    Time: 5 hours
    Cost: $100 and Up
    Skill Level:
    Moderate
    Tools:
    Gloves
    Utility Knife
    Reciprocating Saw
    Hammer
    Nail Gun
    Vacuum
    Table Saw
    Shopping List:
    _” Poplar
    5/4 Poplar
    Spray Paint
    Picture Window
    Caulking
    Stained Glass Film
    Steps:
    1. When working around broken glass, always wear gloves.
    2. Carefully remove the broken pieces of glass.
    3. Break the window muntins to access the rest of the glass.
    4. Remove the frame for the sash by scoring the paint and pushing it forward. A reciprocating saw may be required.
    5. When working from the inside, fillers may be required to get the jamb to the correct dimension.
    6. Create rabbeted pieces to act as a shelf for the new sash to sit against.
    7. Use a spray paint to prime the new rabbeted stops before installing.
    8. Create a filler piece to turn the angled sill into a flat surface.
    9. Remove the corners of the rabbeted stops so they fit together snugly. Install the rabbeted stops into the jamb.
    10. Use caulking to seal around the window opening.
    11. Install the new sash. Safety glass may be required, depending on the application.
    12. Toe nail the sash into the jamb and caulk the inside of the window.
    13. Apply a stained glass film to the inside of the glass for privacy or decoration.
    Resources:
    The tempered glass replacement window used for this project was custom ordered from JB Sash and Door (www.jbsash.com/ ). Pre-built tempered glass windows are typically limited to a small selection of sizes. Most window and door manufacturers/suppliers can custom order almost any size tempered glass window.
    The window film used to dress up the tempered glass can be found at the local home center. The window film is manufactured by Artscape (www.artscape-in... ); the style and size is Summer Magnolia Decorative Window Film, 24" x 36."

    That might be the single worst place for a window I've ever seen lol. Nice job working with what you're given, Tommy!

      Totally agree! The longer I watched the video, the more I was confused about why that window existed.

      any window that low will get damaged easily by objects bumping into it. im guessing its just there for natural lighting for the stairs.

      city life guys. I have seen these hell windows moving into house's slashed into 3 floor apartments my whole life. They are usually in a bad spot and the O.G. style is always decorated.

      Lol --I was thinking the exact same thing. I thought Tommy was going to remove the window completely and show us how to continue the wall and exterior siding. That said, I also agree he did an amazing job with the new window!

    Tommy you are the man and i have been watching you for years and i enjoy watcing your repair techniques. My question is you had to have that window made to go into that opening and most of these big box stores don't have items like that to fit what you need these days and and most of the time the window companies don't want to make just 1 window like that without ordering a bunch of windows.

      If a woman walks with a dress through that staircase, the neighbors could see underneath her dress if it was a clear window

    • @dchristi09
      @dchristi09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look at 0:20, there isn't a neighbor's window across and below from the original window. It's off to the side. You'd have to be right at the window to try and look up someone's dress, so that's a risk for the neighbor to be caught peeping. The laminate sheet looks tacky.

    Previous owners of my house replaced two windows almost identical to what was shown in this video, they have not aged well allowing leaks into the house. I know that can happen with any window, but just a word of caution. I don’t think it’s a long term fix. One window we already replaced with a pre-manufactured window and the other one is going to be replaced soon.

    What's the trick for measuring the angle of the sill. At 3:10, Tommy talks about ripping a piece to follow the angle of the sill. Thoughts?

    • @andrewjanz7287
      @andrewjanz7287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use two scraps of wood - one for horizontal, one for vertical. Mark with a pencil or marker to note the angle or pitch of the horizontal against the vertical, then transfer the angle to the wood being cut to fit.

  • @grandmaraps

    Can you install a functioning window this way? That is, from the inside only?

    • @Boforsho
      @Boforsho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they are called replacement windows. They work well in older homes with the old wood windows that had the weights on ropes. You take the old window out leaving the stops in and the new replacement window slides right in. Few screws and some caulk and you can update your old single pane window to a double pane window in just a few hours

    • @SaltySugar
      @SaltySugar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are windows that can open that would fit this situation. And all the while safe. Tis the season of money? No, never. Being real though, yes, motion windows can be installed. This was a recovery safety situation really all in the while of being green saving heat/ cold type of thing on the quick side. Motion window would have cost more and maybe another amount of video more explaining. Motion being a sliding type or axis open idea.

      Has to be an older house, the stairway must of been in a darker area so that window would provide some light for them. Of course now that's irrelevant.
