enjoyable, because again he's not giving things objective ratings it's just his own enjoyment in the number scale.
Jordan could be, or maybe he just focused on the bad stuff too much, and when you do that you find more and more bad stuff and end up hating something that you would usually find acceptable
Honestly, I find your influence to actually draw me to new music and to appreciate new genres. I would NEVER have listened to Travis Scott's Rodeo had I not been made aware of it's existence thanks to your review, but as a result of your efforts I found it, and quite enjoy it! You've also helped educate me more on what goes into the sounds and tracks I like. So if anything, your reviews have helped me discover new music, not dissauged me from it.
I remember he did a review of lil peeps album and hated it but his descriptions of it seemed like something I'd like so I gave it a listen and I really enjoyed it. Melon being a hater helped me out so thanks lmao
the problem is when you point out flaws that a listener didn't notice but now that he knows about them he notices they're legit and he can't forget about them
Honestly, this video really made me respect my opinion and not dismiss myself as stupid for liking something. Now finally i can proudly say that total xanarchy is my favorite album of all time goddamit
If you're so unconfident in the quality of an album then maybe it just isn't as good as you thought. Not Fantano's fault you can't make informed oppinions
And yet so many people have said they won't be listening to an album because fantano didn't rate it highly. Don't be naive and act like he has no influence on his audience
Fantano is just another dude I sometimes agree with and sometimes disagree with. He gave my favorite album of 2015 a 10/10 and my second favorite a 5/10. He's introduced me to some great artists I might have never found otherwise by giving them positive reviews. He's given mixed or negative reviews to stuff everyone else was hyping up and made me go "thank god someone else thinks this isn't that great". His roasts of hot garbage like Speeding Bullet 2 Heaven and the Corey Feldman album are hilarious. But he's also yet to convince me that the new Father John Misty album is anything more than Hopsin for people who shop at Whole Foods. Him giving St. Vincent's self-titled a 7/10 didn't make me love it any less - it was still my favorite album of that year and I was happy to see it place surprisingly high on his year-end list after clearly growing on him a lot. And my favorite album of last year didn't even get a review from him. I watch Fantano to hear him voice his opinion on something, not to find my own opinion on it. If one reviewer can change your opinion that easily, your opinion probably wasn't that strong in the first place.
TJ Hastie he slayed two albums I love (one from Hella, one from Zach Hill) just because he didn't have the same perspective I had (mostly drumming in those cases) and I'm fine with it; I dunno, I like seeing and listening to people who disagree with me, not only it forces me to articulates my thoughts bettwer, but also makes me more aware of why I like those things
Except he seems to have his own anti-commercial, hipster agenda. Its an outdated view and encourages a cultish attitude towards music. I also found his "comedic" rant at the beginning only about 50% joke & kindle of disturbing. Just my opinion. I could be wrong about the anti-commercial bias, but thats my view from the reviews I have watched.
I think I mean anti-populist rather than anti-commercial. He seems slanted against music that sells a lot, unless its one of his handpicked favourites. Not just music that has a very commercial sound.
Jeff Pettis I think that's ultimately a matter of what he reviews and what he doesn't. The guy can only make so many videos, so he has to decide what's worth the effort of making a video. Most popular music is mediocre or bad, but so is most independent music that goes unnoticed. That's just a rule of art in general. A few really great pieces of art made by people who know what they're doing that stand out in a sea of bad/mediocre pieces of art. This is reflected in Fantano's reviews of popular/mainstream albums. He doesn't care for most of it, but occasionally he'll find something he thinks is really great. The proportion of good vs mediocre and bad albums in indie/underground music isn't that much better from the mainstream. If anything it's worse because it's populated by total amateurs (just think about how many shitty Bandcamp indie rock groups and Soundcloud rappers try to email their stuff to a big name music reviewer like Fantano every day). Fantano definitely weeds through just as much music he doesn't like on that end of the spectrum. The difference is there aren't tons of fans in the comments section asking him to review those artists, so he doesn't. If he thinks the new Drake album and the new album by Random Band X on Bandcamp are both a 5/10, he'll make a video about Drake's album because he knows people want to hear his thoughts. But he won't trash some random artist with 3,000 Facebook likes because none of his viewers would care, so that would be a waste of time on his part. If he's gonna go through the trouble to review an album by an unknown artist, it's gonna be because he thinks it's really good and wants you to check it out. So it may seem like he favors those kinds of artists based on the number of favorable reviews, but look at the larger context. With mainstream music, people want to hear his thoughts on everything. If he thinks some random indie album that only a few people are asking him to review is just okay, what's the point of making a video? If said artist has an interesting sound or a decent-sized following within their genre, they might end up in a YUNOREVIEW, but that's it. And even with more popular underground stuff he does review, he's pretty critical. He just recently gave 5/10's to the new albums by Timber Timbre (a band I and many others discovered through his more positive reviews of their last few albums) and Arca (one of the most acclaimed artists in experimental electronic music at the moment). I don't think his bias against mainstream/accessible music in favor of obscure/experimental music is as bad as you're making it out to be, if it even exists.
This is one of the reasons why I enjoy your reviews so much, because I can understand where you're coming from and how your perspective relates to mine. So if you review something I like negatively, I can understand your criticism but still enjoy it how I enjoy it. Likewise, when I'm watching a review of something I'm unfamiliar with, I'll pull the album up on Amazon Music so that I can sample it as I hear you talking about it, and I'd say at least half the time I don't like what you like, and that's fine because I understand that we have different tastes (your taste in music is much broader than mine, and I envy that a bit, although you listen to a lot more music than I do so that's probably a big factor). And what's great about it is that sometimes I'm introduced to something new that I really like, because I listened to your perspective on it. I think often consumers of reviews either want to hear something get trashed, or they simply want their opinion validated, and like you mentioned, I think the best part about review channels like yours is the chance to put a spotlight on something great to increase its exposure and allow more people to experience it. After all, there's probably a vast sea of garbage that you subject yourself to and most of us would love better music. I can see being on the fence and maybe having some points you make sway my opinion one way or the other, but only because I haven't sufficiently considered those points already, and only because I give sufficient weight to those points based on the merits of the song or album itself. And I certainly wouldn't be emotionally charged regardless of how I reacted to your opinions, because ultimately I made the decision for myself.
To date one of the most important videos on your channel, it's not just you, it's every single major reviewing site. People can really be sheeps sometimes and I find it so annoying when people seem to think that music can be objective, music will always be subjective and that's kind of the beauty of it. Never discourage or make fun of someone for their taste, that's truly tasteless
More than anything, Anthony fantano's videos have opened me up to liking more music than disliking music. I straight up disregarded Rap before, but now I'm eagerly exploring the genre and having a blast! And when Anthony does tear an album that I know to shreds, he usually says a lot of stuff that I felt but couldn't properly express, or things I kept to myself because everyone else seemed to like the album. However, I still really really really like Djent metal as well as Meshuggah, and I still think the Click by AJR is okay.
Josiah The Kid Death Grips is pretty good. He might rate them a bit highly but paramilitary, the money store, and bottomless pit are all 7's to high 8's.
It's hard not to be influenced a bit because sometimes you'll point out things I didn't notice but in the end this is important. But heck I mean I don't even always AGREE with every point you make (I had a lot to disagree with on those last Modest Mouse and mewithoutYou reviews but hey so it goes). Either way I'm sure there's plenty of music I'll never stop liking that you couldn't imagine liking (I can't picture you as a Coheed and Cambria fan but maybe I'm wrong), we both totally agree on others (Swans) and you've even turned me on to some things (Kendrick Lamar, and I was never a hip-hop fan either). So thankyou for your wonderful reviews.
what makes you say that? i mean i enjoyed a couple songs here and there but this was honestly the first hip hop album i enjoyed all the way through haha
mrsaturn12 You never liked Lupe Fiasco, Kanye, Nas, Eminem, The Roots, Mike Shinoda (of Linkin Park and Fort Minor), Jay Z, Aesop Rock, OutKast, or Beastie Boys?

You could share what you feel are essential records or songs in these genre's/artist's catalogues and I feel like these would also help your constantly expanding fanbase to form more of their own opinions too! Again, love your content man, I think this could create something awesome! :-)
Nick Urban I love this idea. I've been trying to expand my musical palet and this idea would be wonderful.
Nick Urban I AGREEEEEEEEEEEE
Nick Urban I hope the intro to death grips starts with the sound of breaking glass
The TH-camr Deep Cuts does some stuff like that already, it's really good and you should check him out
I agree with Ludwig, you should check out the youtuber Deep Cuts for that kind of stuff
Y'all know this is just his opinion, right?
betheidea wut? no
Yeah, it seems to be quite an issue these days, when you tell your opinion, everyone starts to think you're not just stating it and/or trying to get people going thought-wise, but to impose it upon them.
betheidea THIS IS THE LAW
i cant believe he needed to say this
People who aren't Anthony fantano fans also have the Perception that he thinks his opinions are law, I used to think he was like that but he really isn't.
@@grinkobaba9226 opinions are never law that's so dumb
I mean he made a video on why he doesn't use the n word
There's a lot of betas in this world looking to be led. And most of his fanbase seems to be said betas.

I disagree heavily with your rating system and about 80% of your reviews but I like watching you because you are articulate and good at explaining your feelings

As a teenager I was once 100% pitchfork fanboy. I matured when I told my band director how I liked an album/game and after watching a review I didn't. He schooled me precisely how you did. Major kudos to this video; it is extremely vital to be able to form your own opinions and defend what it is you do like! Love you!!!
i remember that time you gave Goldlink 2/10, i fucking loved that album, still do. still hold a grudge melon man...

Fantano asserts his dominance
the problem is when you point out flaws that a listener didn't notice but now that he knows about them he notices they're legit and he can't forget about them
Honestly, this video really made me respect my opinion and not dismiss myself as stupid for liking something. Now finally i can proudly say that total xanarchy is my favorite album of all time goddamit

That's the point. When he makes valid points, it makes you suddenly look at the albums in a different way.
Nice Lancaster Dodd in the profile pic there.
Ruairi Flynn yeah but the actual problem is people feeling conflicted because of someone else's opinion - that's Fantano's main idea here
Matthew Slevin thanks :-)
If you're so unconfident in the quality of an album then maybe it just isn't as good as you thought. Not Fantano's fault you can't make informed oppinions
Sheldon Dinkleberg lol no. it means you're a weak minded individual who takes what this melon says as fact.
Joseph93 so basically you want him to like every album that you like hmmmm you might be a little insecure.
Joseph93 No, that really isn't what I'm saying. Reviews should be there solely to suppliment your oppinion on something, not form it. Simple as that.
And yet so many people have said they won't be listening to an album because fantano didn't rate it highly. Don't be naive and act like he has no influence on his audience
You can sometimes convince me to like an album that I don’t like, but you can never get me to dislike an album I already like
Wait... so My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy could be a good album?
Nikodem Anthony its an excellent fucking album
Nikodem Anthony Just like J Cole could be a good rapper

Nikodem Anthony u got rekt bro
WBS Woah buddy
^ this guy knows what's up
TJ Hastie he slayed two albums I love (one from Hella, one from Zach Hill) just because he didn't have the same perspective I had (mostly drumming in those cases) and I'm fine with it; I dunno, I like seeing and listening to people who disagree with me, not only it forces me to articulates my thoughts bettwer, but also makes me more aware of why I like those things
You turned me on to atrocity exhibition
Thanks

I feel like everytime I see one of these videos his hairline goes back a couple of miles

The Shittington Post ...

You gave Thundercat's Apocalypse album a 3/10. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the album myself.

When did listening to music become so complicated?
The internet complicated every aspect of life believe it or not
Musical criticism and all of its bullshit aspects are centuries older than the Internet.
It’s not that complicated. Just think.
He probably the reason people like death grips so much
Josiah The Kid Death Grips is pretty good. He might rate them a bit highly but paramilitary, the money store, and bottomless pit are all 7's to high 8's.
Some of their shit slaps I'll admit they're just too hard for me to get in to
Yeah I totally get that. They do make some of the weirdest and least approachable music. I like it but I TOTALLY get why most people don't.
Spread Eagle Cross The Block goes hard as fuck tho. That Link Wray sample is godlike 😩💦👌
