On mixing paint I try and approach it in a much less scientific kind of way and just mixing by feel rather than to be exact matches, because it will likely be close enough. Big fan of using deck tan with pro acryl Payne's grey (Vince vinturella's signature series) for nmm silvers

Not saying Citadel is a bad paint range, but why does it always seem that people who say it's the best paints are folks who started with it? For me Vallejo is the measuring stick and pound for pound best range of paints.

Availability for me. Also, I think I tend to like them because there is lots of guides that say “use this colour, then that colour”. Guides tend to be all citadel, or 7 different brands - there isn’t many ppl out there doing their whole guide with Vallejo. Also, it’s the first, change is hard. Investment is usually already made.

Here are all the acrylic paints I've tried and can actually remember: All kinds of Citadel paints, vallejo game,model,32ml metallics, Pro Acryl including transparents, Chimera Kolors, Liquitex Acrylic gouache, AK third gen, Two Thin Coats, Scale 75 artist range/Fantasy and games range, Greenstuff World pure metal pigments, some indivual paints and their dipping inks and lastly, and certainly least: Army Painter before they got their shit together.
Best out of that whole lot, at least for the way I paint, are Vallejo 32mm metallics alongside GSW pure metal pigments, All Pro Acryl stuff ''Especially Rogue Hobbies signatures'', Chimera Kolors and AK Third Gen.
I try to keep my collection at least somewhat manageable, so I threw out the worst of the lot. And the ones I threw out are as follows: Army Painter, Citadel and vallejo game colours. Everything else is something I use regularly and have no problems with.
Just as a sidenote, I do also use oil paints for actual painting, not just washes. Winsor and Newton, only good brand that's still affordable, considering how little of it miniature painters use.

I'm colorblind and had a lot of success with Reaper triads about a decade ago. The paint isn't great but it taught me a lot about how colors work together. Now I mostly use ProAcryl and Citadel with a smattering of my favourite Vallejo sprinkled it (especially their air metallics). My other crutch is using an app called paintrack that has color tools to make sure I'm not using an incorrect color and to save recipes.

The Pro-Acryl ones are insanely good for that single pigment, brilliant colour, used them a lot especially the titanium white. Used their metallics recently too and found them very good. At this point most of the new iterations of paint ranges are generally reliable. They have fewer bad paints than they used to. Some still have several paints in their range that struggles, particularly citadel base and layer which are lagging behind competition. But for the most part, aside from some specific outliers in a paint range, they're good. Then the totally new paint ranges like Pro Acryl and Two Thin Coat are knocking it out of the park. However, I wish TTC had more volume of paint per pot, they run out quickly. But that's more of a testament to how useful it is.
If I were to be stuck with just 1 paint range it would be AK 3rd gen. It is consistent. The paint pots are an industry standard size, making them easy to store. And the color variety is immense.
Rakarth is probably the single paint I've gone through the most pots of. It's got to be 2-3 pots a year for a decade now. It is more to do with my paint style and subjects I select but I find so many ways to use it. Pro Acryl Red Gray is a new paint that I've found ticks the same boxes. It's a little darker but man, it's great too.

New to the hobby (although I will be a historical vice fantasy/sci-f war gamer). I have been looking all over for paint comparisons but of course 95% of such content is fantasy focused. However, reviews of paint regardless of miniature is very helpful. I ran across your video and found something you said interesting. Folks from the UK and into Warhammer would naturally gravitate towards Citadel. The bit you mentioned about Warlord was a light bulb moment. In that historical space they chose Army Painter. So my question is if you were in my shoes as a newcomer who will focus mostly on 18-19 th century historical miniature painting, who would you go with. I am from the U.S. so no bias or history with any company at all. It seems on the surface that Vallejo model color is well suited to historical but then again I like the base/layer/highlight ease with Citadel.. again as a beginner. I very much welcome suggestions. Thanks!!

Citadel for me. I've tried moving away from Citadel but converting colours is a faff, if not expensive if you buy before knowing for certain an alternative paint colour is a ballpark match. Seen many use other brands, like Pro Acryl, Warcolors, Army Painter etc., but again, expense to try out when I'm looking at painting a specific figure/squad. Unless I'm airbrushing anything other than black/white/grey/bone "primer", which is rare, I know where I am with Citadel.

AK Interactive: very very good for 20 century/contemporary, great effect and additives, not as broad a range outside that
Pro Acryl - limited range but high quality - on my list to buy
AP - Haven't bought any of the new range, primarily use their acrylic strong tone wash, very broad range especially for misx of Fantasy/scifi & historical
Vallejo: I'm biased been using them for over 20 years, mostly for historicals. Very broad range , especially good for all forms of historical subjects. Awesome metallics and excellent for airbrushing. Primers are so easy to work with, Also were very much bang for buck compared to Citadel.

I'm interested in trying the Vallejo Metal, but I don't understand which one they're talking about. For instance they mentioned GunMetal and I can find 5 different types... Game Air Gunmetal / Mecha Color Gunmetal (pretty sure it's not this one) / Game color gunmetal / model color gunmetal / air metal color gunmetal grey. I think they're talking about the air one, but which one ? The Game air or the air metal color ?

We're mainly talking about the larger pots of metal colour I believe. That's what I have a love - Pat

@@thepaintingphase Oh an answer by the man itself ! Thanks a lot for the reply ! I see, it's indeed the "Metal Color" range then. It seems my local shop calls it "Air Metal Color", as if there wasn't enough confusion in the Vallejo range already... And thanks a lot for accompanying me while painting too !

I enjoy the Green Stuff World paints. I know they have a controversy but so does AK. GW is a walking controversy, and Vallejo stole the colors from GW. 😂 Anyways, GSW puts out a ton of tutorials every day on their Facebook. Even if you don't like the brand, they are doing something positive in that aspect. I like their paints but I also like a bunch of other brands too like the new game color paints, Atom from Mig, ProAcryl etc. The worst ones would I would say are cuttlefish colors, scale 75 scale color, and original Army painter.

The Mecha paints are semi-gloss and is actully valljeo try at gundam paints, they are okey as hobby paints, not so good for gundams as they should be painted with solvent based paints as that dont scrape and chip as easy as acrylics

Citadel, I only used for maybe a month, so TBH I can't really remember what it's like to actually paint with. I can just remember INFURIATING FUCKING POTS!!!!!
    They're also the most expensive.
About 99% of my paint use is S75 ScaleColour and S75 Fantasy & Games

Geoff is correct on the Skaventide box Vs the Starter Sets. The Skaventide set is a "launch box" for people to get everything in one place; already in the hobby.

ProAcryl gloopy? Are we talking about the same paints? They’re pre thinned because Jason doesn’t use a wet pallet. One of their main selling points is how liquid their paints are? I’m wondering if the change in viscosity has something to do with getting shipped overseas and then freezing on you or something else?

    • @thepaintingphase

I could be wrong, but i think the Mecha range are all brush on primers, because they're made to paint straight onto Gunpla without priming. I think! If that's how they work that's a pretty nifty gimmick.

I refuse to buy anymore citadel paint until they fix the crappy pots. Especially when 2 thin coats is like a 98% color match.
For the record I have 0 issue with pots on the whole but the pots citadel uses are just garbage quality.
Refuse to try AP fanatic given how trash their original paints were

Oof, saying citadel is the best straight away is a rough take. The absurd price of those pots, in combination with a terrible pot design that dries out standard paints and spills washes is just not worth it. Plus trying to airbrush those things is a PITA. Vallejo and PA are just better options and speed paints are cheaper than contrast and just as good
