The detail on breaking the sleeve grip was amazing. I know it wasn’t the scope of the video, but I’ve been playing with this guard for a while and I’ve never seen this. Awesome content as always Jon, thank you!
Thank you! I’ve recently discovered in the last year because of my size as a smaller stocky body type, that slx has become very natural and strong position for me. I’ve found so much success in it. Now I can add one more option to the list!!
awesome video as always. We were drilling this today in class, but just with the sweep, and when I was in X in sparring, I kept thinking, I feel there is a back take here with the underhook! but I didn't try it. I will next time :)
Very, very good. I use X guard all the time and often with success as it’s such a powerful guard, however there are some answers to common counters here which I struggle with. I will have to play with this in sparring. It’s going to take practice though as it’s a lot of switching between both legs and sweeps so will take some time to learn. Thank you as always!
@@JonThomasBJJ Definitely, I also find it tricky to switch from an overhook to underhook to get into traditional X as decent opponents won’t let you get this space to do so. I like how he emphasises to try and make your opponent believe you’re going to grab the far leg to complete the sweep, and in doing so it frees up space to switch from overhook to underhook as they move away and you can then come up for the technical stand up, or switch back to the back take if they put weight back into you. Effectively creating a trilemma for your opponent from X and Ashi. 👏🏻
OK so for the single leg x back take, you are basically getting both knees behind the person while maintaining good connection. At least that's a small unmentioned detail that I gathered. In the vid, he gets the right knee behind, then the left knee.
how does he take the back when they are on their knees? he show his favorite way to get to the single leg x but didn't show attack from that position. do you just wait till they stand back up?

Yeah I have using that a ton now it’s such a game changer!

It is absolutely incredible how all of this detailed, high quality content is available for free. Jon you are the man.
This channel is gonna explode brother, well done to both!
Very awesome details.
Great stuff, so sweet to combine different guards, attacks & set-ups!
Yeah some of these key skill sets like finishing x guard or a single leg have such a big pay off.

Yeah taking that inside foot out a and putting it on the stomach is super cool that has been really useful for me to add in.

Great video. Ty!!
Was working on this and the matrix one, as a small guy with a short legs, I still prefer the reverse dela riva system.

Thanks for sharing. btw, do you know that kanji "帥" means general in Japanese but it also means "handsome" in Chinese? lol.
Wow!!!!
What is the spelling for spider/collar set up? Humola?
It’s often Romulo Guard named after Romulo Barral
@@JonThomasBJJ thank you very much.
Isn't this just transitioning to regular X guard backwards?
