November 5st: they already had Christmas decorations, he always hated how quick they went from one thing to the next ignoring anything that came before like trash. Alas art imitates life. He opens his lab, a series of doors open, one passcode after the other each more ridiculous and specific then the last, ending with one final question what do you fear the most, there was only one answer, one thing stopping him from reaching his true potential, b a t. The final door opens showing a lab, at a glance it some would say it's completely normal but with a closer look, all around are canisters of gasses and bats in glass cages, decorations for the Christmas season but something is wrong. The decorations seem like they are leaking. He grabs his lab coat and also a gas mask, they're so dirty and worn that they've turned brown. But hes much too busy to get new ones. Walking to the end of the lab in a corner so darkly lit you would have to know it's there to find it, is a man tied to a stretcher, there a machine breathing something into him as the doctor takes out a orange syringe and injects him with it. He begins to shake violently as we go back to the desk and see a name plate that is cracking: Jonathan cranes. Fear of the bat. I thought that this would be a good Matt Reeves movie where it's Christmas and Jonathan cranes obsessed with over coming his fears wants to study the bat, I was thinking like the Batman 1 there would be like a secondary villain, either a clayface who is an actor that scarecrow kidnapped and accidentally turned into a monster with his experiments which could make him more sympathetic and potentially a part of the bat family, are a bane that is just a street level thug before being given an enhanced thumb of venom by Jonathan Crane. His ultimate plan I think would have him spreading gas through the copious amounts of decorations spread throughout Gotham. I want him to have more than just a few guests so I imagine him with a very large arsenal of gases and toxins one he might use on himself at the end to transform into something that looks like the Injustice 2 scarecrow.
hot take - Comics should be sold in grocery stores again! The lack of convenient access is basically the only reason why I struggled to start getting into comics!
I remember in the early 2000s, when my dad would pick up an issue of Lee/Ditko Spider-Man along with the newspaper whenever he went out. It was something to always look forward to. I also remember seeing trades of Ultimate Spider-Man on the book shelves at my local Target, which I would read while my parents were shopping when they took me with them. God that takes me back.
They should also be cheaper, in my country they're like 50 bucks each, that forces me to pirate them because there's no way i'm paying that much for something i can read in less than half an hour
The 4 main barriers to getting a newcomer into comics: 1) Easy Access to buy like in grocery stores, bookstores, etc 2) Price: $4.99 for 1 issue? $5.99? What kid is going to afford that? 3) Where to start: Most people aren't going to start with Action Comics #1. There needs to be a how-to guide that serves as a good jumping on point for new people (and no, rebooting a franchise is not always a good idea) 4) Quality: are the comics consistently good with a consistent creative team?
I mean honestly Scarecrow should be the nemesis for Batman. Joker is the most popular villain Batman has but Scarecrow is so not only a way better mirror but also just fits thematically way more.
@@kendi5391 wrong, scarebat should be the nemesis for batman no but seriously youre right they both use fear as a weapon which is much more interesting than "this guy laughs a lot and this guy never does", like its kinda crazy (or i guess scary) how little effort it would take to turn scarecrow into batmans arch nemesis. you give scarecrow a traumatic past that resembles/contrasts bruces origin story, you give him an intelligent master plan to inflict that traumatic origin onto all of gotham (to mirror batmans vow to insure the opposite) and you make their final confrontation show bruce the error of his fear mongering ways and make him change to be a beacon of hope (i kinda plagiarized "the batman" at the end there but its not my fault that movie is perfect)
It took me a long time to realize but the contrast wasn't their image but rather the fact that one is a dark, serious character, a creature of the night that fights for good, while the other one is a clown, a happy, cheerful, colorful character that kills with a smile. Of course in 80 years, clowns became like a trope of evil
@@yalieyal4362 Well Scarecrow does have two backstories, one where he is bullied in school, later in his psycholist days, called a Scarecrow for being skinny and in the first appearance he was poor. In New 52 his father was a Scarecrow then he became The Scarecrow. I think first one works good enough in my opinion. One of the things I like about Injustice 2 Scarecrow is his dialogue, taunting everyone and their trauma, I'd love to see adapted, really knowing everyone's buttons. I'd love to see Scarecrow as Batman's nemesis in DCU, Long Halloween movie/Arhkam Asylum video game like fear toxin scenes, go all out with horror. Also poor aspect and hatred of rich would be fun, have him fight Court of Owls or something.
One of the best thing about the Rogues is that they are relatively "Low Priority". It's so refreshing to have villains who just want to rob a bank or steal a bit of tech instead of blowing up cities.
So I’m the guy who originally tweeted that opinion and I get it But for me it feels as tho if these rogues were in Gotham they’d barely have 2 pages in Gotham if the worked individually, now whilst Batman does have mr freeze, what makes him interesting is his tragic backstory and motivations rather than his powers as before BTAS he wasn’t well known let alone well received, just look at firefly and how he’s a relative unknown and he has basically the same power set as heatwave Personally I like it when the rogues team up but that’s the only time I really find them interesting, something you can’t say about the sinister 6 for example
@@Abdullah_Hugbanithe rouges are like my favorite DC characters. I think one on one, they are on par if not just as interesting as man DC heroes, let alone villains. Captain cold genuinely is one of my favorite characters to watch do literally anything. I understand he may not be much of a threat, but he’s more interesting from a personal angle.
@@lexofpower2822 It took me like 50 minutes to get through an issue of Watchmen the first time I read it, meanwhile I can read about five issues of Invincible in like 30 minutes. Then again, roughly 6 pages of each Watchmen issue are actually just ‘real’ books, made longer by comic books having much larger dimensions than regular ones.
1:31 Green Goblin is such a compelling Spider-Man villain because he is the antithesis of Peter, but it's so much deeper than just class differences. They both lead double lives, one consciously and the other unknowingly, they both having been gifted (or cursed) with abilities, but Osborn having the Green Goblin corrupt his mind contrasts against Peter's goodwill and hope for others. They both struggle in how their alter egos affect themselves, their families, and their loved ones, but Peter's fight for balance in his life further highlights the insanity and depravity of Norman's unwanted wickedness. Even though a villain like Scorpion has more ties to the arachnid themes of Spider-Man's abilities, on a personal level he doesn't echo Peter's struggles, connections, or ideologies as much as Norman Osborn, and that's exactly the reason why Green Goblin is such a good arch-nemesis to Spider-Man.
this would be so cool! it would also be a good way to get "avengers-level-threat"-tier comment section wars going LMAO (I don't know anything abt the batman or x-men fandoms but a I'm sure a spider-man themed hot takes episode would certainly catch quite a few toxic fans in the web unfortunately. But it'd be engagement on the video I guess! 😭)
Green Goblin not making sense for Spider-Man because Goblins and Spiders are unrelated is like saying Joker shouldn’t be the nemesis of Batman because clowns and bats are unrelated.
He is still criminaly insane. He legally cannot go to a prison. Arkham definitely isn't secure enough though, obviously. But he still belongs in an asylum. (Or 6 feet underground. Jason Todd is right, just kill the Joker.)
Hot take - thematically speaking Dick Grayson taking the Batman identity makes a lot of sense he is reaching his fullest potential and becoming the beacon of hope that Bruce was for Gotham, specially since he was also guiding Damian at the time like Bruce guided him. However, I just prefer him as Nightwing, since I don’t particularly like that he already had an established identity that set him apart and then suddenly went into being Batman.
I mean dick taking the batman role felt like a new chapter in his journey not to mention transform the character into the beacon of hope bruce always envisioned. As for the nightwing title it might be a hot take on its own but tim becoming the new nightwing wouldve been a similar change up from dick's tenure on the mantle and while i think many would see this as following the dick hero persona taken by another robin trend; i feel with tim it couldve been treated like his own journey of self discovery, remember he chose to be robin by his choice in a similar manner terry chose to be batman albeit for diferent motivations. By this point robin is the introduction mantle for sidekicks a right of passage to eventually take up your own identity as a hero. So my proposal for this post battle of the cowl tim is since bruce is now "dead" he wants to search for him as he is in denial so instead of making him red robin and have beef with damain every 2 issues; have dick talk with him understanding that he like the rest of the batfam are processing their emotins regarding bruce and the new status quo moving foward he says to " hey i know thign are a mess right now and i know what your gonna do, i wont stop you but rememberif ever need help just call" and leaves a suitcase for tim to find only for a new version of the nightwing suit ( red version perhaps) with a note " you may not be robin but hope this will help find your new path" giving his blessing for tim to take up the mantle as the new nightwing. The entire story here would be tim drake moving to bludhaven while doing the occasional globe troting in search for bruce. By the end tim finally has gone throught the greive and is back as a better version of himself returning the suit to dick and saying " thank you" now ready to be his own hero debuting his new hero identity (codename: sparrow or cardinal etc.)
9:02, and it's so depressing, I saw alex ross superman art as a kid and I spent my whole life learning how to draw realistically and now some ppl accuse me of using a.i
1:36 by this logic, like none of the superhero-villain rivalries “make sense thematically”. What does a killer clown have to do with a billionaire in a bat costume? What does a flying alien have to do with a bald billionaire? What does a big bald guy in a white suit have to do with a guy who dresses like the devil? if you look at any of these characters at the surface level, the rivalries don’t work thematically.
Seriousness vs fun or Justice vs anarchy for Batman vs Joker Silver spoon rich human vs farm boy alien for Lex vs Superman Morality vs corruption for Daredevil vs Fisk Like Troy said, just because Spider-man archnemesis isn't a visual counterpart, doesn't mean that they aren't rivals in their ideals
Hot take: a superhero mountrushmore is really reductive of the genre because it’s just too big for us to choose 4 and decide they are the most influential ones.
Just finished Batman Beyond with an adult brain. As I was watching it I just kept thinking "Terry is literally what Jason should have been/can be." 6:06
or because people expect a character that has 1 or 2 years worth of storytelling to hit as hard as a character that has 40-60 years worth right out the gate
Hot take: Parker Industries and WebWare (which I think is the basis for the web watches in Spider-Verse) are underrated concepts and had creative value in evolving Peter's character.
Yeah, plus it helped that they had two spider-men at that point so it helped that they were both doing different things. Peter doing more international adventures and miles doing the normal Spidey stuff.
Hot Take!: Peter Parker should be happy and have a happy life and be happily married to Mary Jane. He should have friends that want to make him happy and a job he is happy to have. He. Should. Be. HAPPY! In all seriousness, fuck Marvel! The appeal of Spider-Man is not seeing him get pummeled, it’s him overcoming. It’s like they heard Goblin’s “They want to see a hero fail” speech but somehow didn’t realize that the point of the speech was that Goblin was wrong. The whole point of Spider-Man is that we see us in him. We don’t want to be told that our life is going to be nothing but a never ending series of horrible events. We want to know that life is hard, and sometimes unforgiving, but overcoming it makes us stronger and strengthens the bonds we have with others.
The reason I prefer Doctor Octopus being Spider-Man's archenemy over Green Goblin (at least in the major continuities) is because Otto feels more thematically fitting as a nemesis (scientist with an eight-legged animal motif). Writers also just use him in more fun scenarios. Meanwhile, Norman just has... miserable to read stories sometimes. Like they just want to use him to chip away at whatever little dignity Spider-Man has. From banging Gwen to retroactively being behind the Clone Saga to burying Aunt May alive for months etc... I just can't deal with him. He has no redeeming qualities lmao.
Hot take: there are so many amazing not-superhero comics that are overlooked. A few examples include Hack/Slash, the current Transformers run, Sex Criminals, The Walking Dead, Wytches, Windego Wood, Saga, Preacher, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen and many more. I know some of them are very well known but all comics should be celebrated as much as the next Batman comic.
hotter take: after about volume 2, league kinda sucks. It’s pretty clear Moore thinks popular storytelling after, coincidentally, the time in which he grew up is worthless and the whole book becomes “Old Man Yells At Cloud”
My controversial take is that I like Hank Pym out of the 3 Ant-Men, due to the fact that he’s the star example of fixing your mistakes and becoming a genuinely good person after doing something terrible. Many people will never like or forgive the character because of what he did even when the full context of the story is told, but as a character he’s grown, changed, and redeemed himself far beyond anyone really expected him to.
The reason organic webshooters are a thing is cause without them he's.. not actually very spidery? He has super strength (any animal could work) He can climb walls (Gecko man) He can sense things (honestly more linked to flies than spiders) And then what? Biological webs makes him undeniably a spider but I also like mechanical ones
Yeah it's like you got bit by a radioactive bird but instead of getting the power of flight, you get just a peak not wings. Like It's weird, you got bit by a Spider, of all the abilities you gained, you didn't gain the one that Spider is famous for...
Spiders have two types of hair which sense pressure waves, and their lil brains possess a thing called gate neurons so they don't suffer sensory overload. They instinctively differentiate air pressures caused by harmless versus potentially unknown things. In a way, the danger sense is Peter's most realistic spider ability.
One of the explanations for this that I really like is that due to his body not being able to change enough to implement certain aspects of a spider, (webs, multiple arms and eyes) his body makes up for it by giving him things that are close enough to those. In the case of his webbing, since he can't produce them from his body he instead is given the knowledge to make them and he improved on that with his intelligence.
Hot take: I believe Ben Grimm should have more abilties other than his hide and strength, or at least develop those abilties so he can do more, I'd even settle if he could turn into his spiky monster form willingly. Ofc I understand the fact that his major ability is his heart and will, but having upgrades shouldn't be too much to ask.
Agreed. Reed can stretch the neurons of his brain to become smarter, Sue can use her forcefields to cut through Celestial armor, Johnny can go supernova and Ben... can punch good. But his changing from human to armor should be the evolution of it instead of that being the beginning of his story since that's such a large part of his story.
Part of the reason I love the first two issues so far of Absolute Batman is because they're satisfying reads ON THEIR OWN. I don't have to wait until the trades to finally enjoy the story because every single issue has satiated my hunger.
I would actually love to just get the entire issues of absolute superman and wonder woman when they all come out. They are probably gonna cost like 8.00 dollars or something for each issue
9:56 I agree with this so much. I buy everything as physical TPBs because I don't like reading single issues and I don't like reading digital. But it makes me feel like I'm missing out on new stuff that I want to read like the new Ultimate books and the Absolute books.
9:59 This is why I love graphic novels and wait for every comic that I like to be in an ultimate collection or something else. It's the one reason why I don’t like comics that have issues like 1, 2, 3 and others that happen for months where you have to wait every time.
I think the never-ending serialized format of comics is what makes them special and unique nowadays. How many other mediums are there where you get a snippet of a story every month and can juggled all of these series at the same time, taking them in in bite-sized chunks and knowing that it’s all a part of a grand narrative? But also I agree that individual issues need to be satisfying as well, and any stories that need a slow-burn should either increase their monthly page count or just come out as a volume once every six months or so. I want to feel like my money was well-spent which means getting an enjoyable story, even if it ends on a cliffhanger.
I think people care so much about the organic webbing is that it’s a bigger suspension of disbelief. Yes, being Spider-Man is inherently a massive suspension of disbelief, but there are absolutely different levels of this. The idea that you can gain superpowers is one thing, but the general idea of superheroes is that there is something of a grounded world outside of the superpowered people. Peter is supposed to be intelligent, but there’s a difference between being gifted and building this crazy gadget as a teenager. It makes sense when the series is less grounded, but I think it makes less sense in a more grounded setting. Not like it’s a big deal though
4:20 I like web shooters way more because he can ran out of web way more, when organic he runs out when he's depressed. It's not only a way to show Peter's smarts, but limit him. He needs to hide them to not reveal his identity, etc etc
I think it’s fantastic that Peter came up with a solid molecular substance that can compete with a winch cable. Instead of making a quick buck, he uses his invention to help people.
@@solivagen435 I like that you mention this as a positive because I've seen a lot of people bring that up as a flaw/plot hole like "Peter always complains about being poor but he could just sell his web formula." and it always bothers me because its such a surface level observation that misses the point of the character.
@@koifish835 also if realism is a concern lee and ditko do address it on a pretty early issue where he tries selling it when he needs money really badly but the scientists reject it after finding out the webs disappear after a short time 😭
OMG I'm so glad you talked abt JMS's Spidey run! I know it's not a hot take to be a fan of that run but it's also my favorite run so I got super excited hearing it come up lol, I think that Straczynski's voice for Spider-Man is so solid and really emphasizes the character's perseverance (which mirrors a lot of Straczynski's real life perseverance! His memoir "Becoming Superman" digs into it and it's such a good read, highly recommend lol)
The rivalry between Spider Man and Green Goblin goes beyond just a difference in social class. In essence, Osborn represents the opposite of Spider Man when comes to responsabilty. While Peter is kid who struggle in life and always tries to adapt to his situations find better solutions for his problems, Norman is arrogant, never taking responsability for his actions (as he said in Spectacular Spider Man: Don't apologize. I never do). So when he's force to face the consequence of his actions (ex: Harry becoming addicted to drugs), rather than accepting his mistakes and learning from them, he chooses to blame others (usually Spider Man) and lash out on them.
Here my Hot Take: comics aren't hard to get into because of the decades of continuous storytelling and lore but instead difficult to get into because of availability. If I wanted to read the first Wolverine, not only do I have to find a store where they're sold, but I have to find where they start. Like for example, I was curious who Hellverine was so i googled him. I got halfway through Wolverine goes to Hell before I found out, this isn't the Hellverine I was looking for. For some reason, they lable the possessed version of Logan from that comic as Hellverine as well as the Ghost Rider Wolverine combo. So I found where that story started which was Ghost Rider Wolverine:Weapons of Vengeance. The second part was halfway through the ongoing Ghost Rider series. The part after that was half way through the ongoing Wolverine series. The final part was Ghost Rider Wolverine:Weapons of Vengeance.... how is a casual fan supposed to get through that?
This might be weird to ask but was Jason like stuck in that angry era since he got reserructed by the Lazarus pit, he died like 14 or 15 and he died in the 90’s and came back in the 2000-2010’s. Is that why he is like the angry robin to many people even though he isn’t like in many tv shows
@iamawesome4026 I'm unsure why I am being asked but I think he's Angry because he died... and he usually is pretty angry in most tv shows and movies. Just some portray his character as having moved on
*Hot Take*- Trinity is a legitimately great new character- especially for young girls. Having a “young Wonder Woman” for modern girls to grow up with is such a perfect idea (like they do with Jon and Damian). While I love Donna, Cassie, and Yara, they all lean more adult. Donna is definitely for the adult crowd in her themes; Yara curses and is violent; Cassie would be the best choice but is practically never used today (and hasn’t had a prominent role since the 2000s). My little sister absolutely adores Lizzie Prince, and it’s because it’s written for a girl her age with a character that is just as old as she is. Amazing how that works.😂
3:31 With this video and the last one, I LOVE the attention The Rogues are getting. They are so unbelievably underrated and I love them so much!!! Captain Cold/The Rogues are not only my favorite villain/villains in DC, but my favorite character/characters! They’re not really all that evil, or, at least, not maliciously evil, and they aren’t against being heroes if their city needs them. They’re just so awesome! Thank you, Troy for giving them the attention DC refuses to! ❤❤❤❤❤
I said it before in TMMs video but Wonder Woman should be the leader of the Justice League and take on a more Optimus Prime-esque role as a character and just have more Wonder Woman media in general lol
4:15 just gonna recite a tweet I made a while back lol “Hear me out, what if he had organic webs but still made the webshooters to enhance their versatility, like make them in different forms, like a water hose with multiple settings”
@ meh, kinda but I still like it, allows for him to still have his intellect be shown while also giving him the one power he doesn’t but should have, I genuinely don’t get how he got every power of a spider minus the ability to make webs on his own
Maybe he can have both?? Like his organic webs are more sticky but can't hold his weight so he made his mechanical webs based on his organic ones but they can hold his weight.
6:17 Jason Todd was a great Robin & it's sad that Red Hood has really made ppl forget that. He used to be cheerful. Also having caught upto USM, it definitely was better binged.
Hot take: most (not all, but most) discourse around the characterization of characters in comics comes down to people conflating headcanon/fanon with genuine canon (eg. Wayne Family Adventures)
Hot take of my own: Wayne Family Adventures is canon, it's just not the "prime" universe. Those are genuine versions of the characters and people are just as valid in enjoying those characterizations. Saying WFA doesn't count is like saying any of the other worlds in the multiverse don't count either
@ That’s super valid! I don’t think it’s inherently not-canon, but I do think to some degree the characterization can be out of character and therefore it provides a rather warped narrative on those characters and their relationships/dynamics. But, to each their own!
8:07 It was me, Wally. I made all the adaptations feature Barry instead of you so that *you* would have a slower time being adapted into the silver screen. Tell me, is it slow enough to me to kill Iris? Wally: Who's Iris? Reverse Flash: ...Wait a minute... sorry, got carried away there...
@@polarstriker3854Even if she wasnt i like the thought that Wally somehow wouldnt know who his mentors wife is when they know each other's secret identities.
I loved this formate for a video! If you ever do these again, my hot take is that Nolan's Dark Night trilogy was a poor Batman adaptation. That's not to say that they were not good movies or that Nolan misunderstood the character to the degree that Snyder did.
My hot takes. Trinity shipping should never happen in canon, Diana, Bruce and Clark should only work as friends for the sake of the DC universe and when any of them are forced into a relationship it always feels wrong and ends badly, also it doesn't matter which combination you chose, all of the 3 have better love interests on their own cast anyway. John Kent should has stayed a kid way longer and while him being bi is completely fine, it would be nice if he didn't had the MOST BORING boyfriend in the world. We need less human green lanterns, I feel earth (and any space sector for that matter) should have a max of 4 human lanterns, you have other color corps you can keep Jessica and Simon just give them other colors.
Hot take: We need more Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz Green Lantern stories, either in comics or in the DCU. I'm not saying I'm a Hal Jordan hater, but there are definitely more interesting Green Lanterns who deserve more of the spotlight.
Hot take: Green Arrow is the most deserving character to have a major dc movie (with black canary or not) because of the somewhat almost irrepairable damage to the normal public image the CW show had on Oliver Queen basically making him just another Batman. Also if any hero was to have an origin story in the dcu i would pick him because i still think a lot of casuals dont know it and I think at least one major hero deserves a big origin movie and I think he can be really interesting as a new kinda unexperienced hero who becomes more and more experienced over time.
This video was a great change of pace. You should try more unscripted stuff like this every so often. Also, I couldn't agree more with that "Release by volume instead of monthly" take if I tried! That'd be GENIUS!!
10:58 I feel this is one of the motives Rian North's F4 has been really my favorite book in the past couple of years. It really feels like a sci-fi series where (mostly) every issue (or at most 2-3 ) is a very good entry with a satisfying end. It helps that Ryan North really seems to know his shit when writing sci-fi, specially in the inicial idea of the adventure and often times the twist it has by the end. The relationships are also very well explored, and in interesting parings, for example: Reed has not had a solo adventure with Ben yet (which seems strang), but had with Alicia, and it has some of my favorite holesome moments, and also with Johnny, and it was very fun. Alicia and the kids have been very well written too, and given an spotlight I had never seen they have before, the kids even having issues where the main F4 is only bearly present and the focus really is the kids doing insane shit, all very fun. All this to say, every month the wait seems worth it because the story is always really good!
I absolutely hate organic webbing FOR PETER, its supposed to be a 2099, since Miguel is a freak from a science experiment and for a time he wants to heal this abomination he has become (Claws and Fangs also add to that)
Would love to see more laid back content like this. Don’t get me wrong I really enjoy the scripted videos, but this one felt like all the nerdy conversations I have with my friends
I love that 2024 is the year both Marvel and DC took some of their most iconic characters and gave them a fresh new spin that stays true to the past but embraces a new light. Spider-Man and Batman in the Ultimate and Absolute books still feel like the classic characters but are also so fresh and different. This Spider-Man’s origin is based around choice and dissatisfaction in life and he gets bitten as an adult who had the responsibility but not the power. Batman isn’t born in crime ally but instead grew up in it. Living with his mother after his father got killed on a school trip to the zoo (a trip that was earned by Bruce). This Batman is still a badass, has a no kill rule and fights for justice but here is friends with his rouges, has connections with the city, is working class. It’s brilliant honestly
Hot Take: Mark Waid's Daredevil is the best. It had plenty of darkness and violence, and gave us a Matt Murdock who wasn't miserable to the point of mental illness and/or in a perpetual "pseudo-villain" era.
13:14 they have! But Dick haven't spend that much time with him cuz he was busy with the titans and wasn't on good terms with Bruce at the time and he only worked with them very few times, that's why he felt guilty when Jason died and was like "I should've been there" and stuff
You put a bunch of “DC’s Spider-Man” characters on the screen and you leave out Firestorm? He was the first! Honestly, I do think Barry Allen was relatable but by the standard of the superhero scene he was debuting in. Compared to the alien, Amazon princess and millionaire who were the whole show when SA Barry first showed up, police scientist Barry Allen is more relatable. DC seems intent on trying to create the platonic ideal of the Flash, though. Whether it’s making Barry young and relatable or giving Wally Barry’s job and enemies (reminder: the Rogues were retired for a while). Oh, and I miss when comics were written like soap operas with A plots and B plots.
hot take - The marriage isn't needed for good Spider-Man stories and Brand New Day through to Worldwide was much better than the internet will tell you because they're still hung up over OMD
the marriage wasn’t an obstacle to any of those stories either, the editorial staff at Marvel just likes to pretend it was because they want Spider-Man to have the status quo *they* grew up on
Hot Take: I understand why Spider-man is one of the best superheros to adapt a origin story for because i mean hes a kid just like everyone was at one point in their life. A highschool kid having highschool struggles getting super powers and figuring out himself along the way is just why the character has exploded into what it is now. But i actually prefer nowadays that since we know of the origin of spiderman that i prefer whenever hes a little more older, maybe in college still but with one foot out the door. Or graduated and has a real job, just like the PS4 Spiderman game which is why its my favorite adaptation on film and video game. I think it allows for more gritty stuff and also it allows the introduction of miles which miles and peter together is my favorite duo ever because you get that 15 year old perspective of miles figuring out all the highschool stuff at the start of his journey as well as Peters point of view of all of that as well as being a strong mentor.
Hot take - Wonder Woman should be the leader of the Justice League Superman and Batman shouldn’t be founding members, but rather solo heroes who join the league later
i’ve been loving absolute so far, but my one minor gripe is superman’s “change” being that he came to earth grown up. i think it’s interesting, but that’s supergirls thing already, like we’ve seen it before
8:26 I love this question because as someone who wants to draw his own comic books one day, I always found the idea of drawing comics intimidating. It wasn't till the recent 12-issue series of the Martian Manhunter when I realized that artwork should and does play an important part of storytelling. Alex Ross is my favourite comics artist, but I also enjoy Dan Mora and Gabriel Picolo's art style as well
Great game btw But, it’s not the speed simulator that was descrived in the flash video Og generations kinda has that speed feel, but unleashed really is the best speed wise game Asong as your okay with offbrand god of war kombat
HOT TAKE: Venom as an anti-hero is interesting then a villain because the main reason is usually is the Symbiot is evil and makes you evil, I love the first venom movie because Eddie Brock and Venom are like losers who are trying to save the world, I love that
I don't even know if you can say this is a hot take because it's just my personal list, but Dick Grayson has always been my favourite comic character, so i got him, Bruce, Superman and Spiderman on my mount rushmore. I know that a lot of heroes are way more important than nightwing, but i love Dick.
"The Rogues would be no threat anywhere else" There are multiple stories about the Rogues competently taking on the entire Justice League when Flash isn't there to help.
Relating to the first one, I think arch-enemies' identities and gimmicks are less important than their relation to the hero. Lex Luthor and Joker have nothing whatsoever to do with Supes and Batman's gimmicks, but they work, and I would argue Luthor is the best mirror of Superman because he's an utterly inhuman human, whereas Superman is the opposite. What makes me more bored is when the villains don't work as a contrast personality-wise, or when they're so similar it ends up looking like a mirror match in a fighting game. A lot of DC villains have this problem, like Ocean Master and Zoom. Not enough going on inside, and the hero does everything they do, which is less interesting to me than Captain Cold somehow managing to outwit someone who should be invincible with nothing but freeze rays. Although I did like Ocean Master back in the day when he was Orm's fully human brother and made up for it using magical artifacts. He was more interesting to me then, personally.
Hot take: Both are great, but I think comics handle their Cosmic side better than their City side. The scope of their spaces always made me want to explore the cosmic stories/characters more than the city ones.
Hot Take, and I'm in the Minority on this one: I prefer Jason Todd as a Villain when he comes back to life, it positions him as a bastardized version of Gotham's Vengeance. He does not hate Bruce but he sure as Hell ain't fond of him either.
3:31 While I love a diverse gallery of villains, it has gotten harder and harder for me to stomach the idea of the Rogues and Grodd going up against Flash. Dude resets time like nothing, and it ain't even a power issue for him (Just a moral one). I feel like they need to balance things out between the two, maybe bring up some of the logical weaknesses for Flash (Not having super-senses or Spidey sense, for one). Also, Grodd's telepathy has been pretty underwhelming. I know physically he ain't on Flash's level, but his hyper-intelligent brain should be. Imagine Grodd's astral-self knocking Flash out of bullet time, sending him into Grodd's physical body for a beatdown. Have it be a battle of the mind as well as the body, with Flash needing to dodge Astral Grodd so he can get to Physical Grodd.
I feel this is the case because a lot of comic book writers don't know how to properly power scale or just dont care about it because they are just trying to get the comic out.
12:31 Absolutely! As for my hot take...A lot of comic superheroes have be co-opted by the military industrial complex and western governments, even though SOME heroes such as Superman and Spider-Man started out as champions of the little guy.
6:27 Jason and Dick did interact post crisis in Batman (1940-) #416. Actually really cool team up with dick newly being Nightwing and Jason just becoming the new Robin
I love the concept of the Absolute and Ultimate concepts, and I wish we had more twists on established heroes. Before this Ultimate, and when Marvel was having some sort of identity crisis, I thought of a universe that was more of the classical heroes like Steve Cap, Peter Spidey, Thor and so on, and another with the more new and legacy heroes like Miles Spidey, Sam Cap, Carol Captain Marvel and Kamala Ms Marvel
Here's my hot take: Some villains just don't work in concept with their hero, in example: I love all of Batmans rogues gallery... except Poison Ivy, and my reasoning for that is because of the way her characterization has changed, correct me if I'm wrong but Poison Ivy originally was just a woman who was immune to toxins and poisoned rich men (you go girl!) but in a lot of modern adaptions she is a plant person with the power to control plant life and a burning hatred for humanity, making her in my opinion more suitable for a Superman villain as she's just way to overpowered to be a Batman villain. And I know people will argue that Batman fights Mr. Freeze and Killer Croc but they don't control Kaiju plants that can easily kill Batman, also it would/could mirror Superman's view on people where he sees the good in humans and love them, where Ivy sees only the bad humans do and despises them. TL;DR I think plant person Poison Ivy (who controls Kaiju plants) works better as a Superman villain than a Batman villain

Semi Hot Take: I think Spectacular Spider-Man did all of his love interests perfectly. I especially like the version of MJ since she isnt really as important to Peter yet. That overall makes sense because at this time they barely knew each other. Too many stories shove them together as a couple as if they were "made for each other."
For me Barry Allen's Flash is my favourite superhero which mainly comes from when I got into comics with the New 52 just over a decade ago, but I can't deny Wally has had some far better material to work with especially comparing their beginnings in comics. To me Barry works really well when they emphasise the elements unique to his character like his CSI background and scientific abilities and problem solving which was a big feature of his early comics. Plus I really like how despite his origin being pretty dark with the death of his mother and him dedicating so much of his life to proving his father's innocence, he himself doesn't give into that darkness in the way someone like Batman does despite that event lingering so heavily on him, and he's also not countering it with quips or jokes every second like some think he does. Like you said his personality should be almost a baseline classic superhero personality just with those extra touches; he can be empathetic or quippy when it's needed, but overall he should feel like a kind character who's very much become comfortable in his role as a superhero if that makes any sense, he knows what's expected of him and he lives up to it. I think with Wally also existing I think the ideal dynamic, or rather what I'd like to see is for Barry to not be a dead mentor that Wally is trying to live up to since I feel that trope is a bit tired, so I prefer when they utilise the legacy element of the Flash. I'd love a status quo where Wally has the Flash mantle and is off in his own city whilst Barry exists as a means to give the world a more lived-in feel. He's had his time as a founding JL member but now he's a little bit older, he's married Iris and now is a dad to twin speedsters and has decided to become a part-time superhero who Wally can look to for advice when he needs it, he's maybe even got a far more casual relationship with some of his villains like the rogues, but Barry himself will every now and then be pulled into or willingly help out or wind up in adventures of his own.
I definitely agree while i absolutely love Wally and think his character development and stories are better and more consistent Barry is my favourite flash and one of my favourite Superheroes of all time but I think Barrys death is a big reason why those Stories worķ so well especially the Waid and Jones run as its about living up to the legacy his Uncle left behind, developing his own way of fighting crime instead of just taking what worked for Barry and proving to the League hes more than just Barrys sidekick on his own but on par if not better than him and while it would be fun to see Barry as an older part time Flash i feel Jay Garrick already fills that role of an older Flash who dons the helmet when something goes wrong while Barry is dead before coming back year's down the line. But overall i do respect your opinion and take a lot and think if handled properly who knows it could work
@@Kalel2.0 Oh 100% It's definitely similar to how Jay is often handled, although I picture Barry being a lot more frequently involved than Jay is, Jay I'd say is retired and maybe only suits up for the occasional situation every few years or so, or assists with a situation specific to the Flash family. Plus the joys of crisis and merging the universes has always made me split on the handling of Jay, mainly as to whether he should inherently be from another universe and largely remain there, but then various crisis events have muddied the waters in that regard. As for Barry's death whilst I prefer the idea that him being around as what further illustrates the distinction between him and Wally, similar to say Peter and Miles in the Spider-Man PS4 games, I could still totally see his death having occurred in my premise only it having been years ago and Barry having been back for some time, maybe his death being what influences his decision to become a part-time hero since he comes back years later and sees Wally has a handle on things (actually I now really like that idea, it'd be a great payoff for Wally's growth to hear from his mentor that he succeeded in carrying on his legacy after his death, to the point where Barry trusts him enough to take a step back)
Me personally, I just always vibe more with Barry because he does come across as a very golden age super hero. He's smart, quippy, corny as fuck but he's got a heart of gold and while his past is dark and FULL of tragedy, he still runs forward to save people because its the right thing to do and any vengeance or hate he ever feels is only truly shown when Thawne is involved because Thawne is the literal source of everything bad that happens to Barry Allen and I find that parallel so much more interesting than anything they've done with Wally and Zoom. Dont get me wrong, Zoom is cool and all; but I genuinely prefer characters like Reverse Flash and Godspeed; two villains who are linked to Barry and can only really work in stories where Barry is present unless you give Thawne a reason to fuck with Wally which he has plenty of but they never capitalize on it for likely two reasons. 1. Thawne works better at being a Barry hater 2. Wally is OP as fuck and so he'd probably no diff Thawne if he went all out And that leads me to my biggest gripe with Wally which i mentioned in my comment, genuinely a lot of his popularity in my opinion comes from the fact that he's the faster flash You can dislike power scaling all you want that's fine but the reality is a lot of readers engage to see feats of power from their favorite comic book character and the defining feature of the Flash is "How fast is he?" and when it comes down to Wally and Barry its always a debate about who is faster or more powerful and I always say its Barry simply because of how they explain how the speed force works and how it was created. Barry basically IS the speed force incarnate and every step he takes breathes life into the speed force, that means if Barry so chooses he could literally be the fastest living thing in existence but he chooses not to and he's a bit afraid of his own power at times especially after Flashpoint. Both Barry and Wally know what its like to play God but only BARRY has ever suffered the consequences of that, Wally never really had any issue with getting all that power because he's so pure hearted he'd probably never do what Barry did but that to me, makes him kinda boring. Don't get me wrong, I love a pure hearted hero who will never kill someone no matter the circumstances but you can only take that trope so far before it becomes ridiculous and morally questionable. Like genuinely ask yourself this: Would Barry be a monster or bad person if he killed Eobard Thawne? Any of us and anyone who knows Barry would tell him no because they know Thawne deserves far worse than just death, but to Barry all life even the lives of total scum are precious and it isn't up to him whether they live or die especially where Thawne is concerned because when its TRULY Reverse Flash's time to punch out, Black Flash will come and that hasn't happened yet so Thawne still has a story left to tell. But see with Wally? What is there really to tell with his story? I couldn't really tell you other than maybe giving him some beef with Thawne because really thats the only way I think you could make his story compelling, because what villains does WALLY specifically have history and personal beef with? Grodd is really the only one I can think of but again, Grodd is better as a Barry Flash villain because Barry is vastly smarter than Wally and Grodd respects that as well as hates that Barry is that smart. So I dunno, maybe I am just bias but I just genuinely think people overrate the Hell outta Wally purely because DC said he's faster than Barry
Would love more videos in this format. Also YES completely agree about comics being written for the trade being detrimental. One of the best experiences of reading through older issues, be it consecutively or just randomly, is how self contained the actual story can be. There may be much larger threads, often even ones you know from their impact in their totality. However reading those big moments like Venom through the lens of independent stories building to something, makes that more rewarding. Even something huge and interconnected like Knightfall, is so variable and has so many issues that are written to be just that one issue even if they are facilitated by the event.
Hot Take 1: While I definitely can be bothered by bad writing, the "Well that happened"-/"They're right behind me, aren't they"-type things that everyone decries never bothered me. Hot take 2: While I have my issues with some stuff, (pay your VFX ppl better) I have enjoyed a majority of post-Endgame MCU. Seeing Kamala try to make her own Nick Fury moment with Kate Bishop seems like a no-brainer in hindsight, but that was such a fun scene.
Oh, I genuinely love the majority of the Post-Endgame stuff. Loki, WandaVision, Agatha All Along, No Way Home, Wakanda Forever, Guardians 3, She-Hulk, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Shang-Chi, Deadpool & Wolverine, Ms. Marvel- SO many great movies and shows. Sure, it’s not been as consistent as the MCU used to be, but it’s honestly been quite good overall. Spending more time with these characters in shows is always going to be interesting.
I’ve heard so many good things about it, but I’ve always wanted to read the IDW ones first due to how much praise they get. I think a reprint of the IDW Transformers comics would genuinely be one of the most hype comic re-releases in recent history.
@lordly123 true, although from personal experience I would recommend you to maybe read a bit of More than meets the eye before going in depth, since that's the gold standard of that universe, but it is in the third act of the universe. Also be warry because there are 2 idw universes, the original and the 2019 reboot
hot take- a lot of people complain about comic inaccuracies in adaptations, but since a lot of these stories were written in like the 60’s-90’s there’s some wild concepts and solutions to problems that are just not good 😭 the overall story and themes and characters are great a lot of the time, but the way even the most popular and recognizable stories unfold or conclude is so silly sometimes, i think it’s better to keep the core of what made it special, and build on it. embolden and empower the voice of the new generations to take these stories and characters and use them to say and do something new, something that wouldnt have been possible 30-60 years ago!

@@MaybeManiagreen arrow is an SJW. The Question is an objectivist. Batman is a bat, man.
I got a hot take, Ironheart can work, get good writers and let them cook.
hot take - Comics should be sold in grocery stores again! The lack of convenient access is basically the only reason why I struggled to start getting into comics!
I agree!!!
They really should, I had the same struggle
The 4 main barriers to getting a newcomer into comics:
1) Easy Access to buy like in grocery stores, bookstores, etc
2) Price: $4.99 for 1 issue? $5.99? What kid is going to afford that?
3) Where to start: Most people aren't going to start with Action Comics #1. There needs to be a how-to guide that serves as a good jumping on point for new people (and no, rebooting a franchise is not always a good idea)
4) Quality: are the comics consistently good with a consistent creative team?
I can't wait for Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom to be renamed 'Vic Domm' to be more realistic
Literally Victor Domashev in Fant4stic, that had a gamer tag called "DrDoom" or some shit like that
Probably Victor Van Damme like the terrible ultimate universe.
It’s already happening, I heard they thought Benjamin Tennyson was too unrealistic and renamed the character Ben Ten
Wait…

1:33 By this person’s logic, I guess Joker being Batman’s arch nemesis doesn’t make sense either. What does a clown have to do with a bat?
I mean honestly Scarecrow should be the nemesis for Batman. Joker is the most popular villain Batman has but Scarecrow is so not only a way better mirror but also just fits thematically way more.
@@kendi5391 wrong, scarebat should be the nemesis for batman
no but seriously youre right they both use fear as a weapon which is much more interesting than "this guy laughs a lot and this guy never does", like its kinda crazy (or i guess scary) how little effort it would take to turn scarecrow into batmans arch nemesis.
you give scarecrow a traumatic past that resembles/contrasts bruces origin story, you give him an intelligent master plan to inflict that traumatic origin onto all of gotham (to mirror batmans vow to insure the opposite) and you make their final confrontation show bruce the error of his fear mongering ways and make him change to be a beacon of hope (i kinda plagiarized "the batman" at the end there but its not my fault that movie is perfect)
@@JustKrin I mean being colorful, cheerful can be atributed to other villains but happy's bit of a stretch. Like is he really?
One of the best thing about the Rogues is that they are relatively "Low Priority". It's so refreshing to have villains who just want to rob a bank or steal a bit of tech instead of blowing up cities.
So I’m the guy who originally tweeted that opinion and I get it
But for me it feels as tho if these rogues were in Gotham they’d barely have 2 pages in Gotham if the worked individually, now whilst Batman does have mr freeze, what makes him interesting is his tragic backstory and motivations rather than his powers as before BTAS he wasn’t well known let alone well received, just look at firefly and how he’s a relative unknown and he has basically the same power set as heatwave
Personally I like it when the rogues team up but that’s the only time I really find them interesting, something you can’t say about the sinister 6 for example

I can’t agree more with #9. I am a fast reader and it is so frustrating finishing a book in 5 minutes, especially for slow paced books
I can finish a standard comic in 10 minutes. Sometimes with older and more “wordy” comic it takes me 20 or 25 minutes lol
@@lexofpower2822 It took me like 50 minutes to get through an issue of Watchmen the first time I read it, meanwhile I can read about five issues of Invincible in like 30 minutes. I can barely focus enough to finish a book in 20
1:31 Green Goblin is such a compelling Spider-Man villain because he is the antithesis of Peter, but it's so much deeper than just class differences.
I think themed episodes would be cool, like “Spider-Man Hot Takes”, “Batman Hot Takes”, “X-Men Hot Takes”
this would be so cool! it would also be a good way to get "avengers-level-threat"-tier comment section wars going LMAO (I don't know anything abt the batman or x-men fandoms but a I'm sure a spider-man themed hot takes episode would certainly catch quite a few toxic fans in the web unfortunately. But it'd be engagement on the video I guess! 😭)
Green Goblin not making sense for Spider-Man because Goblins and Spiders are unrelated is like saying Joker shouldn’t be the nemesis of Batman because clowns and bats are unrelated.
no no, you have a point here
Joker is batman's nemesis because his premis is fairly simple to introduce into a movie
Joker has no reason to still be thrown into Arkham Asylum when it's obvious he should be put into a maximum security prison
He is still criminaly insane. He legally cannot go to a prison.
Arkham definitely isn't secure enough though, obviously. But he still belongs in an asylum. (Or 6 feet underground. Jason Todd is right, just kill the Joker.)
Send him to Norway lmao.

Seriousness vs fun or Justice vs anarchy for Batman vs Joker
Silver spoon rich human vs farm boy alien for Lex vs Superman
Morality vs corruption for Daredevil vs Fisk
Like Troy said, just because Spider-man archnemesis isn't a visual counterpart, doesn't mean that they aren't rivals in their ideals
I think it would be more silly if they did, like the villain and hero happen to have related identites.

The reason why new villains don't compare to the old ones is because They haven't been Pushed into the best version of what they could be for a story
Exactly
or because people expect a character that has 1 or 2 years worth of storytelling to hit as hard as a character that has 40-60 years worth right out the gate
Hot take: Parker Industries and WebWare (which I think is the basis for the web watches in Spider-Verse) are underrated concepts and had creative value in evolving Peter's character.
You’re not wrong. I would like to see that with a Peter in his mid 40s, Married, two kids, and is still Spider-Man just with a very stable income.
At least right now, we have the new Ultimate Universe.

Hot Take!:
Peter Parker should be happy and have a happy life and be happily married to Mary Jane.

It's because he got bit by a spider. That's why he's Spider-Man
Yeah it's like you got bit by a radioactive bird but instead of getting the power of flight, you get just a peak not wings.
Hot take:
I believe Ben Grimm should have more abilties other than his hide and strength, or at least develop those abilties so he can do more, I'd even settle if he could turn into his spiky monster form willingly.

"ah, so-" 0:00

My hot take is that Frank Miller's daredevil run is the best thing he's ever written.
Wait thats a hot take?
@MILDMONSTER1234 might be i mean ppl adore The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City so
4:20 I like web shooters way more because he can ran out of web way more, when organic he runs out when he's depressed.

Even if it was just for a split second, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers Sideways
You can read it online
@Hellbat69 hey boss, I kind of explained how it's not that simple. Thanks anyways
That's just convoluted
@ meh, kinda but I still like it, allows for him to still have his intellect be shown while also giving him the one power he doesn’t but should have, I genuinely don’t get how he got every power of a spider minus the ability to make webs on his own
Maybe he can have both?? Like his organic webs are more sticky but can't hold his weight so he made his mechanical webs based on his organic ones but they can hold his weight.
@ I actually really like this idea and wouldn’t have really thought of it, thx!

Hot take: most (not all, but most) discourse around the characterization of characters in comics comes down to people conflating headcanon/fanon with genuine canon (eg. Wayne Family Adventures)
I mean i like wayne family adventures
Hot take of my own: Wayne Family Adventures is canon, it's just not the "prime" universe. Those are genuine versions of the characters and people are just as valid in enjoying those characterizations. Saying WFA doesn't count is like saying any of the other worlds in the multiverse don't count either
@ That’s super valid! I don’t think it’s inherently not-canon, but I do think to some degree the characterization can be out of character and therefore it provides a rather warped narrative on those characters and their relationships/dynamics. But, to each their own!
It’s been so long since I’ve seen you talk about Spider-Man it’s honestly refreshing
8:07 It was me, Wally. I made all the adaptations feature Barry instead of you so that *you* would have a slower time being adapted into the silver screen. Tell me, is it slow enough to me to kill Iris?

Oh 100% especially Simon. He’s been basically forgotten by DC lately. Excited to see him in that GL Corps book that they just announced

I love this format. I totally agree on the part about comics being written solely for when the trade comes out
Hot take: Green Arrow is the most deserving character to have a major dc movie (with black canary or not) because of the somewhat almost irrepairable damage to the normal public image the CW show had on Oliver Queen basically making him just another Batman.
Hear me out. Do more videos like this... You could be the comic book Fantano, and I kind of love this.
IMO, the Rogues are like the DC equivalent of the Sinister Six, just more charming
My hot take is that I’m awesome.

Scorpion is such an underutilized character. He has so much potential and it's consistently wasted.
hot take - The marriage isn't needed for good Spider-Man stories and Brand New Day through to Worldwide was much better than the internet will tell you because they're still hung up over OMD
the marriage wasn’t an obstacle to any of those stories either, the editorial staff at Marvel just likes to pretend it was because they want Spider-Man to have the status quo *they* grew up on
Hot Take: I understand why Spider-man is one of the best superheros to adapt a origin story for because i mean hes a kid just like everyone was at one point in their life.
Hot take - Wonder Woman should be the leader of the Justice League
Superman and Batman shouldn’t be founding members, but rather solo heroes who join the league later

"The Rogues would be no threat anywhere else"
There are multiple stories about the Rogues competently taking on the entire Justice League when Flash isn't there to help.
This i agree with, he only became an anti hero cause the fans 2ant3d him to be the punisher
I love this style of video! please do more of these - it feels like having a fun quick debate about comics with a friend on a lunch break

Really liked the format, would love to see more!

But overall i do respect your opinion and take a lot and think if handled properly who knows it could work
Wally is my favorite but i agree with this
@@Kalel2.0 Oh 100% It's definitely similar to how Jay is often handled, although I picture Barry being a lot more frequently involved than Jay is, Jay I'd say is retired and maybe only suits up for the occasional situation every few years or so, or assists with a situation specific to the Flash family.
1. Thawne works better at being a Barry hater
2. Wally is OP as fuck and so he'd probably no diff Thawne if he went all out
And that leads me to my biggest gripe with Wally which i mentioned in my comment, genuinely a lot of his popularity in my opinion comes from the fact that he's the faster flash
You can dislike power scaling all you want that's fine but the reality is a lot of readers engage to see feats of power from their favorite comic book character and the defining feature of the Flash is "How fast is he?" and when it comes down to Wally and Barry its always a debate about who is faster or more powerful and I always say its Barry simply because of how they explain how the speed force works and how it was created.
I think organic webbing with web shooters to convert, filter, and extract it from the arm is the best of both worlds
my hot take is that: as of right now, the skybound transformers run is the most enjoyable comic out
I’ve heard so many good things about it, but I’ve always wanted to read the IDW ones first due to how much praise they get.
Hot take: Mary jane is peter parker's best love interest
We're in doomed timeline if this is considered a hot take.
