@@JonThomasBJJ I remember in 1999, I was running a martial arts club in college, and we had the first "theory and technique of BJJ" book by Royler and Renzo and we were excited to be learning out of that. One person reading the description, the other trying to copy the movements and then looking at the picture to see if we were close. Stuff like this wasn't even a dream at that point. Our state didn't even have its first blackbelt until 2006. Thanks for all you share.
White belt reporting for duty…got behind an opponent in butterfly guard with a cartwheel pass this week. Can confirm TH-cam greatly increasing my learning speed.
This channel is gold! Im for weeks into bjj now and Im so freakin addicted, Im just watchin all this videos. Wearing a Gi for the first times makes me feel so proud like wearing a uniform or smthn. Ossss
This is super helpful. I’ve been playing this guard for weeks now without really knowing most of these details and struggling against the more athletic guys getting around to my side in aggressive toreando situations, I’m gonna put these into practice this week.
Just got my blue belt and find myself exploring all the guards to play and really trying to get better at my guard retention. I really appreciate you showing in detail how the collar grip not only helps you setup other guards but also attacks. Thanks brotha 🤙
This is an incredible video. I’ve been intuitively playing with the ankle pick for a few years very effectively, as well as the transitions to dlr and collar sleeve. Excited to play with this more! 🎉
You have to be able to bring your knees to.your chest to avoid the flying arm bar but I've been doing this guard since I first saw the video and this is how I get high percentage ankle picks and haven't been arm barred once
Excellent stuff. RDLR ankle-pick threats look like something worth playing with in the future along with continuing to be annoying with collar drags and DLR sweep threats.
Great overview. I've been really enjoying your instructionals with Stephan Kesting. I've picked up some great details from your closed guard module. And thanks for answering the question about the jumping triangle in another post. That's been my Achilles heel with this guard.
Just signed up to your website !! Thank you Prof Jon for the amazing contents. I feel that your ability to teach matches closely to John Danaher ! In a world of endless possibilities, your explanation placed focuses on concepts and reasoning, which makes learning so much easier 😀
Great content. I l’d like to add, be careful of the flying armbar or flying triangle, when you feel your opponent loading up for a jump let go right away and bring elbows back to knees
Great stuff as usual! This is my go-to guard. Two issues I sometimes run into is super athletic dudes will jump to a flying arm bar when my arm is extended, or quick passers will try to grab my knees and do a fast torreando. Is this just me not being aggressive enough/controlling the position?
I meant to mention this in the video and just forgot unfortunately. If they try to jump triangle or jump arm bar I can usually feel it coming and I just bring my knee to my chest super fast and it blocks them from being able to get to it. For the Toreando I focus a lot on keeping my top leg really high or even in their bicep at times then try to go from collar drag hard when I take it off
Awesome content! One question though: do you think this position is still viable with the rise of flying armlocks and triangles coming from fighters like Hokage? Just thinking here, but nowadays I've been very watchful for these submissions during sitting guards 🤔
Well the plus to that is you get to test a lot of cool ideas on people that don’t know those systems. In my gym everyone knows those systems so it’s hard for new people to test these attacks because everyone knows defenses already
thx Jon. Awesome teaching. I tried that on Sunday and it worked well. But one question? How can i defend or prevent that people jump right into an triangle? big greetz from Germany
@@JonThomasBJJ yes sir I've seen it all and got the instructional on bjj fanatics, bro this is the guard I do and love sweeping blk blts... its my zen moment... ppl don't realize how intricately the double sleeve guard entails...
My guy Jon always talking at 1.5x speed. Efficient.
now that you mention it, I slowed it to 0.75x and sounds normal :D
like Ben Shapiro of BJJ
it's insane how much good free content you put out. I"m really jealous of everyone who is starting out right now, it's never been so easy to learn.
Yeah I know I always thing about that too, it use to be so hard to get access to high level information before.

Same boat here. I get passed easily with knee cuts and going over these details frame by frame to get better. thank you Jon!

You’re a great instructor. Really appreciate all the work you put into sharing your knowledge
Thanks really appreciate it buddy! Will keep making more content.
Tremendous content as usual. Always come away from your videos with a whole bunch of things to try out.
Thanks buddy I always appreciate the support. Thanks for commenting!
This TON of information was presented so quick and concise, it felt like the scene from the matrix where he "downloads" Kung Fu. "I know Jiu Jitsu."
Hahaha that’s the affect I’m going for. I’m gonna start adding chapters in soon too so it’s easier for people to review content later.

Thanks so much buddy! Yeah that closed guard system was really fun making. Hope you enjoy it and you are using it in class or competition soon!
Very useful details! It helps to have this big-picture view of all the possibilities from this position.
Hi Jon! your website is looking great! loving how you are categorizing the systems, I have just devoured the double sleeve course! so good,
Illuminating as always, thanks Jon!
No problem happy to help!
You used to have a pay a bunch of money and travel across the state to get this type of information, now it's getting served up for free.

Yes! I instantly thought of John Danaher when watching this video. Also, another great analytic Professor is Andris Brunovskis (the Omoplata maestro)
This is my favorite guard, thanks as always!
Love this ! I’ll definitely checkout your website
Jon, I really enjoyed your articulation on these ideas. Great video, thank you!

All your vids are great and have really helped improve my game. Thank u
Good concepts. Love collar drags.
Yeah they are such a powerful tool in the game.
So thankful for this superb content 👼
Terrific instruction. Thanks Jon
5:56 I got ankle lock a lot when my feet is in this area, one guy in my gym just quickly trap the foot under the armpit and fall on his back
one of my favorite guards, nice details tnx
I’ve always liked this guard. I worked well for me in so many ways. Very powerful and affective.
Yeah it’s such a useful one especially when you really need to make something happen fast
Really great info

for sure if my opponent just goes for the collar while sitting i will try to jump over to a armlock, even caught black and brown belts with that
SO MUCH QUALITY!!

@JonThomasBJJ would you recommend this guard if you are a small guy going against bigger opponents?
Nice! Great content as always!
Thanks so much happy you like the videos
Thanks!
Jon help!! I want to play this guard but I get flying armbarred when I do.
To prevent flying armbar are you just focusing on keeping/managing distance? Cheers

How do you attain this with a fresh opponent who's gi is tightly tucked? I find it difficult to get without getting caught up in their grips...
Hi thanks. Nice “speedy “ video. Just pls saying“ please “ to the person with you is more polite than just ordering him to do what you need. 👍
I would really like to train with Jon Thomas.
Come visit Gothenburg we would love to have you train with us.

Any tips on how to protect yourself from jumping arm bar attacks while playing collar guard? Much appreciated!
nvm just say your reply to another similar post!
Great video!what is your favorite guard game Jon?
Hey buddy it changes a lot as my game evolves, recently it has been collar sleeve again enjoying all the transitions from there.
@@JonThomasBJJ i will try that collar sleve to see where it will bring me :)
Isn't there a danger of hyper extending the guy's knee when pushing against his knee when pulling him down?
Superb
Fun drinking game. Watch a Jon Thomas instructional and take a shot every time you hear 'building from there'.
I like your gi bro
Can you address the flying armbar threat? For sure the one thing I'm most worried about when I'm playing this grip.
I actually discuss it in another comment, I forgot to discuss it during the video.
Hey brother you hv any more ideas for the double sleeves gwaurd... 😉

flying armlocks and chokes are most welcome here

Are his pants short or what??

Broad casting , at scientific method ,right pitch ,right frequency, the scientific method ,got that?
