I must have searched for this for 20 years. Asking people if they remember a short cartoon about a weird looking guy who loved making shadow puppets. I would even attempt to draw the wide head with row of teeth on the bottom. "See? Like this. You don't remember this at all?" and here it pops up in a TH-cam search with hardly any effort. Thanks for ending the saga for me by posting it online.
+Craig Pierson HA! That's great! I don't know how you would have luck searching for "weird little guy who loves making shadow puppets"? I should try that and see what pops up!
Chuck Gamble thank you for making this and thank you for posting it here. I remember seeing this at a rave in Auckland around 1994, maybe 1995, and also I have searched for a long time every now and then, tonight I managed to get the key words. Like the others here this film had a huge impact on my being. I was 18 then, on my way to art school, stayed for years, never graduated, ended up dropping out because I didn't want to sell crap people didn't want, and ended up becoming a Plasterer 13 years ago, I have two small children now and life is incredibly different. Your film i's still as good as I thought it was, which speaks volumes, as nostalgia often deceives us. I'm definitely showing this to my kids when they are old enough to get it and not be too freaked out. I'm so excited to have found this again. I hope all is well and good with you.
I also looked for it for years. I even tried to contact you some years ago to receive it via email or any other way, even looked for it on Siggraph's DVDs to buy it if necessary. One of the best short animated movies EVER.
I've always remembered this film since I saw it as a kid on IFC. I remembered so vividly when his fingers get chopped off and when he switched to his toes, it's just incredible. He has so much hope and he finds a way to be happy in such a dreary existence. Love love this film.
I first saw this when I was incredibly young, I would guess around 5 or 6. It was so dark, oddly beautiful, and admittedly creepy; especially to a young girl. Needless to say it was unlike anything else I had ever seen. Being as old as I was only a few parts stuck with me, namely the ending when he sees that he has lost his fingers and the moves to use his toes. I never forgot that scene. I'm 21 now and just watched this for the first time since then, and it's just as fascinating as it was then.
I hope nobody minds if I spam the comments, just a little. I just think it's one of the best spent ten minutes on TH-cam. And I am watching it every time I comment, and I'm only rating it the one time.
This was one of a number of shorts my father and I watched together when I was a teenager. Since then, it has been one of the cornerstones of my ambitions as an artist - to create vibrant, dark, disturbing, thrilling works that engage the heart and the mind. I'm so glad to have found this on youtube after all these years, and I'm even more glad to be able to share it with people I love. Upon watching it now, close friends tell me, "This explains so much about you." Thank you for this film. It helped shape me as a person. I am forever grateful.
+Ilan Ben-Yehuda Wow - thank you for the kind words. I LOVE that this has given you some inspiration!!! My intent was to provide hope and inspiration with this little movie! Regards, Chuck
A friend of my parents once showed me this animation many years ago (when I was like 7, or 8 ys old), and it struck me so much that I have never forgotten... It actually made me cry, and it was very far from common for me. So thank you Chuck Gamble, for your work and for posting it on TH-cam. I would have never thought that I'd finally get the chance to see it again... Elisa from Italy
thank you. chuck...really beautiful, wonderful and sad film..i gonna burst out may tears....i gonna sleepless tonight.................really really heart wrenching.....
this is my favorite short film of all time. it was the first time i saw it, ten years ago. it will be when i'm an old man in the park, feeding pigeons and smiling. I'm going to keep making them with my feet.
I saw this short in the late 90's on cable access in Austin, TX and it moved me like nothing I've ever seen before. I loved it and spent years looking for it again. Thanks to a Redditor (herenorthere) I can experience it all over again and share it with my friends. Thanks for creating this amazing film. It's brilliant!
I saw this short film on TV when I was a kid in the '90s. It traumatized me terribly (I don't think I need to say which scene did that), but I have vividly remembered the plot and the visuals ever since. For years I have wanted to know more about this cartoon (who made it? What was it called? How many other people had this short film seared into their minds as children? Did the author create more short films in the same style?) but I didn't know where to even begin to look and I doubted that I'd ever find the answers. Now, after twenty years, I finally have closure. I can watch this film again with an adult perspective. Thank you, Chuck Gamble, for sharing your work online.
i just saw this clip on my Image Theory class... i think it is amazing. It's an example of waht we all should do " get over difficulties and opression and get free". Thank you so much for making it public!!
I watched this many years ago on Bravo (back when they were actually showing content that was worthwhile) I memorized the tittle and your name and had been searching for it ever since. I'm really glad you uploaded this to TH-cam and I have had a chance to watch it again and share it with others. It's even better than I remembered it.
Chuck, went to RIT 92-95 and cant remember how i first seen this. Been thinking about the concept of "1984" and remembered this, and soo so happy you have in online. Great Film. Both makes me Sad and Happy, what a great range of emotions. Blows me away. Congrats on all your Accomplishments with it. Please always leave it online for us to share. Blessings.
Add me to the list of people that sob when they see it. It made a huge impression on me when I first saw it so many years ago and it still does. Thank you for posting this
!! I have been looking for this film since the first time I saw it in my freshman class at RIT! I asked for it then and have been searching for it on the net for years. I am so glad you posted. thank you and I'm glad I can share this with my friends. Good luck on your future endeavors. :)
I wish I knew when I saw this, but I was around 12 or 13. It really stayed with me even to this day and made a big impact on my mind. Really incredible work. Thanks for it.
That was absolutely top shelf! Animated to life with elan and sophistication. I'm just blown away...this is 5 + stars. What a great story of indomitable spirit! Thanks to my15minutes for tuning me on to chukchukchuk! I just subbed to both!
Chuck, I saw this video like a decade ago late at night in my mom's house. It was very powerful then, and now. A truly magnificent piece of work, and reflective of the times in which we live.
I too have been looking for this animated short for years!! All I could remember was the workers had to lock their hands up. Thank you so much for posting this treasure!
Shadow Puppets animation by Chuck Gamble of Lucky Radish Studio. I am so proud to have had this shown at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival! Thank you all so much for the kind words. A few folks have been asking for copies of this so I now have a limited number of DVDs for sale. Shoot me an email if interested.
FINALLY!! I have also been looking for this for years. I don't remember if I saw it on Bravo or at a Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation in the 90s. But I have thought of this animation many, many times and really didn't know if I'd ever be able to see it again. I am now a senior Animation student, double-majoring in Painting. I told my instructor about this short a few days ago, and went on the hunt again. I can't wait to share it. Thank you for this inspiring gem!!!
This is a beautiful picture. I saw it probably 10 years ago on a television compilation and loved it. For the past couple of years, though, I've been trying to remember the title, and tonight I succeeded!!
I was maybe13, late at night I couldn't sleep. I think it was IMC, or Bravo? Ya know, back when Bravo had artsy stuff and less reality shows? Well it just hit me pretty hard, just stuck in my head. After all these years, it hasn't lost any of it's power.
I saw this when I was probably like 7, and all I could remember was it was in black and white and this weird short guy got his fingers chopped off. I've been trying to find it for YEARS. Thank you for uploading it, the mystery is solved!
@usuario1971 I saw it at the same tv program, and I've been looking for it for ages, thank God a kind soul found it and send the link for me...and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. My God this film it's been on my mind for all this time it's absolutly wonderful, thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing it.
Oh man, saw this over at RIT around '09 or '10 for this art major orientation if I recall correctly. Good animation! Loving the use of negative space with that much blackness to complement the light areas as a whole. The sound was well-done, very minimalistic and yet delivers all the meaning.
When I saw this as a child it was terrifying and powerful, today as an adult it is inspiring and powerful. The character goes from 1-7 in the stages of grief instantly though.
i'm so excited this is on you tube. I havent seen it since you showed it in animation class, and now i can show it off to others! youre pretty fantastic, chuck. (xxoo - liz)
beautiful & strange & perfect..saw this years ago & was so profoundly touched i remember bursting into tears. i’ve been looking for it for ages. watching it now again I’m struck w how simple it is relatable , universal dystopian, yet I think just familiar enough that It functions symbolically on so many levels.. how easily do we give up? how hard will we look to find joy? it all made me think of plato’s allegory of the cave (yo name drop) ....past the shadow (puppets) seeing,.....what a next level state of optimism this character possesses . So in conclusion those tears gave way to tears of joy i’m going to look for more art by you!! Than you.
So funny that most of the comments are of people saying they've been searching for this film for years. I have too! All I could remember was that it was animated, b/w, and that the guy had his hands locked in a box for some reason. I was so shocked watching it again to see that they cut his fingers off!
I just found this after fifteen minutes of search for this short film, which I remember from years ago as a very moving short film shown on spanish television, lauded as a chant to the power of freedom and hope... Wow...do you know I think I may have seen this before? Please tell me where I might have seen this? I am totally dumbfounded... Ok. I'm collected. Hello Elisa, I am so happy to get your note. Always rewarding to hear from folks who were effected by my work. I hope it was for the good. Peace, Chuck

wow what a fantastic video. It's one of my current faves (no wait all time faves) and I've watched around around 9900 vids on here. Are you planning to upload more animation vids? I'm actually thinking about quitting my art history university and studying 3danimation at another one.

TH-cam can be a great tool.

Thanks Tiffany!
So nice to hear that!!! Glad it has had lasting effect. I made it a while ago but the sentiment still applies.

Thanks so much for posting this here. I saw this on TV years ago but never caught the name. I've also been eager to share it with people.
I wish I knew when I saw this, but I was around 12 or 13. It really stayed with me even to this day and made a big impact on my mind. Really incredible work. Thanks for it.
I seen this when I was little and it taught me how even in the hands of evil people still have hope in who you are I was like 9 years old
That's a great lesson I hadn't really considered!
That was absolutely top shelf! Animated to life with elan and sophistication. I'm just blown away...this is 5 + stars. What a great story of indomitable spirit! Thanks to my15minutes for tuning me on to chukchukchuk! I just subbed to both!

It was. I remember it really messed me up, but now that I'm older I wanted to find it to see if I could handle it. Good news, I can! haha.

I just found this after fifteen minutes of search for this short film, which I remember from years ago as a very moving short film shown on spanish television, lauded as a chant to the power of freedom and hope... Thanks for making it!
By the way, my definitive successful search was.... 'make shadows with feet' :-D
very good. +fav
Whoa!! Well done! Kudos on this one. I hope it has been shown in many an animation festival.
Unbelievebale Master! Thanks for your work!
Masterpiece and still relevant. Sadly. Just as an example: What are the slaves working on ? Preparation of Quatar's 2022 World Cup?
astonishing
Chuck, this has a profound influence on me when I attend RIT in 1996. I was given a copy by a professor and I just noticed you trimmed up the original (or perhaps I was given an extended rougher version). Anyway, I can finally tell you how it inspired me. It's a great animated short!
Hey Mike - Great to hear!!! Yes, I trimmed it back a bit. Always wanted to tighten it up a bit.
Holy fuckall; this movie is so fucking favorited. V_v that hits too close to home, or maybe just close enough. Thanks.
Anyone else feel the same fear the little alien dude felt when the scary ass warden walked in??
I LOVE this video...
Thanks for Sharing it...
Wow...do you know I think I may have seen this before? Please tell me where I might have seen this? I am totally dumbfounded...
Ok. I'm collected. This is a classic work on the box society clasps on people and the will to spring out of that box...this work is under-appreciated and that is an understatement.
brilliant.
so very sad....
thank you so much for sharing it!
Hello Elisa,
I am so happy to get your note. Always rewarding to hear from folks who were effected by my work. I hope it was for the good.
Peace,
Chuck
Me and you both brother!
chuk chuk chuk

Now that's true talent... Reminds me of that Benigni-movie, "La vita è bella".
I think that i had watched it on HBO or Cinemax - they had a short film festival
This is fucking brilliant!!! Fav, 5 stars, and forever in my heart.
I love this and would like to share it with my friends! 5 srtistic stars!
1984.
V Vendetta.
Fahrenheit 451.

The moral of the story is that he should have used his damn toes from the start.
Sushadow puppets-us!!!
Ha! Yes, I did make the Mixamajig app! Good catch! Sorry to be slow in reply. I'm so busy I don't check here much... guess that had better change! Thank you for the kind words - it is so good to know the film still has meaning for people!
Peace,
Chuck
Dystopia should be creepy. Haven't you seen 'Brazil'? Thanks, brother! :)
LOL...Well I just subbed to you, trying to get in on the ground floor!
Love it!
Awesome. I saw this first at SIGGRAPH.
However, why is the bit with the pointy-hat guy doing a Hannah Barbara laugh missing?
wow what a fantastic video. It's one of my current faves (no wait all time faves) and I've watched around around 9900 vids on here. Are you planning to upload more animation vids? I'm actually thinking about quitting my art history university and studying 3danimation at another one.

Who wrote the music ? Can it be found somewhere ?
+raphaël beuchot Glad to hear this had an impact! I actually wrote the music with a pal helping out. Not available anywhere except on the DVD.
1984
This is such a great film! So emotional with a strong message! Need this kind of message in these times. Thank you for creating this.
On a side note... are you the same person who makes the Mixamajig app?
Tracy
I'm so behind on comments! But, yes, I am... although Mixamajig is long gone... Thank you for the kind comment

Inspired between Metropolis, 1984 and… Spain today?
