- How to adjust the Mercury Multi Function Tiller Handle on the redesigned Mercury 15 or 20 HP outboard that is on my 13 foot utility Jon boat. I provide a tip on how to easily adjust the tiller handle. I also provide a brief Engine overview.

Great motor. I bought the 20hp a year ago and so far no problems. Only minor complaint is it makes rattle noise around half throttle. But no functional issues. I actually use it to pull my kids on tubes in a 14 foot aluminum fishing boat...with plenty of power to get them up to 24mph.
I’ll check for a noise at half throttle but don’t recall one! They are solid engines!

I got my 20 hp four stroke absolutely love it electric start is awesome easy to use very quiet fast on a 14 1/2 ft Grumman aluminum low fuel consumption even use it in Boston harbor and the islands for striper fishing awesome keeps my optima battery s fully charged and I have a lot of electrical use in my rig no complaints
@Steven Camara- sounds like you have a sweet setup and congrats on the new engine! Did you buy the extended warranty? It is cheap to add so you might want to consider buying it. What else do you target besides striper?
Briiliant info. I sit on the left side of my inflatable boat and the tiller arm sometimes can lightly dig into the right side of my waist. I shall move the tiller arm over to the right side abit and see how we go. Cheers.

Great job on the demo. I for one however hate the shift know. You need " three arms" to do the ssme the maneuvers as the control in the twist throttle/shift. Not a fan of the shift lever ar all. Just my personal take.
I agree that I would prefer to mount the engine with an steering wheel but not enough room on the little boat! the new mercury handle is night and day better than my previous Yamaha 9.9 handle.

I recently bought a used but almost new one - 15hp pull start. I find it's difficult to start if you leave the throttle in the start position so I've learned to open the throttle wide open for one or two pulls and then reset back to the start position and then it starts fine. A lot of power there - in fact I haven'nt had it wide open yet and very very fuel efficient. Anyone else with that start issue??
@jamesthomas7928 I sometimes will give it some gas when starting a cold engine. have fun with your boat. what part of the country are you in?

What do you do with the Allen key, do you have to unscrew anything or just press up on it?
@brucemerkley8767 you will pull the allen key the direction you want the handle
How did you fined the gear selector on the tiller ?
I just adjusted the handle (yoke). No adjustments to the gear.
How long is the tiller handle, from the end of the cowl to the end of the handle.

Can I get a tiller handle like this for an older model of Mercury 20HP motor?
probably not likely but I wish they could because the new tiller handle is like butter!
Does your motor tilt lock when you put it in reverse? And unlock when in forward gear? I know the red lever on the left you can manually lock / unlock it. But on my 25hp it wont auto lock in reverse or unlock in forward which is dangerous if the operator forgets to unlock it and hits something in the water.
@joej.4170 you can lock my engine in reverse. what engine do you have?
I have a 2023 mercury 25hp. Its manual tilt and start. So it won't automatically lock when shifted in reverse, mine has to be done manually. All other engines i have had auto lock in reverse.

@Arda Uçar engine is on the second pin from the bottom. I have adjusted it a few times but feel it is trimmed in a good spot. on the trim position, the engine is all the way down.
How much does that engine cost?
@eddygoodwin7089 pre covid with the extra 5 year warranty it was around $2,600. I called a bunch of dealers within 2 hours of my location. most were out of stock.

That could be an option but the seats are bolted down!
