Making custom wooden signs has always been a great deal of fun for me. I've made them with many different tools and materials. This video shows the most efficient way to make high quality signs for small business sales or gifts to friends and family as a hobbyist. I show the steps and tips for making 3D layered signs as well as ideas for designs, materials, and all the possibilities.
Additionally, I showcase the xTool P2, a 55Watt CO2 Laser and show how this unit or the other laser machines can transform your projects and exponentially increase efficiency. Even with zero woodworking or laser experience, you can be up and running in no time. Bottom line, this machine is incredible and can help your small business or side hustle explode with productivity and profit. It's pretty awesome for hobbyist projects too.

The sander I use has amazing possibilities that virtually eliminates all hand sanding. Seriously. Particularly using their foam abrasive pads, I was able to clean up any burn residuals in no time. I have never seen a workshop that was clean, organized, and full of colors. Most workshops are dusty and scattered. beautiful work.
Well, it’s rarely clean. Just for the videos 😆 But much appreciated!
Wait, a HD Panel saw that works?? That is as rare as the Loch Ness Monster!!! Great video BTW!!
I always get great inspiration from your instructional videos, and this one is no different! Thanks for all the care you put into each one!
Thank you so much friend!
Excellent video tutorial. Thank you for sharing the knowledge!
Thanks so much, very informative. As an old retired shop teacher I bet your students love you as a inspirational educator. Stay well and safe out there.
Awesome! Love when I can do some projects with my fifth graders!
I'm going to be 100% honest, I watched this and subbed just for the Kraken signs!
Great video, some great tips here, enjoyed it.
Love the shop assistant!
Great content and pacing. Beautiful results.
Thank you so much!!
Great video! Cool items made. I can’t wait to get my hands on this machine.
Great video thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Lots of great ideas, I am impresed at all your work!
Great video! I would love to see a more indepth video showing how you build those with the software and CO2 laser.
Im here for the Kraken, looks awesome
I love you! I've been looking for something like this.
Hope it helps!
I enjoyed watching. Thank you and for reminding us about copyright
Thanks for all the information!
Thanks for the ideas, may God bless you
My dad built custom cabinets after he retired. His shop never looked as immaculate as yours. I think I still have sawdust in my lungs from 1999! LOL
Love the Hogwarts sign. May have to steal that idea! :) New subscriber because of that! LOL
I’ve been using my thunder for 7 months, and I just found out about staining. Never thought about it! Husband even owns a wood shop!
It’s one of my favorite methods. So quick and inexpensive.
I own a sign business. Great job on the detailed video!
Thank you so much!
Not only are your signs bad ass but so are the teams. Hopefully, we'll get the Sonics back again soon. (Even if it will never be what we had). I do signs, Woodworking & refinishing furniture for fun on the side. Was happy to find your channel since your taste is good! LOL! Keep up the good work!
Awesome! Hoping the Sonics will be back within a few years now that Climate Pledge is done and the Kraken are rocking.
Great video! I am going to purchase a laser cutter soon and this was very helpful. When cutting acrylic, is there protective film on both sides? If so, do you remove the backing and add the double sided tape before cutting? The double sided tape is a game changer, I use it a lot for my paper projects. Thank you for the detailed video.
Great video with valuable tips
It would be great if you could do more videos like this..
You are getting very good at making videos.
Thank you
Thanks for the video! What kind of clear coat do you use iver the stain?
I would love to see how you stack acrylic designs in software. I am looking into making badge reels and would like to learn the stacking process, something different. Thank you!
The panel saws I have seen are near perfection, it’s the knucklehead staff member who makes the mistakes. I never hesitate to show them how to use those saws, they probably hate me.
I came here to give you a thumbs up and say GO COUGS!
Appreciate. Rough weekend for you, but great looking team. Hoping the conference issues get figured out soon!
Just a tip for all of you out there. My go to material is called RightPly and is sold at Home Depot also, very inexpensive as it’s sold as underlayment, comes in 3/32” and 3/16”, cuts great and takes paint much better than mdf.
I was contemplating getting a D1, for hobby but then I came across Alienfox combo CNC and laser. Any thoughts on those?
How thick MDF and ply boards do you recommend for the signs? Great video and thanks for sharing.
These are 1/8” sheets just for ease and the extra weight. I have done 1/4” and 1/2” for backer board though. Just have to account for the added weight.
I am curious about the permanence of the double sided tape. Does it not give out over time?
I am currently making wood signs and logos myself. I own a D1 10W. I am currently working with Baltic Birch and Basswood. I struggle a lot with warping. I want to upgrade to a CO2 to start using MDF because my 10W takes a lot of passes to cut MDF. I want to sell a little more before I make the jump into a CO2. You have any advice on the warping with baltic birch and basswood?
do you think the D1 would cut through the shower board or would it be to reflective? Go Hawks!!
What did you spray on the engravings? @like 9:40
Nice work !!! Hope to see a more step by step video on layering
i thought a diode laser cannot cut acrylic? im new to it and just got a diode 20 watt laser but was scared of trying it. Is there anything to help us understand acrylic with diode lasers more?
What exactly is the home depot shower panel? Is it laser safe to cut?
How about MDO for exterior projects?
Where do you get your thin mdf?
Does dell vostro run lasergrbl decently? Or a dell Intel 7?
I would love to see beginner instruction videos for the XTool software!! I’m old and struggling to learn the software. I bought the XTool F1 but haven’t made anything yet even though I bought some Etsy svg files. It would be great if you could walk us through every detail of making something 🤓😬🤞
Yes! I’ll definitely be adding a XCS software video to show the steps.
@@SixEightWoodworks Yay! Thank you! Looking forward to watching the video!!
What adhesives are you using? Your works are awesome!
Thanks! I’m using these: amzn.to/3ZxnQql I also use these:amzn.to/3rva7nd
@@SixEightWoodworks about that double sided tape, do you stick it to the material first and then you laser cut them?
Sorry if I missed this part but are you adding the double sided tape to the back of the material before your laser? Then running your file and the laser is cutting through both?
You got it. Should have shown it in this video. I did in my ornament video at 13:29 th-cam.com/video/gxuARZbm_9Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VBdUm-cdyfS5ScGJ
I'm also in the PNW, where do you get your MDF and ply?
The thin MDF I order online. Ply, I just use the big sheets from big box stores. Always looking for a local source though.
Great video!! What software do you use?
Thanks. I use xTool’s XCS software. Very intuitive and free.
I got kind of lost as video is moving so fast. Did you leave double sided tape on when you cut it?
Do you find that the laser offers a better ROI or more efficient way to make money than, say, your previous "traditional' woodworking products like the charcuterie boards and such? I'm debating whether to invest in a CNC and/or laser cutter to make a few bucks as a side hustle.
I’d say the laser would be a better ROI than the CNC. Definitely quicker and more efficient than the CNC. But depends on what you plan on making. With the laser, you don’t need additional woodworking tools to complete products and get a quick sale. With the CNC or other woodworking tools, more tools/bits and consumables are necessary. But again, there’s variables and you might eventually want to branch out and change it up/expand your options. Hope that helps!
@@SixEightWoodworks Thank you so much for your very informative reply. I hadn’t thought about the additional tools and greater number of consumables needed for the CNC. It’s great to see you branch out and share your learnings with us!
What brand of stain did you use for the plywood???
Tia
I used Varithane
I have the XTool D1 Pro 20 Watt Laser can that cut Aryclic? I hear no only CO2 Laser can. I'm I wrong?
There are some acrylic limitations with Diode lasers. I’d test out 1/8” clear or black before a big order of acrylic sheets. I know acrylic is typically best suited for CO2 lasers.
Do the CA glue and double sided tape make for a permanent hold?
Yea, they should. Unless there’s extreme shifts in humidity or extreme heat fluctuations, as indoor signs, they should be just fine.
Wait are you from Vancouver wa ?
LOL!!! I think you mentioned licensed products enough times. 🤣😉
Maybe just one more time to cover my backside 😆
i think most of us wondered in some Point how these are made 😁
Thanks!
How do you match the correct colors of characters and sports logos?
I just try and get as close as possible. Took some time finding different color acrylics and have quite a few spray can colors now.
Where do you source your MDF?
Big Blue Laser design or Craft Closet are good sources
Go Hawks!, Bring our Sonics back!, Let’s go Kraken!, Sea us rise! Sounders til I die! Hmm.. did I miss any?
You got it! I mean, guess we could add the Dawgs, Cougs, and Zags. But great era for Seattle Sports. Just need those sonics back…should be a few years I think.
I see a bunch of Kraken logos... 😁
Yeah!! 🦑🦑🦑
need to know on doing charcuterie boards on the laser how to keep the engraving dark not to wash out when wash
After engraving add some board oil or wax. If the recipient maintains the board it should stay dark.
How do you get the templates?
I just add an outline in the software to what is getting cut so I get the template as well. I’ll work on making a more detailed video in the future with the software.
@@SixEightWoodworks what software do you use? I have v carve a wood router. Is it possible with this?
Try to find somebody in Homedepot to cut for you
It can be a challenge for sure!
You don't really talk about how to set up your layouts in order to do the layered sign look.
Great news winnie the pooh is now public domain
The tiger is not tho. Also the disney version of pooh is still in debate.
what about all the IP infringement?
Yep, I talk about it a bunch throughout the video. These are just tests at home. Not selling any copyrighted items for sure.
You often say that you do not sell licensed products but it is also illegal to make them for your own use as well. No one will likely know if you do but I wouldn't advertise it. I'm not judging you just giving you a heads-up...
Really a sales pitch for xTool and nothing to do with the title.....Where was how to make layered signs??? You show some but nothing on how.....CLICK BAIT
90% of the video shows exactly what the title says. Not sure what video you watched.
