Takeda is spot on when he says that Kageyama is lucky to have met this particular group of very special seniors who have consistently supported and lifted him up. He might have been forced out of playing setter or shafted to a support role had he gone to Shiratorizawa like he originally wanted. I like the message conveyed here - that sport is also about the teams you meet along the way and the people you learn from.
The first scene with Nishinoya is really interesting to me, because it's a subtle reminder that Kageyama is not the only volleyball genius on the team. It would have been perfectly in character for Noya to escalate until Daichi broke up the argument, but instead, once Kageyama clarified what he meant, Noya mentally played back his position relative to the others and instantly realised that Kageyama was correct. Not only is that some incredible game-sense and spacial awareness, but his response makes it clear that he does not intend to repeat his mistake. No excuses, no defending himself, just acknowledgement of his error and returning to the game.
Kageyama is also fresh from U19 national camp where he played different positions other than setter. Kageyama had a moment of admiration for the Libero rolling out of his attack path when he was playing left wing. Kageyama noted how awesome it was that not only did the libero make a great play on the ball but he also had the presence of mind to roll out of the way after. Nishinoya made a great play and was admiring his own work instead of thinking of how he could continue to aid his teammates.
late to the party. the thing with Nishinoya that rings true to his nature is he have the same "hunger" as Hinata. He always strive to improve. thats why he was working hard with overhands. always sorry when the receive was off etc.
@@taichiixsan4619the interesting thing about Nishinoya is that despite having the same hunger to always improve he’s not someone who only ever thinks about volleyball like Hinata and Kageyama. Which you can see by the his motivation to go to Karasuno and the way he was unwilling to rejoin the club without his boy Asahi.
Hinata "crowning" Kageyama as the King of the Court is one of those magical moments in anime that brings a character arc full circle, it's the validation Kageyama needed the most but never realized it. It's too bad they missed the chance to show Hinata wearing the Queen's crown like I think they did back in season 2. The King may be the most important piece on the chess board but it's the Queen that commands the most attention!
The look on Kageyama's face at 12:36 gets me everytime. He realized he communicated in a wrong way. You can see the fear in his face, fear that history would repeat itself and his team would abandon him 😢 But thank goodness he found a team that can understand him!
I would like to point out that even when Kageyama is having his mini breakdown, it's still different than middle school. In middle school, it is more commanding. "Move faster. Jump higher. Match me to win." Here is closer to pleading. He knows he is a good setter and giving them the tosses they want, so he says, "Please just score"
yep! Atsumu's point was that Kags adjusted too far to the point where he was covering for his own hitter's short comings and laziness. Atsumu tries to push his hitters to be the best they can be, even if it means leaving them in the dust occasionally. The setter battle between them is going to be legendary.
@@SarahPavanVolleyball How did you turn atsumu pointing out a real flaw in kageyama that lead him to actually becoming a better player to "I hope he makes atsumu regret his comment" ? I'm not even going to comment on the "he will be so much better than him (atsumu)" part and just watch you in the later half of the season 4. I already felt like you were going to hate on him anyway, his kind of personality doesn't sit well with everyone.
@@amai-w8f agreed atsumu is the first setter we met in the series who not only exceeds kageyama in terms of understanding players and game but also in shear talent and agility and i love that and yes kageyama is not on the level of atsumu . atsumu = oikawa(game sense) + kageyama (natural talent)
It's really important to how HUGE Kageyama's trauma was (you can call it PTSD, as we saw him make nightmares about it). It has always restrained his improvement, while his technical skills are already otherworldly. Once he overcomes it, he's unstoppable (you never really recover from a big trauma, but you can overcome the difficulties).
I love how much growth happens in this episode! Also, now that everything is out in the open, I can finally say this - Atsumu wasn't trying to get under Kageyama's skin or throw him off with his goody two shoes comment. He was making a very valid observation, and one that he saw was actually hampering Kageyama's potential to bring his team to even higher levels. Kageyama had been adjusting to accommodate all of Karasuno's hitters - in both a good and bad way. Now he's going to learn to find a happy medium between his old junior high way of doing things (only expecting his hitters to match whatever he wanted to do) and the way Oikawa taught him (adjusting your sets to what each hitter tends to do the best at). Truth be told, Oikawa probably didn't intend for him to swing so hard in the opposite direction that he stopped making his hitters adjust at all, since Oikawa himself does make his hitters push themselves sometimes, but Kageyama being Kageyama, he probably took it too literally.
@Amaimon it's the show that painting him to be like that, sort of. Up to this point all we have to go to figure out who he is are his "goody two shoes" and "do you really want to be a setter" comments, that could be interpreted as mind games. He doesn't get more fleshed out until later. Agreed that he would probably enjoy the competition.
@@amai-w8f I think what Sarah is saying is not in its literal sense but instead like a compliment that Kageyama is going to be much more of a threat now. You know how people would use this phrasing just to point out something. I think Sarah mean it in a more competitive way.
@@Kiara-zq3mf Knowing how she reacts to haikyuu and only seems to like characters that are either on the main roster or are a ray of sunshine i don't get the same interpretation of her character as you bro, sorry LOL
I love how this entire episode ties with the conversation between Kindaichi, Kunimi and Hinata a few episodes ago. Having Kindaichi still feel troubled about junior high and Kunimi telling him he did his best and need not to dwell on it, just to have Hinata say "ayo fighting is normal" feels like a prelude to everything in this episode
One thing I'd add about Datekô next year is that as opposed to Karasuno, their 3rd years have already left the team. So when the next inter-high comes around, their team will have already played as a unit for a year (whereas other teams will need to adapt to 3rd years leaving, integrating new 1st years, etc.. in just a few months.) I think this will be a huge advantage for them
I love Karasuno but Date has never gone to nationals and is still an unknown team to the rest of Japan. Hopefully they will get the chance in their next season especially with Shiratorizawa missing Ushijima.
I love this episode! I wanted to point out a few things that connected to Kageyama from prior episodes. I wonder if you remember in episode 5 when Kageyama said during the training camp 'Everyone here is so good I feel like I'm rising to their level'. I think that he was being pushed to his limit there and seemed to be enjoying it so much because of that. I think that's one of the reasons he wanted to push the Karasuno members to the limit, only he didn't know how to communicate properly with the team besides Hinata. And Hinata and the rest of the team helped with that. Speaking of the Kageyama-Hinata relationship: Hinata is the only one on the team that has experienced his King of the court nature, since he was proper to rest of his teammates and wouldn't critique anyone except Hinata. Hinata knows how beneficial it has been for his game to have things pointed out to him by Kageyama even if as Hinata says 'he has an issue with tone'. So he knows his being King of the court can be of great benefit to the entire team as it was for him and is definitely holding Karasuno back from being the best it can be. It also reminds me of S1, when Kageyama told Hinata that there's nothing wrong with being a decoy. Now Hinata is telling Kageyama that there is nothing wrong with him being the King of the court and finally setting him free of his traumatic past. Also, I waited for this episode to be able to comment this: Did you know that the opening for the first half of the season is called 'Pheonix'? I think it's because both Hinata and Kageyama have been reborn in a sense. Hinata with his new perspective on volleyball and Kageyama reborn as the new King of the Court.
You always have the most insightful comments ❤️ thank you for that! Also, I love that tidbit at the end about the "Phoenix" opening. That is soooo cool! I think you're right!
This is so important because now Kageyama is not running away from being "the king" now, he is now acknowledging that yes deep down he is a king, he is finally able to accept that. Instead of running away and denying, he has finally transitioned into accepting it.
This whole episode along with your reaction makes me remember Muserskiy's words about how he wished something like Haikyuu was available back when he was only getting into volleyball as it would've taught him so many useful things :")
That is the beauty of Haikyuu. It hits the nuancey parts of volleyball and team relationships soooooo well, and most people learn these lessons later in their careers.
I am so happy you finally got to this episode! Last episode I commented that this is my favorite non match ep of haikyuu ever. I just love it for Kageyama because he got to reclaim the name King into something positive so he can finally let go of his past fully. He found the right balance between Oikawa and Atsumu’s advice about his attitude as a setter. This is of course with the help and understanding of Karasuno. After this ep, I kept thinking to myself the way Kageyama was holding off on his thoughts about everyone’s performance (as the best player of the team with a huge margin) and simply just adjusting to avoid conflict bc of his past is KINDA stunting their growth as a team and now they are all learning to communicate, not just Kageyama. His technical skill as a setter is already high enough as it is so I love that the training camp and ball boy for both him and Hinata is more of a training about their mental state and what they think of volleyball in general, and not too much about technicalities. Also, at this point the volleyballisms and lessons of the show this point forward is actually getting really technical because the anime thinks the audience is comfortable enough to understand it so I know I would love your future reactions to this season. I cant wait!
I am from the same prefecture as Atsumu, but Kansai people tend to be sarcastical when they are aware of the essence of things and the other person is not aware of it. I think it's a casually sarcastic line to say to Kageyama that he's clever. Atsum doesn't think too deeply.
I knew you’d love this episode! The friendship/acceptance themes of this episode just hit you right in the feels. The third years are so adorable this episode. Suga being mother-hen from the sidelines. Asahi being a so patient and kind to his juniors. Daichi telling Kageyama he’s always been the best.
This is a big turning point for Kageyama If you remember S2 last episode when Oikawa was talking to Ushijima he said Kageyama is nowhere near his level yet. But after this change in mindset he will be
On the technical level, Kageyama was already above Oikawa (and everyone else). What he missed, and what held back all his skills was psychological factor. If Kageyama didn't had these psychological issues, his whole character and the plot would have had no point. Once he overcomes his "mental block", nothing can stop him.
This and the "take it easy" espisode are part of the random episodes I really love because of the character development we see for each of our boys. And all of them payoff later you'll see!!
essentially, kageyama had to learn how to have the type of rship he has with hinata, but with the rest of the team too - where, yes, you communicate and accommodate, but you also continue to push and challenge each other for the better. "you can jump even higher" seemed like a build-up to this episode right here.
I loveeeeeee this episode so much! I used to think Karasuno members were good and knew each other enough (because they beat Seijoh and Shiratorisawa so I assume that they're good together) but boom! this episode was released and I realized that Karasuno members are good together yet still have things to learn more about. I'm really happy and proud of the boys! "I'm not gonna stoop down to your level" "so now you can fly" ...oohhh this made me feel so good every time watching these scenes
This is one of my favorite episodes of Haikyuu! Love the fact that Hinata was first to come to Kageyama's aid while he was still adjusting this episode. Hinata since episode 1 admires Kageyama for being the King of the court despite that nickname carrying a negative impact on Kageyama. Through out all the Seasons Kageyama never stopped being the 'King' when it comes to Hinata, he always calls out Hinata whenever he makes a mistake. We just get used to it since Hinata usually just takes it cause of his hunger to improve and its often played for laughs. Hinata even got pissed at Kageyama for backing down back at S2 training camp and that's been the nature of their relationship from the start, constantly pushing each other to be better.
Let's all say thank you Miya Atsumu for making the goody two shoes comment🙏 Atsumu is very direct and literal. He means exactly what he says. There wasn't any ill intent behind anything he said, he's just a straightforward guy (which makes him a rude brat sometimes but he's a good boy😂). I totally get though why he comes across as someone who is scheming and sketchy but he really isn't😂
I love how Hinata is the center of everyone here (well he is the main character anyway lol), he has such a good communication skill for being able to talk to Kageyama and Tsukki like that 😂 I don't know if people in other country but it's quite complex here in Japan because we have kinda strict relationship between junior and senior, I know in this episode seems more focused on how Kageyama talk to the seniors, but it's the same the other way too, if any seniors speak up to Kageyama, it could sounds intimidating or kinda sounds lecturing no matter how they talk to him, whether it's harsh like Tanaka or soft like Asahi, but if Hinata speaks up they're in the same grade so it's easier for Kageyama to digest and also for the seniors to realize Kageyama's condition. So, great job Hinata for being a mediator for everyone here. Tsukki is just the same as Kageyama, I'm glad Hinata point him out too to stop being childish 😂 Also I love how Hinata is speaking about others' growth but he didn't realize that he's growing up too just like what Suga said 😌
Hinata really took the lead in this... like you, I love how he is the mediator. He has the most practice dealing with Kageyama in this way because Kageyama has always spoken to him like this!
Going back to Kageyama and Atsumu and the goody two shoes comment, I think a lot of his thought process was shown in the out of position drills. When he told Kageyama that he looks like he's having a better time playing spiker instead of setter, I think Atsumu was more trying to say "if it's not fun, why are you doing it?" He loves being a setter, so Kageyama looking like he's not enjoying it made him think he'd be better off playing a different position. Kageyama realized that his approach and his faith in his skill might be the wrong way to look at it, and compensated hard the other direction and becoming super accommodating to his team.
God I relate so hard to Kageyama. I was also a really prickly guy throughout highschool and college, overly direct and blunt. People who knew me knew that I don't have bad intentions, but there were alot of people who just found my pompous and/or rude. After a bad wake up call in university, I overcompensated HARD, and ended up where Kageyama is now, overly mindful of tone, and turning myself knto a neurotic mess tiptoeing around people to avoid touching nerves, only to randomly blow up over the most minor of things. In a better place now, and seeing Kageyama walking down that same road has me symphatizing hard.
Another great, fun watch. Loved seeing more of Date-Kou, too. I really appreciate Sugawara's line at 19:14. I've read many comments here & there about how Kageyama was lucky to have come to Karasuno or that he was blessed with such understanding & patient teammates in high school, & that's why he's doing so much better than before. While I wholeheartedly agree with those comments, they also come across as "Karasuno members are so much more understanding teammates than those from Kageyama's middle school", & that always bothered me. 1st off, 3rd yrs in middle school couldn't be expected to be as mature as 3rd yrs in high school. 2nd, Karasuno members never had to deal with Kageyama as he was back then. & 3rd, it probably WAS because of what happened in middle school that Kageyama was trying to change/not be so bluntly demanding anymore, & without that experience, who knows how things would've been with Karasuno members as well, at least at the beginning. Gonna leave my personal opiniions about some of the subs as usual: 11:28 「じゃあ決めてくださいよ!」→ "Then make the damn point". Probably everyone's already aware, but though the tone of the original line is captured pretty well with this translation, the actual line was phrased in a respectable way, more like "In that case, may I ask that you DO make the shots count, please?". 18:36「影山ってぇ、意外とすげぇ気ぃ遣うよなぁ?」→ "Kageyama does worry quite a bit at times". The more literal translation for this would be "Kageyama does rather surprisingly tend to be careful around people, right?". Kinoshita's saying that Kageyama's being careful about the things he's voicing, despite how he seems to come off as someone who'd voice everything without care for what others might think. Not sure "worry at times" quite gets that point across... 19:34 「飛ぶっ!」→ "He jumped!". This is a nitpick, but Hinata is actually saying "He's *going to* jump/fly!" in anticipation for a higher jump than usual, seeing Tsukishima's set-up for the jump being obviously different from his usual form. 22:48「おまえはずっとそうだろ?」→ "You've always been that". I personally believe Sawamura is saying "You've always been that *way*" in response to Kageyama's line right before. Meaning "You've always been doing everything you can to become the best setter", not that Sawamura thinks that Kageyama's always been the best setter. 27:43「甘やかすな」→ "You don't need to spoil me". I was always under the impression that that line was NOT Asahi's response, but Sawamura saying "Don't baby Asahi", so I would change the "me" to "him".
I don’t think that Atsumu said his comment with ill intent, I think he was saying it to help kags grow as a setter. He just phrased it in a condescending tone. Real recognizes real! That’s what I like about this anime, everyone is likeable in their own way!
I think it can be both, Atsumu played with the guy for a feal days and right away recognized his biggest insecurity (and maybe flaw) as a player and pointed it out in the most condecending way possible, being both mean and cool. (honestly it really sets up a rival type character very well)
Interesting, with him commenting that maybe Kags should be a hitter, I thought he was trying to eliminate his competition on a possible future national team as setter by undermining his confidence.
The crowning is one of my fav moments on this show. Kageyama didn't need to let go of his "king" roll he just needed to redefine it. Now he can set high expectations without coming across as demanding. Freaking love this show ❤🔥
I can't stop thinking how great this foreshadowing is on how Date Kogyo becomes the Miyagi powerhouse to rival Karasuno. It's so obvious in hindsight, given how many 5 star seniors are rotating out. In a season where there are no Oikawas and Ushijimas, and with Karasuno's other 2nd and first years as the only pool for replacing Asahi, Suga, and Daichii... they're going to be a pain. I think this generation of rich talent is a 3-year spread from the current seniors to the current freshmen. Anyway this game is so good not only for setting all of that up, but also for all the growth being teased further; all the training paid off just a little, just a taste... making us hot for the tournament.
Kageyama yelling at Nishinoya about getting the way is a throw back to the previous epi at the youth training camp when Kageyama say the libero there do the same thing but also be aware to move out the way for the attackers, so Kageyama knowing that Nish could do the same thing was basically pointing that at, just not in a "nicer way"
A couple people have pointed out the truth behind Atsumu's Goody Two Shoes comment. Which I appreciate I also wanted to mention that the line of the coach from one of the earlier episodes "I want these players to go back home and be confused at the level of play there." Is especially important. Because I think it was directly compared to an almost identical play where the libero did move out of the way, which is why I think Kageyama even noticed here with Karasuno and Noya
"it's intense to the point that I think my heart rate is around 150 right now" oh just you wait... HAHAH one of my favorite episodes of this season (you'll hear me say that about a lot of these LOLL). Kageyama is so lucky to have been "taken in" by the other Karasuno boys and for him to be with such an understanding and supportive team. it's just such a sweet little family and I love them all so dearly. Hinata's "crowning the new King of the Court" scene always makes me teary-eyed :')
This has always been one of my favorite episodes in the season. The growth and communication of everyone, Hinata being the one to constantly call out Kageyama when everyone doesn’t know the best approach to do it themselves, and Kageyama realizing it’s okay to be the king of the court. I love it all
I totally understand getting very excited over episodes like this. I've seen this part so many times and it always gets me to the same spot! Haikyuu really is excellent at uplifting the viewer
I've rewatched Haikyuu like 20 times already between reactions and individually, and I've never ever understood just how important this practice match is, not until you broke it down for us. It's easy to see Kageyama's issue with the team and his progress, but the growth as a team, everyone communicating and speaking out, I've always missed that. So thank you Sarah for the constant lessons :) You're definately one of the best ones in the business because of your unique perspective. Can't wait for nationals!
It's one of the best episodes of season 4, probably the best one from part 1 and definitely my favorite! Our boys learn, they communicate, they grow up so quickly~
"It's interesting that Kageyama mentioned it instead of Asahi" pfft, as if that big puppy would ever dare to say anything that was not praise for Noya xD
I always loved how they kind of put Kageyama's trauma away for a large part of the series and bring it back and handle it so wonderfully in this episode. Very great emotions.
i've watched and rewatched haikyuu/reactions but i love your thoughts the most because you are a high-performance player who is very aware, both of yourself and of a team setting. your input this episode might change the entire way i communicate and think in a team setting so from the bottom of my heart, thank you!
I love this episode it shows character growth and team growth as well with out being over dramatic. Anyways the animation edits are hilarious is there a hotline for Sarah's relationship counselling? 😆
Fun fact: in the original manga chapter for this practice match, it was supposed to be at Date Tech’s gym! So in the manga the Date third years showing up made total sense then hahaha. I’m assuming for budget pandemic reasons, the anime chose to put the match in Karasuno (so they didn’t have to draw new backgrounds maybe), which is fine for the most part EXCEPT when the Date third years crash it feels more inappropriate 😂😂 P.s. i actually love this mini post training arc, even tho the directing and pacing are mildly janky haha. Also i used to think Asahi’s new look was ok, but the fandom really blew up about how s4 did Asahi’s hairline dirty and now i can’t unsee it 😅
Kageyama to Hinata: /CONSTANT YELLING AND INSULTS. DO GOOD, OR ELSE 👿🔥 Kageyama to rest of the team: Oh no I yelled once now they'll hate me :c I love how Kageyama has treated Hinata like his bossy self all along and that doesn't even register in his mind 😂. His internal dialogue is like man I better not be so mean to my teamates "IDIOT HINATA ARE YOU BLIND" I got to be accommodating so I don't get kicked off the team "HINATA YOU MORON I'LL BEAT YOU UP IF YOU MISS".
This is why I extra love the Junior High incident. It's really not a good memory, and it traumatized Tobio, but IMO, he wouldn't be so humble and receptive like he is right now if it wasn't for that incident. And how blessed he is that his seniors consciously or maybe subconsciously helping him process that trauma in the right and positive way (coz RIP Kazuyo-san) Now, he's finding and growing the right way as a setter and as a human being. Lol. 🥹🫶🏻
Kageyama's character development keeps happening throughout the show, certainly, but this episode is special somehow. We see that he's finally comfortable enough with his teammates to critique them. He wasn't, before. He would yell at Hinata and bicker with Tsukishima, but that was basically it. Now they're a team, a family-I love the theme of found family in this series-and Kageyama is where he's supposed to be. Above all, I keep seeing glimpses of friendship between the first years that warm my soul, and I would sell a kidney to have more content about them just being teenagers together. On the romantic end... "So you *can* fly" is basically the whole bible for us Tsukishima/Kageyama shippers, the tension between them in this episode is wonderful.
Gah, this episode is so good! I was so worried the first time I watched it, but it is amazing and allows for Kageyama and the whole team to grow even more! I know this was supposed to be a bit more Kageyama centric, but personally I feel like Hinata keeps stealing the show this season XD I just love how he communicated what he noticed at the training camp with Tsukki to Kageyama, without him he might have not tried to set Tsukki higher so soon! And whenever Kageyama is too brash and straightforward, Hinata comes in clutch, keeping the mood lighthearted and keeping Kageyama grounded because he's never afraid to nitpick him and be just as blunt. Idk, I really love how Hinata is someone who can lift people up and solve conflicts in such a genuine, boyish way by just being himself :D Also loved how last episode ended on Kageyama and Nishinoya about to face off, but this episode dealt with it so quickly without Noya escalating the situation, because he is a great libero and always wants to look out for the team and help them and as soon as Kageyama explained what he meant, he accepted his mistake and that was it. I also love how Tanaka got mad on Noya's behalf haha, it's just like Daichi said, he can deal with someone being rude to him no problem, but he cares about his teammates being addressed correctly, idk, I liked that detail, it's really sweet :) Loved coach Ukai letting them figure things out even if it was in the form of fighting to some extent. I feel like other people might've been too worried and tried to squash it down immediately, making them bottle up those feelings, which would've come to the surface again in a way more explosive way later. This was such a healthy way to deal with the conflict tho and I love how they all expressed how they'd wanna be treated. Kageyama really is blessed with all these people on his team and Ukai and Takeda as the supervisors!
I might be mistaken; I'm no expert! But I do think part of the reason the Dateko third years are taking the practice game so seriously is because there's no conference regular season play; the only "real" games are in the official tournaments, where a team might only play one game before the season is over. So practice games like this, especially against good teams, are probably given more weight and treated somewhat differently than an average practice or scrimmage. And also, despite having to retire as third years to focus on their studies, they still want to cheer on their team and still help them succeed -- it might come across as excessive, but I do find it pretty sweet haha.
remember when he saw that libero for Itachiyama play at the national youth camp (the one with caterpillar eyebrows that was with Sakusa), he was comparing him to Noya and how he doesn't make rolling receives and leaves space for the back row hitters to run up and jump. Also Kageyama is socially awkward so he said it as best he could 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Finally, I love this episode so much. Kageyama keeps his bad memories in mind and unconsciously being goody two shoes to fit himself into his team. Right now, he passed through his barrels and one step more to the road of best setter
Love your reactions Sarah, if you were already this excited during this episode I cant wait for you to watch the last match of this season! The hype is off the charts in that one :)
To be fair to Dateko's third-years, in the manga, this match is happening at Dateko, so it makes sense for them to be there and cheering. Not sure why they switched it in the anime.
Kageyama's growth is a Classic Thesis + Antithesis = Synthesis Old Kageyama's Thesis: I gotta do the best theoretical set, and the attacker is the one that must figure how to hit the ball from there. Antithesis (Oikawa's Thesis): I gotta do the easiest to hit set for each attacker, regardless of the attacker flaws. New King Kageyama (Synthesis): Somewhere in between, I must set to make my attackers improve their flaws and eventually be able to hit the actual best sets possible. This is Kageyama going further in this "Setter Mindset" than Oikawa ever has, and also hints how good Atsumu is, because he saw this "wasted" potential in Kageyama, what Atsumu did to Kageyama isn't that different than the provocations Kageyama is doing to try to make his team mates do better.
haha I enjoyed seeing the sassy 'scary' mode come out we need more of that! but yeah if I was a stranger in the middle of getting yelled at like that for getting in the way I'd be terrified...LOL
hey sarah, this chapter brings back some high school memories, i used to love playing voleyball there, and got decent enough to be a starter even being on the short side, i still was mainly middle blocker, but something always bothered me, there was this tall and lanky guy that was my friend that always got in my nerves while playing, the guy was atrocious, the weakest hands and wrist i have ever seen. His blocks, while high were smashed thru pretty easily, so i got into the habit of helping him and pushing him to be better, but the guy never did, it became a thorn in my side to see a guy that was so tall waste the advantage that he had by being weak and never really working out, as we all started to do around the same time, we ended having a huge fight on a practice match because i wanted him to be more aggressive and he refused, so i tried to goad him by attacking so much on his side that we ended up rolling over his squad with more than ten points of difference, but he only pouted and whined about being targeted, we almost came to fists, and i let him know that he was being a bitch and should have fixed his damn wrist strength during the season, that he should have been better than me at this point, both having started playing at the same time, and him being a good head above me, have you ever encountered anyone like that? some that wasted of a natural advantage by not having even a hint of self determination to get better?
I see people like that all the time. Usually by the time they reach a certain level, they have all been weeded out, but the point is... eventually they get weeded out.
That's a good take. But for me, personally, I think it's bc at the camp, Kageyama tries hard to communicate with the hitters to accomodate them with their tendencies and habits with hitting. Whereas the theme for setters has always been trying to control the game with their sets, which was the essence of Oikawa and Atsumu bc instead of giving them tosses that the hitters want, both of them give the hitters tosses that help them improve or make them look good. And then it circles back to being called a goody two shoes
I was supposed to comment regarding the last part scene in your last video where you unconsciously predicted what happened between kageyama and noya, but I didn't because it will kind of spoil you with this episode. Maybe you know the positions of the players of that scene, it was amusing. Thank you for this video! 💕 kkageyama really meant for Karasuno. He really finally found his people 💕
Love the video and reaction as always. The only thing I would say is why the heck when you said the words "Return of the King" did we get "The Mummy Returns" poster on screen instead of... you know, Return of the King? Hahaha. (11:57)
I think the goody-two shoes comment was because kageyama made it a habit to adapt to the player because he didn't want to lose his teammates again, so he never said anything that bothers him and just adapted this attidude ^^
the only real bad stats for kageyama is most definitely his communication skills and it is nice to see him working on it throughout the series. it certainly did take a while to get addressed fully but as all things like that, over time and practice he can be even better.
Kageyama and Kindaichi got a big regret for only one pass shot, when they were junior high students. A year later, their mind is recovered/rebuilt by Hinata's casual advise. (s4 ep5 and this ep.) If Hinata said advise at that time, their relationship didn't grow worse. Unfortunately, there wasn't a person like Hinata's heart-mind at Kitagawa Dai-ichi junior high.
This initial scene (although I admit my Japanese is not so good to get all the nuances) is very focused on different ways of talking to people, even more so the way Kageyama talks to his "seniors" without caring about all the formalities usually taken. More than that, Kageyama has an almost "offensive" (gangster style) way of talking, as it usually is the "most efficient" way of saying things, and that's why he ends up getting in trouble or making the ones around him mad.
Kageyama being a "goody toe shoes" was making up for the hitters bad habits. Thats why atsumu said that to him. Now he just decide whats the best for their hitters.
YES!!! So so true. I love this.
It definitely sticks to the theme. In the past, when people were talking about Karasuno, they would mention them but almost always
late to the party. the thing with Nishinoya that rings true to his nature is he have the same "hunger" as Hinata.
I REALLY hope they play each other. I can't wait for Kageyama to make Atsumu regret his comment because he will be so much better than him!
@@amai-w8f it’s fine to disagree with her opinions, but you don’t need to allude to future stuff.
@@amai-w8f agreed atsumu is the first setter we met in the series who not only exceeds kageyama in terms of understanding players and game but also in shear talent and agility and i love that
and yes kageyama is not on the level of atsumu . atsumu = oikawa(game sense) + kageyama (natural talent)
@@2ntwins bro... that's a spoiler? I get that you are hyped and all but let her discover everything alone
Everything is literal with Kageyama... Atsumu will regret bringing this to his attention though, I bet!!
@@SarahPavanVolleyball Atsumu would more than welcome getting stronger competition, he is really not like the person you are painting him to be.
Uchiyama Kouki's voice acting tricks this episode to bring out Tsukki's mix of exhaustion and irritation is SO good. God what a voice actor.
He's got practice from voicing Shigiraki Tomura
I love how this entire episode ties with the conversation between Kindaichi, Kunimi and Hinata a few episodes ago. Having Kindaichi still feel troubled about junior high and Kunimi telling him he did his best and need not to dwell on it, just to have Hinata say "ayo fighting is normal" feels like a prelude to everything in this episode
One thing I'd add about Datekô next year is that as opposed to Karasuno, their 3rd years have already left the team. So when the next inter-high comes around, their team will have already played as a unit for a year (whereas other teams will need to adapt to 3rd years leaving, integrating new 1st years, etc.. in just a few months.) I think this will be a huge advantage for them
Really good point. They are going to be a championship contender for sure.

@@SarahPavanVolleyball You should watch "Phoenix" performed live. This song is so good. th-cam.com/video/KO_vtdaeqME/w-d-xo.html
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!! 😂 😂 you know I'm about to go OFF when specific volleyball stuff comes up.
@@SarahPavanVolleyball WE ARE READY :))))
@@SarahPavanVolleyball That's why we're all here though
I am from the same prefecture as Atsumu, but Kansai people tend to be sarcastical when they are aware of the essence of things and the other person is not aware of it. I think it's a casually sarcastic line to say to Kageyama that he's clever. Atsum doesn't think too deeply.
I knew you’d love this episode! The friendship/acceptance themes of this episode just hit you right in the feels.
The third years are so adorable this episode. Suga being mother-hen from the sidelines. Asahi being a so patient and kind to his juniors. Daichi telling Kageyama he’s always been the best.
The interplay between all of the characters was incredible. Everyone was exactly who they are in a very predictable yet fun-to-watch way
This is a big turning point for Kageyama
If you remember S2 last episode when Oikawa was talking to Ushijima he said Kageyama is nowhere near his level yet.
But after this change in mindset he will be
Kageyama is about to mess teams up
On the technical level, Kageyama was already above Oikawa (and everyone else).
That's a really good way of putting it. You nailed it!
This episode was wonderful. I love how it shows that conflict is a normal part of growth and relationships. The boys are going to be UNSTOPPABLE!!
Let's all say thank you Miya Atsumu for making the goody two shoes comment🙏
Atsumu is very direct and literal. He means exactly what he says. There wasn't any ill intent behind anything he said, he's just a straightforward guy (which makes him a rude brat sometimes but he's a good boy😂). I totally get though why he comes across as someone who is scheming and sketchy but he really isn't😂
I love how Hinata is the center of everyone here (well he is the main character anyway lol), he has such a good communication skill for being able to talk to Kageyama and Tsukki like that 😂
I don't know if people in other country but it's quite complex here in Japan because we have kinda strict relationship between junior and senior, I know in this episode seems more focused on how Kageyama talk to the seniors, but it's the same the other way too, if any seniors speak up to Kageyama, it could sounds intimidating or kinda sounds lecturing no matter how they talk to him, whether it's harsh like Tanaka or soft like Asahi, but if Hinata speaks up they're in the same grade so it's easier for Kageyama to digest and also for the seniors to realize Kageyama's condition. So, great job Hinata for being a mediator for everyone here. Tsukki is just the same as Kageyama, I'm glad Hinata point him out too to stop being childish 😂
Also I love how Hinata is speaking about others' growth but he didn't realize that he's growing up too just like what Suga said 😌
Hinata really took the lead in this... like you, I love how he is the mediator. He has the most practice dealing with Kageyama in this way because Kageyama has always spoken to him like this!
Did anyone see the dog on the towel at 15:33, it reminded me of Nira from 'Run with the wind'
So happy to hear that you are in a better place now
it's so relatable
Gonna leave my personal opiniions about some of the subs as usual:
11:28 「じゃあ決めてくださいよ!」→ "Then make the damn point".
(honestly it really sets up a rival type character very well)
@@-piras yeah that’s true as well! That’s why this series is so good!
Dateko is going to be GOOD next season. No doubt.
Which I appreciate
I also wanted to mention that the line of the coach from one of the earlier episodes "I want these players to go back home and be confused at the level of play there." Is especially important. Because I think it was directly compared to an almost identical play where the libero did move out of the way, which is why I think Kageyama even noticed here with Karasuno and Noya
"it's intense to the point that I think my heart rate is around 150 right now" oh just you wait... HAHAH
one of my favorite episodes of this season (you'll hear me say that about a lot of these LOLL). Kageyama is so lucky to have been "taken in" by the other Karasuno boys and for him to be with such an understanding and supportive team. it's just such a sweet little family and I love them all so dearly. Hinata's "crowning the new King of the Court" scene always makes me teary-eyed :')
You are my favorite Haikyuu reactor. 🥺 I always love the analysis from professional stand point. 🧡
This has always been one of my favorite episodes in the season. The growth and communication of everyone, Hinata being the one to constantly call out Kageyama when everyone doesn’t know the best approach to do it themselves, and Kageyama realizing it’s okay to be the king of the court. I love it all
It’s my fav ep of the entire series. It concluded kageyama’s character development in the best way possible imo
Kageyama's smile might be kinda creepy, but just look at him brimming with confidence now; absolute unwavering belief in oneself.
I totally understand getting very excited over episodes like this. I've seen this part so many times and it always gets me to the same spot! Haikyuu really is excellent at uplifting the viewer
Yep, that definetaly is one of my favourite haikyuu episodes. For me it's the character developements that makes haikyuu special as a sports anime!
Super episode and don't apologise for talking too much. Your reactions are the best!
I appreciate that! Thank you!!
I wonder if Noya knocking Tanaka down with a double rolling thunder a few eps earlier was a flashforward/hint for this
I absolutely cannot wait for your reaction of the next tournament!

There is... feel free to call anytime 😂 😂
Fun fact: in the original manga chapter for this practice match, it was supposed to be at Date Tech’s gym! So in the manga the Date third years showing up made total sense then hahaha. I’m assuming for budget pandemic reasons, the anime chose to put the match in Karasuno (so they didn’t have to draw new backgrounds maybe), which is fine for the most part EXCEPT when the Date third years crash it feels more inappropriate 😂😂
P.s. i actually love this mini post training arc, even tho the directing and pacing are mildly janky haha. Also i used to think Asahi’s new look was ok, but the fandom really blew up about how s4 did Asahi’s hairline dirty and now i can’t unsee it 😅

Been waiting for this so long, this season is incredible for character arcs
Kageyama to Hinata: /CONSTANT YELLING AND INSULTS. DO GOOD, OR ELSE 👿🔥
Kageyama to rest of the team: Oh no I yelled once now they'll hate me :c
I love how Kageyama has treated Hinata like his bossy self all along and that doesn't even register in his mind 😂. His internal dialogue is like man I better not be so mean to my teamates "IDIOT HINATA ARE YOU BLIND" I got to be accommodating so I don't get kicked off the team "HINATA YOU MORON I'LL BEAT YOU UP IF YOU MISS".
love this episode, love this react :') SO excited for what's coming up
I don't think I'll be able to handle it...
This is why I extra love the Junior High incident. It's really not a good memory, and it traumatized Tobio, but IMO, he wouldn't be so humble and receptive like he is right now if it wasn't for that incident. And how blessed he is that his seniors consciously or maybe subconsciously helping him process that trauma in the right and positive way (coz RIP Kazuyo-san)
Now, he's finding and growing the right way as a setter and as a human being. Lol. 🥹🫶🏻
Omg the super background editing joke of Kageyama being elevated 😂
KagaTsukki you say? 👀👀
brb just gonna pop over to ao3 real quick lol
The chemistry, the growth! It really is exciting to watch!
Love your reactions! The way you get excited while watching really shows how much you genuinely enjoy the show, love it!
Idk, I really love how Hinata is someone who can lift people up and solve conflicts in such a genuine, boyish way by just being himself :D
Also loved how last episode ended on Kageyama and Nishinoya about to face off, but this episode dealt with it so quickly without Noya escalating the situation, because he is a great libero and always wants to look out for the team and help them and as soon as Kageyama explained what he meant, he accepted his mistake and that was it. I also love how Tanaka got mad on Noya's behalf haha, it's just like Daichi said, he can deal with someone being rude to him no problem, but he cares about his teammates being addressed correctly, idk, I liked that detail, it's really sweet :)
Loved coach Ukai letting them figure things out even if it was in the form of fighting to some extent.
I love how you got soo excited about this episode! I loved it so much too! They are growing soo much in this season!!
On another note I was genuinely surprised that The Mummy was used as reference at 11:57 and not LOTR 😂
Also Kageyama is socially awkward so he said it as best he could 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haikyuu is the best and so are your reactions!!!!
thank you! (and Haikyuu is the BEST!!)
Finally, I love this episode so much. Kageyama keeps his bad memories in mind and unconsciously being goody two shoes to fit himself into his team. Right now, he passed through his barrels and one step more to the road of best setter
Love your vídeos, i learn so much about volleyball just by watching and listening your comments keep going
Love your reactions Sarah, if you were already this excited during this episode I cant wait for you to watch the last match of this season! The hype is off the charts in that one :)
Great reaction as always! I really love hearing your thoughts on the sensitive details and your views as a volleyball player. Thank you.
12:04 editor there is literally a classic movie called return of the king bahaha
I love seeing everyone's reaction to "then make the damn point!" This is probably one of my favorite episodes.
Highlight of the week again. I always prep a nice snack/meal and get comfy for this :D
To be fair to Dateko's third-years, in the manga, this match is happening at Dateko, so it makes sense for them to be there and cheering. Not sure why they switched it in the anime.
I love it when Sarah gets fired up
one of my favorites, so much tension, but so much communication and growth. Thx for sharing your reactions
Favorite episode… favorite reaction so far!
I’m also pumped! So hyped and it’s not even an official match yet! ❤
I thought every episode is your favorite.... 👀
@@SarahPavanVolleyball yes every episode is my fave but this is my fave reaction from you so far! 😂
Kageyama's growth is a Classic Thesis + Antithesis = Synthesis
Old Kageyama's Thesis: I gotta do the best theoretical set, and the attacker is the one that must figure how to hit the ball from there.
28:08 I just know you were about to say something nice about our boy Takeda-san, sad it got cut from the edit
It's the music She had to break it up, unfortunately
haha I enjoyed seeing the sassy 'scary' mode come out we need more of that! but yeah if I was a stranger in the middle of getting yelled at like that for getting in the way I'd be terrified...LOL
Once again Sarah is quick to notice character changes. Real quick to correctly explain kageyama’s new higher standards.
hey sarah, this chapter brings back some high school memories, i used to love playing voleyball there, and got decent enough to be a starter even being on the short side, i still was mainly middle blocker, but something always bothered me, there was this tall and lanky guy that was my friend that always got in my nerves while playing, the guy was atrocious, the weakest hands and wrist i have ever seen.
kkageyama really meant for Karasuno. He really finally found his people 💕
Love the video and reaction as always. The only thing I would say is why the heck when you said the words "Return of the King" did we get "The Mummy Returns" poster on screen instead of... you know, Return of the King? Hahaha. (11:57)
Lol that call Sarah for consultation broke me lmao 😂😂😂
couldn't wait for the episode to drop so i joined the members only. cant wait for the next episode!!!
Thanks for joining!! If you haven't already, be sure to join our Members-Only Discord server!
I think the goody-two shoes comment was because kageyama made it a habit to adapt to the player because he didn't want to lose his teammates again, so he never said anything that bothers him and just adapted this attidude ^^
Amazing reaction🔥👍
the only real bad stats for kageyama is most definitely his communication skills and it is nice to see him working on it throughout the series. it certainly did take a while to get addressed fully but as all things like that, over time and practice he can be even better.
Kageyama and Kindaichi got a big regret for only one pass shot, when they were junior high students.
A year later, their mind is recovered/rebuilt by Hinata's casual advise. (s4 ep5 and this ep.)
If Hinata said advise at that time, their relationship didn't grow worse.
More than that, Kageyama has an almost "offensive" (gangster style) way of talking, as it usually is the "most efficient" way of saying things, and that's why he ends up getting in trouble or making the ones around him mad.
everyday waiting for your update,,,, thankyou for update❤
Sarah is just so adorable!
21:52 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I can't lol
I love your reactions so much😊
The show is about volleyball, but what they really volley is your feels.
There are so many great moments in Season 4.
Kageyama being a "goody toe shoes" was making up for the hitters bad habits. Thats why atsumu said that to him. Now he just decide whats the best for their hitters.
